A different way of thinking

I love this book, and the series as a whole. Castro's mind works differently. Somehow, he creates worlds that feel cohesive and logical and characters with depth that feel true to the worlds they inhabit, yet makes everything feel both magical and relatable. It's hard not to fall in love with bitter, fragile, resilient Andrea Cort.

Bold and Original

This is a bold and original creation by Castro that contains some really exciting elements. I'll try not to give away too much, but it focuses on a murder investigation at a space station in the distant future. There is an almost all-powerful artificial intelligence that runs the place, along with an experimental species living in trees, a couple of creatures that have joined their minds and become 2 living, separate halves of the same being, a corps of public servants staffed by burnt-out cynics... On the negative side, the main character is very unpleasant and also tells the story, so the reader gets to spend a lot of time with her.

No More Nigel!

This is the third novel in Gregory Benford's Galactic Center series. In book two, we left Nigel as he was rushing towards Galactic Center. We left Warren in an underwater haven built by the Skimmers, as the Swarmers continued with their dirty work of destroying life on earth. We were given a glimpse of the mechs and an understanding of their agenda. Now in Great Sky River, we see what has become of mankind in a far distant future. This is the world that was described in Benford's novella, A Hunger for the Infinite, the reason I started listening to this series in the first place.

Humans live in tribal families and lead nomadic lives on the planet Snowglade. We understand that the humans once lived in beautiful citadels and were somewhat tolerated by the mech population, until something changed and citadels were destroyed and the humans viciously hunted. The planet's climate has been changed by the mechs, from the lush and green world implied by the name Snowglade, to a dry and harsh environment suited to mechs and dangerous to humans. The Bishop family is constantly on the run, looting mech factories for food and parts. All humans have robotic enhancements and implants to help them survive. "Aspects" are the memories and personalities of fallen comrades, which can be stored in chip form and inserted into the back of the neck. Family Bishop values their Aspects and relies on the knowledge and experiences of their ancestors to stay alive.

Killeen Bishop is the new hero and faces off against the Mantis, the extremely creepy mech that harvests humans and creates artistic monstrosities for enjoyment. We see a small glimpse of Nigel, knowing that he must have passed this way on his journey to Galactic Center. Killeen finds the initials N.W. on a beautiful structure built by humans.

This story is thrilling and intense, and completely different from the two previous books. We learn what has become of humanity after mechs take over the universe. This is what I was waiting for when I started the series and I'm so glad I hung in there!

This one's a keeper. Despite Silverberg's reputation as a great SF author, this book isn't a genre work. It's has a lyrical feel, maybe like a memoir with telepathy as a kind of stand-in for the creative process. The performance was wonderful with lots of colour, but never overbearing. Best book I read or listened to all year.

LITERARY TWADDLE

THE OLD ACADEMIC BULLSHIT

This book reads like a diary and each day could start with the words, Oh Woe Is Me. The main character can read minds and this leads to all sorts of problems. For most of his life he knows no one else who can do this and he can not tell anyone else. As a small child, he reads the minds of his parents as they have sex, argue, lie to each other, etc. I had high hopes for this and thought it was going to make an interesting story. The story meandered and sometimes into meaningless side stories. David makes money by doing term papers for college students. In chapter 4 he does a paper on THE NOVELS OF KAFKA, and we get the entire paper in this book. Chapter 14 is THE "ELECTRA" THEME IN AESCHYLUS, SOPHOCLES, AND EURIPIDES and once again we get to read the entire paper.

Evidently there is no upside to reading minds and then when you lose the power that has haunted you all your life, there is no upside to that either. As they say were I live, this guy would bitch if they hung him with a new rope.

TIME FOR MIND MOVIES

An Undistinguished Man with Telepathic Abilities

Dying inside is written in a subjective style from the point of view of its protagonist, David Selig, a man who is losing his telepathic abilites, and he is struggling to compensate for the lose. The novel is every bit as much a literary masterpiece as it is classic science fiction. The novel actually trancends the science fiction genre, practically anyone could enjoy this book.

This book was very thoughtful, and did a good job of detailing the inner workings of the protagonist's mind. I was blown away.

Great Narrator and Decent Book

I have enjoyed this and several other titles by Kim Knox. Her hallmark of the big tease and original paranormal settings mesh really well with the romance at the heart of the story. This is a novella - not too short and of a good enough length to get into the characters. Very graphic but very enjoyable.

Interesting story with a good narrator

I can't for the life of me figure out what previous reviewers were looking for in this book. So, because the book is so short, I listened to the book again, and still didn't get it. It is almost as if they wanted to read/hear a longer book, though it was clear that its only three hours long. For me this book was well written, and well read, with lots of action and character development. Obviously the character development is on the thin side, but knowing that the story is so short you expect that, right. I mean you won't be able to fully flesh out a character in 94 pages, so why judge so harshly. I found the book engaging and engrossing, and I think that that is because I wasn't expecting the author to write the next Lord of the Rings.

Bitter... Yes I Am

Would you try another book from Kim Knox and/or Shannon Gunn?

