I wish all science fiction was written this well.
I can't believe I've never heard Matthews before.I was absolutely hooked after the first, I listened to the entire set on audible in one week.
Word play combined with some crazy well crafted diction make the characters in this series shine. Point of view flies between almost every character your ever introduced to, you get to see conversations played through every participant. Trust me you'll get to a point where you can't wait to hear whats going on in the heads of the main characters.
The publish summary doesn't really let you know what you can expect. This series deals with torture, enslavement, genocide, and corruption on a galactic scale. There is a lot of scenes that may turn people off to the series. I guess steer clear if you've got a weak stomach for graphic detail.
Downside is the most recent in the series isn't on audible yet, and considering it's been 7 years since it came out I'm not sure you'll ever get a real conclusion to the series.
Great story read by a great voice
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    Yes
What was one of the most memorable moments of An Exchange of Hostages?
The explanation of how the governor works.
Have you listened to any of Stefan Rudnickis other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    Very enjoyable story.
    Any additional comments?
Matthews is a brilliant writer; I knew the story from reading the book some years ago but it was a treat to hear this reading.
    couldn't finish
Zepe stars. It's that bad. I have to write at least 15 words for this review to publish. It's really bad
Very well written... but garbage sci-fi
This story was exceedingly well written for a novel that has no business in the sci-fi genre. There is little to no science in it beside possibly that of the science of torture. I like my protagonists good or grey but darker motivations are alright as long as the character is honest about it. Its actually really aggrivating to hear the main character justify is unforgivable acts.
Simply one of the worst books in a while
What disappointed you about An Exchange of Hostages?
Took forever to get anything accomplished. Gave up after wasting 4 hours of my life I will never get back again!

A look into what's to come.
In this we meet Dee, the main character for The Calm Act series. This is a prequel to the series and gives us a glimpse of what's to come. Dee has been forbidden by her employer to attend any of the rallys happening. Interested to see exactly what is happening, she attends one anyway.
This was a quick look into what's to come. It gives us a taster of the world and characters in the Calm Act series and is intriguing enough to make me want to read book 1 and see what happens next. It's a quick and easy read!
The author narrates this and I will say that she is clear and easy to listen to, but she didn't really perform this, she just reads it. Her tones are very similar for each character and was often hard to follow who was talking.
I was given this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This in no way affected nor influenced my thoughts.
    This was Excellently done
Though this I'd a fictional story it is actually a Story of just about where we are and where we are headed. I hope others read or listen to this book because People this his is a Real possibility.

    Gute Geschichte

Nothing here is what it seems!
When I read the description for The Wolves of London, I thought it sounded like a good urban fantasy. It was that, but it was so much more!
Alex Locke is a mild-mannered fellow with a couple of ex-girlfriends and a couple of daughters. Each day is much like the others for this single dad, as he gets his youngest ready for school and arranges child care with the neighbors before he commutes to his job as a teacher. Nobody knows about his criminal past--until the day his oldest daughter reveals that she's in a jam. Alex is forced to call in a favor. And that's when the real trouble begins.
A lot of urban fantasy focuses on underground supernatural factions as they battle for control over territory or lives, and often there's some romance thrown in as well. That's what I was expecting, and The Wolves of London seemed to be going in that direction--but then it took a left turn. And then another, and another, until I had zero idea where this story was going next. It was a fresh new take on the genre, and wholly unpredictable!
I definitely appreciated Morris's imagination, but even better are the great characters in this book. So here's a warning--this is only Book One, and there's definitely more to the story. I just finished listening, and already I miss Alex as well as the other people from this realistic world that's also a very unrealistic world (in a good way!). Describing them would spoil too much--let's just say that everybody you'll meet here is full of surprises!
No review for this audiobook is complete without a mention of Ben Onwukwe, the narrator. His voice is just gorgeous, but his range of accents and voices is plain incredible. His reading creates characterization that adds both depth and humor to the weird, weird world of the story.
So if you're looking for something a little different in the urban fantasy line, I highly recommend The Wolves of London. But hold on to your headphones--you're in for a crazy ride.
    Solid Surreal Horror/Mystery
Creative tale and first installment the 'Wolves' story world of the dark-fantastic.

If you could sum up Holding Their Own VII in three words, what would they be?
This book takes you all the way back to the beginning when Bishop and Teri started out. Surviving alone. There is one short adventure after another. Enjoyed the adventure.
Great book awesome series horrible performance
As a fan of the series, a love of authors style, and this book didn't disappoint. After the 2nd book with this narrator, helped because continuity. But the bad sound effects and ruins the mood.
I'll keep moving through in hopes the next book changes.
    This is an AUDIO review.
As with the others in the series, I have enjoyed the story. But the audio narration leaves much to be desired. First the narrator changes from book to book. Some narrations try to include sound effects which hurts the story because of the poor attempt. Multiple books use two narrators that in my own opinion are far too old to be doing the story. The first book, as I wrote in my review made it sound like The story was taking place at a seniors center. It's hard to believe that Terry could be having a child when she sounds like she's in her 50s or 60s. Two of the books so far have tried to insert sound effects, these attempts fell short.
Great story and series. Poor narration.
Great story. Poor narration, makes all the males sound like perpetual drunks. Cheese sound effects.

