Summary of The Phoenix Project by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford | Includes Analysis
    Preview:
The Phoenix Project is a business allegory about how a fictional company becomes profitable after a crisis-driven change in its information technology management style.
Bill Palmer is promoted to vice president of IT at Parts Unlimited, an automotive parts manufacturer and retailer, at a time when it is struggling financially and trying to launch a new, innovative project.
Each day of Palmer's career as VP of IT is characterized by urgent unplanned work for which the department does not have enough resources. While working on projects for other department heads, who have varying levels of appreciation for IT and its challenges, Palmer meets a potential Parts Unlimited board member, Erik Reid, who urges Palmer to think of his IT department more like a production factory...

Following along with the 12 key takeaways I was better able to understand the lesson behind the allegory
IT management is not my thing, and I'm not even going to pretend to understand it at all. But hearing that there was a popular book that presented a business allegory about overcoming crises made me interested in "The Phoenix Project." Kim's allegory about a fictional company is based in fact and explores how to become profitable despite set-backs. Working more cohesively, the IT department engages in constant improvement and preventative projects.
This Instaread review distills the book into the core concepts. Following along with the 12 key takeaways I was better able to understand the lesson behind the allegory, instead of being caught up in the story of this fictional company. I really enjoyed this summary; I was given a copy to review it.
Excellent Companion Piece to the Novel
The "Cliff's Notes" for the Phoenix Project. Like most PowerPoint presentations, the bulleted list delivery is not as memorable, but it is excellent as a pocket reference once you've read the novel.
Every business leader and IT professional should read this
This is a Summary and Analysis about "The Phoenix Project: A Novel about IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win," by Gene Kim, Kevin Behr, and George Spafford. It is a business allegory about how a fictional company becomes profitable after a crisis-driven change in its information technology management style. There are 12 key takeaways that highlight the main ideas of the original book.
I have been in IT, IT management and business for years. The original book intrigued me but I decided to read this Summary book from Instareads first before diving into the whole 345 pages of the original book. Every business leader and IT professional should read this book. Even if it's a business allegory, it captures brilliantly the dilemmas that face companies which depend on IT, and offers real-world solutions.
This summary book also provides the reader information on the author's style and perspective.

Buy the book too. You won't be disappointed.
Would you consider the audio edition of Innovating Lean Six Sigma to be better than the print version?
As many of us who follow Lean and Six Sigma know we do so for knowledge. Simply reading a book or attending a class isn't always enough. I've read and listened to this and many other books regarding Lean Six Sigma. Both audio and hard copy together are the way to go. If you have a weak foundation in the principals, or are just starting out this probably isn't for you. There are many details that you probably won't understand. If you are a Black Belt or Master BB this may be for you. That of course depends on how well you understand the concepts.
Very high level- mainly success stories of consulting business.
Very little detail in the concepts or tools. A lot of references to their consulting practice or success stories. Detailed guidance on tools or case studies that include challenges or lessons learned from failures would have been helpful as well.
After finishing the audiobook I feel like I listened to a collect of blog posts or articles that are intended to drive engagement of their consulting business.
    not impressed
summed up: team work, nothing really special.

Robert B. Cialdini's Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion examines the compliance methods by which marketers, salespeople, and others, such as cult leaders, pressure people into doing things they would not otherwise do. There are six basic compliance tools: reciprocity, consistency, social proof, liking, authority, and scarcity. Listeners can learn specific techniques to resist each.
Humans rely on standard responses in many situations. For example, when one person gives another a gift, the recipient automatically feels indebted and is inclined to reciprocate. These mental shortcuts are usually helpful both to the individual and to society as a whole. Reciprocity helps facilitate mutual aid, which in turn helps solidify social bonds. These bonds in turn strengthen both the group and the individuals within it....

    Format: Unabridged
Length: 3 hrs and 31 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-21-16
    Publisher: Bamford Associates, LLC
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 22 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
Some say business strategy is 50 percent art and 50 percent science. The truth is probably closer to 65 percent art and 35 percent science, but the science of strategy remains critical. While art must be developed from within, science can be taught - and it forms the foundation of any business strategy.
In The Strategy Mindset, strategy consultant, author, and internationally renowned speaker, Dr. Chuck Bamford, provides a simple yet practical guide to creating corporate strategy using well researched and battle-tested approaches.
This is not a cumbersome textbook filled with academic language. Nor is it a reworking of popular strategy ideas that are useless in practice. Instead, The Strategy Mindset provides actionable applications of strategic thinking tailored to the realities of business.
Dr. Bamford has refined this approach to make it a practical and efficient model for the design and implementation of strategy. Although mastery of these approaches takes time, a motivated management team can effectively implement them and see a profound impact on their company.
Practice the art of strategy...but master the science first.
    Members Reviews:
Short, concise, but informative guide on developing and implementing a winning strategy for your business.
Disclosure: Dr Bamford was one of my professors at TCU in my MBA program. BUT, I did buy this book on my own as I was interested in giving it a read. While I am not in a position to set strategy in my current company, I still found the book well worth reading to gain a better understanding of the design and implementation of strategy in today's environment.
Dr. Bamford makes a strong case for the need for a well-thought out AND well-implemented strategy. One which begins by examining what their CUSTOMERS (particularly what he identifies as their "perfect customers") want and value, and then describes how their company can compete against the competition in ways that make sense. At around 115 pages, this is not an academic text, and that was intentional so as to not bog the reader down with complex jargon and formulas. At best, this could be the book that opens your eyes to developing a winning corporate strategy. At the very least, it will give you insights into developing such a strategy and ensure you hire the right consultants to guide you through the process.
had a great impact on me and put a new perspective on ...
What a relief to read something that is not the same book with a different cover. Right out of the gate Dr. Bamford provokes thought while challenging traditional beliefs and systems that have been put into place many years ago and really have no bearing on evaluating a business. Chapter 4, although relatively short, had a great impact on me and put a new perspective on my business. He has created an understanding of standard items vs. exceptional items in your business and where and when to apply them.
This a great book and I highly recommend anyone to read it, even if you do not own a business.
    Great Strategy Book
Probably the most succinct playbook I've read on building and executing strategy. It cuts through all the crap and myths about business strategy and crystallizes it down some absolute truths.