I will definitely buy another book narrated by Shannon Gunn - this is already my second, but will not be purchasing another story written by Ms. Knox.

What could Kim Knox have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The premise of the book had much potential, but fell flat on many levels. As it is, the book is more of a novella. Not a lot of time to get a message across and what time there was, is wasted.

There was a lot of reiteration on the same issues - was Rider infected?, who was he?, if Annabel is infected I'll kill him, etc.. I found myself wanting to FF just to get to a point. What I found after listening to over 2/3 of the story is that there wasn't much of one. The book was really too short for that. I was looking forward to a steamy listen, but all I got was all talk - very little action. A bit more detail could have been given to flesh out an explanation on the infection that the characters were trying to avoid and the backgroung on the main characters. The physical interaction between Rider & Sutton was also sorely lacking. The constant banter - and there was a lot of it, wore on me very quickly. Very repetative

If the author did a re-write, I'd read it.

Enjoyable, fun, entertaining set of stories

Fun and highly listenable anthology stories on time travel and nicely narrated by different readers. I love speculation about time travel and such and hence enjoyed these multiple takes on time travel. I listened to these stories with my wife since they make for good entertainment and none of the stories were too long. The stories sometimes seemed to end abruptly and it would take my wife to explain to me what just happened since I usually read mostly non-fiction science type stories and need non-reality to be explained to me. Enjoy and be prepared to re-listen to the last 30 seconds of some stories or have your spouse explain them to you!

BTW, the stories seemed to have gotten progressively better as you listen, and I would recommend listening to the end since the last 3 or so stories were the best stories.

Positively awful collection of stories

This is really the worst collection of time travel (or for that matter science fiction!) stories I've ever read or listened to. Droning, pointless, and uninteresting - what could be worse.

Hard to compare it considering how it is constructed, but I loved it.

The first book in the series, he is consistent and does a GREAT job.

EXCELLENT!

I truly enjoyed this book; its so well written that I really dont know whats going to happen next. The battle action & violence does pick up as the Thulians and other foes push their own agendas. Plus it catches up on old friends & foes, as well as introduces new characters.

Now I'm hooked

Where does World Divided rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It is probably in my top 25 ever, but I'm doing about 3 -5 books right now and it is my go to at the moment. I bought the 1st book in the series on a whim, but needed to find this book as soon as I was finished with the 1st.

All action no story

Enjoyed the 1st book. This the 2nd book was just a series of poor excuses for poorly done and repetitive action scenes. Frankly it's lost it's way, big time.

A change for Alastair Reynolds: This was his attempt to write a more positive future for the human race. The small events of this small narrative of characters will have a dramatic effect on the human race. A very personal story, an exciting race through the solar system and a great introduction to space opera for someone only casually familiar with sci-fi.

Again, unlike most Reynolds this is about humans at the top of our game. Yet still divided. A great read. I understand that the sequel takes place after many changes brought about by the characters in this book. Reynolds left me wanting to read more, and I anticipate the sequel. A great first book in a series, but also a solid stand alone book in it's own right.

good luck waiting for book 2

This book will assist you in realizing how epic you are as a human being. Just imagine of all the inert matter in this solar system alone, in the galaxy, and in the universe... you as a human being are not comprised of inert matter. You are conscious and self aware of what you are doing. The universe is your mollusk.

Just when you get into the groove of how the world in this book works, you find out how meaningless it all is. Everything is is very local. That feeling of how important you are as a human being can be shaken down to make you feel how very small and insignificant we all are.

There are elephants, lunar dwarf elephants, neural clones, evolving robots, space flight, a human stomping the face off a robot, bombs, and self repairing glasses in restaurants that heal them selves after being dropped on the floor.

Now good luck waiting for book 2.

Fun but uninspiring

The book is a pleasant book. The characters were nice, the world building was great, but the narrative lacked wonder. I reach toward sci-fi to experience wonder.

Solid narration and an interesting expansion of

Suzie Costello's character but not really a Torchwood book. That is to say Torchwood is offstage in most of the work. An interesting listen for long time fans and any fans of the character. Additionally the narration is quite good and I would enjoy finding more works read by Indira Varma I just felt as though it were trying quite hard to be a TW book but not quite making it.

What made the experience of listening to Torchwood: Long Time Dead the most enjoyable?

This one is set primarily between Children of Earth and Miracle Day. But offers a glimpes of the old Torchwood team. This is the first Torchwood title I've listened to that wasn't one or two hours long. Those are fun but quick. It's nice to have a more In depth story to listen to.

What did you like best about this story?

The return of Suzie Costello. Anyone who knows the show should remember the troubled Torchwood member that this story centers on. This one resurrects her (again) and goes deeper into her psyche then ever before. This book also continues story lines introduced in the show that I had wanted to see resolved.

What does Indira Varma bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Indira played Suzie in the show. She is the best choice to narrate this book. She understands who Suzie is and brings out her soul.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes and at about 6 hours I could. But I had to listen in two sittings. Maybe next time I'll do it in one.

Any additional comments?

I miss The presence of Gwen. It looked like she might come in at one point. But perhaps there would have been to much contridiction with where shes suposed to be.
