Length: 11 hrs and 45 mins
    Language: English

    Publisher's Summary:
Drummond Clark was once a spy of legendary proportions. Now Alzheimer's disease has taken its toll and he's just a confused old man who's wandered away from home, waiting for his son to fetch him.
When Charlie Clark takes a break from his latest losing streak at the track to bring Drummond back to his Brooklyn home, they find it blown sky high - and then bullets start flying in every direction. At first, Charlie thinks his Russian creditors are employing aggressive collection tactics. But once Drummond effortlessly hot-wires a car as their escape vehicle, Charlie begins to suspect there's much more to his father than meets the eye.
He soon discovers that Drummonds unremarkable career as an appliance salesman was actually a clever cover for an elaborate plan to sell would-be terrorists faulty nuclear detonators. Drummond's intricate knowledge of the device is extremely dangerous information to have rattling around in an Alzheimer's-addled brain. The CIA wants to contain him - and so do some other shady characters who send Charlie and Drummond on a wild chase that gives father-and-son quality time a whole new meaning.
With Once a Spy, Keith Thomson makes his debut on the thriller stage with energy, wit, and style to spare.
    Critic Reviews:
"Huffington Post columnist Thomson's wildly original debut, a darkly satirical thriller, features an unlikely, if endearing, father-son spy duo....Poignant themes of love and redemption underpin an action-packed story line that includes exotic locales, high-tech gadgetry, and international intrigue." (Publishers Weekly)

    Off beat thriller
I loved this non-formulaic, quirky spy story. The titular spy has Alzheimer's and is therefore a threat to his former employers. He connects with his estranged compulsive gambler son as they try to save themselves. It is an unusual mix of seriousness and levity and these characters were likeable and had dignity instead of being melodramatic or pathetic. It is over the top as far as action goes - way too much gunfire and killing - and that detracted from the story for me, but that is my only complaint. It was a very enjoyable listen and I recommend it.
    Action all the way!
This is a non-stop action novel, where the father & son protagonists constantly escape the frying pan only to end up in the fire. Charlie, is something of a ne'er-do-well, suffering in the midst of the mess he has made of his life. On top of his own troubles, Charlie discovers that his aging father, Drummond, was once a spy, and is now marked for death. Drummond has alzheimer's disease, which could cause him to reveal high-level secrets that he carries in his head. The two manage to escape hopeless situation after hopeless situation throughout the story. Along the way Charlie gains respect for his father and confidence in his own talents. This is what I would call a "guy" story, and for me the constant action/escape sequences got repetitive. But the characters were so likable, that overall it was quite enjoyable.
    I want more
I enjoyed the concept of the book but had doubts about how the plot could be sustained. I was delightfully wrong. The plot keeps evolving and surprising and you continue to smile all the way through the book. The characters are nicely drawn and are deep enough to be distinctive and memorable.

Might have been a good story....
This might have been a good story... but the narrator was the absolute pits and I found myself trying not to listen. The narrator did not put any intonation into the story he just read it like a drone. Too bad the producer could not hear this and either corrected him or chosen another reader.
Can't get past the terrible narration
I'd stay away from this book, the narration makes it almost painful to listen. In fact, it's bad enough that you probably will stop listening as I did.
Audible should adopt some sort on quality control process to keep this from happening.

    Too Much TIme
The story was OK, but too many chapters and too much reading of the actual time. At some points the time ended a chapter and began a chapter. Hearing 1:42PM followed by 1:43PM got very tedius and annoying. Certainly not worth the time.
Not worth it - needed edits and rewrites
This one rambled on and needed edits and rewrites to make it a good one. Too bad, it had real potential.
    Flat Narrative, Poorly Read
Unconvincing adventures of testosterone-charged road warrior. Characters are underdeveloped, 2-dimensional. Narrator struggles unsuccessfully with rapid changes among accents (his version of German is particularly painful). Listener must endure numerous, one-sided Blackberry conversations- we suffer sufficiently from these in real life, why replicate as "entertainment"?

