    Should have been unabridged.
What would have made Alien 3 better?
Making this audiobook an unabridged installment. As it is, it's no better than watching the film. So much of the story, that make novels such a joy, is made better by knowing all the extra details. It's a shame.
Which character as performed by Lance Henriksen was your favorite?
Honestly, every one of them, I'm a huge fan of Mr. Henriksen.
What character would you cut from Alien 3?
Nothing, too much was cut already.
    Any additional comments?
Make all the Alien novels into unabridged audiobooks!
    Not Bad For A Human...
Alan Dean Foster's attempt to rough out the edges of ALIEN 3's script makes for an interesting juxtaposition between the movie and the film. Even with the special edition of the film available, this one is worth a spin for hardcore ALIEN nuts, especially given Lance Henriksen's reading (which is excellent).
The audiobook was much better than the film.
If you could sum up Alien 3 in three words, what would they be?
    Underappreciated, well-written, excellent
What did you like best about this story?
I enjoyed the setting and the conflict established. By placing the protagonoist (Ripley) on a new world, surrounded by prisioners (all male), and with no weapons it created an interesting delima in dealing with the Alien akin to the first film. The survivors are then forced to work together and use their surroundings to take on the Alien.
What about Lance Henriksens performance did you like?
This is one of my favorite audio books because of Mr. Henriksen's performance. It was nice to have an Alien alum perform the book in the first place, but I felt he did a good job. Some of his different character's voices are poorly done, but was able to forgive it because of the overall performance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
There wasn't a particularly "moving" part of a survival-horror/sci-fi tale.
    Any additional comments?
I first listened to this audiobook on a two cassette tape set that I had for years. I have always like the story of Alien 3 and feel that the "original cut" of the film didn't do it justice. The novilization filled in a lot of holes and created a more complete story. As a fan of the franchise I would say this is my second favorite Alien story behind the second film. I would recommend a listen to anyone who may not have really enjoyed the film but would like a better "telling" of the story.
    Aliens 3 but better!
Just like the movie ,but you get to listen to lance Hendrickson read it to you. Plus the book is always better than the movie. 2strokes rule!
    a real high in low!
I really hate to give any sort of negative review but this audio book is so awful I almost feel its my duty. I think what really makes book bad is the narration. Frequently the narration can really make or break a story it this book may not be as awful as I think it is just because of Lance Henriksen's naration. There isn't anything really wrong with Mr. Henriksen's narration, its just that he should have not been hired for this vocal.

After the Great War in 2077, her island Republic emerged from a ruined world. Its citizens were safe - but never free. They lived in complete isolation from the outside. Until one man rescued a girl from the sea, and shook the very foundations on which the Republic was built. It was a time where ancient philosophical questions had collided dramatically with the march of technology, and where just what it means to be human was up for debate.
Anax is sure she has the answers. But she is about to discover that for all her learning, what she's been taught is not the whole story....

    OUTSTANDING!!
What made the experience of listening to Genesis the most enjoyable?
The narration was, in my opinion, spot on! a wonderful performance! Very clever use of science fiction to explore sophsticated philosophical concepts. Had me smiling as every new twist was cleverly revealed. Really enjoyable.
What other book might you compare Genesis to and why?
I loved this as much as Brave New World and the philosophical themes, in a way, hark back to Huxley or Orwell (although I hesitate to put many Authors in that league).
Although, it could just as similarly be likeded to Planet of the Apes!
In any case Beckett has really intruiged me with his notion of what life really is, or isn't.
Both intriguing and tedious, with a big finish!
The story of Anax and her examination started off promising and the tension was palpable. The plot was interesting if not thrilling, but I found myself losing interest during the second hour. During the third hour, when one would think the plot would develop and heighten one's interest, I almost gave up after enduring dreary, if earnest, philosophical ranting delivered in a monotonous drone; I did, in fact, skip over some sections. The stunning ending was what saved me from feeling that I had wasted my time and caused me to reflect that perhaps there was a good reason for the ranting!
    Right Up There
A great book for fans of artificial intelligence and near future worlds. Well written, and also an excellent narration
    Shortish but memorable
Slow burning, intelligent, chilling. Echoes of 1984. I did not guess the ending. Highly recommended.
Not your usual post apocolpse dystopian fiction
What did you like best about this story?
Well written and beautifully delivered. A story told, and a society built without understanding where it was going. Then the twist 15 mins before the end. Totally unexpected. And then the twists continued. Haunting.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
When Adam realises what's going on and what will happen, and then when Anax relises what's going on and what will happen.

