    Publisher's Summary:
The story of Captain D. Michael Abrashoff and his command of U.S.S. Benfold has become legendary inside and outside the Navy. Now Abrashoff offers this fascinating tale of top-down change for anyone trying to navigate today's uncertain business seas.
When Captain Abrashoff took over as commander of U.S.S. Benfold, a ship armed with every cutting-edge system available, it was like a business that had all the latest technology but only some of the productivity. Knowing that responsibility for improving performance rested with him, he realized he had to improve his own leadership skills before he could improve his ship. Within months he created a crew of confident and inspired problem-solvers eager to take the initiative and take responsibility for their actions. The slogan on board became "It's your ship" and Benfold was soon recognized far and wide as a model of naval efficiency.
How did Abrashoff do it? Against the backdrop of today's United States Navy, Benfold was a key player in our Persian Gulf fleet, Abrashoff shares his secrets of successful management including:
From achieving amazing cost savings to winning the highest gunnery score in the Pacific Fleet, Captain Abrashoff's extraordinary campaign sent shock waves through the U.S. Navy. It can help you change the course of your ship, no matter where your business battles are fought.

    All Ahead Full
In IT'S YOUR SHIP: Management Techniques from the Best Damn Ship in the Navy By Captain D. Michael Abrashoff, the author goes to prove once again why the United States Military (Navy, Army, Marines, Air Force, and Coast Guard) constantly and consistently produces individuals who continue to make this nation the greatest in the world.
Capt. Abrashoff shows how he took a ship full of "we've always done it that way" sailors and turned them into "there has to be a new way of doing it" go-getters. His story, could be told by countless of Ship Captains, Company Commanders, Air Wing Commanders, and anyone that has the authority to make changes happen in the military. Additionally, the story Captain Abrashoff tells is that of men hungry for change. If they weren't then this book would have been titled, "I Tried And The Ship Sank."
This book should not only be required reading at ALL the military academies but at every Business School in the nation (both Undergraduate and Graduate schools). It states clearly that eventhough the MISSION comes first, the people that make the mission a success should at all cost be taken care of. Failing to do so will ensure the failure of the mission.
Listen to this audio book and then pass it on to someone who you think will benefit from the insight, also share it with a veteran and soon you will hear their story of how they got the mission accomplished and the resources and initiative that went into meeting their unique goals. Great Primer to initiating change in your place of business.
    Book good! Production lacking.
Whomever was in charge of the production of this audio book needs to stop. The (insert expletive here) music between sections and/or chapters is extremely "cheesy" and annoying, and it greatly detracts from the reading by Capt. Abrashoff.

  • Think Big, Act Small Audiobook by Jason Jennings

    Title: Think Big, Act Small
Subtitle: How America's Best Performing Companies Keep the Start-up Spirit Alive
    Author: Jason Jennings
    Narrator: Jason Jennings
    Format: Abridged
Length: 3 hrs and 44 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-20-05
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 108 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Jason Jennings and his research team screened more than 100,000 American companies to find nine that rarely end up on magazine covers, yet have increased revenues and profits by 10 percent or more for 10 consecutive years. Then they interviewed the leaders, workers, and customers of these quiet superstars to find the secrets of their astoundingly consistent and profitable growth.
Jennings discovered that consistent high performance takes more than locker-room speeches to the sales team. What these companies have in common is a culture based on a shockingly simple precept: think big, but act small. It works for retailers like PETCO and Cabela's, manufacturers like Medline Industries, service companies like Sonic Drive-In, private educational companies like Strayer, and industrial giants like Koch Enterprises.
In Think Big, Act Small, Jennings reveals the unique power of combining the strengths of a big organization with the hunger of a start-up. Any company, no matter what its size or industry, can benefit from following these examples.
    Critic Reviews:
"The latest insightful and inspirational title from Jennings again demonstrates potential profitability in contrary concepts." (Publishers Weekly)

