History book on Chicago

I learned more about Chicago than I wanted to know . There where a few "zombie battles" but in the end I regretted buying the book.

Falls short of what I expect from Scott Kenemore

My first Scott Kenemore audiobook was Zombie Ohio and I was instantly hooked! The storyline had me, the performance was superb, so imagine my delight when I discovered there was a series! Unfortunately, this book falls flat.

The performance was mediocre, with absurd attempts at accents. The only one consistently carried through was the Pastor Mac, which happened to be the one I found the most obnoxious. The attempts at Spanish/Hispanic accents were laughable, often sounding almost like Middle Easterners.

The storyline was more about the trio traipsing around Chicago than zombies. In all honesty, they could have been running from mobsters, rampant teenagers or rapid dogs for all it mattered, their interaction with zombies was so infinitesimal.

My first experience with Scott Kenemore's zombie books was so great, I won't let this drop in the bucket keep me from listening to his others.

Snoozer

I bought it based on the recommendations, which were great. But for my taste there was too much talk and not enough action.

Smart, enjoyable book

Really enjoyed the writing, full of clever, well conceived detail. Big story is far-fetched and allegorical, but hey, that's what the zombie genre is all about: An external, 'impersonal' threat that reveals the good and bad in our society. At first I was put off by the narrator, but quickly got used to his read. Loved the pastor, enjoyed the punk, and the nerd was solid, if overshadowed. Author did a good job writing in different voices...and that gets an 'AMEN'.

Light zombie entertainment with a twist

The novel's main themes, zombies and Chicago politics, blend surprisingly effortlessly, and to amusing effect.

sappy but ok

at first the massive attention-to-detail kind of threw me off and had me daydreaming, and it was a slow start but about halfway into it it gets going and then it gets pretty good. It's a little sappy for my taste being a guy but it's your girls would like it.

Really good run under the sea.

Steven Gould tells us a story that moves right along. The characters are developed well and the reader (listener) grow to like them. The ending was not all that easy to predict. This story will keep you interested all the way through it and makes the miles go by fast.

I recommend it.

If you thought immigration was bad before...

Living in Houston, it's surreal to listen to a possible future for our Bayou City to unfold in this way. Steven makes it feel like you're there living the story.

Not what I expected

After listening to a previous book about jumping to an earlier time I was looking forward to this. However the submarine parts are long-winded, there are far too many Shakespeare quotes and there are many talks in Spanish? Which are not interpreted so you have to guess at the meanings.

Good story and very enjoyable

I did enjoy the story, while not Steven Gould's best book it is still a very entertaining book and worth the listen. While the performance is very good, being from the South Texas coast the reader mispronounced several area names. "Copano" and "Palacios" specifically. This drove me a little crazy.

The Book

I will call it the Chronicle of Rachel

Mary Hope is an old woman living on the farm on the Coast of Oregon. She lives in an uneasy relationship with a religious community that she allowed to move onto the property, under the condition that she be allowed to teach the children. One woman fears her influence, and finds her teachings to be sacrilegious and believes Mary to be a witch. Fearing her time is growing shorter, Mary takes on an apprentice, a young boy, who she shares the story of her survival of the nuclear war that ravaged the earth. She tells the story of Rachel Morrow, a strong woman who believed her purpose in life was to protect the record of the past, by preserving and protecting books. Yet, as the conflict within the community grows, Mary begins to fear that Rachels legacy, and the minds of the future are in serious jeopardy.

A Gift Upon the Shore is an achingly beautiful, emotional ride through a nuclear Apocalypse. Wren creates an almost dark beauty as she describes the blight that is done to the earth. From scorched landscapes to nuclear winter, Wrens vision is horrific in its reality, yet stunningly beautiful in its detail. Wren writes with a lavish, almost poetic style, yet manages to keep the story quite accessible. There is no conflict between style and substance in the novel, the both blend together in a sort of dance that manages to delight the mind while telling a good story. The novel twists between Marys present and her past, slowly building in tension and scope. There is an ominous mood that grows throughout the novel, a feeling that something horrible is coming, some devastating moment that will alter everything. Yet, when that moment does come, it is unexpected, and tragic.

This was my third experience with A Gift Upon the Shore and the first in audio form. I always expect to be disappointed when I reread a novel. I expect that some of the beauty will have washed off, or the excitement lessened in the retelling. Yet, Im not sure if its because of it being an audiobook, or just that I am older, but I left this experience loving the novel even more. There were moments that I was simply devastated by the actions of characters, even though I knew it was coming. There is one moment in this novel that truly just broke my heart again. Its such a moment of weakness, an inexcusable moment of inaction, that I raged against it, hoping that this time, it might be different. I think, there can be no greater praise for a novel than this. That it affects you in such a way that the emotional impact grows with each experience.

Writing this review is actually quite hard for me. My initial reaction is that I want to grab everybody by the throat and shake them until the promise me they will read this. I want people to experience this with me. This novel is one of my all time favorite reads.

where are the last 5 chapters?

