This is what I look for
A fantasy thriller all tied up in a story without graphic violence or explicit sex.
This duology has a gripping story line with caricatures that make you care. Thanks to all for a great ride.
    It is a unique story...
I enjoyed this series. I love patricia Briggs and she did not dissapoint. The story line was a new take on magic and very well written. The narrator was fairly good as well. She helped to make the story come to life. She is not monotone but instead uses slight differences between the characters which helps to distinguish which character was speaking before any name was given. Overall I would definitely recommend this book to others.
Book 2 of 2. Wishing for another!
Fabulous narration. Top notch! As for the story, this is book two of two, a short fantasy series with wizards, ghosts, vampirism, trolls, mistwraithes, wolf-shifters, elemental gods, specially gifted "Travelers" and a little romance. I really bonded with the characters, first introduced in the prequel, Raven's Shadow. They became real to me across these two books. I want to see more of Seraph, Tier, Jes, Hennea, Lehr, Rinnie, Emperor Phoran the 26/27th, and his two loyal guards. I even loved the big black dog and the old war horse.
Suspenseful, heartwarming, engrossing, and fairly novel. Some grim scenes. Some black magic. Some bardic storytelling, song, and campfire camaraderie, to balance the darker bits. A villain not immediately obvious to me. Great scenes of fierce marital love even after 20 years. Authentic and well-sketched kids (ages about 10, 18, 20) play key roles in both books. Loved watching this family fight shadows together! Loved seeing the kids come into their own. Young Rennie learns to control winds and weather. Lehr learns to hunt, track, and open locks. And Jes learns to integrate his two opposite personas: empath and warrior. Kudos to Briggs for these two books.
My only gripe is that sometimes the author goes on too long, trying to explain how her magic works, what the "orders" are, who the gods are, and how to bind -- and free -- a person's spirit-entwined order (gift).
A lovely ending to this duology, but I wish it wouldn't end yet. How about another, dear author? Maybe Lehr could get a story. Or Rinnie.
    A great story
I have read almost everything Patricia Briggs has written. So far I have not found a story that I didn't like. "Raven's Strike" is a great story and one that I will read again soon.
fun story, it's like brain candy.
What did you love best about Raven's Strike?
The authors ability to create an image unique but easy to identify with.
What does Jennifer James Bradshaw bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Wonderful tone of voice, gentle and easy to listen to. Great inflections in tone of voice that were consistent.

The dragon keepers and the fledgling dragons are forging a passage up the treacherous Rain Wild River. They are in search of the mythical Elderling city of Kelsingra and are accompanied by the liveship Tarman, its captain, Leftrin, and a group of hunters who must search the forests for game with which to keep the dragons fed.
With them are Alise, who has escaped her cold marriage to the cruel libertine Hest Finbok in order to continue her study of dragons, and Hest's amanuensis, Bingtown dandy Sedric. Rivalries and romances are already threatening to disrupt the band of explorers - but external forces may prove to be even more dangerous.

A very LITTLE better than the first book
I loved this author's Farseer trilogy. I loved her Soldier son Trilogy. I though her Tawny man trilogy was also good. I was looking forward to such a trilogy in the Rain Wilds trilogy. I felt very little happened in the first book. In this last book, just a little more happened. I guess the closest thing I can compare how I feel about this series so far is this: It's just like when you are very hungry, an excellent cook invites you to a meal, you sit down to eat, and instead of getting some solid, delicious food, you get watered down soup without any meat, peas, or anything - just hot water. I believe Robin Hobb is a great writer, but this series really hasn't borne that out.
I am always looking for a good new epic fantasy. If you are like me and doing the same and have already done the greats (Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time, George R. R. Martin's A song of ice and fire series - warning: Martin is slow about finishing this series so it gets frustrating) try Brandon Sanderson's books - Elantris is very good. So is his Mistborn series. His new book - War breaker is also pretty good. It seems he is batting a thousand right now - everything he is putting out is pretty good.
There is a series I read recently that was also pretty good - The Deeds of Parksenarion Dathsandotter(a female heroine).
Jack Campbell's Lost Fleet series just got finished - it was very good. Jim Butlter's Codex Alera series is excellent - I have listened to it at least 10 times this year - the series just concluded although I hope JB will continue the series or start a new series that continues the story.
Brent Week's Night Angel trilogy wasn't bad (The way of Shadows, etc). Although I kept seeing reflections of other series in it - a lot of the elements of the world were very similar to elements from the Wheel of Time series.
There are others, but the above is probably good enough for right now.
Please pass on any good series you read.

Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Fantasy: Epic
    Publisher's Summary:
Before #1 New York Times best-selling author Patricia Briggs created her two hugely successful urban fantasy series, Mercy Thompson and Alpha & Omega, she wrote her debut fantasy epic, Masques. Newly revised and expanded, and available in audio for the first time, Masques arrives in our store just in time, with the fourth book in this series, Wolfsbane, coming soon.
After an upbringing of proper behavior and oppressive expectations, Aralorn fled her noble birthright for a life of adventure as a mercenary spy. Her latest mission involves spying on the increasingly powerful sorcerer Geoffrey ae'Magi. But in a war against an enemy armed with the powers of illusion, how do you know who the true enemy is or where he will strike next?
Katherine Kellgren (Pride and Prejudice and Zombies), one of Audible's favorite narrators and one of the premier voices of science fiction and fantasy, sweeps listeners away on this engrossing adventure.
BONUS AUDIO: Includes an introduction written and read by author Patricia Briggs.