    Great, Great Stuff
This was a really good book. It was better than the first in the series. However, it is necesary to read the first book before embarking on this book. The characters Mr. Steele has created for Coyote were really well developed, and I cried when certain characters died. So sad. I was happy when others died. Also the war was well played. Listen to the book; I don't want to ruin it, but I will highly recommend it. This is probably the best space frontier/military sci-fi out on Audible with the exception of the Prince Roger series by John Ringo. I reccomend that series also.
Also it seems to me the only political ideology that Mr. Steele expouses in the second novel is a constitutional Democracy, and the only may to run one is by using libertarian principles. I.E there is no free lunch.
Great sequel, though a very different book
Where Coyote was a book about man's initial thrust to colonize another planet, Rising is more of a political history of the problems that arise in a new colony. Not quite as hard sci-fi filled with the unknown as the first, but still an engaging read.
My biggest gripe is that Steele writes in circles. It's as if your're on a boat trying to cross a river but often you get caught in a whirlpool and spin around and around. Eventually you paddle out and progress several feet but then get caught in another whirlpool. Steele constantly rehashes plot points so that "you remember why X=Y" and it's quite overbearing. Feels like filler more often than not. He also has a habit of introducing compelling characters that he seemingly forgets to get back to later in the book.
Our slow-reading-robotic narrator Peter Ganim seems to have picked up the pace a little this time around.... but he's still the most painful point of this audiobook.
Good story ruined by bad narration
Good story, good sequel to Coyote, spoiled by dull, dull, dull, slow, monotone narration. Find a different recording, or read the book instead.
At least be sure to listen to the sample before you purchase and download!
    Just as Good
This, the second part, is just as good as the first. Another book I listened to straight through and have now added the 3rd to my Wish List.
    Solid story
What did you love best about Coyote Rising?
    Alternate universe approach
What did you like best about this story?
The book although a part of a series can stand alone. I dislike reading a series as it is just a scam to pad weak story lines, draw out the drama and take my money

    Good Fun
Let me start with what this is not.
It is not Orson Scott Card, deep and emotional.
It is also not Asimov, overwhelming you with technical details. This is a good story about characters you come to like very quickly, and it never lets you get bored or distracted. It is light and engaging, and the hero is what he should be, a little smarter than everybody else. (a bit like James Bond) I could do without the narrators overused and distinct "said Cole",.. "said Foreyes",.. "said Cole",.. "said Fujiama",.. But this does disappear as the story continues.
I bought the second book before I had finished the first, because the characters are fun to travel with.
    Well worth the credits.
    A tired cliche
The author gives us an explanation as to why he wrote the series to begin our tale. He says he is interested in writing the story of a leader.
He fails. The main character is not a leader. He is a subverter. It just so happens that he is smarter and more "intuitive" than all his superiors. His superiors are so ridgidly unbelieveable it strains the imagination (of the reader!).This stereotyped story of untinking space marines and a stupid face saving military hierarchy was simply absurd. The main character stands out because he is a "thinker" while everyone else are lazy ignorant louts. Unbelievable! It as if the author's intended audience was 6th grade boys and he was writing in the media frenzy at the end of the Vietnam War.
I will not be listening to the rest of the series and I love a good series.
Move along, nothing to see here
I've almost made it through this whole series by now, I don't really know how I have endured it this far. I guess I just like to finish what I start. And let me tell you, ill be relieved when Jonathan Davis pulls me through the last minute of this audiobook.
Long winded speeches about Wilson Coles genius, cliches and repetitions of said reasons why Wilson is the only one person in the universe with two brain cells to rub together, it just gets tiresome.
Get a David Weber or Lois McMaster Bujold book instead. Pass this one up now, before it's too late.
You can't keep a good man down
    Semi space opera/military.
The lead character is a Wilson Cole, an officer in the Navy of the Republic.

