    Series Needs numbering
My only criticism would be that I was not able to work out which sequence to listen to the stories, I managed to listen to them the wrong way around. Didn't spoil it too much, but it covered why parts of the sequel didn't ring any bells. Generally still a good story though.
    Excellent!
This book was a lot more entertaining and much more exciting, than most of the past books I have read. Either way, exciting and once again, full of gripping mayhem and intense drama.
    Was disapointed
Not up to his usual standard was very disapointed
not what you come to expect from the Ludlum stable.
    The story only gets better
Jason Bourne finds out more about himself and although the story seems a little long, I was captivated right till the end.

Action packed WW II war strory
Higgins is the master war storyteller. During WWII a fictional English Channel island, St. Pierre, is occupied and fortified by the German army. LtCol Owen Morgan and a small band of British commandos attempt to secretly mine the small harbor and destroy the island fortress. Pick this thriller up and you'll not put it down. This fictional novel was published in 1970 and is a first rate adventure.
    Heroic Deeds
It's the end of the war, and no one should expect a wounded commando to put his life on the line one more time, but that's exactly what happens to Higgins' newest hero, Lt. Col. Owen Morgan. He sacrifices his freedom to rescue a German sailor on a mission that has already failed miserably and is almost executed by the embittered Nazi commander of the isolated outpost in the Channel Islands. I don't normally enjoy reading books written in first person--Higgins took me by surprise--but I found myself turning the pages and reading on anyway. Not only has Morgan returned to his island home hoping to reignite the love of his childhood years, he's there to find out if the Nazis can hang onto the Channel Islands for another year after Germany has surrendered and thus cause more havoc on the sea. It turns out to be a fool's mission set up by a jealous boyhood rival who misinforms the British deliberately to betray Morgan and his lady love, but in Morgan's absence, she has fallen in love with a very decent German submariner. Conflict between friends, enemies who becomes friends, and the raging sea becomes the back drop for another hair raising tale by Higgins. The first person narrative reduces it to a four star for me.
    Thought provoking.
Thought provoking story of Love and war, with everthing in between. Hard to imagine being in the situation the cast of this book find themselves. Walking a thin line between life and death. Enemies to death in war, friends in other circumstances.Lots of undercurrents.Gave it a five star, for the beautiful prose in the writing throughout.Good story good book.
    Five Stars
The book arrived quickly and was in good order. I also loved the story.
A Great Read ... One of Jack Higgin's Best
I've read over 60 of Jack Higgins' books and this would probably be my favourite. A slight deviation from his usual theme and tone which made the book even more engaging than normal. I highly recommend it.

After being blackballed by the CIA, Milo Weaver finds himself compelled to re-join the elite network of top-secret black-ops agents called 'tourists'. But first he's required to prove his loyalty by killing an innocent teenage girl in Berlin. He has a daughter not much younger than the girl he's been tasked to abduct. As the gripping action unwinds, the brilliant, obese German espionage administrator searches for a traitor among the tourists.

"Milo Weaver has nowhere to turn but back to the CIA." Ummm, no, he has plenty of other things he could do which wouldn't include kidnapping a young girl for a reason unknown to him and turning her over to shady characters he doesn't know or killing an old man in the shower. He could sell Tupperware or become a locksmith, for two. Mr Steinhauer's style is fluid, showing good vocabulary and cultural scope, unlike so many of his competitors, hence the two stars. But to have a drug-gobbling, chainsmoking contract killer who leaves his "family" on their own in search of adventure as your lead character is problematic from a good many angles. We're obviously supposed to feel sympathy for Milo, but I'd just as soon someone put a bullet through his head. It would be a relief.
I was actually hoping that Weaver would die after he is shot point blank for the second time in two books just so I wouldn't be
I found Steinhauer's follow up his TOURIST to be increasingly disappointing. It started well, but the last one hundred pages were flat, the plot tired, and the ending indifferent. In-between there is a blatant rip off of the Connie Sachs character from Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, and a failed attempt to create a true enemy from China. By the end, I was actually hoping that Weaver would die after he is shot point blank for the second time in two books just so I wouldn't be tempted to see if the next book in the series was better.
Outstanding espionage novel - Greene, le Carré, et al.
Have read all of Steinhauer's novels, and feel he is one of the best writers around. The five-novel Eastern European police procedurals series (all that and so much more) is a remarkable and noteworthy body of work that should be read. The Tourist books have exceptional characters, intriguing plots, and marvelous tone and atmosphere. Steinhauer manages (like Greene or le Carré) to convey menace and danger without resorting to excessive violence or Bond villains. He underplays the violence (the banality of evil), substituting instead, fear inspired by doubt, flawed characters caught in moral and ethical dilemmas, not so distant from our own much smaller lives, and his characters' flaws feel desperately close to our own. I wish I could be more specific or precise as to why his work is so compelling, but I guarantee that you will be richly rewarded for reading his books - all of them.
September, 2012: Amazon, $6 for the paperback and $10 for the Kindle!!! Seriously greedy.
A worthy successor to 'The Tourist'
I loved 'The tourist', the first Milo Weaver book.

