    Publisher's Summary:
Then disaster strikes. In one terrible instant, Kindan loses his family and the camp loses its watch-wher. Fathers are replaced by sons in the mine - except for Kindan, who is taken in by the camp's new Harper. Grieving, Kindan finds a measure of solace in a burgeoning musical talent...and in a new friendship with Nuella, a mysterious girl no one seems to know exists. It is Nuella who assists Kindan when he is selected to hatch and train a new watch-wher, a job that forces him to give up his dream of becoming a Harper; and it is Nuella who helps him give new meaning to his life.
Meanwhile, sparked by the tragedy, long-simmering tensions are dividing the camp. Far below the surface, a group of resentful miners hides a deadly secret. As warring factions threaten to explode, Nuella and Kindan begin to discover unknown talents in the misunderstood watch-wher-talents that could very well save an entire Hold. During their time teaching the watch-wher, the two learn some things themselves: that even a seemingly impossible dream is never completely out of reach...and that light can be found even in the deepest darkness.

    Over too soon
The story felt cut off. I wanted it to be a trilogy! The kids weren't done growing, and I wanted to know more about watch-whers. Having read many of the Pern novels, I know Ann tends to ramble. Todd seems to keep the story more focused. An excellent book.
The performance was wonderful. Every character had its own voice and patterns of speech. He even put in noises such as coughs and laughter, which really brought the story to life.
    great fiction
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
    another great listen
Who was your favorite character and why?
    all characters were well developed.
Which character as performed by Dick Hill was your favorite?
    loved the harper.
    Any additional comments?
for the people who say there are discrepancies with the previously written books - get over it, it's not distracting (it was so enjoyable I barely noticed) - things can change - because..um..well, it's fiction.
    A one off
I have been reading the Pern books from the beginning this is the only one I have not cared for. There really is no story persay
    Dragon's Kin
I love all of the dragons of Pern, but the narrator, Don Hill, does not seem to pre-read a chapter, page or even scene, to make tone of voice more life-like, until the second half of the sentences. But I Love the stories; series. Dragons ho!!
    The ending...
Wish it would have ended differently but then I guess I'm not the author lol...

    Publisher's Summary:
It is a perilous time for harpers. They sing of Thread, yet more and more people are beginning to doubt the return of that deadly scourge. They teach reading, writing, history, but Fax - who hates the harpers in general - is determined to keep his growing area of influence free of the learning that might sow unrest. And they extol the dragonriders, whom many view increasingly as a drain on the resources of the Holds. Now harpers are being turned away from the holds; and, worse yet, they are being derided, attacked, even beaten.
It is the climate of unrest that Robinton will come into his own. For despite the tragedies that beset his own life, he continues to believe in music and in the dragons, and is determined to save his beloved Pern from itself . . .so that the dragonriders can be ready to fly against the dreaded Thread when it at last returns!

Generally very enjoyable, some minor flaws
This is one of the better sequels, or in this case a prequel, to McCaffrey's original six Pern novels. Robinton is a great character and although she makes him suffer more disappointment in life than anybody should bear, McCaffrey fills in a lot of interesting "historical" detail leading up to Dragonquest. However, she sometimes errs in the details (how could Sebell simultaneously be an adolescent journeyman when Fax takes Ruatha hold and still be the same age some twenty years later when Menolly arrives at the Harper hall?)
The narrator is generally very good and uses a variety of voices. My only quibble is that children and adolescent boys sound a bit too whiny and are delivered with a vaguely distracting NY/NJ style accent.
Overall, highly enjoyable. I would order it again.
Plot holes galore, but more of Robinton
Would you listen to The Masterharper of Pern again? Why?
Unfortunately, and in spite of the preface claiming someone found all the plot holes, there is a lot wrong with this book. The final chapter, which mirrors the very first book's opening chapters, is just so very off. Then there's the fact that Robinton spoke to dragons when he was young, but he somehow never knew that in the original books....
Ah well. He falls in love, etc. and it brings together so many characters from the books. The Lady Holdless makes a brief cameo. You find out where Camo came from. Lessa shows up as a child. Parts of the story that (when they fit) are great to hear.
My main criticism of the performance is that Dick Hill can NOT play a girl to save his life. He is always making them weepy and gaspingly emotional. Not one of the women comes off as strong or sensible. I'm glad I have the story, but it's not one I listen to often.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
    Predicted by earlier books
Which character as performed by Dick Hill was your favorite?
Robinton's predecessor as master Harper was just about right.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    No
    terrible narrative. awesome book
terrible narrator best book written love mccaffrey. wont recommend audible but will recommend book
    Truly an enjoyment!
I have read most of the Pern books, this is one of the most delightful.
    Excellent backstory
Probably the best book in her entire series, even above those that shot her to fame. For all that this is a prequel to the original trilogy, this story never stopped being exciting.

