CRAP ON CRUST

ON DEAD END AMPUTATION APPEARED TO BE THE NEW BLACK

The beginning set this world up to be really spooky. The government agents our hero has to deal with when arriving our very funny. It is a jungle forest planet with some of the deadliest animals and insects in the universe. The biggest and badest animal happens to be sentient, but the humans don't realize it. ON DEAD END HUMANS DIDN'T MAKE ROADKILL, THEY WERE ROADKILL. A pretty good set up.

This feeling did not hold. Soon, the book goes into talking about guns. Another taking them apart and talking about how tough they are. As more characters are introduced they are two dimensional. If you are playing the arcade game the bad guys are running around with the bubble over there head saying bad guy. Giving a voice to the huge monsters almost saved the book for me. Still, it just was lacking something to get it over the booze line. It is not a awful book, just not a great book.

I must admit I didnt think I would think highly of this book but it turned out to be a very good one.

I was highly entertained with the story and the human aspects. I hope there will be a second book.

There was just enough comedy and Sci-Fi to make me want more.

Excellent first contact story

Like the other reviews stated, I was very pleasantly surprised! The story was great, the narration was excellent, I ready liked the narrator's voices. Most of the story takes place on dead end, a world where humans are pretty much at the bottom of the food chain when unarmed. The story line is one where a few humans are searching for the secret ability of the top predator on the planet, who happens to be the top predator of the known galaxy. Overall, a very good audio book.

Jurassic Park & Enders Game meets Romancing the Stone.

Better then expected story. The story develops very quickly and has several unexpected twists.

What happened to Book 2?

It's bad enough to end Book 1 in a cliffhanger. What makes it particularly galling is that Book 2 is not even available. Are you suggesting we buy the print version if we want to continue the story?

I feel cheated

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I have loved Alan Dean Foster's books for many years. In fact, his Flinx and Pip series took over 30 years to finish but every book had an ending. The Human Blend was very interesting and a good read for as much as there was. However, there were no completions of anything. The book had one main thread (to those of you who have read this, sorry about the thread reference) and that thread did not go anywhere. The author could have published all three books as one and still been a reasonable length, but that would not have generated as much income as three separate but incomplete books. If you want to read this series, and I suggest you do, wait until all three are available on audio and then get them. There is no indication when that will be.By the way, I feel that David Colacci did an exceptional job of reading this book.

Awful Ending

I love Foster's books. I get the impression sometimes he's off reading about topics that are future science based and he using those topics for his books. Usually it works really well since he weaves together a great story.

*Spoiler Alert*

Not so this time. The Human Blend seems to focus solely on a slow buildup about what it means to be human as humanity's technology 200 years into the future with the advent of meld technology.

The main characters uncover a mystery and attempt to solve it while bad guys chase them. That's essentially the whole book.

But the ending is pointless, nothing else gets resolved. No mystery is answered, we never know anything about what happens to the main characters, or even really who the bad guys are truly. It's like Foster gave up somewhere or had to turn in an unfinished book to meet a deadline with the publisher. Where is the real ending???

Foster, I love your books but please finish this book.

Too long for a story that goes nowhere . . .

The characters could be interesting, but they have no depth, nothing to make them resonate. Even though this is the first book in a series, I expected something of importance to happen.

Orion - he is the the focus of the book. We get to know his inner-being with a clarity rarely known in other novels.

Which character as performed by Stefan Rudnicki was your favorite?

He does a pretty good Helen of Troy. All of his performances of female characters are credible and not off-putting.

It's a fun time as each historical event is resolved in a more realistic way.

The Sten Series is Science Fiction At Its Best

If you could sum up The Wolf Worlds in three words, what would they be?

Cinematic action with a heart and soul.

The Second Time Around It Should be an X as in TEN

I got to go play in 68/69 Funny thing is I came in in Second place also.

I think the guys with the big glasses and funny nose rigged the game when he was dancing on the tables in Paris or is that GAY PAREE!

The book I bought within days of it coming out as I did with all of the Sten Books. The old guy at the book store ordered them for me as soon as he knew they were coming out. He knew that I really liked Chris as I had met him just once and was really suprised he knew of me and a little gig I did in SEA where a bunch of us went North to Play and then ran like heck to get out of town.k

Just as so much of what Sten had to do while he took care of the empire and sometimes the Emperor. TA DUMP that is a small drum roll if you please!

I would still give my left one to have a knife that his in my arm like stens did. that is Way cool. It could probably be done in this day and age. Just finding a doctor to cut you to be able to do that part would be hard to find. The knife I can get a ceramic knife that will do the job but it is not indestructible. It is also not just one or even two or three Molecules wide dang me dang me they aught to take a rope and hang me.

I have bought this very book three times now. at least now a theif or a fire can not take it away from me.

Ugh.. The ACCENTS

Okay, this probably isn't entirely fair, as I've read this book in physical format probably 5+ times, but the voice acting was incredibly distracting... Warning, spoilers ahead...

Okay, so a couple of things caught me here:

1. The Eternal Emperor is NOT AUSTRALIAN. If you've read the series all the way through you know that he is originally from Hawaii, so the Australian accent seemed crazy off to me.

5-star enjoyment in space opera pulp-fiction.

Dietz has become my go-to pulp-fiction, space opera choice. The unread volume of his works will last me some years. I've followed his 'Legion of the Damned' mega story and don't really know what installment this one is but it must be #4 or #5. I do know that on completion of this installment, I started the next one the same day.