    Publisher's Summary:
A BBC Radio 4 full-cast dramatisation of the bestselling novel by John le Carré, starring James Fox, Harriet Walter and Julian Rhind-Tutt. Magnus Pym, Counsellor at the British Embassy, is hosting a dinner party at his home in Vienna when he receives an unexpected telephone call that will profoundly affect his life. Once the guests have gone, Pym breaks the news to his wife, Mary: his father, Rick, is dead. In a state of shock, he says something Mary cannot understand - 'After all these years, I'm free.'
Magnus flies back to England to attend the funeral - and doesn't return. As Mary and MI6 spymaster Jack Brotherhood desperately try to find out his whereabouts, it soon becomes clear that Pym has been keeping secrets from both his family and his employers, the British Intelligence Service. Hiding out in a remote cottage in Devon, where he goes by the name of Mr Canterbury, Magnus begins to write his memoirs - retracing his rise and fall and revealing how Rick led him step by step into a double life of deception, broken promises and betrayal... Adapted from the John le Carré novel by Rene Basilico.
    Members Reviews:
    A decent dramatization
This dramatization, in eight half-hour episodes, apparently dates from 1993. Rene Basilico's adaptation of the novel is skillful, though perhaps inevitably some important elements of the story (particularly to do with Pym's childhood) are omitted or only mentioned briefly. The production is good, and James Fox is excellent in the lead role. My only complaint is that some of the acting is at times a little cartoonish. It's as if the program came at a time of transition between an older, "stagey" style of voice acting and a modern, more naturalistic approach. Fortunately the problem is mostly confined to minor characters. Although this program is not quite up to the standard of the BBC's recent (superb) cycle of le Carre's Smiley novels, it is still effective and enjoyable overall. Here's hoping the BBC will release more le Carre dramatizations!
    Not finished yet

A great dramatization, not the complete novel
What did you love best about A Perfect Spy (Dramatised)?
It's a nice condensation of the novel, which I have less time to read or even listen to. The story is told very nicely and the actors do a wonderful job- as they do in all the Le Carre' adaptations. Those adapted by Rene Basilico are the best in my opinion. They include The Perfect Spy, The Russia House, A Small Town In Germany, and the two Smiley adaptations: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Smiley's People (the versions starring Bernard Hepton- sadly not yet available on Audible).
What other book might you compare A Perfect Spy (Dramatised) to and why?
A Small Town In Germany and The Russia House, both dramatized and available on Audible. I recommend them both.
What does the narrators bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
A clear understanding of how the lines are read. The British idiom can be lost in print but the actors make things clearly understood. I haven't listened to Mr.

    Members Reviews:
    Interesting but not Higgins' best
I admit I'm a fan of Jack Higgins (a pen-name for UK author Harry Patterson), and I've read about 12 of his books. ButThe Bormann Testament (PAUL CHAVASSE)made me think maybe I've read too many of them.
You know how, when you read a lot of books by one author, you can start to predict how they're going to play out and who the surprise bad-guy is (the one who's supposed to be a good guy)? That's the case here.
The premise is promising -- Martin Bormann is still alive and in hiding, 15+ years after WW2 ended, and he's written a tell-all book revealing persons in high places who always claimed they did not support Hitler and had nothing to do with the Nazis -- but in reality they're still around, closet Nazis trying for a comeback. And the chase is on for Bormann and the manuscript.
Unfortunately, in this book I had it all figured out WAY too early (about one-third into the story). I read the whole book to see if I was right about certain plot developments, and yes, it's basically the same story as several of Higgins' other Nazi-themed books with just some of the names & details changed (and many of them the same).
Of course, this is no guarantee I won't pick up another Higgins book. But maybe I'll move on from the WW2 Nazi era.
    A short engaging read
First, I'm a Jack Higgins fan. His writing is always engaging, and the plots don't depend on miraculous intervention. This offering, like many others, is a single mission plot without a lot of extraneous activity. My only real problem is that the book is short - less than a two hour read. I enjoyed the characters, the plot and the twists. And, I plan on reading the next in the series.
Jack Higgins always weaves a great tale, and this is a particularly good one.
Jack Higgins always weaves a great tale, and this is a particularly good one. As a big fan of WWII stories, especially ones concerning the Third Reich, I found this story about Martin Bormann, Hitler's right hand man, to be particularly enthralling. Bormann holds a special place in the minds of WWII history buffs and conspiracy theorists because it's unclear as to what happened to him. Did he die as Berlin fell, or did he escape to South America? In either case, it is clear that he knew Hitler's inner thoughts and kept Hitler's secrets.