    Short Story Collection
I have ready most of Orson Card's books and am a huge fan. This book is very captivating and is great with character development as well as awesome narration. The only down side is that it is a collection of short stories centered around a main theme and I found myself wishing a few of the stories were longer. This is no Ender's Game...but if you like Card then this is a must read!
    classic card
Classic Card. This is another set of short stories taking place in a possible future US. I can see how this would be more enjoyable to someone who is familiar with the LDS (Mormon) culture, but I don't think is is prerequisite. I found it entertaining, funny, and thought provoking as I do most of Cards works. I enjoyed the afterword almost as much as the stories themselves. Keep them coming.
    An indoctrination.
I expected enjoyable post-apocalyptic sci-fi but got an indoctrination into the theology and world view of the Latter-day Saints. After a plague has decimated the population of North America, "Christian soldiers" (non-LDS) run amok, killing LDS men, women, and children. I guess initiates may enjoy it, but I didn't make it past the first section.
    Not my favorite
I loved the Ender series and was buying everything Orson wrote. However, there are now several books, and this is one, that unless you are a Mormon you will find infantile. Avoid.
    Curious subject
There was a time before the end of the Cold War when post-nuclear holocaust books were everywhere. How humanity and civilization moved on after the bomb was a big subject in fantasy writing. Muties and bands of pirate robbers and cannibals abounded through fiction. This book took that subject matter, which was once so popular, and twisted it to fit the point of view of the persecuted Mormon people. In the beginning of the book the Baptists of Greensboro massacred the Mormons of Greensboro and survivors were forced to move to Utah were law and order still presided. Interesting enough. It would be awfully offensive subject matter if you were a Baptists or an "Evangelical Christian". I wonder if the Greensboro Baptist did anything to the Greensboro Catholics or the Greensboro Jehovah's Witnesses. There are Christian Sects that exists that the Baptist find more offensive than the Mormons. Mr. Card didn't mention any of these. I do think that if there were six bombs dropped and civilization crumbled soon after there would be a lot more racial tension in the Southeast U.S. than the author believed to be the case. It's funny to me that the author thinks the Mormons would be persecuted 20 years ago, but just two years ago the Republicans almost had a Mormon candidate for President.

Reader in a bit of a hurry
I would have enjoyed this book if I had read it in print form, but I just couldn't get past the reader. Her enunciation was clear and her natural voice was great, but at many points her lack of phrasing served to drain the dramatic tension from the scenes. There was no concept of a pause when it was needed, and as mentioned previously, the male voices were just hard to listen to. The listening experience would have been fine or even good had she just spoken the male parts in her natural voice, and slowed down the reading pace where appropriate. I will continue to enjoy this author but likely will choose those books read by others. I'd be willing to try this reader again if she's revised her technique or reads a book who's narritive style is better suited for her.
Not sure what the otheres are thinking
I very much enjoyed this book, I can't understaqnd why most of the other reviews are so critical. This book like most of Catherine Asaro books are complex. She develops the Characters and no not every book has to be full of blood and guts to be interesting. I think this book like almost all of her books may not be as easy of a read as some but it is worth the investment. Excellent Job Catherine.
    Military not.
Catherine Asaro writes fantastic science. She obviously puts much thought into her story plots and expends exactly the right amount of effort developing the character population in each book. The only problem that keeps her from being a great story teller is that Asaro writes about military behavior with the experience level of a lifetime civilian; which doesn't work very well.
An example of this can be seen In "The Last Hawk," where she has a high ranking military officer disregarding even the most basic sworn oaths of office that every service member (officer and enlisted) must take. She even has him committing treason by swearing loyalty to the enemy in exchange for privileges and favored treatment. That blatant disregard for military behavior seriously flaws what would otherwise be an excellent book in an outstanding series.
Now, having said that, I must add this. If your only exposure to proper military behavior is what you see on TV or in the Movies, then you will more than likely have no problems with anything Asaro writes in that department. I'm critical of her treatment in that area because I spent the majority of my adult life in a military uniform and I expect authors to be, at least, slightly familiar with the subject when they use it in their stories. Unfortunately, very few of them are.
I enjoyed reading this book, and the series, because the science was so well thought out.