Dietz uses linear time quite cleverly to bring continuity between installments. This installment has a curious and savage familiarity. Dietz offers the insight at the end. The story line is influenced by the Boxer Rebellion of the 1900's albeit it in a galaxy far, far away and with alien races and factions rather than the Boxers, the Dowager Empress and foreign diplomats.

Dietz does a superlative job in this book's fluid narrative through topics of interesting minutia to war college level strategy and tactics. This is the best installment so far.

Umm, they are all the same

Umm, they are all the same storylines and the same themes. The main characters seem stale and the same. No major character development. The first in the series was very readable but the rest are just more of the same thing, over and over again.

Missed this when it was published and glad I finally discovered it.

I am not sure just how I missed this book when it was first published - but I did. It is Dietz at his best with the humor, character development, etc. that we have come to expect from him. If you are a military Sci Fi fan in general or a Dietz fan in particular (and missed this book earlier like I did) then reading this is worth your time to read and enjoy.

Absolutely love the entire series.

Pretty much the best military science fiction series I've ever read. Very well written, well researched and thoroughly enjoyable. Incredibly hard to put down.

Galactic military manoeuvres

Continues to build on earlier work, but can be read on its own. Competent space/military/galactic empires sci fi. Some of the military hardware seems a bit antiquated for time scale, but generally convincing and a good liste.

If you read the others you will probably want to read this one also but not at the top of your list.

Decent but not to the level of the first 2 parts

While it is a good book and I did enjoy it, there is some lacking. Its a little drawn out in parts and not nearly enough battles, its much more political than the previous 2 parts. A good read still and necessary to understand subsequent parts.

One Fast Ride!

This book is action packed from start to finish. The editor review calls the book "24" on mars, but while I enjoy the show 24 I just don't see how the comparison fits. This is "starwars" meets "robotech" meets "band of brothers", if that makes any sense. The story follows multiple characters through a roughly 24 hour period, centering on a war taking place on and in orbit of Mars. The action is just one big adrenaline rush from start to finish. From a spy being inserted behind enemy lines, the ground tank commanders trying to reclaim the cities of mars, the pilots fighting in orbit and mars atmosphere, and a retired marine trying to save his family, the story drops you in and you just need to hold on. This is one of those books where you plan to listen for an hour and next thing you know you've read half the book. Highlite for me was that the when a explanation was needed of some sci-fi technology, you never felt like the action was put on pause, but rather the explanation are cleverly inserted into the action. Another highlite was the use of the robotech/gundam "starfighter/robot" idea was used, and used well. Each phase of the starfighters "fighter, eagle, and bot modes" were clearly used and the author explains exactly why each pilot is using their machines in that way. I would compare the writing style to the Prince Roger Series "We Few" by John Ringo & David Weber. I would also say this book could hold its own against other sci-fi books like Starks War, Old Man's War, Legacy of Aldentaa. I urge those who enjoy this book tho request audible to carry the follow on books (The Tau Ceti Agenda & One Good Soldier) in the trilogy.

Disclaimer: I love this narrator and would listen to pretty much anything he reads. You'll love him too if you prefer narrators who take themselves a bit less seriously and focus instead on making it fun for you to listen to them. Having said that, I thought that the book was well-conceived, full of fast-paced action and laden with humour. The story is satisfyingly unpredictable. Will be buying the next book in this series.

Actions speak louder than Vison Statements

It's really cool how all sides have such lofty priniciple and never want anything bad to happen. Makes the reader judge based on actual events.

absorbing, excellent narration

I really enjoyed this outing from 1991, and appreciate the effort the creators took to bringing it to audiobook format. The future predictions from the actual date of the book - 1991 - are amazingly spot on, and as with other RCW books, a lot of time is (well) spent on character development. The different times and places - at least those which we've already lived through - feel quite real.

I think pitch shifting technology may have been used - to subtle, good effect, to enhance the male narrator's rendition of the female voices. Also, the accent for one of the male characters, who hails from a small town in Washington State, is so spot on it's scary.

For those who enjoy time travel themed sci-fi, you're in for a treat.

Good Character Study

As with his book SPIN, this is not so much a SciFi than a good study of human nature. The SciFi element are just intended to let the reader observe consequences of various cultural perspectives.

More like an elevator

In the beginning the elevator is up. We have a rogue military cyborg attacking the time traveler. Then the elevator goes down and we are deep into the depressing life of a man whose wife has left him for another man. Back up for the discovery of a mysterious tunnel under the house and where does it lead? Back down for the romance that is not quite a romance. Up for the nano machines and the rebuilding of a human. We go up for one floor as we start a war and hold steady for a long fight scene, ending down for tying up depressing loose ends.

My point here is that the story goes up and down and when it is up, it is very good and when it is down, it is very depressing. RCW, like usual goes for some character development, which he does well, the question is do we really care about his characters? In other books I have, but in this one the main character is just a love sick whinny baby. There is more Sci-Fi in this book then some of his other books and it is pretty cool.

Wilson borrows a little from Simak's Way Station and a lot from Michael Kube-McDowell's Alternites, both good books. I just wonder if time travel has been overdone.

If you have not read Wilson before, you want to start with Spin or Mysterium.

Jonathan Davis, the narrator has a slow melancholy voice which would best be suited for reading obituaries.

What made the experience of listening to A Bridge of Years the most enjoyable?

I believe in any audible book that the narrator can make or break a book.