    Satisfying tale, interesting characters
Masques is a comfort book. The kind of book you pull out on cold wet days and enjoy with a nice warm blanket and a cup of hot tea. While certainly no Tolkien, Robert Jordan or Anne McCaffrey, Patricia Briggs knows how to tell an emotionally satisfying tale.
We begin the audio book with an author read introduction which explains the real world context within which the book was written. I loved her final 'compromise', in that she admits to fleshing details in the book out with a rewrite, while taking nothing away from the original novel.
As far as the story itself, it is an emotionally satisfying tale, with main characters that are interestingly flawed. This is no epic, but it was enjoyable, and had a few interesting twists and surprises along the way. The two main characters had great chemistry, and the romance between them built comfortably and believably throughout the story.
As far as the reader, she did an excellent job maintaining individual voices for several of the key characters. Her timing and general storytelling skills were definitely great. Sometimes her 'excitement' when reading action passages was noticeable, but it didn't really detract from the story or my enjoyment of it at all.
To summarize: Satisfying, cozy story of sword, sorcery and romance.
    Where's Kane?
Would you consider the audio edition of Masques to be better than the print version?
They are equally good, but I love Katherine Kellgren's interpretation. I listen to this book and it's sequel, Wolfsbane, over and over.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Masques?
When Wolf rescues Aralorn from the ae'Magi's castle.
What about Katherine Kellgren and Patricia Briggs (introduction) s performance did you like?
It was interesting to hear the evolution of this book. I have only lately discovered Patricia Briggs through the Mercy Thompson books, so I have never read the original.
Katherine Kellgren does a stellar job.

    Lots of Fun
I've been listening to a few audio books lately that while were good always felt like a bit of work to get through, that was not the case with Shadow Games.
First off let me say you really don't want to start your Black Company experience here. While Cook does a very good job of allowing this book to be an intro to the series it really will shine in it's proper place as #4.
Following Croaker from book 1 to now you really get a great feel for the guy and are either really interested in his journey or have given up before now. This books picks up right from 3 and does a good job of answering a lot of lingering questions you may have had.
It has as much action as the previous books and brings back enough of the past characters to keep you attached to the events while also adding in enough new gems to keeps things fresh.
Don't get me wrong there book is not perfect. My main gripe relates to the mystery surrounding the villains. It makes some sense but it also is annoying that Cook couldn't come up with better.
Vietor does a great job as always of voicing Croaker and I always felt his performance fit. I have more to add but I want to avoid spoilers even the most obvious ones.
All in all this is a fun read and if you are into the Black Company or this kind of military fantasy style you would really enjoy it.
    New Life
This book yields new life to this series. It draws one back to this story with a vengeance and it is totally worth listening to.
If you made it this far...
If you're at this point in the black company series's you know as well as I do that things are getting a little strange. The narrator for the series is so fantastic but this story is getting a little sideways.
    The company is headed home!
Back to khatovar they go. But will they make it? Will the lady lure them into a tower trap? Will she join them? Will she and croaker....will goblin and one eye be enough to get them there? Will the company grow? Will it just be a handful
On a hopeless quest? How far can the annals take them with so much lost? All this and more my fellow company fans all this and more
    dark and gritty fantasy
oh well written story definitely worth the time I don't even mind that it ended with a cliffhanger8