Halla is one of the children of the Shunned. Though innocent of their parents' crimes, these children have inherited their cruel punishment. Lack of food, shelter, and clothes is their lot; hope is unknown to them. And what future would they hope for? Without a hold to call their own, there will be no protection for them when the lethal Thread inevitably falls again.
Life is particularly tough for Halla. Her family gone, she must fend for herself. Yet despite the brutality of her surroundings, Halla is kind and gentle, devoted to those more helpless than she.
As depraved as Halla is good, Tenim is in league with Tarik, a crooked miner from Camp Natalon, who helps him steal coal in exchange for a cut of the profit. But Tenim soon realizes there is a lot more to be made from firestone, the volatile mineral that enables the dragons of Pern to burn Thread out of the sky. Tenim doesn't care what he has to do, or whom he has to kill, in order to corner the market.
Cristov is Tarik's son. Dishonored by his father's treachery, the boy feels he must make amends, even if it means risking his life by mining the volatile firestone, which detonates on contact with the slightest drop of moisture.
When the last remaining firestone mine explodes in flames, a desperate race begins to find a new deposit of the deadly but essential mineral, for without it there can be no defense against Thread.

Glad this story is going on
Would you listen to Dragon's Fire again? Why?
yes, the pern series is amazing.
What did you like best about this story?
The dragons. I've always loved this series for the amazing dynamic between the dragons and their riders, who doesn't dream of having a psychically linked mythological best friend on a non destroyed and polluted planet!
Have you listened to any of Dick Hills other performances before? How does this one compare?
    no
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes
    Any additional comments?
Todd is not as talented as his mother but he still does a good job. I try to keep him seperate in my mind from his mother, and not judge him too harshly. I'm sure his mother could never have completely shared the pern in her mind with anyone no matter how hard she tried. He does a fantastic job of keeping us fed with pern stories and I for one am so glad that he continued it as I was just not ready to let pern go!
Sorry, Todd, you don't measure up
Would you ever listen to anything by Anne McCaffrey and Todd McCaffrey again?
I enjoyed the early Pern Books wholeheartedly and adored the characters and plot points. Those with Todd tend to fade from my memory.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Dick Hill?
I would not be swayed to by a book it saw his name, nor would I avoid it. He is adequate.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Hope it would get better..... Disappointment it did not.

Don't be so harsh on the narrator
I have listened to 80 or so audiobooks and lots of different narrators. The hardest thing for a narrator to do is follow someone else who has started the series and already given the characters life. Though the female characters are a little rough and kind of sound the same, I think his pace is right on and a lot of the characters sound the same from the first book. I think he had an almost impossible task in matching the first narrator but he does an admirable job. Phil at least did his homework. I listened to one series where the second narrator did not even pronounce the main characters names the same. That will throw you WAY off.
    outstanding !!!
the book was outstanding, with excellent character dramatizations by the narrator - I found it hard to believe that this was one person making all these different voices! it is a great apocalyptic story filled with hope, faith, and the supernatural! lots of great biblical references too.
    Second of a Trilogy
What did you love best about The Elves of Cintra?
Elves continues the story created by Terry Brooks in the Genesis of Shannara trilogy. The well-written characters develop very well, growing out of old problems and confronting new ones.
If youve listened to books by Terry Brooks before, how does this one compare?
I've listened to Book 1 from this series, Armageddon's Children. Unfortunately they had to switch readers for this book, and it suffered a little for it. The content has the same great setting and pace, but suffers a little for being the second of third book in a cliffhanger series. So it seems to wrap up the first book, but only set the stage for the third, with nothing to help it breathe on it's own.
    Great 2nd book
Really liked this second book in the series but don't think I would have enjoyed it without reading the first book.

