Officially designated the Joint Services Special Demands Project, "the Team" is a unique unit with an almost unlimited budget, authorized to acquire vital intelligence and take immediate action, with the field officer calling the shots.
A quantity of radioactive waste being shipped across the former Soviet Union has gone missing. In the wrong hands the stolen material could be used to create a "dirty bomb" capable of killing thousands and rendering any American city uninhabitable for centuries. The clock is ticking, though the Team doesn't know it yet. Their unseen enemy has already chosen a target, the island paradise of Honolulu.
Larry Bond's First Team is a fast-paced thriller by one of America's masters of international suspense.

    Entertaining, plausible techno-thriller
Since first helping co-author Red Storm Rising with Tom Clancy, Larry Bond has demonstrated a repeated knack for telling a great written yarn in the military, techno-thriller genre. I found this particular read very consumable, the characters likeable and three-dimensional, and the plot, a race to save the United States from having a "dirty bomb" detonated as the next terrorist act, thrilling and entertaining. The action spans the former Soviet Union, Chechnya, the Middle East, and the United States, and never really lets up from the initial pages. A great read and, assumably, a good listening experience. If you like Tom Clancy's older titles, you'll likely love Larry Bond's newest work.
    Hard to follow
I don't know if it's the narrator or the book itself, but I've found this book very hard to follow. The characters blend together and the story locations seem to pop up at will. This was my free book for joining Audible and it was worth every penny.

A Challenge and it's worth it!
This is my first Robert Littell book and I must admit it was a little confusing at first. However once I got into it this story kept me guessing right up to the very last sentences. Full of twists and turns and very plausible American "foreign policy". It made me think and taught me a little about the American Revolution to boot!
It was narrated by Scott Brick who is one of my favorites and he made the story a pleasure to listen to. Not everyone will agree but you should all judge for yourselves....it is worth your time to do so.
    Worth every penny
I will admit it started off a bit slow, but once you hang in there it all comes together. By the time you reach the end you will be sitting on the edge of your seat. Scott Brick is a fantastic narrator.
    Started off very slow
I have to admit that after reading "The Company" this publication lacked substance.
The dialog in this work was sooo much at the beginning that I found myself wondering "Why are they talking so much, where is the action."
This would be better if there was more ACTION less Dialog.
    Save your time and money
Robert Littel may have some talent, but it wasn't apparent to me in this novel. The plot was ludicrous, many of the characters are so crudely drawn they are more like caricatures, and the tie to the past was a gimmick.
    Not very good
I had high hopes for this book after LOVING The Company. This one isn't even in the same league. It's disjointed, the characters are completely incompetent and the "surprise" in the end doesn't hold up. Overall, while not a complete waste of time, I'd pass on this one.

    Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Espionage
    Publisher's Summary:
In Steelton, as struggling city on the cusp of an economic turnaround, two prominent men are found dead. One is Tommy Fielding, a senior officer of the company building a new baseball stadium, the city's hope for the future. The other is Jack Novak, the local drug dealers' attorney. Fielding's death with a prostitute, from an overdose of heroin, seems accidental; Novak is apparently the victim of a ritual murder. But in each case the character of the dead man seems contradicted by the particulars of his death. Coincidence or connection?
The question falls to Assistant County Prosecutor Stella Marz. A driven woman, she is called the Dark Lady by defense lawyers for her relentless, sometimes ruthless, style: in seven years only one case has gotten away from her, and only because the defendant took his own life. Making her way through a maze of corruption, deceit, and greed, trusting no one, Stella comes to believe that the search for the truth involves the bleak history of Steelton itself - a history that now endangers her future, and perhaps her life. Dark Lady is Richard North Patterson's signature work.

    What a Yawner!
I'm half-way through this thing, hoping it will speed up, somehow turn a corner, and become more interesting. It's just not happening. Think I'll move on to another title. This one's just not making it.
My advice - don't waste your money.
    Read like a movie script
very predictable and not particularly interesting drama
    Disappointing
I have been a fan of the author for quite some time and have really enjoyed books by him that I have previously read and/or to which I have listened. However, I found this one to be severely disappointing, in that not much really happens and there were too many characters, many of whom were never really expanded upon and the characters who were sufficiently developed, never really became either likeable or interesting. The premise of the book evolved completely around political machinations, strategies and subterfuge, 99% of which escaped me completely; it was very difficult to follow.
    Very dark
Not one of of this author's best.
    All talk, no action
I am a mystery fan, and love long complex English myteries like those by PD James. With this in mind, I am struggling to finish this book, and I am 30 minutes from the end of a 14 hour LONNGGG book. It is 14 hours of conversations, and without action, it gets tedious. Like everyone else I kept wondering what it was leading up to, waiting for the action packed surprise ending. Still waiting, and wading through the diolog. I cannot recommend it.

