    Publisher's Summary:
A lone man, Peanut, escapes a labour camp in the dead of night, fleeing across the winter desert of northwest China. Two decades earlier, he was a spy for the British; now Peanut must disappear on Beijing's surveillance-blanketed streets. Desperate and ruthless, he reaches out to his one-time MI6 paymasters via crusading journalist Philip Mangan, offering military secrets in return for extraction. But the secrets prove more valuable than Peanut or Mangan could ever have known... and not only to the British.
Uncover a world of international secrets in the utterly authentic, unbearably tense opening novel in a landmark thriller trilogy by BBC Foreign Correspondent Adam Brookes.
    Critic Reviews:
"Night Heron is a fascinating portrait of the dangerous complexities of spying in a restricted country, the competing agendas driving international intelligence, and China's startlingly varied social realities. A must-read for fans of espionage and smart global fiction in general." (Booklist)
"Brookes, a correspondent for BBC News in Washington, D.C., who was formerly based in China, takes readers deep inside the culture and daily routines of that country in his outstanding fiction debut.... Good chase scenes and tense dialogue, coupled with a convincing picture of what actually happens in the corridors of power, make Brookes a thriller writer to watch." (Publishers Weekly)
"Fans of the international espionage genre will inhale this fast tale in a few suspenseful breaths. Brookes uses multiple narrators - the spy, the engineer, the journalist, the agent, the boss-whose conflicting alliances tell the real story." (Library Journal)
"The pace is frenetic and Brookes does a wonderful job with both the high-tech world of cyber intelligence and survival on Beijing's gritty, smog-smothered streets. Highly recommended." (The Bookseller)
"Engrossing and compelling" (LA Review of Books)
"Brookes, a one-time China correspondent for the BBC, knows this turf exceedingly well and translates that knowledge into a novel that is as strikingly different as it is thrilling . . . One of the best and most compulsively readable spy-fiction debuts in years" (Kirkus)

    Failed to sustain my interest
What did you like best about Night Heron? What did you like least?
There were some enthralling set-pieces (the initial escape being one of them) but by half-way through the book I still didn't care enough about any of the characters to want to find out what was going to happen next. I found all of the main characters in the story to be both non-sympathetic (not necessarily a problem by itself) and non-empathetic - I just never felt engaged in the story.
    Any additional comments?
Jason Isaacs does a good job of narration, the pace is just about right and characterisations as good as they could be given the source material. It's not a bad book, just not a terribly good one either. This was my first foray into post-Le-Carre contemporary spy fiction; I am hoping there are better, more exciting and more engaging examples yet to encounter.
A Spy Story With No Soul
The first three-quarter of the book was rather dull. I would have preferred the protagonists to possess more character depth and human emotions. As it is, I did not bond with any of the characters as I would normally have done with those in any good well-written books. With all due respect, I have no doubt Mr.

    Title: Sting of the Drone
    Author: Richard A. Clarke
    Narrator: Ari Fliakos

Length: 8 hrs and 47 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-13-14

    Publisher's Summary:
In Washington, the Kill Committee gathers in the White House's Situation Room to pick the next targets for the United States drone program. At an airbase just outside Las Vegas, a team of pilots, military personnel and intelligence officers follow through on the committee's orders, finding the men who have been deemed a threat to national security and sentenced to death.
On the other side of the world, in the mountains where the drones hunt their prey, someone has decided to fight back. And not just against the unmanned planes that circle their skies, but against the Americans at home who control them.
Clarke not only remains an active and respected presence within the national security community but also appears regularly as an expert commentator for ABC and other media. His insider's expertise is on full display in Sting of the Drone, a breathtakingly realistic novel set within America's contentious drone program.

    Which part is fiction?
During the story I keep thinking which part is fiction?
While not every character get's it own personality this is a story that I've listened to from start to finish in one single session.
It makes clear that the world of conflict is much more complicated than at first sight visible. I can't wait to get to the next novel by mr. Clarke.
Interesting insight from an inside source
The part I enjoyed about this book was the unique insights which only someone who has been there can bring to this fictionalized account of the US Government's drone warfare campaign. As for the story, I would describe is as simple, straightforward, predictable, and just too conveniently wrapped up and decorated with a nice bow at the end. It's worth the read though just to learn more about how (with room for literary exaggeration) the real drone program works.
    technothriller on terror
great ideas and realistic scenareos. makes you hope that the bad guys dont read this. very interesting take on both sides of the war on terror. good to listen to.
A good yarn . . . and something of an education
Clarke has spun a story that moves right along and certainly kept me engaged. I knew precious little about drones at the outset. It proved to be an education about both the ethics and the mechanics of drone warfare. In addition, if one fifth of what is accomplished by the various hackers and electronic intruders is actually feasible, it is also a tad on the scary side.

    Redaktionelle Rezensionen:

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
What other book might you compare Breaking News to and why?
    fällt mir nichts dazu ein
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Oliver Stritzel and Hansi Jochmann ?
Die LEser sind gut wobei manchmal die versuchte weibliche Stimmlage der Dame etwas nervt. Weniger wäre mehr, aber allgemein nicht auszusetzen an den Lesern.
Do you think Breaking News needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Alles nur das nicht. Trennt die zwei Handlungsstränge, verkauft sei einzeln, das gibt immer noch je 500 Seiten. Bitte nicht noch mehr.
    Any additional comments?
34 hours are too long. Never again.