Almost flawless reading of an almost flawless book
Traditionally female narrators have been disliked by audio book fans. Maggie Mash should put an end to that. She is almost flawless. The one tiny niggle is that she reads a little slowly for my liking. Her cast of voices however is wide and consistent with every character firmly rooted in place and time. Men sound like men and women like women. Which is not true of all narrators.
Americans sound realistically American not just American-ish same for Israelis etc etc . Regional British accents are pulled off well as are Scottish accents. None of which fall in to parody. Although again some people might find it a little slow especially in the last act where things start warming up.
All this is important because the plot of Dead Line is complex and international. A bad reader could have spoiled what is an intricate and engaging book. I found the world of office politics and the blending of professional spy life and personal life very convincing. Although I would have been happy with an (even more) low key ending.
If you like Len Deightons Berlin game you will like this.
    Slow Start but worth it.
This was one of those books you struggle to settle with initially I think the reason for this could lie in the fact you are introduced to large number of characters very quickly and establishing who is the central one is frustrating.
I did listen to the first 30mins and gave up until much later, when i have to say it was well worth going back to. Its well written well narrated and reveals itself as a very high quality piece of work which you would expect from such a renowned author.
    A bit naive
Disappointing. As Dame Stella Rimington was DG of MI6 I expected something better. This story is na?ve and cumbersome.
If you like thrillers don't bother, if you like Mills and Boon this might just do it for you.
    Not The Best Written Thriller
In 2004 Stella Rimington published her first novel, "At Risk". I vaguely remembered enjoying it and hadn't heard much from her until I saw "Dead Line" on Audible. Both books are part of the "Liz Caryle" series - the first and fourth respectively. Unfortunately "Dead Line" was sadly lacking the qualities of a classic thriller. The first part of the two part download kept my interest. However, with over 3 hours left of the second part I found myself getting a bit restless and just wanting things to speed up and end. By this stage the plot ceased to be gripping and any twists were simple and minor. I also sometimes have problems with thrillers written by women and this author falls into the trap of others by describing the emotions and love-life of the main (female character) in such a way that may appeal to some woman but not to some men such as myself. Overall an fairly enjoyable enough thriller that ultimately fails to deliver the punches that so many other authors can do. After "Dead Line" I'm reluctant to continue reading any more of the "Liz Caryle" series.
    Awful voices!
This is the first book I have heard read by Maggie Mash. Her narration of the story is effective - but the voices are AWFUL! Every character sounds as though they have had a minor stroke and I found it very distracting, as it really disturbs the flow.

Spy Thriller Takes Time to Develop Characters Fully
I love Bill Buckley's books. My father hooked me on them many years ago, and I finally am getting to complete the Blackford Oakes series.
    Enjoyable Cold War Spy Tale
It's 1958 and a drunken Chairmen Khrushchev has just quoted verbatum from the top secret minutes of the National Security Council to President Eisenhower. Thus ensues an operation to find the KGB mole. The search takes our hero, CIA agent Blackford Oakes, to Germany, past the iron curtain into East Berlin.
So, how does Blacky come to find his U-2 experiencing an unrecoverable flameout over the USSR? Will he leave Lubyanka prison alive?
The suspense is wonderfully woven in this tale of suave, hansome and daring Blackford Oakes. I hated to put this one down. The ending is cleaver and unmistakably Buckley. This is a fun read.

Winter in Venice and a killing frost has cut deep into CIA cleaner Micah Dalton's heart as he heads out into the night to erase the last members of the Serbian gang who shot his lover, a hand-to-hand vendetta Dalton does not intend to survive. And he might not have, if a mysterious jade box containing a stainless steel glasscutter had not arrived at his villa. The glasscutter has powerful meaning for only a select few people high up inside the American intelligence establishment.
The box, and the dangerous message it contains, triggers a global search for a possible mole within the upper echelons of the CIA itself, a pursuit that takes Dalton from Venice to Santorini to Istanbul, where he collides with a shadowy group of spies determined to prevent the discovery of a plot that could paralyze America's most critical intelligence operations around the world.Through airborne firefights above the Sea of Marmora, a harrowing sea chase up the Straits of the Bosphorus, and then halfway across the globe to a violent confrontation in the mangrove swamps of Florida's Emerald Coast, Dalton and his associate - the half-American, half-English aristocrat Mandy Pownall - risk their lives and possibly their sanity in a desperate hunt for the architects of a cunningly deceptive espionage offensive mounted by one of America's most subtle and ancient enemies.
Intelligent, sophisticated, and filled with pulsing suspense, The Venetian Judgment is a brilliant thriller from a master craftsman.

