DISC too restrictive for modern life

This book is written so you don't have to read/listen to the entire thing, just listen to what is relevant to you as a leader at the moment. It is an older method from the mid twenty-first century.

The problem is this. I took the assessment and listened to my sections. I found that they could not place me neatly on the continuum of the DISC circle. The first part of the description was correct, while the last part was completely off. I recommend "Now Discover Your Strengths" instead which allows for a greater spectrum of human tendencies.

Great book

Very few books provide insight on decisions made by every follower aspiring to be a great leader. This book was great and would rank it in the top ten books i have read on leadership.

A Follower, Not A Sheep

Would you listen to The Courageous Follower again? Why?

Yes. I've read it previously in fact. This book isn't a "self-help" book so much as it is a philosophy book & I think there's benefit from repeat exposure.

What did you like best about this story?

The book does a good job of putting followership into context. From an early age we're taught that we should always be leaders; being a follower is equated with weakness. But, as Chaleff explains, an individual may have several leadership roles, but also some follower roles, and vice-versa. We wear a lot of different hats in life. Sometimes we're leaders, other times followers. And that's a good thing.

Which scene was your favorite?

I liked the notion of being a responsible follower. It illustrates the delicate balance between faithfully executing the aims of leadership in a responsible way and in being a slavish devotee--when to try to change an organization from the inside and when to be a whistle-blower.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

A Follower, Not A Sheep. I also think the book's subtitle "Standing Up To And For Our Leaders" would make a good tag-line.

I had to read and listen to retain because the story lacked a plot and just described situations. But lots of great information and advise for present and future leaders. Great book!

Narrator makes this a difficult listen.

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

The content of this book is fine. However, the narrator has an annoying verbal tick. Before many of the words, she makes a slight "emm" sound. It is as though the once had a stutter and has learned the technique of pre-starting words with this noise. It makes for a very choppy understanding as you cannot listen smoothly.

What could Carol Kinsey Goman have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The sections on the question and answers with business people from around the world are VERY tedious to listen too. I sense that it would be much better if I could have visualized these sections on a page. Listening to them was tedious.

Would you be willing to try another one of Vanessa Harts performances?

No. Defintely not. She had the tempo of the reading wrong and an annoying verbal tick. Sometimes, it took my brain a couple of seconds to realize what word she had been saying. For example, if she was saying "Japan" it would be "a Japan" which wouldn't then make sense in the grammatical construction of the sentence. It was so hard to figure out what she was saying that I couldn't process the actual content as the narration went along.

I couldn't deal with the narrator. Her manner of speaking sounds like she's trying to be an aristocrat. It's supremely annoying and takes away from the content.

I felt like the book was well written and well performperformed. It covered a lot of interesting information and added some great insight from a leadership perspective. Even if you have read other body language books, I still recommend this one.

Great Learnings; Try Before you Buy

The book itself is good, and in my learning process with respect to executive coaching I found the content valuable. Just be warned - There are a fair number of diagrams as she explains systems however and it's more effective to look at these on a page that it is listen to someone describe them.

One should listen for a bit to the narrators voice before purchasing. It is very distinct (deep/gravelly) and not for everyone; if this bothers you, you may be better off purchasing and reading the book.

I couldnt get past the voice

I have no idea about the content. I couldnt listen to the narrator. It sounded like a computer- or-g an-is-a-tion -read by an automated text to speech. I will look at the reviews about the content and I might buy the book. I wasted my money.

Would not purchase again

I was looking forward to listening to this book but by the end of the first hour I couldn't count the number of times that the author used the phrase deep change. It felt like he couldn't articulate what the goal was without using the words deep change and in some ways sounded like he was talking around in circles.

The narrator was not engaging and it could almost put me to sleep. I would not recommend this book.

Awesome Book!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Great book, originally I regretted getting the audio book instead of hardcover so I could easily reference back, but they supply a pdf. Book is not just for after you start a new job or assignment, but covers many aspects of the Before you start from Interviewing (wish I had it before I interviewed), acceptance/fuzzy front end (most beneficial) and afterwards. I've already recommended it to several professional colleagues and all agree it's great.

Great business ideas for an FA

This is the first book I've bought through audible and I absolutely loved it. I listened to it in my car, at work during my breaks, and at home while relaxing. Supernova Advisor was filled with a lot of great information that can eliminate wasted time servicing clients who are not ideal for my business and focusing on clients I really like and who like me. It's a great example of quality over quantity.

Good book, slightly dated

Most of the illustrations and talk of technology firmly date this book to pre-2008, post 2001 mentalities and approaches to the business. The 100 client cap is getting more outdated, through more practices hiring paraplanners. Also, the book is very focused on one specific firm.

Regardless, there were some great nuggets in this book. But, it could use an update, or perhaps an additional section for folks outside of the Merrill world.

Like many business books, 20 minutes of content repeated a number of times

This audiobook falls in to the trap of taking a great idea, and padding needlessly to build pages. A 30 minute version would be of equal value, as the concept is sound.

I am only just over halfway done but wanted to publish the review in case anyone else wanted to get it. You should. I have not read a large number of books on this topic but I think it's was great. As a women leader you can't read enough the experience older women have and pass on. Most importantly it's current and relevant.

A collection of the stories of women leaders

I tried to like it, but its just a collection of the stories about some women leaders. Yes, there are always something inspiring about those leaders, but that can be well just be due to their personalities. The monotone of the reader is not engaging. Its hard to tell one interview from the other. The voice is also not very pleasant.

I need the abridged version

I listen to a lot of leadership and management books and so was looking forward to this based on the strong reviews. However, as one who reads in order to use the insights and practices in my work, I need books that get to the point a little faster. In addition, I listen while on my bike commute, so if things are dragging, I find myself thinking about other things.

This book was just too slow and as I am about 5 hours in, I think I will pass this back and maybe read it when I am retired.

Culture Eats Strategy for Breakfast!

Edgar Schein is the leading theorist on organizational culture and process consultation, and this book is the standard bearer for understanding organizational culture and how to change it. The book is divided into five parts: defining organizational culture and leadership, discussing dimensions of organizational culture, outlining the leadership role in building and developing culture, outlining how leaders can manage culture change, and discussing new leadership roles that are evolving into today's organizations. He makes a critical point that if leaders are not proactive about managing their organizations' culture, that culture will ultimately manage them. As is often quoted in organization development circles, "Culture eats strategy for breakfast!" He also outlines the steps leaders can take to conduct their own cultural analysis. While the book is intended to be academic and is fairly dense, the organizational stories Schein uses throughout the book as illustrative examples add life to the book. A great resource for any organizational leader!

Probably skip the audiobook for a text copy

While this book is the classic on organizational culture, it's also incredibly verbose and tedious. There's value here, but a 100 page version with another 300+ pages of examples linked to it would be a lot more useful. There were also a huge number of really dated examples (pre technology, companies were mainly dead dinosaurs like DEC), which is because the book is in 4th edition and only lightly revised.

I also listened on audible, rather than reading, which made it extra-tedious. (Textbook pricing for the printed or e-book, single credit for the audiobook, so...). I'd recommend reading this as an e-book instead.