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Fifty people go to sleep in their own beds and wake up in a compound in the middle of the jungle. Men and women from all walks of life with only one thing in common - none of them know where they are or how they got there. Alex is a paratrooper. Yael is a mathematician. Max is a law professor. They can't leave - a lethal barrier surrounds the facility, but no one knows if it's there to keep them in, or to keep something out.
The compound is comfortable and provides for all of their needs. There's a warehouse with DNA coded locks. Only Barbara, the doctor, can open a fully stocked operating room, and only Alex can get into an arms room with enough weapons to outfit an infantry platoon. There is enough food and other supplies to last for decades, but nothing to tell them who did this to them or why.
For Alex, it's an intriguing mystery - anything is better than digging foxholes in the desert - but he and the others don't realize that time is running out. On the other side of the barrier lies a horror beyond imagination, and the barrier is about to come down.

Action packed thriller that challenges ones moral
Michael Edelson gives new meaning to never put off until tomorrow what you can do today. Alex, a soldier, goes to sleep and wakes the next morning to discover himself in a paradise of beaches and no missions. He, along with 49 others wake up stranded on an island with a life-threatening force field and individual assignments a governor, a soldier, a cook, a doctor, a biochemist and more. Enough folks to start their own little world with little to go on. All their needs are met on the island, there is no reason to venture forth is there?
Alex is not one to take things at face value so, with a few trusted and trained residents, he sets forth to discover what happened and how widespread it is he should have stayed on the beach!
Michael Edelson captures the imagination of his listeners by presenting them with a doomsday event that reveals horrors and actions of those in power that will leave your head spinning. This is scarier than most books because it COULD happen; it MIGHT happen, and we as humans are doomed if it does.
Action packed thriller that challenges ones morals and belief of right vs wrong. This book will make you think, then challenge your beliefs and make you think again. Conspiracy theorists will love it but if you enjoy adventure, action and the unknown settle back and listen. This is an awesome book!
Michael Edelson does an excellent job of capturing his audience and squeezing every emotion known to humankind. Rob Zaleski, the narrator, became the book and characters. His delivery and talent were phenomenal. I thought Zaleski performed expertly and would love to hear other performances by him.
If you love action, stories that make you think, and emotional roller coasters this is the book!

    Members Reviews:
These are great action pieces in a well constructed universe as humanity ...
This book is composed of three novelettes: Steelâs First Temper, A Hotter Forge and What Price Humanity?*. Having not read all of the authors Plague Wars series and none of the Plague Wars: Stellar Conquest series I'm not certain which series these stories fit into. But I don't really think that matters. All of the stories fit into the Space Opera sub genre. Although the stories mention the Eden Plague, it is not necessary to have read the plague war books before reading these staoreis.
The first two stories center on a new Space Marine lieutenant Joseph âBullâ ben Tauros. and a somewhat mysterious character, Jill âReaperâ Repeth . These are great action pieces in a well constructed universe as humanity battles an ongoing war with aliens called Memes. There is great interplay as Bull goes on his first official mission and Reaper guides him to understand her experience as he learns to lead.
These two stories want me to read more about this pair of warriors but also, I want to read more about who Reaper is, her history and development .
The last is a Vincent âVangoâ Markis story. This is set further in the future than the previous stories. Based on information from A Hotter Forge, I thought I knew where this story was going. VanDyke had me fooled. Not quite as action packed as the prior stories, it was still a good and fast read. Now I want stories on Vango and how he became the person he is in What Price Humanity?.
All of these stories also drive home the the cost of battle without going on a diatribe, Great action and fast paced reads. I rate them 4.5 out of 5.
    Humanity, humanity, humanity
This collection of three stories from the Stellar Conquest series might be a good place to start for readers new to VanDyke's Plague Wars/Stellar Conquest series (of which there are 15 or so in total).
The third story in the collection is particularly good, and could be a candidate for the Hugo award. Whether you've read the Stellar Conquest books or not, this story is an interesting exploration of humanity, in a vein similar toEnder's Game (The Ender Quintet).
What's great about these stories is to see some more interaction and adventures with Jill Repeth and Bull.

    Not Interesting At the Start
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Probably not. I like this genre, but this book focused too much detail regarding the dead feeding on people. Sort of unnecessary, we get it - they eat people. The killing of characters in the group we follow, are done without much point or plot device added.
Which character as performed by Daniel May was your favorite?
Daniel May does a good job, but no one character stands out.
Did Mitigation inspire you to do anything?
    Re-consider not finishing this series.
A well crafted a addition to the series.
As expected Sean Schubert delivers another gripping gorefest of zombie goodness in this 3rd installment of the "Alaskan Undead series" I am looking forward to reading "Resolution".
    Yay, The Downfall of Maggie
This series was supposed to be a trilogy, but the story was so good I see why it was extended. Along the way,we meet some new friends and lose some new friends and old friends, and also see the demise of some of the villains. The author writes in such a way that he makes the reader actually start to care about what happens to the main characters. He gives enough graphic description to whet our appetites without making us lose it. This was another great installment and I can not wait to find out what happens in the next book. This is an author that I will keep a look out for in the future, as well.
    Rambling, killing off characters
I thought the start was kinda cool, you find out what happens to the Dr. Cadwell and another person.
But then there is what I found to be prolonged rambling with not much happening and then suddenly characters start dying. I didn't want those characters to die, but at the same time nothing much was happening with them. I didn't see much of a point of the entire book besides killing off characters which really wasn't done in any profound way.
I found the story very annoying and unsatisfying and I don't like the kid centric focus, because I don't like kids. They are annoying short people.