When the man Niobe loves is shot, she wants revenge. Her only chance is to accept a challenge to solve a maze of riddles devised by Satan himself. But Niobe's strength is her beauty, not her intelligence, and the fate of the human race hangs in the balance. Can she outwit Satan at his own game, or has her failure already been woven into the very Tapestry of Fate?
George Guidall's enthralling narration captures the essence of Anthony's rich characters and timeless story. Ingenious, ambitious, and hauntingly philosophical, With a Tangled Skein is Piers Anthony at his best.
    Members Reviews:
Not as good as the first two.
This is the third book in this series. It is still more about problem solving than character development. The story in this one wasn't as tight as the previous two novels. I do like how one novel inter-relates with the previous ones. The nararator, much lke the novel is ok but nothing spectacular.
    A little backstory.
Skein begins many years before the events of On a Pale Horse. As the story opens, Niobe, a headstrong and proud young Irish woman is betrothed to a boy five years her junior and none too pleased about it. But as her father points out, the marriage to Cedric Kaftan will benefit the family. The marriage proceeds and, as time passes, Niobe discovers that Cedric, despite seeming little more than a backwoods bumpkin, is a decent and hardworking young man with the astonishing ability to conjure an invisible but otherworldly musical accompaniment anytime he sings a song. Niobe gradually grows to love Cedric, who soon begins to share her own passion for protecting wetlands and decides to study to become a magician in order to further that goal. In time the couple welcome their son, Cedric Junior, into the world. Not long after, however, the outside world intrudes on their happiness when plans are made to drain the wetlands and build a housing development. While fighting alongside the other residents to halt this project, Cedric is unexpectedly shot to death, prompting Niobe to seek the aid of the Incarnations to try to save him. She soon learns, however, that Cedric's death had less to do with his attempts to halt development of the wetlands than with Niobe herself. She in fact was the intended target of the bullet, a fact which reminds Niobe of disturbing visions she would have when she and Cedric made love. Niobe learns that she is destined to foil Satan, Incarnation of Evil, and it was for that reason that he tried to have her killed. Cedric, it transpired, somehow learned of this and resolved to switch places with Niobe. With that knowledge, Niobe readily accepts the Incarnations' invitation for her to become one of the three aspects of Fate, resolving not to allow Cedric to have died in vain.
All in all this is an excellent read and it explains the origins of some characters and events mentioned in On a Pale Horse and Bearing an Hourglass. George Gidall as usual does a fine job with the narration. Recorded Books, I've noticed, generally tends to pick excellent narrators for the titles they put their hands to.
    love
love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love, love the series, the story and the creator.
    Excellent

Being a Green Mother continues Anthony's entertaining look at society through a lens of magic. And Barbara Caruso's lyrical narration is a wonderful addition to this endlessly inventive series.
    Critic Reviews:
"This conclusion to one of Anthony's most popular series abounds with the author's love for logical conundrums and coy humor." (
    Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    The series is consistant
The series is very consistant. If you liked the other books this one will please you as well. It is a solid story and the only reason i gave it 3's was that Anthony is not the best at writing in the female point of view (my opinion). The way the author links all the boioks together and you catch hints of what was going on behind the scenes in previous novels is very good.
    Being a Green Mother
This fifth installment of Incarnations of Immortality opens some years before the events of Wielding a Red Sword. It tells the story of Orb, the daughter of Niobe Kaftan. When she was five, Orb woke to the sound of a beautiful but mysterious melody and followed it. In time she learned that tis melody, called the Song of the Morning by most who knew of it and could hear it, was but one ffragment of a mysterious melody known as the Llano said to be te ultimate music. Years later Orb, now a young woman, embarks on a quest to learn as much as she can about this elusive song and, if possible, possess it. But Orb's quest for the Llano could bring danger, for it soon becomes apparent that Satan, Incarnation of Evil, has an interest in Orb and seeks to marry her in fulfillment of a prophecy made long before Orb's birth. The Llano itself also has its own dangers and, if handled improperly, could bring about the destruction of the entire world.
Unlike the first four volumes in the series, this book is not read by George Guidall. Fortunately however, Barbara Caruso has a pleasant voice for narration and a talent for expression, accents and dialects. She also has a fair singing voice, which is extremely fortunate considering the songs sprinkled liberally throughout the story. Even a good narrator can ruin a performance if they try to sing the songs in the story if they can't sing. Fortunately both George Guidall and Barbara Caruso have good singing voices. Needless to say I couldn't put it down for long.
Slow at times, but resounding finish.
This book was I believe originally intended to be the last book in the series, and indeed it could easily serve as the conclusion to an excellent set of novels. This book is slower than the others, but interesting most of the time. Towards the end I lost some interest but the ending made the entire book worth reading many times over. In my opinion the book would have been better if some details were removed and the process leading up to the end quickened, but other than that I have no complaints.
The story of Orb is a good one, though considerably different from the stories of the other incarnations. What makes this story truly good, maybe great, is its implications for the series as a whole.