    Language: English
    Release date: 02-29-16
    Publisher: Berrett-Koehler Publishers
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 42 votes
    Genres: Business, Leadership
    Publisher's Summary:
This book reveals what it takes for consultants of all types, as well as organizational leaders, to be really helpful in dealing with the complex, systemic, constantly changing organizational problems of today. They need to rapidly create a relationship of trust and openness that enables clients, subordinates, and team members to reveal what is really on their minds and to jointly develop a sense of what is the problem and what kind of adaptive response could best deal with it.
Schein first introduced some of these concepts in his foundational 1969 book Process Consultation, which is still in use today. But now clients don't have the time or patience for the endless questioning that characterized much of process consultation. And clients still expect consultants to hand them answers. But Schein has come to realize that answers from outsiders are useless, because they're often working the wrong problem, don't understand the client organization's culture, or ignore the fact that constant change makes today's solutions obsolete tomorrow.
To achieve a joint sense of what to do requires consultants and other helpers to develop a different kind of relationship with clients - a set of attitudes and behaviors that Schein calls humble consulting. Schein shows how helpers can display from the moment of first contact a level of caring and curiosity to move from relationships of professional distance to relationships of personalized trust and openness. And he gives many examples of the profound changes in mindset, behavior, and daily actions that flow from this new helpful consulting model.

Really enjoyed the to the point attitude of the book. The book genuinely goes over 17 tips for managing virtual times but I would have like to see more stories or examples of these tips helped a situation.
    Good concise content!
The author does a great job giving you the information you need in a short concise easy to listen to book. Good actionable tips and techniques. I booked you on the 9:30 flight.
    Very nice and practical
The book is very concise and easy to follow. It gives exactly what it promises. It codifies some 'known things' and creates a context for why they are essential when managing virtual teams.
There weren't any real earth shattering revelations but it's worth buying because its perfectly packaged for time strapped individuals.
The writer offers some tools through his website which I haven't been able to reach because the link quoted is a page with quite a bit of information (landing page )and the documents offered aren't easy to find.
I recommend the book it's worth a listen.

    Beyond the Hero's Journey
Would you consider the audio edition of Illuminate to be better than the print version?
NO ... but I am VERY Happy that Duarte finally put out a book on Audible.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Illuminate?
The first few chapters were the best.
The case studies seem to be the same ones all the top consultants use in their presentations.
I very much liked the inside look at how Duarte applies what she teaches to her own firm. I also liked how candid they were in sharing some of the bumps they've experience throughout the years.
What about Patti Sanchezs performance did you like?
She is a PRO... and very easy to listen to.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
No crying, just the occasional laugh.
    Any additional comments?
I very much wish that the Audio was coupled with the Kindle Edition--Whispersync.
And I am surprised that there wasn't a supplemental handout to download (at least not as of this review on 2-16-16.
It was only after looking at the Kindle Edition, that I noticed how many great drawings, illustrations, and pictures I missed out on :(
    okay
I heard most of the stories before. Still good to be reminded. I listened at 1.5x
    Brilliant approach to leading change!
If you are a leader who cares about your team members, the insights in this book can provide you with the tools you need to educate, motivate and inspire people during times of change. It will also help you to recognize when change is needed and The various stages of the journey. Each stage has a unique problem and Nancy and Patty offer practical approaches that move you and your team forward. The case studies aren't just "success stories." Instead they illustrate real-life challenges that can occur while implementing these approaches and how to overcome them. I also purchased the hard copy of the book as a reference. It includes a foldout Communication Toolkit that outlines each stage and how to use speeches, stories, ceremonies, and symbols for each stage.

    Excellent Summary of Lean Concepts
    Any additional comments?
This is an excellent summary of the Lean and Six Sigma (LSS) concepts. For those who are new to these ideas, it should give you a basic idea of the methodology involved.
It will not give you the knowledge to go out and immediately implement the LSS ideas. I don't know if any book would do that. But it will at least better familiarize you with what sort of things are focused on, as well as the terminology and framework behind LSS.
There is some repetition of key-points. Some people might not like that. But, if you're driving in your car and can't give the audio-book your full attention, it's nice, particularly when you think to yourself, "What did the author just say?" (and prepare to rewind). Or maybe that just happens to me? Also, I think that by repeating some key information, it helps with the memorization of these concepts.
In any case, you won't be a LSS Blackbelt when you're done listening to this audio-book.