    Disappointed
Compared to Stone's first 2 novels, this one is a dud. The plot was weak and I found it very confusing. The most entertaining (in my opinion) support characters from the first 2 books are absent. Porter Naumann only appears once and has no impact on the story. Brancati does not appear at all. The reader, Jason Culp, does not measure up to Firdous Bamji or Erik Davies. If Stone writes a fourth Micah Dalton novel, I hope it is better than this one!
Rats will eat anything....even each other!
Whew, I need a couple of cigarettes after this one, it was that good. I've read/listened to all of the books in the Micah Dalton series so far, and I must say that this one is the best to date. Not necessarily based on the content, but David Stone really put his foot in the structure of this one. The storyline, the character development, or rather, the way he opens up your knowledge of the relationships between all of the main characters is nothing short of sheer artistry and a measured, but technical skill.
Most noteworthy however, is the way the author lets you into the worlds of these fictional characters who most likely exist in some form or another in the real world. He takes you into their psyche, breaking down the routes and pathways of their criminal synapses.
There is a reason why very few people like wild rats, which most of the characters on the other side of Micah Dalton's mission seemed to be based on: feral, infectious creatures of instinct rather than intellect.
The narrator performs the characters rather nicely, especially Mandy, and Porter. Jason Culp sounds very authentic through various eastern hemisphere accents and dialects.
An excellent listen that builds on the legend that is Micah Dalton.

    Critic Reviews:
"Sansom adroitly draws the disparate strands of his ambitious saga together. His non-pareil evocations of time and place anchor his characters with satisfying precision" (Independent)
"Few authors have the ability, or capacity for research, which allows them to capture the mood and atmosphere of a period in history, so when one does, and does it as well as CJ Sansom in Winter in Madrid, then they deserve not only praise but success." (Tony Galvin, Dublin Evening Herald)

    A riveting story excellently narrated
I put off this book for a while, fearing a boring "costume drama". But this is anything but. It is the story of 3 men who went to public school in England together, and who meet in Spain during WWII in varying circumstances. The book jumps between various time periods (which can sometimes be confusing -- I wish the narrator had more clearly separated these sections) but which gives a fascinating insight into the characters. It is a spy story, a love story and a war story. Finally, the narration here is simply the best I have heard. By subtely altering his voice the narrator makes the characters come alive in the listener's mind without overdoing it. Pace is perfect, and the narration becomes "transparent" as you become afixed to the story.
Good story - perhaps too abridged
A well written and narrated novel set around the Spanish Civil war. It explains a little of the history and atmosphere at the time in the natural flow of the story.
Nicely narrated and an easy listen it is perhaps too harshly abridged when compared with Dominion by the same author on Audible that was much better as unabridged.
Interesting historical context - Spanish Civil War
Great spy story in the Le Carre / Greene tradition but with a very interesting setting around the time of the Spanish Civil War, giving some insight into the suffering of the Spanish people after several years of war and with threats from many quarters with people determing their allegiances to the various factions fighting within the country and with ambiguity as to who's on whose side and where the threats are coming from. Interesting characters and good pace - I found this to be a compelling listen.
The narration is so sombre I've had to give up. I'm sorry to say that the downcast narration ruins the story.