    Critic Reviews:
Fans of the late Michael Crichton will enjoy Dionne's exciting second ecothriller. Crisp writing keeps the pace fast, and the tight interweaving of story lines bodes well for this author's future efforts. (Publishers Weekly)The narrative flows well, the characters are sharp, and the setting is explosive. While the chaos compels the reader to turn pages, the sciencereinforces a scenario that is all too real and terrifying. (Romantic Times Book Review)
    Members Reviews:
    Wonderful narration!
I'm not going to say anything here about the book or the story because I'm the author. I do want to say that I just listened to Mark Boyett's reading of my novel, and couldn't be more pleased! The level of emotion he brings to my work is just fantastic. He really nailed the characters, and his accents are so much fun. I could happily listen to him all day - and just did! 5 stars for Mark - a truly excellent narrator.
    Outstanding!
I enjoy reading this author's work. Dionne continues her series in fine style. I won't write any spoilers, but I really like her character Phillip Dumas and his role in the book. The writing is tight and the dialogue masterful! I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and hope to see more!
    Outstanding!!
Once again when man tries to control or manipulate nature, nature fights back and wins. This story is the opposite of Freeze Point but not only in temperature. However the action intrigue and all out life or death struggle have the same gripping intensity. This author has a wonderful grasp of nature and science with the ability to combine it with heart-stopping action. Both books are well worth the time!!
    Got bogged down with politics.
I enjoy thrillers, and found this story fast-paced and entertaining at first, but the characters kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Most of the main charactesr were too liberal for my tastes and the eco-preaching got on my nerves. I sympathize with the message, but at the same time, I read fiction to be entertained, not to be told how often we are destroying the earth even if it may be true.

    Superb narration
Michael Jayston gives such a wonderful performance, you can't imagine anyone else reading Le Carré. He is George Smiley to perfection.
    Best stories I've ever heard
    Any additional comments?
Tried to switch for another author after listening for two books in succession, but hardly finished listening for mere part. I rushed back to my third title, and was stunned by the great relief I felt the minute I started again. John Le Carre, for my mind, is a genius of truly intellectual novels. I'm not a native speaker, so I excitedly enjoyed learning the language of his books.
Great book - great plot - great Smiley
This book is one of my all time favourite booksh. Alongside Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy this my absolute favourite Le Carre novel.
    excellent choice
Would you consider the audio edition of Smiley's People to be better than the print version?
I don't normally compare, I enjoy both in different reasons. I enjoy Audio books in the Car on my commute and If I am travelling.
The written books I enjoy if I get a free couple of hours.
Who was your favorite character and why?
George Smiley, a close second Peter guillam and Oliver Lacon. George has a conscience which must be both an asset and a liability in the Job. He is never allowed to just retire and maybe he just can't whilst Karla is sitting atop moscow centre.
Peter isn't as central as he was in Tinker Tailor or The Honourable Schoolboy, but I think he looks to George more like an Uncle than a Friend and Colleague. He never really gets the full picture from George until last and George seems to protect Peter from Sol Enderby and Co.
I seen so many Oliver Lacons in my career. He is Georges superior but Oliver needs George more that George needs Oliver. George is the type of Journeyman in a firm that knows his stuff, knows how things work etc and Oliver has the top job and needs George to keep him looking good.
This time Oliver's wife has left him and I think he suddenly realises the pain George must have felt over his difficult marriage to Ann. He wants George's advice but George does what a real friend would do and let Oliver talk without giving advice.
What about Michael Jaystons performance did you like?
    Excellent as Usual.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
During the interogation in Switzerland, without giving away the plot. George is compared to Karla. This is the beginning of the conclusion when George realises that he has become his nemesis.
    Any additional comments?
Although I Enjoyed the Book. The Ending was very Swift and Bare. Both in the Honourable Schoolboy and Smileys people I just felt that there could have been more to say. For example what happened at Sarratt afterwards with their Golddust etc.
What became of George, Peter and Oliver. After reading the trio They have become like family.