    Cultures Succeed Again and Again
I liked how the author built each story as to integrate to what the title states.
Fun to listen to as I felt part of the story in my current work. It gave more confidence to what I was doing and what I do in business.
A positive outlook from the doom and gloom the media sheds on business today as pontificating oppressors of the human spirit.
If you are down on your business or work read this quick book and keep it handy for reference.
    Mandatory Listening for Business
Tells the story of the underlying principles of consistently profitable and successful companies through their stories. One of the few books I would say are mandatory reading for any business manager or leader.
    Good information
This book was interesting to consider while working for a large company going through great growth. The concept of thinking small is novel.
    Interesting book, good narrator
Stories were good. Simple things you can implement in most businesses. A good listen, would recommend.
    Worthwhile Read
What did you love best about Think Big, Act Small?
The stories about these small companies and how they managed to have great success despite having times where they were on the brink of collapse.
Have you listened to any of Jason Jenningss other performances before? How does this one compare?
    N/A
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I listened to it in pieces during various commutes. I think I enjoyed breaking it into parts so I could think about the lessons learned and really try to absorb more of the critical advice.

"Harvard professor Adrian Slywotzky...brings a holistic approach to the making of money." (AudioFile)

    Read his other books
    The Good -
The main concepts of the book are sound and time proven, and it has some interesting and novel ideas. Moreover, the book has good recommendations of must read works.
    The Bad -
What was meant to be an entertaining fictional side plot, in the fashion of The Goal or The Max Strategy, doesn't work. It ends up being both corny and archaic. Basically, the main character of the book is a 20 something trying to save the large conglomerate which employs him. Give me a break. The vast majority of my peers including myself (in that age group) could care less about the slow and large, uncaring bureaucracies we work for. If anything we're dreaming up of escape plans to start our own businesses. Throughout the book I just kept wondering whether Steve was a complete moron or whether the story took place in my parents' time.
A related flaw is how the book's concepts are delivered. Hearing the mentor character, Zhiao, ?give lessons? is akin to listening to Bill Cosby's or Grandpa Simpson's random rambling for hours. It's very difficult to differentiate the useless/nonsensical crap from the great/important pieces of data, Zhiao keeps jumping from here and there. Sadly I could go on and on about how horrible the plot and side dialogue are... ex "What kind of fish do you think you are? I am a light fish." - enough said.
    Conclusion
Unless you have spare money or time ? read Slywotsky's other books to get to the meat of his ideas. This is largely a waste of time.
    2 thumbs up
Excellent Read. And worth listening to over (and over). I wonder if Slywotzky gets a cut of the incremental revenue on the additional books he recommends? Oh, he wrote a couple of them himself...
Worth while all the more since it looks like he definitely practices what he preaches.

    Publisher's Summary:
Do you work for an emotionally intelligent organization? In his phenomenal best seller Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman, Ph.D. mapped the territory where emotional intelligence meets I.Q. - where we apply what we know to how we live. His benchmark work validated what many successful people already knew: Being smart isn't just a matter of mastering facts; it's a matter of mastering your own emotions and understanding the emotions of the people around you. Now, in Working with Emotional Intelligence, Dr. Goleman shows why emotional intelligence has become the new yardstick of success for CEOs and junior hires alike. Drawing on both unparalleled access to business leaders and cutting-edge research, he shows that star performance in every field depends more on emotional intelligence than on I.Q. or technical skills. You'll be surprised to learn how the impact of emotional intelligence is even greater at the top of the leadership pyramid and will benefit from the real-life examples from the business world that Goleman uses to illustrate his theory.

    Interesting content, boring narration
It is a shame that so interesting and important content be narrated in a so boring way. The editor should had convinced the author to leave the narration in a better "mouth". For an audiobook the narration quality is very important so this audiobook does not deserve more than two stars.

    A Very Misleading Title
Should have been titled: "Leadership Lessons From the Bible". This was not well associated with the concept of 21 minutes in a day.

From interesting to oh, so boring
If you're corporate suit looking for new ideas for the boardroom, download this one. I'm sure you'll love it. If you're a lover of Jung and all things philosophical/metaphysical, don't bother. God, I so don't care about the implementation of global strategies for Shell oil company . . .
First half was great, second was a snooze fest
I felt that the book started strong and held my interest, however, halfway through I found myself nodding off. I was expecting a more engaging story and more lessons to be learned than there were. Disappointing, but this book was required reading for a class that I am taking.
    Ugggh!
He read his diary to us. No real substance that teaches any lessons that one can apply to their own life.
    Book fell short.
Started very strong but turned into gibberish. This was basically an autobiography but never really told how you could achieve this self actualized level.
    Request and promise fulfilled

We need to slow down to go fast, step back to energize, take a breath to connect with presence, and look at the same situations with fresh, innovative thinking.