BEN FRANKLIN; AMERICA'S MOST POWERFUL WIZARD
This is an Alternate History American Fantasy. This alone is makes for a great story. This is an America divided up between England, Spain, Dutch, French and North American Indians. The map alone is cool. There are Duchies, States and Territories. There is a New Sweden, Camelot, New Orange, Suskwaheny, Noisy River Terr. and Irrakwa State. Canada is French.
SHE SHOULD HAVE LEARNT THE WORD NO, BEFORE SHE HAD 14 MOUTHS TO FEED.
This is about a very large family, struggling to survive in a harsh world. A world where people have knacks and certain gifts. They survive by using charms, beseechings, hexes and potions. Often these are used against them. It is a struggle between good and evil. This is different from Card's Sci-Fi, but it is still written with his talent and is a great entry into Fantasy if you have never tried it.
A MAN ALWAYS ASSUMES THAT OTHERS ARE AS VIRTUOUS AS HIMSELF.
I read this over 30 years ago and wondered if it would stand up to my memory of it. It was just as good if not better. This is one book you could read over and over and get more out of it each time.
    NOT + NOT= NOT
My one irk with the whole thing was the narrators. There are several narrators including Orson Scott Card. One of the narrators is one of my favorites and there is one I hate. I usually like Card's voice, but believe he should have left this to the professionals. All the narrators do all the voices instead of doing certain characters. Sometimes a character has a certain accent, and then sometimes he does not. This is a small complaint, the writing makes up for any narrator problems and those are few.
    Great story, great reading
Seventh Son has always been one of my favorite books. I waited for a very long time for an unabridged audio version. I was a little worried that it wouldn't live up to my high expectations, but the cast more than delivered. All the readers are so very talented. My only complaint is that Rev. Thrower sometimes lapses in and out of his Scottish accent, but it happens at appropriate enough times.
Seventh Son is creative storytelling at its very best. As an "alternate history" of America, you can't beat this book for color and charm. The characters are thoroughly believable and sympathetic.
Frontiersy magic-stories might be a departure for Card fans who are used to his sci-fi works, but give Seventh Son and its sequels a try anyhow. Card comes through with his usual brilliant characterization, real dialogue, and perfectly paced plot.
    Not Orson's Best.

    Who could believe
By the grace of some higher being I have been blessed by two great series from the same Author. Orson Scott Card has been the writer of my twenties and hopefully as I turn Thirty (two weeks from now) he will continue for another decade (at least). I started this unabridged version of Alvin Journey Maker mere minutes after finishing it's predecessor (the time it took me to jump to my laptop, search in Audible and pay for the @#$@ thing :) and with the sad knowledge that there was no unabridged book three. After a week of driving and listening, and driving for the sake of listening (and ignoring 'Husband' for the sake of listening) I finished this exquisite movie of characters and adventure to find that only five days before, the third book, Prentice Alvin, had been released.
So instead of telling you how great, wonderful, fantastic and interesting this book is (well DUH!) I'd like to send a message to the Author, and the narrators of this series (and the Ender series because thankfully you guys stick together). You are all brilliant (though I still can't tell you apart), your readers love you and Please Please Please continue the wonderful work.

We meet Alvin as a baby and follow him into boyhood. At the end of the story he has a vision of a shining man who gives him moral guidance.
In Red Prophet we learn that the shining man is Lolla-Wossiky, an alternate version of Tenskwatawa, spiritual leader of the Native American Shawnee tribe. His brother Tecumseh is their chief. While Card focused on the religious implications of a magical American frontier in the first book, the focus here is on the interaction between the Whites and the Reds and culminates with The Battle of Tippecanoe.
At the beginning of the story, William Henry Harrison, governor of Carthage City, is dealing with the Native Americans his own way with poison. He purchases huge quantities of whiskey and sells it to the Whiskey Reds.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Please Audible, get this in the unabridged version. You miss so much in the abridged form.
    Where's the Unabridged version!?!?
Great story, wish I could have heard the whole thing. An unabridged version would be nice.
    abridged? what for?
I can't understand why an audio book has been abridged. Terry Brooks is an amazing writer of fantasy adventure, to cut this story down like it has been is a disgrace
    Too short
Why does audible not have the unabridged version. The whole book would have been much better.
    naration

    Redaktionelle Rezensionen:

    Misleading
It mislead me to think it was the English version of the book and I wasted a credit on it that can't get back now.
    misleading
normally a great book, but due to it being in German I can not understand it and therefore have wasted my money. does anyone know how to get your money back or trade in a book for another or a credit token.
    English?
English? Downloaded and read the first book. This one popped up as the next in line so we downloaded it, but it's in German? Can't seem to locate volume 2 in English. Bummed. Waste of my money.