By the close of the 20th century, China had gathered secret information concerning United States military surveillance and guided-missile technology. Now, in 2005, the technology is in production in China's new breed of submarine-based, long-range missiles. The dragon has stirred. Admiral Arnold Morgan, the President's National Security Adviser, cannot sit back and wait for China to perfect their new ballistic weapon. Instead, he dispatches the most lethal hunter-killer submarine in the fleet, U.S.S. Seawolf, deep into the China Sea. Seawolf eludes the Chinese until a catastrophic accident suddenly puts the U.S. submarine at their mercy. The crew vanishes, plainly captive. At the risk of starting World War III, Admiral Morgan orders in the elite Navy SEALs to rescue the Americans at all cost. Under cover of darkness, the SEALs move into the forbidden waters of South China Sea. Their orders are brutal: whatever it takes. Failure, unthinkable.

A fantastic story that could happen in real life
Loved the book. It held my attention from start to finish. I would recommend it to anyone who likes military thrillers.
    Terrible
What would have made U.S.S. Seawolf better?
    Different narrator.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Not a bad twist. Helped make an otherwise awful story more paletable.
Would you be willing to try another one of David McCallums performances?
With the right story (British spy novel), yes.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
    Disappointment.
    Any additional comments?
When I once served in submarines movies were the mainstay of entertainment. Often times the movies brought aboard were the leftovers not selected by other deployed boats. But once started you had to suffer through the really awful ones lest you be ridiculed as a "non hacker." Catcalls during these flick ofter heard were "punch my hacker card!" Another favorite was "this is a three fingered gager." I offer this background to explain why I finished this book. I had to get my hacker card punched once again. The most obvious flaw was David McCullum attempting to mould his British accent into Chineese, or that of a cigar smoking American admiral. It didn't work. In fact, it didn't work so badly that it became my quest to suffer through to the end. I like David as an actor and enjoy his skills but he didn't fit this at all. The story itself was OK, not great, not very authentic, but OK....assuming that you can suspend belief easily. Anyway, this is just terrible and I was very disappointed. Still, it has been a long time since I suffered a 3 fingered gager and got my hacker card punched. So, from that standpoint, I'm glad I finished it. To those of you who quit half way through, you are just a bunch on non hackers.
    Don't waste your money
I found the plot confusing, and essentially no character development. I tried to get through it twice, but turned it off both times. Mr. Robinson is not the next Tom Clancy.
Have to listen to this book!!!I
I couldn't listen to this book fast enough I enjoyed it from start to finish a must-listen!
    Not very plausible
This story does not have very much to it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Look in the mirror: You're nobody anybody knows. You know pursuing the truth will get you killed. But you refuse just to fade away. So you're designated an enemy of the largest secret national security apparatus in America's history. Good guys or bad guys, it doesn't matter: All assassins' guns are aimed at you. And you run for your life, branded with the code name you made iconic: Condor.
Everyone you care about is pulled into the gunsights. The CIA star young enough to be your daughter - she might shoot you or save you. The savvy political aide who lets love trump the law. The lonely woman your romantic dreams make a fugitive. The Middle Eastern child warrior you mentored into a master spy.
Last Days of the Condor is the bullet-paced, ticking-clock saga of America on the edge of our most startling spy-world revolution since 9/11. Set in the savage streets and Kafkaesque corridors of Washington, DC, shot through with sex and suspense, with secret-agent tradecraft and full-speed action, with hunters and the hunted, Last Days of the Condor is a breakneck saga of America's secrets from muckraking investigative reporter and author James Grady.
    Members Reviews:
    Excitement barely outweighs Bordeom
While not nearly as interesting as the original book in the series, "Last Days of the Condor" is an intermix of quick-paced action scenes with long and slow sections of presumably character development. Grady attempts to provide philosophical and psychological into what happens to a much like Condor, but largely fails at generating any real insight. The ending is both a disappointment and a cop-out.
    Thoughtful and Suspenseful
This is the book fans of James Grady have been waiting for. The action is well-paced and the plot is appropriately complex. Some readers will not like Grady's writing style and certainly disapprove of how he writes dialogue, but it greatly appeals to me. No words are waisted and every action seems to have a consequence. This is an outstanding effort.
    Not To Be Missed.
Fun and excellent read. Grady is superb again.
Put your mind in places it has never been before then see where you go
While the story isn't easy to follow given the dialogue that takes place in the character's heads while their minds wander and rediscover portions of the past, it is nonetheless very intriguing, well worth the wadding through.
    welcome back Condor
It was great seeing the Condor back in action; have read all the Condor books and enjoyed them immensely. The all too human an frail master spy works his way out of his clouded mind and soul to find where he belongs.

