Fifth and Sixth Grade Can Feel Like It'll Kill You

"Brothers, Braces, and Bullies" brought back a lot of memories of the turnaround time known as "The Fifth and Sixth Grade." The time when new braces and other new changes make many feel like they're on the edge of dorkdom. Awkwardness, being unsure, trying hard to be cool (and failing), keeping as quiet and as invisible as possible are all themes touched on within these pages.

Modern things like text messaging, clear braces, Facebook and more help put this into the "now," but the story feels timeless. The rumor mill just moves faster nowadays with our online lives.

Some of the adults/teachers are a little "dumb," and I really don't like that. But there is also a golden magical Fortune Teller (aka Cootie Catcher). So, this isn't a story fully based in reality.

The narrator does a very good job. Dialogue pops out and she even sings a bit of "Who Let the Dogs Out."

A fun story. A great narrator. An excellent listen.

I was listening to some other books by this narrator with my headphones on with my daughter and little niece harrassing me about getting to listen too. The other books were filled with murder and sex, so definitely a headphone listen with the 8 and 9 year old around, so I when I saw that the narrator also had this kids title I got it for us to listen to together. I thought we'd listen to a few chapters while cleaning up the kitchen and then save some for later, but when we were done cleaning about 20 minutes later they didn't want to turn it off (I think it was right around the time the Bull was introduced), so we kept going and ended up pretty much listening to it in one sitting, finishing it in the car as we drove my niece home. It was a cute story, very much like something they might watch on one of the kids' tv stations. There's a nice little lesson about friendship and judging people in there, too.

Imaginative and fun

Even adults who like sci-fi/fantasy will enjoy this story. It's an imaginative, original concept that you won't forget.

A good book for pre-teen to early teens

This is a good book for young people who are interested in fantasy/science fiction. The main characters are 12 yrs old and have magic powers and stuff. If you like all thaat jazz check it out.Part of the reason I like it might be that it takes place in my home town. Who knows?

Review of all three Bindi Babes Books

I read all three Bindi Babes books during a bored week this summer and thought they were generally good.

Things I liked:

1. The author obviously had an authentic knowledge of life in a mostly desi community in England. Because I am not from England, I had a pretty hard time in the beginning understanding some of the slang, how neighborhoods related to each other, and even that most of the anglicized names in the book were referring to other desi kids, but that is okay because the book does not apologize or over explain these things. You have to just figure it out as you go along.

2. The storylines were good for its young adult audience, although I would say that the it would be more for the 12-14 year old set, rather than the 15-18 year olds.

3. I liked how the last book of the trilogy ended with good closure, but leaving enough room that if she were to write another book, it would be okay.

Things that could have used some improvement:

1. Similar to another reviewer, I also had a little bit of a hard time, especially in the first book, figuring out the difference between the three main characters, or even basics about who was oldest, etc. By the third book, it was simple to differentiate in my head, but maybe setting a LITTLE more context would be good.

2. The book sometimes jumped from 'scene' to 'scene' without any warning (in the middle of a paragraph). I don't know if it is because the e-book formatting was poor or not, but in one example, the girls are at a store with an elderly person, and in the next sentence, the main character is waking up a few days later with an idea.

Specific things about each book:

Bindi Babes - not sure why the 'babes' are there, but nice enough story talking about what happens when an 'interfering Auntie' comes to stay with three sisters and their dad who are mourning the loss of their mom. I wish they developed Auntie's character more here, rather than just the girls' reaction to Auntie, but it was fine.

Bollywood Babes - my favorite book of the three. Cute storyline and really starts expanding the social circle/community the girls live in.

Bhangra Babes - A nice way to end the trilogy with general closure, and who doesn't love a wedding-- but, I do wish there were more descriptions of the wedding.

A cute, quick read in an authentic voice that I would recommend to anyone.

P.S. I was able to borrow this book electronically from my local library (through Overdrive) so you may want to try that before you buy.

An Enjoyable Listen

I checked this out from the library, and enjoyed listening to it. The narrator is very good at creating distinguishable voices, and it was interesting to listen to.

Great story for children, young adults, or even the grey haired crowd. A warning of the impulse to rush to war, told in Homeresue prose. Think Robert E. Howards' prose verbose? Conan overdone? Hear how wrong you are as Cabbage Eater and Troglodyte war. Great story, told very, very well!

Looking for a good mystery/ghost story? THE DREADFUL REVENGE OF ERNEST GALLEN will be a satisfying read.

Young Eugene "Gene" Richards feels a tightness in his chest. Then there is a strange sensation, like a motion wiggling in his center. What follows is the scariest thing - a voice begins to speak to Gene from somewhere inside.

Over the course of a few weeks, the strange feeling and the internal voice continue to visit Gene. The voice tells him a frightening tale. Gene learns that his beloved grandfather may have committed some unthinkable crime. According to the voice, back when Gene was very young, his grandfather and some other men in the small town of Magnolia got involved in a "get rich quick" scheme that ended in the lynching of a young man. It is beginning to appear that the voice haunting Gene's thoughts is the ghost of that young man looking for revenge.

Sensitive handling of death, loss, deafness

Our beloved Birman Eddie disappeared for 8 days, causing great emotional upheaval in our house. The boys (aged 6 & 8) and I were extremely upset. Luckily he "magically" reappeared.

This book is theoretically about a stray cat called "Ka", that appears and re-appears much to the distress of Toffa (aged 10) who spends much of the book searching for her. For anyone who has lost a cat, this book will resonate deeply. The descriptions of an empty, cold house and longing to spend every second of the day searching, really reflected what the family went through.

Of course there is more to it than that. Toffa's mother has recently died, and this gets mixed up with the loss of the cat. His father gets increasingly distrustful of Toffa's exploits, and then there is a new friendship with a deaf girl called Ellie. Ellie eventually decides to get cochlear implants to help her hear and (as my 6 yr old has a deaf child in his class) it was really interesting to hear how this friendship plays out.

It's not the easiest of listens, as it covers some really big emotional topics. It is however extremely exciting and thought provoking. This combined with the mention of animal sacrifice in Ancient Egypt (SPOILER ALERT Ka is rescued at the last minute, so no actual sacrifice but lots of suggestive bits for the nervously inclined) makes me suggest this is suitable for age 7 and over. Having said that, whilst some of the adult themes are missing my 6 yr old, he did ask our cat Eddie - when he came home late - if he had been out time traveling to the Temple of Bastet. Eddie just purred and said nothing.

Youth Storytelling Awards.

I use these books for prizes/awards for youth in my Youth Storytelling classes and events. The size and content is just perfect for the youth. The price is perfect when buying for many students.

Good value; an inexpensive and unusual gift for my niece.

Native American History is rooted in their legends.

That being said this book brings to life so many of them in so many different styles. It is a great book to use in classrooms if you are studing the cultures of Native Americans.

More child appropriate myths!

I am happy to have found this. It will be a great companion for the other Indian Myth books I purchased.