    Publisher's Summary:
With this outrageous new novel, China Miéville has written one of the strangest, funniest, and flat-out scariest books you will read thisor any otheryear. The London that comes to life in Kraken is a weird metropolis awash in secret currents of myth and magic, where criminals, police, cultists, and wizards are locked in a war to bring aboutor preventthe End of All Things.
In the Darwin Centre at Londons Natural History Museum, Billy Harrow, a cephalopod specialist, is conducting a tour whose climax is meant to be the Centres prize specimen of a rare Architeuthis duxbetter known as the Giant Squid. But Billys tour takes an unexpected turn when the squid suddenly and impossibly vanishes into thin air.
As Billy soon discovers, this is the precipitating act in a struggle to the death between mysterious but powerful forces in a London whose existence he has been blissfully ignorant of until now, a city whose denizenshuman and otherwiseare adept in magic and murder.
All of themand othersare in pursuit of Billy, who inadvertently holds the key to the missing squid, an embryonic god whose powers, properly harnessed, can destroy all that is, was, and ever shall be.
    Critic Reviews:
"Mr. Miéville's novels - seven so far - have been showered with prizes; three have won the Arthur C. Clarke award, given annually to the best science fiction novel published in Britain. [H]e stands out from the crowd for the quality, mischievousness and erudition of his writing. Among the many topics that bubble beneath the wild imagination at play are millennial anxiety, religious cults, the relationship between the citizen and the state and the role of fate and free will." (The New York Times)
    Members Reviews:
    A New Favorite Author
If you like Neil Gaiman, you may like Mieville. I would not describe this story so much as horror (some of Gaiman's stories are more so), but a philosophical fantasy. Kraken has less steam-punk and science fiction than some of Mieville's other stories, although it has plenty of the fantastic. It is a riot. In this story, it is centered very much in the alternate reality of the City of London, which is a major character in Kraken. If you are an architect or interested in cities, you may love it for this reason alone, but if you are interested in more intellectual sci-fi-fantasy with other influences of science and religion, you may also like it. The characters, moreover, are also more developed, or memorable, than some of his other stories. Lastly, the narration, by John Lee, is of course superb. I listened to it twice.
    Arcane Horror A-Go-Go!
Another classic Mieville immersion into the unconscious of London herself - but this time through the ink of a magical giant squid. And not just any giant squid mind you, but god-spawn... Join Billy the museum curator, and preserver of said deus enfant, on his horryifying and often hilarious journey through the seedy underbelly of London's secret religions. Dark magic and evil, dripping beasties spawn from every crevice as Billy tries to preserve his sanity and his life. Fans of Mieville's Perdido Street Station will feel right at home in this occult city on the brink of apocalypse(s?!). Narration of Mieville's rollicking and eerie prose performed splendidly by John Lee.
    A new favorite
I was skeptical about this book from the mixed reviews it got.

    Thrilling ordeal
Abercrombie uses this book to assemble his cast of characters, and a fascinating and irresistible crew they are. Flawed, idiosyncratic, dangerous and often quite funny when they least mean to be, they have been dragged kicking and screaming into his tale and, by the end of the book, he has them all moving reluctantly in the same direction. The wonder is that, while we know the "real" story has not even begun yet, he has already ushered us through a harrowing and thrilling ordeal filled with brilliant detail. Simultaneously, along the way, he has introduced us to a fully imagined world which is remarkably convincing. And as several other reviewers have remarked, not the least of the attraction is that the characters we meet are complex and unlikely heroes.
I bought this audiobook because I so enjoyed "Best Served Cold," by the same author. I was slightly apprehensive because a part of the attraction of that book was the narrator, Michael Page, who did a superb job. I was a bit sad that he was not the narrator for this one as well. To my amazement I found that Steven Pacey was at least Page's equal and perhaps even a demi-shade better. This is a wonderful marriage of great writing and great reading.
I am going to have to delay reading the second and third books in this series because I am loathe to have the whole thing end. Anticipation will heighten the experience, I think. In any event, Abercrombie is now among my very favorite authors of this genre.
Violent, Ironic, and Absorbing Epic Fantasy Noir
In Joe Abercrombie's The Blade Itself (2006), swords, knives, axes, maces, spears, staves, bows, crossbows, tongs, chisels, lumber, fists, feet, arms, legs, teeth, and magical force all are put to bloody use during scenes of cinematic graphic violence ranging in scale from arrests and interrogations to ambushes and skirmishes (full scale battles are sure to come in the second or third novels in Abercrombie's epic fantasy noir First Law trilogy).

Great background leading into Dragon Age Origins
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it tells yet another great background to Marics rise in power and the struggles he goes through as a King. It also has an excellent background story for the Darkspawn.
What does Stephen Hoye bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The accent. When playing the game, characters speak in a light British accent. So that's what I expected when listening to the book.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes, The book made be laugh and sigh at some moments. Duncan is hilarious.
    Any additional comments?
This book has a lot more story behind it. it takes place in a few weeks/months apposed to a few years for The Stolen Throne. There are very important aspects of the book that relate to understanding some things within the games. The Epilogue was amazing, it was a wonderful yet sad ending to a great story! The legacy lives on.
Essential reading for fans of the game!
The novel is essential reading for those who have played Dragon Age and the expansion packs especially Awakening. The book completes many story elements which are not covered in the game.
    Great series!!!
    Good for fans of game
What did you like best about Dragon Age: The Calling? What did you like least?
It's written by the lead writer for the Dragon Age series, so I liked that it explored that world. There were moments where it got too video-gamey - where it became too obvious that Gaider was trying to novelize gameplay elements.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
As with Dragon Age Origins, there was WAY too much time spent in the Fade. Did we need to rescue EVERY character?
What does Stephen Hoye bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
He did a good job of dramatizing the action and making it seem engaging and not goofy.
Was Dragon Age: The Calling worth the listening time?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
Fun fantasy, well-written for a novelization, but I'm not sure it would appeal to people not invested in the story through the games.
Eye-core is the name of my new metal band
An excellent vocal performance doesn't set this one above any of the hundred other video game novels. Gaider uses a lot of tropes and out-of-place figures of speech to deliver the same experience as Salvatore, Nylund, and others. Of course, if that's what you're looking for than this might be worth a listen.
    Meh...
I've listened to both books and I have to say; honestly the first one was much better in many, many ways. The character development in this one is okay but the characters are just not that interesting in the least and it's very hard to care for them. Very predictable emotions and a lot of overused phrases kind of get annoying.
