    terrific new action heroine
Review originally published at Amazon.com and refers to the written copy. I then bought all three of the series when they came out at Audible.com.
    I LOVE this series.
Wow. Some of you reviewers are really incredibly snotty, aren't you? OK, there are some spelling errors. Take a grammar pill, people! Much like Alex says, Reading is a habit of mine, not a hobby, but a habit. It seems I just can't get enough. I will read anything. Alex is up to doing anything too anything from rappelling down a hill to swimming several miles in clothing and boots. You GO, Alexis!!!
Yes, Alexis comes from a privileged and yet unconventional background, but she doesn't seem all that spoiled to me. She is, admittedly, a bit young for her age, and somewhat naïve, and that is somewhat irritating to me, but that smooths out in the future books. Hey, she is 24, comes from an upper class background and has never really had much bad happen to her. She has to learn and grow, just like any young person. She is smart, stylish, and passionate about everything she does. Well, not everything. I mean, who really wants to be a data-entry clerk if they have half a brain? Oy. As BigAl says in his review, Alex . . . has a passion to experience life that most of us lack.
Some of you are pretty bent out of shape that Alex came from a privileged background, but she certainly isn't cut any slack when she starts out in her new venture as a member of a private military organization as it's lone female partner. And I can't see you whining and crying about her kicking butt and taking names, meeting and exceeding the new and tremendously difficult requirements of her new job if she was one of those with a penis. You would be talking about how hot the jock is. As for not really knowing what her father does for a living, other than being in the military --- anyone who knows, or is related to, certain military members knows full well that they are never allowed to know what their spouse/brother/son/daughter/wife is doing, where they are going, or when they will be back. Or, yes, what is is they really are responsible for. So get over it.
And speaking of penises come ON people!!! Not every single book on the planet has to devolve into getting naked and getting it on. It is like you expect every book written to be Oh, I meet the guy. Oh, I hump the guy. Oh, my life is complete! Yes, Alex is quite taken by White, and when she realizes who he is, the guy she fell for at age 12, well, that explains that. And Colin is her friend. Yes, she is possessive of him, but who hasn't been possessive of their best (and mostly only) childhood friend? And Black is the kind of person I would love to have for a mentor if I am her.

    Brilliant reading by Tenant
I coudn't hear enough of D. Tenant. absolutely loved listening to his narration.
    Story ... good enough.
    Loved it
Listened to this with the family on the dread Christmas journey, which takes four hours. They asked for it to be put on as soon as we started the journey home - praise indeed! David Tennant really brings the book to life with an astonishing array of accents, and Ian Fleming's attention to detail when describing cars, action or people was excellent. Almost thought I was in France in a white Lancia instead of rain-sodden Britain in a Volvo (sigh...)
    O.H.M.S.S.
Really enjoyed this book and loved David Tennant as the narrator. Surprised me how close the film stayed to the book (the book is still better though). A nice amount of detail which I always listen for and enjoy - Tracy's Lancia sports car being equipped with De Dion rear suspension while Bonds Bentley makes do with a fixed rear axle ; the description of the food and meals - for example. It starts as a typical Bond adventure but with subtle twists starts to change leading to the very untypical Bond ending.
    Well worth listening to. Enjoy.
If you love Bond you will love this.
David Tennant narrates this book so well. When you hear this audio book you will realise just how good the original stories are.
    Best Bond book to date
The best Bond book to date for me. Well read too. I'll go back and watch the film again.

    Members Reviews:
    Excellent audiobook
Great reading of a great book. Mr Branagh does a great job of narrating the story and playing every one's favourite secret agent James Bond. A word of warning to fans of the movies that aren't familiar with the books - the character is harsher with less humour and few wisecracks.... Also the story in this book is very different to the movie - no nick nack or Thailand but a very good story none the less! Very well recommended!!!!
    Gritty James Bond
The book has little in common with the film except a man with a golden gun. This version takes place almost entirely in 1 hotel. Leaving only for a thrilling finale on a train. Kenneth Branagh reads the story well as Bond moves from one gruesome killing to the next. Felix Lighter turns up to represent the CIA and takes a bullet for the team.
    Short but enjoyable
I listened to this one along with a few other while on Holiday in Nice. In the hottest part of the day when only mad dogs and Englishmen venture out (I am the latter) I filled my time with these books and it was brilliant.
The vivid story telling from Fleming in the man with the Golden Gun invites you in to spectate on a simple but pleasing tale, although hearing about Bond's lifestyle makes me want to start smoking again and drink Champaign for breakfast.
This book is one of the shorter ones in the series but doesn't suffer from it.