    Excellent spy tale
I couldn't stop listening to this book. High tension, intriguing locales (Venice, Cortona and the desert Southwest) and interesting characters make this recording zip along at breakneck speed. If you like action thrillers like 24, you will like this book.
    must be a pen name
I have listend to many spy, action and koontz type books. This one has many elements of koontz and I am sure it is written by a Flynn or other similar. Not too hard to keep up with and very good overall listen.
    Top of his Game
David Stone has a winner with his debut novel The Echelon Vendetta. Introducing a new kind of hero/villian/company man, Stone creates a likable, complex character in Micah Dalton. With chapters from Italy to New Mexico, Stone does well in defining a CIA we all know exists. From high tech gadgetry, to Native American folklore, Stone weaves a story of international intrigue and suspense that will keep you guessing and second guessing his storyline. While some parts are admittedly gruesome, I found the manner of writing refreshing and new in a world lacking since the death of Ludlum. Stone is definitely a writer for the new age, and will not disapoint those of us who tire of the same old "espionage novel" wrapped in different places and characters. Be prepared to be impressed. Looking forward to Stone's follow up ....
ok, but leaves a lot to be desired
I agree with the previous reviewer who compared the writing style to that of a 7th grader. I wouldn't go that far, but I agree the writing style is a bit immature. Full of tired cliches and infantile sayings (aw, don't go all 'Yoda' on me now...").
It was a bit hard to take the story seriously.
What made it worse is the narrator. The narrator also sounds immature, like an 18 year old surfer dude.
But I really liked the plot and storyline, I just wish the dialog was a bit more mature, and read by a better narrator.
    Not A Fan
The book dragged a bit. As mentioned before, far too many metaphors - actually reminded me of Koontz, whom I'm not a fan of. Such a writing style is amateurish to me and I found myself drifting away from the book as a result. Certain elements of the story were not believable, and other elements materialized out of nowhere, with absolutely no background to explain them. The ending frankly left me scratching my head; it really made little sense and seemed a weak attempt to justify the plot.
The narrator handled certain characters well, but definitely not the main one - Dalton.

How to slow down a fast moving thriller
How to slow down a fast moving thriller - get kindle to transcribe it. The total absence of indications of moves to new situations with different characters who Seymour doesn't usually mention until well into the para, spoils the thing completely. If it was possible, I'd award zero marks - not for the story but for the awful presentation. Also, if it were possible, I'd demand my money back.
Kindle presentation very rarely enhances a book in my experience but the least they could do is not to spoil it.
    More Please
There is not a book that I have read that Gerald Seymour has written that I would not have given five stars to. His characters are so well defined that you actually feel as though you know them personally. His stories are riveting and move at lightening speed. The only criticism is that I wish there were many more that I could get here in the US. Best writer today in his genre.
    Finally a real plot
a twisted plot, a bit of history, the occasional British anti-Teutonic comments, the wry judgments on arrivistes in the espionage world who would do anything to advance their careers, an ending I really couldn't see coming, a book that is not a door stopper with just enough realistic details to make it believable...What a great reading ride.
Please, Amazon, put more books of Gerald Seymour on Kindle.
    Disappointed
I was disappointed to find that this is a re-release of "The Waiting Time" which I already have. It's unfortunate that there appears to be no reference available that will identify these re-releases. In my opinion the seller has an obligation to make it clear that it is a re-release.
    Disinterring the past
Note: This book is also published under the title THE WAITING TIME.
When revisiting past crimes, be careful what you wish for.
In 1988, the British Army Intelligence Unit in West Berlin, in an unauthorized operation, recruits a young East Berliner, Hans Becker. The go-between is a 22-year old I Corps junior stenographer, Corporal Tracy Barnes, who becomes Becker's lover. Becker is sent by his controller to East Germany's Baltic coast to glean information from radar base signals. There, Hans is captured and brutally murdered by Stasi Counter Espionage Captain Dieter Krause. Barnes suspects Krause's guilt, but can't prove it. And Hans remains the first and only man that Tracy has ever slept with.
Now, it's a decade later. The Berlin Wall is rubble, Germany is re-united, and Dieter Krause is the new darling of the German intelligence service, the BfV, because of the information he can provide on an old friend, Russian Army Colonel Pyotr Rykov, who's the influential personal assistant to the Russian Defense Minister. The Germans are showing Krause off, first to the Brits, then the Yanks. However, during a visit to the I Corps base in Ashford, Kent, Dieter is recognized by Barnes, who physically attacks him.