Lasting impressions? This book was over too soon! After a lengthy intro into a fascinating world of urban survival reflected in the high plains hunker-down mode that it bred after years of conflict, the book just ends abruptly. The theme of a single man representing a civilizations ideals is very well placed and explored, as is the backlash from said single man's actions to bring these ideals back to the people of post bio-plague America. Unfortunately the last 100 pages or so of the book seems to be missing. Riding off into the sunset saying 'all's well that end's' is just not enough for me.

A few interesting ideas, but riddled with problems

There are many problems with Algis Budrys' "Some Will Not Die" but first and foremost is that the author doesn't seem to be at all sure what it is he wants to write. At some times, Budrys is writing a sort of "future history", at others a political thriller, and still others a rather mundane post-apocalyptic thriller. While the last of these is the primary genre in which one would place the book, the lack of focus results in a thoroughly disjointed novel.

It begins conventionally enough (following a prologue set some years later) with a super-plague, possibly developed by one of the competing parties of the Cold War, tearing through the U.S. and presumably, the rest of the world. The reader follows the path of Matt Garvin, a young survivor who strives to make a life for himself in an emptied on Manhattan. As the book progresses, the reader is offered glimpses of various stages of Matt and his family's life, alternating with the plot line from the prologue. Unfortunately, this approach in a fairly short novel leads to a pronounced lack of character development and plot twists that seem almost random. Moreover, there is only the vaguest connection between the prologue and the main body of the text, which makes for jarring transitions.

To his credit, Budrys does introduce some interesting theories regarding the development of civilization and the allocation of labor, but they are rarely well integrated into the plot, and therefore come across more like lecturing than story telling. Finally, the conclusions of both sections are so overwrought as to be almost laughable.

Ultimately, this isn't a terrible book, but it's not a very good one either. The character development is weak, and breaks off just when it is getting interesting. In addition, there is no unifying theme to the work, and finally, the book is riddled with typos. If you are a big fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, it may be worth reading if for no other reason than its premise is largely believable, which is rare in a genre riddled with absurdity. If you are indifferent to post-apocalyptic fiction, I would pass on "Some Will Not Die" as it doesn't have anything to offer when removed from the context of the genre.

If this is a children's book they won't understand it, and if it is an adult book they will find it childish and very disappointing. A real struggle to get through due to the wandreing storytelling. Never used the rewind so many times to understand the plot line...

Interesting but flawed

This is a series of short stories told in the manner of Aesop's fables or robot fairy tales. The theme running through the stories is of a maker and his robot creations. The stories are varied - one is a creation story based on two robots competing to create thinking machines, while another tells the tale of robot castaway and his hatred for his logical companion.

The stories are entertaining and worthy of extra thought after the tale is finished, however, after reading reviews I expected an additional dimension in the quality of writing. I read about amazing puns and beautiful poetry carrying through the translation to other languages. This I found to be missing in this translation, so, given my time again, I would read a different version.

What made the experience of listening to Stormfront the most enjoyable?

I liked the universe which was presented, and the characters were precisely defined, despite the shortness of the " book"

Who was your favorite character and why?

Most of all I liked the captain, because I think he is the closest to the human of present( not augmented ) at least I think so.

Have you listened to any of Robert M. Clarks other performances before? How does this one compare?

The narration was excellent at least during this short story.

After the book ended , I thought there was some mistake and I ddin't get the full file, but unfortunately that was not the case.

It sounded like a prologur to a very interesting book, I wish the author would write The Full Novel or perhaps even the series. I will wait.

A multi-timeline war against the Shadow continues. Good Job!

The Shadow, an unknown entity?, race?, is attacking and destroying our world on various timelines. Eric Dane and Foreman are trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to stop it from destroying theirs. The ozone is taken from our world opening the Earth to direct Solar radiation., giving maybe 2 years for all to perish, Dane, along with Amelia Gerhart from another timeline, try to save their Earth by ...well you read it. A few glitches in the science of ozone and the Earth's atmosphere, but didn't detract from the story.

A great Atlantis tale

Assault on Atlantis. This novel follows the formula that the author has succeeded in making a success. The premise is that there are many universes which is called a multiverse. In one of these -verses is an evil Shadow that has been trying to destroy the Earth for tens of thousands of years. As we did out the shadow is really stealing all of the parallel Earths power and resources such as ozone water and nuclear energy. Along with this evil thing are Gates such as the Bermuda Triangle, the Devil's Sea Gate and the Angkor Wat Gate. In addition the people who are trying to unravel the mystery of the Shadow and its long term intention are people who travel through the gates and the attendant portals from universe to universe.

Very well crafted, with many twists and turns!

Taking off on the heels of Diamond Star, Catherine Asaro creates another beautiful gem of a story in The Saga of the Skolian Empire, which ramps up the stakes for the both star-spanning empires of Skolia and the Eubians. Separate, converging plot threads focus on people from all walks of life on both sides of the two interstellar superpowers, enduring the fallout from Del-Kurj's music, and having to overcome nigh impossible odds born of ages of enmity to achieve true, lasting peace. This coda to the "present" story arc of the Skolian Empire series gives twists and turns in the lives of both royal families brought about by hidden treachery, as well as the effects wrought by these decisions upon those among the trillions they respectively rule. For veteran fans of the series, this will be another satisfying and engaging read. Absolutely recommended.
