    Title: Immigrant Kids
    Author: Russell Freedman
    Narrator: Brian Keeler
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 41 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 03-05-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 2 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Many people came to America in the early 1900s looking for jobs, opportunity, and freedom, and a lot of them were kids. But what happened to all these immigrant children after they passed inspection at New Yorks Ellis Island - that is, if they passed inspection? Life was not easy for immigrants. Large families lived in small, one-room tenement apartments with failing plumbing and few windows. Children had to go to school with kids from different countries and learn to read and write a new language. And many of the boys and girls were going to school at night, after working a 12-hour work day to help support their families. But these immigrants learned to persevere through all odds so they could make it in America. Newbery Medal winner Russell Freedman tells the immigrant story through the eyes of children. Brian Keelers clear narration will make difficult foreign and unfamiliar words easy to understand for listeners, allowing them to become immersed in the story.
    Critic Reviews:
Concise ... designed in ever way to catch and hold the readers interest. (

life as an Ellis Island immigrant child in tenements of NYC
    great authentic black/white pictures.
    A true teaching tool.
The pictures truly told the story. My 4th grade students were shocked by these images. Their lives are so different from children in the past. Also, the text was easy to read and interesting. My students had interesting conversations about the past. I recommend this book to all 4th grade classes.
    Five Stars
    interesting
    Fantastic Photos
The photos tell the story in this book: photos of immigrant children, roughly 1890-1910. Young readers looking at these photos will be able to make inferences about the children, their families, their lives. A whole period of history will come alive for them, in a way that mere words could never capture. Although Freedman divides the chapters into the passage over, home in the new world, school, work, and play, I felt there was nothing spectacular about the text. The text does not stay with me. The pictures do. Still, a very worthwhile book. Recommended!
    WONDERFUL
It is a wonderful book for explaining briefly and graphically the big adventure of emigration to America at the turn of the century.

    Good family listening
Our family, with children ages 2 to 12, likes to pass the time on long trips listening to audio books. Finding one suitable and interesting for everyone can be a challenge at times, but this story certainly worked for us. It is a celebration of the creative process, especially drama. Although the father is a magician, there is nothing "spooky" or evil or scary. The author makes it clear that his illusions are tricks requiring timing and practice. And although the title and synopsis on the cover stress the "mystery", it is much more about daily life and human relationships. It is refreshing to have the main character, a boy, come from a stable, loving home. SPOILER WARNING: a main character does die near the end, but it is handled very matter of factly. It did not worry my sensitive 5 year old.
It's important for an adult reading to a child to also like a book
My adult son: "Antonio S is a rather special book. We all like it and it really is something out of the ordinary."
... later comment: "We still have no idea where the 'Theodore Guzman' story is headed, which is unusual for a kids' book."
"We": my son is reading it aloud to his own son (10) and daughter (8.)

    Title: The Jazz Kid

Length: 5 hrs and 19 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 02-12-13
    Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Paulie Horvath is never going to be a good student like his brother, John, never going to follow his hardworking father into the plumbing trade, never going to ease his mother's mind by passing tests or cleaning up his room. But once he hears jazz by accident from the basement of a speakeasy, he knows exactly what he will do: learn that music and make it his life. Jazz is all around in gangland Chicago, but not so easy for a 12-year-old to find, especially when his father disapproves of it. Paulie has to lie, beg, and steal just to get time for lessons, time to practice, time to slip across town to see stars like King Oliver and Louis Armstrong.
Lies last only so long until they are found out, and a confrontation is coming. Will he choose home and family or sleazy dives with that wonderful music? To decide, Paulie has to face an even tougher question. What is jazz, after all?
Author James Lincoln Collier has played and studied jazz throughout his life. Here is a novel that shows us a great moment in the history of jazz, and points at issues that still trouble us today.

