A perfect read for the Plt Cmdr and lower leader

This book does a great job of establishing the foundation for incoming junior officers and newly promoted NCOs. A great refresher for TBS graduates on a lot of things we forgot we learned

A Definite Esteem Boost...

I am woman, hear me roar. I enjoyed this book but a section of it rubbed me the wrong way. The author says that winning women need to build mutually beneficial relationships and should not spend the same time on with a sales clerk as someone who can help them advance in their career. I guess this does not jive with my Christian perspective where you are nice to everyone because we are all human and deserve the same respect and love regardless of where we come from and where we are going. So a calculating method does not equal winning in my book.

This book is a definite confidence boost and I realized that I place too much importance on how others view me and that this can be limiting. I only have a problem when things become calculating.

Like reading a text book

Not bad info but really hard to get through. Painful like reading a text book or listening to a never ending lecture at school.

Get ready to blame everything on your childhood

What disappointed you about Nice Girls Just Don't Get It?

I just couldn't get through the initial emphasis on rooting out childhood trauma to explain adult dysfunction. As an adult, I believe I am in control of my behavior and future. I don't need to rehash childhood drama in order to move forward in life. Rather, I need solid tactics that will help me be a better communicator.

I bought the book after listening the interview with the author. Unfortunately the book did not give me practical recommendations nor in investment nor in life behavior. Language of the book is unnecessarily "scientific". While the experience and PhD degree of the author are not questioned, this book gives little to no practical advise nor in investment nor in life...

Hard-hitting, Practical and Pithy Wisdom

I [usually] like it when authors read their own material because their passion for the story/topic typically comes through more clearly. Anderson's hard-hitting, practical advice is even more impacting because of his narrating. Most of the sections here are strong, but the material on building a healthy staff is exceptional. As one who's violated many of Dave's common-sense principles, I was grateful for the encouraging "I've-been-there-too" coaching tone. I've got this book on my "Read Yearly" list.

Less than impressive

I had very high expectations from this book. I had hoped to learn some useful techniques in improving my technique of posing questions. I was disappointed to find out that 90% of book only talks about the importance of asking questions. It would not be an overstatement that this 6 hour book can be summarized in less than 20 minutes.

A rough read

First, I'll say that I think the content of this book is important, and that although it was painful, I learned something and it had made me think about my interactions with my co-workers. That being said:

1) The book could have been a lot shorter. It was very repetitive, and many sections were just lists, which don't read well. Was this a 1 hour PowerPoint that got expanded into a 7 hour book?

2) I expected this to be narrated well, since it was read by the author. However, his reading was so slow and halting that it was hard to believe that he had written the words given his apparent unfamiliarity with them. I have to believe that he was the victim of a bad coach who insisted that he slow down, unfortunately to the point of going below the tempo of natural speech.

Great Book, maybe a better read though

A very interesting take from a different perspective. I never really thought about learning and essentially leading from asking questions but when you think about it, it makes perfect sense. Overall, I found the writing and material to be outstanding and I definitely learned a great deal but with that said, I definitely struggled listening to the narrators voice. Also, the part on the Boston Red Sox racism during the 1950s was very intriguing.

Terrible Read

The narration on this is horrible. Content is long and belaboring. I listened to the whole book, but gave up interest after the first 2 hours. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone.

awesome except last chapter

great book... I will reread this and use it for leadership management discussions at work. my #1 complaint is the shameless plug for USC in the final chapter. I would skip that chapter. otherwise, I loved this book. one of the best leadership books I have read in a while.

Good Content, Not thrilled with author or writing style

I like the core principles of the book but at times Sample gets so carried away with his accomplishments at USC that it distracts from the content. I am all for establishing credibility as a leader but there are a few distinct sections of the book that I feel he made 10x longer than they needed to be for the purposes of touting his personal successes.