    You only live twice.
The only Bond book that I have not enjoyed up to now. It has a slow pace compared to all the others and this may have somethingvto do with it following on from the death of Bonds wife. Theres plenty going on but the action all comes very late on. Once again, nothing at all like the film. A must from the point of view of working through the series but not the
    best by a long chalk.
    Last book
This book was very well read by Martin, I felt it took a very long time ,up 12 chapters before the story really began follow just like the old James Bond books.
Not your average, exciting, Bond novel.
Very slow and steady. Hard to stick with listening it through. Can now understand why the film only uses a few characters and location.
Great listen, well presented and very different from the film
I've been working my way through the James Bond audiobooks over the last few months and I was not expecting this story to have anything original to grab my attention. I was pleasantly surprised to find it contained a great many new ideas, was as beautiful as the earlier books and seemed rather less racist to boot. It's still not politically correct but it is certainly less unkind than the previous books.
I enjoyed listening. The action takes a little time to bring but the build up is interesting and Bond's exploration of and immersion in Japanese culture is quite deep and thoughtful. There's nothing worth skipping over and I highly recommend this book.
The last of the good Bond books
What did you like most about You Only Live Twice (with Interview)?
The sympathy shown towards Bond by his superiors. The positive depiction of Japanese culture, especially in contrast with our own.

great performance but not a Fleming classic
very dull story with no real bond. quite disappointed. reading was great from r pike
not where you want to start
not where you would start if you want to begin reading the Bond books, but an interesting twist in the formula as it's written from the perspective of a woman involved in a Bond caper
Bond, but not as you know it!
What an interesting book! A really fascinating novel with how its written. I had to go back and check the title on a couple of occasions as I thought I had downloaded the wrong thing. I won't spoil it by letting on what impressed me about this book, I'll let you listen and make your own mind up. It impressed me and I highly recommend it. It is certainly a twist on the Bond theme.
Really enjoyed Ms Pike's narration, also unexpected and different.
    Worth its 5 stars.
    I've never read a 'Mills&Boon' until now...
the plot is strong, but centres on the 'Bond girl' rather than Bond him-self, who doesn't show up until very near the end, for a tense stand-off and spectacular climax.
Rosamund Pike is a strong and fitting narrator for this 007 tale.
    Very different
If you could sum up The Spy Who Loved Me (with Interview) in three words, what would they be?
    Not the film.
What did you like best about this story?
I like the fact that it is so unlike all the other James Bond novels and short stories (except for Quantum of Solace).

    Publisher's Summary:
Could Martin Talbot's elderly, Alzheimer-stricken mother, Judy, really have been the Black Stiletto? When Martin discovers several volumes of her diaries hidden by his mother, he is stunned beyond all imagination. His mother, the underground heroine of yesteryear? The famed, still unidentified woman who battled Communist spies, took on the Mafia, and preyed on common crooks? The woman who exacted punishment on evildoers without mercy?
But it is all described, in great detail, in the diaries. What caused her to begin her quest for justice. Her decision to act outside the law. Her feats as the famed and feared vigilante. How her reputation exploded. In short, how it all played out.
Could it be true? Talbot is filled with doubt and disbelief. But the reappearance of one of the Stiletto's old enemies with a thirst for merciless revenge makes the story more than real, and could imperil the life of not only the Stiletto, but her son and granddaughter as well.

    Easy Listening
Enjoyed the story, good narration and interesting plot. I would consider this a young adult novel. I received this audiobook free in exchange for an honest review.
Watch out for the Black Stiletto!
Where does The Black Stiletto rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I enjoyed it immensely and would recommend it to any one who likes a good action story with a strong female heroine.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked Judy Cooper and seeing her develop as the Black Stiletto. It was satisfying to see her get revenge on men who had wronged her.
    Which scene was your favorite?
The Black Stiletto getting naked in her effort to combat Communism.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The revenge scene with her stepfather was very satisfying.
    Any additional comments?
This story was truly enhanced by being narrated by three different readers. I don't think my experience would have been so enjoyable on the printed page. Arielle DeLisle gave Judy Cooper's voice energy and authenticity. I would like to hear more of her and I'm looking to forward to the next in the series. Chris Patton did a good job with the voice of Martin but for some reason his part wasn't edited as well as the rest. There was a couple of instances of a repeated line - sort of like a stutter. Michael Ray Davis was my favorite of all the voices. His performance of Roberto Renelli, a gangster who has been in prison for over 50 years, was flawless and totally believable. He truly sounded like a 72-year-old, broken down gangster. I'm adding him to my list of favorite narrators.
Superman, wonder woman and now The Black Stiletto
Raymond Benson came up with an interesting idea. I remember years and years ago when in training, working with some Alzheimer patient wondering what their life had been like and what secret were also lost to the disease. Benson has Martin Talbot's mother Judy Cooper Talbot in a facility for Alzheimer, he is asked to see his Mother's attorney. The attorney gives him a box and letter and said his Mother had instructed him to give this to Martin when she dies or is incapacitated. He finds a diagram to the house marking a secret room. In it he finds a costume and diaries, weapons.

Even his scenario is chillingly plausible, given the fluid parameters of scientific ethics in a technological and political climate in which dollars must show immediate results." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    One of Mayer's best
Have come to appreciate Mr. Mayer's stories, but this one struck a cord, as it is intriguing enough and one can't help but wonder, as scientists work more with DNA and genetic engineering, if something like this could not be happening somewhere. Therefore, the premise might be plausible. Personally, I was glad that Holly was the ultimate hero.
A tad bit predictable, but well done!
Another in the successful Green Berets series , fans of the series will not be disappointed , well-written and well-read the book is a great addition to the story and suffers only slightly from it's now 20 year old date.
Third time is more of a charm
This third installment in the green beret series is a thrilling ride from start to finish. Blending a bit of horror into the mix it keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting to see what happens next.