    Five Stars
    Good book.
    1920s Chicago jazz atmosphere
This YA novel is a well-written and engrossing look into the Chicago jazz scene of the late 1920s. 12-year-old Paulie (who today would probably be diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder) finds his calling in learning to play jazz cornet. But his father wants him to enter the plumbing business, and even with his mother's support, Paulie can't keep his grades up enough to get permission to pursue his music. Paulie eventually has to choose -- lose his music, or lose his family? Published in 1996, this YA novel is now, sadly, out of print.
    The Jazz Kid
This is a great book for kids and adults alike. I recently reread this book, and having just finished it and refreshed my memory I am reminded of the great writing, plot, and charcters in this book. The story tells of a time when gangsters ruled Chicago and owned nightclubs and practically conrtolled the musicians who work for them. Paulie Horvath gets mixed up in the wild new style of music, Jazz. I recommend this book to anyone.
    Two thumbs up!!!

    this is a wonderful book!
This book was really great- funny, gritty, and moving. The psychology of the characters is very real- when Charlotte's father's "manhood" is undermined, he takes out his anger on the only people he has power over- his own family. The children in this book are portrayed as wise, imaginative individuals. This book should be read by people of all ages.

    Critic Reviews:
"Allie, sleuth for the supernatural, returns with another mystery. Her classmate Bettina wants to speak with the ghost in her house, but when Allie and her ghost-hunter friends investigate, the case takes an unexpected direction. Allie can't communicate with the ghost even when they throw a special séance, but she's determined to solve the ghostly problem no matter what. Melissa Chambers reproduces the middle school voices of Allie and her three friends competently. Occasionally her expression is flat, but overall she succeeds in conveying the frustrations of adolescence and the shivery thrills of ghost hunting. There's an eager audience for supernatural stories who will love listening to Allie's exploits." (AudioFile Magazine)
"Jinks is a vivacious children's author whose strong characters and infectious blend of school days and scary nights genres will entrance the target audience." (The Age)

    Author: J. Patrick Lewis

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 21 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-18-13
    Publisher: Recorded Books
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 3 votes
    Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10
    Publisher's Summary:
Cutlass held high above his head, tangled beard shining black as the deepest night, the Pirate King struck fear into the heart of any sailor fool enough to venture out onto the high seas. This daring buccaneer may have been born with the name Edward Teach, but the swashbuckling terror would forever be known as Blackbeard. Tall as a waterfall and strong as a rum-soaked cask, Blackbeard lives on in countless tales of seafaring exploits.
Blackbeard the Pirate King shines light on man and myth alike with rhyming verse that captures his very essence. Included in the collection are stories of Blackbeards youth through his demonic reign as Pirate King.
Award-winning author J. Patrick Lewis has written more than 45 books for children.

My mistake... wanted Blue Beard.. ...
My mistake...wanted Blue Beard...not Black Beard...this book for older kids. Keeping.
    My DAUGHTER loves it
I bought this for my daughter who, despite being a real 'girlie-girl', took a huge interest in pirates. She thoroughly enjoyed reading about Edward Teach - was particularly fascinated by Teach's practice of putting lit matches in his hat. And I am elated that she is interested in something not pink or glittery. Well written and illustrated.
A great book for another Grandson!
Jimmy will love reading this book. As always, once again, Amazon has found the right gift for me to give!!
    yo ho yo ho
I bought this for the background information and the Maitz cover, well, mostly for the latter.
    Thrilling
This book assumes you already know a lot about Blackbeard.
    J. Patrick Lewis writes poetry to tell Blackbeard's biography, and uses artwork from many eras to illustrate the book. It's interesting and fun, but it is difficult to tease the biographical information out of this book.
As a work of literature, this is dynamite, but as a biography, it may not be the best choice. Lewis does include a timeline at the end to summarize the known facts of Blackbeard's life, and the small captions on each page are good. But things like putting fuses in the hat - I had never heard that legend before, and this book did not address it, although many illustrations showed it. Some context for those blazing fuses would have been a good addition, even if it meant including a page on the legends of Blackbeard.