Lots of details for the "fans"
What did you love best about The Sum of All Fears?
I love the way Clancy always acknowledges his readers are intelligent enough to manage several "back" stories. He doesn't have to step you through the characters, they are so well written you don't need reminders or prompts. The Sum of All Fears is just such a story.. Clever, well proportioned and credible characters.
What other book might you compare The Sum of All Fears to and why?
Matthew Reilly gives the reader the same impression of deep research. and having done same wants to share every morsel with the reader. I feel I'm not just being entertained I am learning... Very satisfying experience
What does John MacDonald bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Nice to hear someone who can read without taking breathes and gasps midsentence (like Lou Diamond Philips) this destroys the story. I have sought out and listened to more McDonald and he is good.. Wish he could re-read all the ones Phillips has mutilated..
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
Ryan saves the world (again) .....
Almost as good as Patriot Games
As with a lot of Tom Clancy it takes a while to wind up and has some very slow portions but that's the price you pay for a well developed story. Well worth it.

    Double Agents and defections
What made the experience of listening to The Cardinal of the Kremlin the most enjoyable?
Tom Clancy's writing is well researched and the scope of the story is incredible especially with many twists and turns the story takes.
What did you like best about this story?
The double agent Cardinal. The character's bravery in the face of execution was a brilliant concept.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I really felt for Cardinal when he passed away shortly after his rescue and defection to the United States.
    A great counter-intelligence story
This is my first foray into a Tom Clancy novel. I love the films based on his books, but until now, never thought I had the patience to sit through the written work. This one is a great read in terms of characters and story.
The major story centres around Cardinal, a Soviet double agent working to sneak secrets out of Russia to the CIA. There is also a plot that sees the USA and the USSR racing to complete their versions of a laser defence system. There are a lot of characters in the book, but they are all fully fleshed out and realised. Surprisingly, Jack Ryan himself takes a backseat for much of the story. As the title suggests, the book focuses a lot on Cardinal, and luckily he is a very likable character.
Now to the narration. One of the reasons I was hesitant to listen to the audio versions was that I had heard that Michael Prichard's narration was flat and boring. It is to an extent, but it wasn't bad enough that I had to stop listening. He doesn't have any range as a actor for different characters and when he does try to do different voices, he seems to just give up after about one sentence. The book would definitely have been better with an actual voice actor, but it was tolerable.
    Fantastic book.
A gripping story from start to finish. You'll wish it never finishes.

    Unexpectedly Good
The story kept my interest. I listened while walking for exercise and it was great encouragement for me to keep walking since I wanted to know what happened next. Luke Daniels is an awesome narrator. He's good with accents and changing his voice so it's easy to know which character is speaking. He also speaks clearly so he's easy to understand. I'm not exactly sure what I expected as far as the story goes. Perhaps I was afraid it would be boring. But it turned out to be an intriguing audio book which I'm glad I listened to.
    For lovers of historical fiction
Good story, intriguing even though we know how it ends. Well read. Fiction and history woven well together.

    Publisher's Summary:
The master of suspense returns, with a fierce cutting-edge tale of international terrorism and personal heroism.
Jack Higgins has written some of the best suspense fiction of the past fifty years, wrote The San Diego Union-Tribune. And in The Death Trade, he does it again.
An eminent Iranian scientist has made a startling breakthrough in nuclear weapons research, but he cant stand the thought of his country owning the bomb. He would run if he could, but if he does, his family dies. He is desperate, he doesnt know what to do.
It is up to Sean Dillon and the rest of the small band known as the Prime Ministers private army to come up with a plan. Most particularly, it is up to their newest member, an intelligence captain and Afghan war hero named Sara Gideon, who thinks there just might be a way to bring it off.
But plans have a way of coming up against the unexpected. And as the operation spins out, from Paris and Syria to Iran and the Saudi Arabian desert, there is very much that is unexpected, indeed. And much blood that will be spilled.
Filled with event, driven by characters of complexity and passion, The Death Trade is a remarkable novel by the dean of intrigue novelists (St. Louis Post-Dispatch).

The Death Trade by Jack Higgins
The Death Trade by Jack Higgins is one more winner from the remarkable writer. To begin with, I am one of his best fans. I have read every book this man has written and I do mean every book. The Death Trade once again brings his favorite people, Gen. Ferguson, Sean (that crazy Irishman)Dillon, Sara Gideon, Major Roper, and others. Sean and Sara make an interesting duo when Sean plays the piano and Sara sings the ballads. They are a hit where ever they perform. But is this their true mission? No, it is not. There is a mysterious "Master" from al Qaeda who used the internet and cell phones to communicate with the al Qaeda followers all over Europe. Al Qaeda has secretly invaded some of the most closely guarded institutions not only in Europe but also in some of the Arab nations. Our hero's are off to Paris where they meet an Iranian Colonel, Declan Rashid, who is half Irish and half Arab. What is his part in the Paris meeting with various officials from various nations? Also present is a scientist, Simon Husseini, who has known Sara and her father since she was a little girl. They meet in Paris and discuss old times. Simon is doing some research for Iran that is top secret. He is also a top researcher in the medical field. This great book will keep you in suspense for many good reading hours. Language, graphics. Not recommended for the young reader. DP, Castro Valley, CA.
    Suspend Your Disbelief
Jack Higgins, in his 'The Death Trade', lives in a black-and-white world where all villains tend to come from the Middle East and all the good guys are from the West.