    Magnificent reading, pure Graham Greene.
Where does The Confidential Agent rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
    The best so far.
What other book might you compare The Confidential Agent to and why?
John LeCarre, because of Greene's unromantic view of war and espionage.
What about Tim Pigott-Smiths performance did you like?
I have been unable to separate the actor from the role since his indelible performance in The Jewel in the Crown. This reading severed the connection--he becomes so many characters, so seamlessly that I sit in the car, in the cold, unable to stop listening to the recording I am playing on my car system. He's a marvelous reader.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No, I have enjoyed the breaks, but I would have like my drives to be longer!
te 2 nts (too intense) for me
What did you like best about The Confidential Agent? What did you like least?
Best: intelligent, articulate, gripping. Worst: I'm sorry to say that this book was too frightening for me to finish, A combination of uncertainty, unfamiliarity, unsavouryness and uneasiness scared me off after a few chapters.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Sorry, I didn't get there.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Tim Pigott-Smith?
I would and will. I have listened to many,
Did The Confidential Agent inspire you to do anything?
search my psyche for the reason it puts me off. When I was a kiddie I couldn't listen to the lone ranger episodes wherein LR was suspected of the crime. Maybe it's like that. Maybe it's my fear of the totally unhappy endings that Brighton Rock taught me to expect from Greene.
Am unusual Graham Greene well performed by TPS
Where does The Confidential Agent rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I'm not interested in rankings like this. I recommend it, so listen to it and make up your own mind.
What other book might you compare The Confidential Agent to, and why?
There's a touch of nightmarish surrealism about this so in part it reminded me of Kafka's The Trial. It's also reminiscent of some pulp noir novels of the period, luridly exaggerated and unlikely in tone but still compelling as it goes on. Also a touch of Conrad's The Secret Agent and John Buchan's Thirty Nine Steps.
Have you listened to any of Tim Pigott-Smiths other performances? How does this one compare?
He is very good but the novel is a demanding one to read and I'm not sure the protagonist's foreign accent is absolutely necessary, although he is the 'confidential agent' of the government forces in the Spanish Civil War so I'm sure the makers would argue it is.

But when the story is leaked to an ambitious journalist, the spy is burned, brutally tortured, and executed. The director of the CIA isnt about to let the callous sacrifice of his valuable spy go unpunished.
Joe DeMarcos boss, Speaker of the House John Fitzpatrick Mahoney, has his own reasons to get to the bottom of the leak. He once had a fling with the journalist, and now that shes in jail for refusing to reveal her source, she is threatening to tell all unless he helps get her out.

This latest Joe DeMarco thriller is classic Mike Lawson, featuring fascinating characters, inside-the-beltway intrigue, and a gripping plot packed with surprises.

    Fast-paced adventure with rich characters
Mike Lawson's House Justice is tag-lined as a Joe DeMarco Thriller. The tag line states the truth - it is a thriller. Lawson, a much under-appreciated writer, has developed Joe DeMarco as a solid action protagonist. He surrounds DeMarco with a variety of interesting collaborators. From DeMarco's boss, Speaker-of-the-House John Fitzpatrick Mahoney, to old and new colleagues, Lawson's rich characters stabilize the achilles heel of most action-adventure novels - plots that tend to stretch the believable. Because DeMarco's allies are sometimes reluctant, they're more fun. The villains, particularly in House Justice, are both numerous and not too obvious. As for plot predictability, be prepared for an interesting conclusion.
The audiobook performer, Joe Barrett did a very solid job. Though I wasn't particularly thrilled with the voice he gave DeMarco (a minor nit-pick), Barrett delivered an excellent range of voices, including the necessary subtleties for age and gender differences. Barrett is the 2nd reader (Scott Brick) in 3 audiobooks. For abridged versions, there were two more. For continuities sake, I hope the author can stabilize his reader choices. In addition, Audible skipped two very good books, House Rules and House Secrets.
If you want a fast-paced, fun experience, filled with interesting characters and plot twists, this - and other Mike Lawson books - will not disappoint.
    He's Back!
It is great to see a new arrival from Mike Lawson on Audible. In this story, DeMarco is faced with a twisted conspiracy to sort out. The plot gets a little confusing at times, but the story is well written, the characters are multi dimensional and the ending is satisfying. The narrarator balances his voice between female, male, American and foreign accents. I enjoyed this listen and hope to see more by this author available soon!
    Another great story-
Thank you, Mike, for another well crafted story with interesting, well developed characters and creative humor.