A high rate of death by falling over banisters.
I enjoyed the first 3/4 a lot more than the last 1/4. Great character portrayal of Paul Chevasso. The "Romance" seemed to thankfully be just an afterthought. A lot of surprises for which I was quite unprepared. The ending was a tad abrupt, leaving one with the "is that all there is?" feeling. At times I would jerk alert and wonder "what happened to get me to this part?". Then I would think perhaps I should review what I had daydreamed through. But then I would decide "Naaah". An okay fast read, but not one of his better books.
    Good Spy Novel
I found this to be a pretty good book. Paul Chavasse is down on his confidence following a botched assignment. He meets a Chinese martial arts master who works with him to steady his nerves, finesse his fighting skills, and improve his confidence. When he passes a test his bosses set up for him, he is given an assignment to stop Russians from stealing Britain's newest missile. Really good story, remindful of a spy novel.
Jack Higgins, if you don't know Jack, you don't know what you're missing
You can literally read Jack Higgins and there is enough material to keep you engaged and busy for years. I am hooked and I know why everyone has been since the 1970's. What a true gem this author is and I'm waiting for the next book to be be released. In the meantime, I'm reading his other series on his other characters and it's addicting pleasure for the eyes, mind and soul. Midnight Never Comes is a bit misleading... as I am reading til the wee hours past midnight as I cannot put the book down. Great book and if you don't know Jack--you need to.
Hollywood needs to make his books into movies and it's been far, far too long.
    Higgins is the Master!
Jack Higgins is my favorite author and MIDNIGHT NEVER COMES didn't disappoint!
This book and 'On Dangerous Ground' (part of the Sean Dillion series) are almost exactly the same.
When I started reading this book it seemed very familiar. It turns out that a large part of the book is an exact copy of the book 'On Dangerous Ground'. This book is part of the Sean Dillion series. Jack Higgins didn't even change the name of the characters. I was highly disappointed that Jack copied from another book he had written. Even the mail plot was very similar to the other book.

    Publisher's Summary:
The brilliant new Micah Dalton thriller from the New York Times best-selling author.
In Vienna for a top-secret meeting with ex-Mossad agent Issadore Galan, Micah Dalton senses that something is very wrong on the streets of the Ring District. Dalton's aggressive response to enemy surveillance makes him the target of a complex plot with the potential to shatter America's strategic alliances with the rest of the civilized world. Planned by an unknown foreign power and executed by a scarred Serbian killer known only as Smoke, the conspiracy pits Dalton against an ultrasecret U.S. agency and a cadre of trained KGB killers.
In a blistering trajectory of events that takes him from Venice to the Balkans and the barren shoreline of North Africa, Dalton pushes himself to the edge of sanity in a desperate attempt to save his honor-and his life.
    Members Reviews:
    Stone delivers another excellent adventure
Having read or listened to all of his previous books, I was pleased to see David Stone return Micah Dalton in The Skorpion Directive. The author features interesting, mostly believable characters in fast moving yet well-put-together plots. The protagonist, Micah Dalton, and his allies confront great bad guys in conflicts that have current context. The reader, Jason Culp, adds to the experience with a great range of voices and accents. I believe Audible should better promote this writer. If you like espionage novels and audio books, I highly recommend Skorpion Directive.
    'Delusions of Adequacy'
First, I think that I should tell you why you might o want to purchase "The Skorpion Directive," as this novel will not suit everyone. Don't buy this audiobook if you have not yet listened its Micah Dalton series predecessors -- starting with "The Echelon Vendetta" (2007) -- because you will miss out on the continuity and some of the allusions. Secondly, don't buy this audiobook if you object to right-wing proselytizing. Yes, David Stone has a right-of-center political stance ... but, then, so do Tom Clancy, Patrick Robinson, Stephen Hunter, and most of the other Military Thriller writers. I consider myself to have pretty liberal sensibilities -- and I am sticking to them! -- but I would regret missing out on these writers who, despite their right-wing stances, offer us some pretty exciting stories. Stone, in particular, is not only a good story-teller, but also a surprisingly good writer. Some of his descriptions qualify as poetry ... but he does proselytize:
"Here, at the end of my life, I've come to realize that the only reliable law is the law of unintended consequences. This new administration [referring to the Obama administration], for the most part, is neither stupid nor blindly partisan ... although some of the younger staffers at the White House seem to think it clever to act like junkyard dogs, as if political combat were the same as actual combat. But, then, when the young Turks in any new government aren't prating to their elders, they're preening in their shaving mirrors. They all share the same delusions of adequacy. The previous administration persuaded itself that it had the power to impose a kind of Junior-League Republicanism on murderous tribal theocracies.

    The Constant Gardener
I found this book hard to follow on audio. I don't know if it seemed random since it was an abridged version, or not, but I constantly felt like I was missing something.
    good topical modern day fiction
LeCarre gets every voice right when he reads his book. A political/activist/travelog thriller.
    Ever the master,
Mr le Carre continues to be the high watermark of espionage/spy drama. His narration adds a depth and texture to his characters that only the author could.
    A great story, well read
John LeCarre writes great characters and it is a real treat to hear him give distinct voices to each of them. This story grabs you right from the start and doesn't let up until it ends. Highly recommended!
Good but not great Le Carre
A good yarn - comparable to The Russia House. Le Carre paints an intriguing picture of Africa and of the abuse of the third world by the west and by the big pharmacutical companies. I found the ending a tad disappointing.