    Another Good Asaro Book
Enjoyed this one also. Decided to get the rest of the series in paperback. Now that I'm hooked on the Skolian story I just can't wait for Audible to trickle the books out.
Anna Fields' male voices weren't as bad as usual, but I wish she would not use the nasal teenage-boy voice for the main characters. Makes it difficult to take what they say seriously.
Kelric sleeps his way across the universe!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
at 1.5 speed on my iPod, yes. Although sometimes I only half listened as it moved slowly in parts. Or he jumps in bed again.
Would you be willing to try another book from Catherine Asaro? Why or why not?
I've read a bunch of her Skolian Empire series. They are entertaining, but Catherine Asaro is no Lois McMaster Bujold, which is a constant disappointment. (Seriously, if you like sci fi and haven't read LMB, you MUST!)
    Which scene was your favorite?
No spoilers, but there's a real tear jerker scene near the end of the book that made the rest of the book worthwhile. I actually did shed a few tears, and don't do that often! It says something about Anna Fields' performance as well.
    Any additional comments?
Kelric seems to be a sex addict compared to his siblings and relatives followed in the other books of the Skolian Empire series. In both The Last Hawk and this book, Kelric sleeps with most of the women he comes into contact with. It gets a bit tiresome after a while. Is she writing a romance/sex novel or sci fi? Kelric seems like a bit of a dullard compared to his dynamic sister Sauscany. But ah well, still entertaining and worth the read. Somewhat necessary for understanding the context of books further along in the series.
I found it awfully convenient that when Kelric is sold into slavery as a Providor, that his situation doesn't turn out too badly for reasons I won't spoil here. But... awfully convenient. A lot of awfully convenient things happen in this book.
    Great!
Wow! Audible gets more Asaro books! While I'm not a huge fan of narrator (Anna Fields), this is a novel chock full of space opera goodness!

    Cheers with a Wormhole
This book is pure fantasy -- but a good fanatsy. There's a bar where everyone not only knows your name, but really cares about what goes on in your life, and has interesting (to put it mildly) life's of their own. I'm not a big fan of puns, and of all of the Callahan books this one has the fewest pans -- so I found that pleasant. But the most important part of the Callahan stories are the characters. These characters are not particularly realistic, but as you listen to their stories, you wish they were. If you had a really tight cadre of friends in college, and if your college experience was sufficiently long ago that you now remember the experience through a rose colored set of bifocals you'll relate to the story and hope that Mr. Robinson continues to produce more of them.
    A Must for Callahan Fans
Simply said, this is another great book in the series. Easy to listen to, funny and touching. I hope it's not the end.
    Callahan's Con (Unabridged)
Always a kick to hang out with the Callahan bunch and have some fun while saving the world!
    The Worst of the Best
The problem with this book isn't that it's bad. It's not. But compared with the other books in the Callahan's series, it's pretty weak. None of the stories where shared pain is lessened, nor of shared joy, increased.
    That being said....
If you've read the previous ones, read this one. If you haven't.... go back and read "The Callahan Chronicals". If you liked that... go through the others and get here eventually.
    An unexpected but wonderful farewell.
I laughed. I cried. I cringed. I gasped. I laughed again. I'll miss this group of telepathic companions till I decide to listen or read again.

Vietnam veteran, former lawyer, former bus driver, and now best-selling author, David Drake tells a military story like no other. His readers recognize that he can take them where no one else can, with gut-wrenching description that puts them face-to-face with the enemy, and in the midst of the action right on the battlefield. He helped create the audience for mercenary military science fiction with his best-selling Hammer's Slammers books. Drake graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Iowa, majoring in history (with honors) and Latin. His stint at Duke University Law School was interrupted for two years by the U.S. Army, where he served as an enlisted interrogator with the 11th Armored Cavalry in Vietnam and Cambodia. Drake has a wife, a son, and various pets.
    Critic Reviews:
"[Drake] has developed a following for his Slammers just short of cult proportions." (Rave Reviews)

    Great performance by the narrator
This book was a four out of five stars for me; enjoyable but not necessarily my favorite of the Hammer's Slammers series. However, the narrator did a fantastic job and really made the story come alive.
Slammers what more do you have to say.
yet another great addition to the Hammer Slammer series. I'm reminded that at the first book I read when I was a child and that's been a while. still the series brings me back to that childhood and the reason why I love Hammer's Slammers.

    Publisher's Summary:
John Daulton's Hostiles brings the opening trilogy of the bestselling The Galactic Mage series to its pulse-pounding denouement. With the apparent betrayal by Blue Fire sending the forces of Earth and the forces of Prosperion whirling into chaos, what's to become of Altin and Orli's love, much less their lives? And worse, failed diplomacy now risks the lives of billions more as war rages across the galaxy, the very heavens bloated by the hate of so many races bent on revenge and dominance.
Hostiles picks up the story where Rift in the Races left off, leaving Altin and Orli struggling to survive the fallout of failed interplanetary politics. Somehow, they must endure the intergalactic menace of planet-sized magic, a vengeful space fleet, and the untimely rise of a jealous orc army bent on righting the wrongs of humanity's Prosperion past. And not only must they endure it, they must, if possible, make it right.

    I hate cliffhangers
it was great until the ending when that stupid twist and then cliffhanger just happened out of nowhere and now I have to go through the next book to find out what happens next.
