    Intriguing start
This first book hints at the promise of a great series. The feel of this book is entirely like that of a prologue, what I mean is that the entire books seems like it is setting up something for later. The story itself is actually a bit slow as the entire purpose seems to be to introduce and develop the main character, Paks (aka Paksenarrion). Yes there are some battles, but they are almost glossed over and at no time does it really seem that Paks is in any REAL danger, probably because at the start of the book we learn that the entire book is a memoir of some sort. So who is Paks? Well, Paks is/was(?) a person who achieved some sort of greatness, exactly what and how she achieved that greatness is apparently the content of this series. I don't want to give too much away, the mystery of whom and what Paks becomes is central to the enticement of the novel. I fear if I tell you my suspicions, it will diminish some of the pleasure you may feel reading the novel.
Overall this book kept my attention and I looking forward to book 2. To be honest it failed to REALLY grab me, and if the second book continues in this way I can see myself becoming bored. But, if it fulfills the promise foreshadowed in this book the series might be fantastic.
Written book translates to excellent audio book
I read this book when it was first released in 1988. When my husband and I started collecting audio book titles we searched for books that we had once enjoyed reading. We had been looking for The Deed of Paksenarrion ever since we started listening to audio books about a decade ago. This had been one title that had been overlooked for conversion to the audio book format. When it finally came out I snapped it up from Audible.com and I have not regretted it.
Narration: I have been unhappy with some of Jennifer Van Dyck's narrations in the past, mostly when she followed a favored narrator in a series and didn't check previous pronunciations. This time she is coming into the series fresh and has made it her own. I think she has done an exceptional job of making the Paksenarrion tales come to life and have thoroughly enjoyed listening to the book that I enjoyed reading many years ago. Kudos to Ms. Van Dyck for her performance in the Paksenarrion titles.
Paksenarrion brings to mind an epic journey similar to The Obsidian Trilogy by Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory, or The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, only not as lengthy. Alas, I sometimes wish that it were longer, or that Elizabeth Moon were a more prolific writer. Though what she does produce is always worth the time to peruse.
For lovers of the fantasy genre you can't go wrong with any of the Paksenarrion books.
Now if the publishers would go back a bit further and include "Liar's Oath" and "Surrender None" and you would have the complete world from which Paksenarrion comes. "Liar's Oath" and "Surrender None" predate Paksenarrion and explain St. Gird and his assistant Luap and the formation of the Fellowship of Gird.
    Finally in Audio Format!!!
I remember first reading this book over a decade ago, and I fell in love with this series.

Great Finish to a Great Trilogy
Book One was fabulous! Book Two slacked off a little, but was necessary in context to the trials Paksenarrion had to go through to blossom into the Paladin she was meant to be in Book Three. The last installment was the best of the three. I was so glad I took the leap on this Audible series. I loved it so much I bought a NEW COPY of the book to add to my permanent library. This trilogy has become my all time favorite!! Jennifer Van Dyck was a pleasure to listen to the whole way through. She definitely was able to differentiate between different charactors and had a pace and timbre that made it easy to follow along and enjoy. GET ALL THREE BOOKS! This series is a keeper .....
    Always gives me goose bumps
loved this book, have read it many times and always gives me goose bumps. the reading was well done. I think the reader really does the book credit. an excellent finish for the story of paks.
    In the tradition of heroes
Add Paksenarrion (an elfin name) to the pantheon of my heroes. In my review of Sheep Farmer's Daughter, Book 1 of The trilogy Deed Of Paksenarrion, I marveled at Moon's treatment of military issues and her integration of men and women in positions of leadership and of lesser rank. As I read the trilogy, Paks grew on me. I still feel that more character development a la George R. R. Martin and Terry Goodkind, would have fmade the trilogy a richer experience. This said, the trilogy is all about Paks, a remarkably human hero. I was in continual suspense about her fate until near the very end. But Moon does not kill off characters as Martin does. Instead, Moon wraps a gripping and at times spell binding tale around the development of her lead character, Paksenarrion Dorfan's Daughter. A well done first trilogy, in my opinion I am richer for having read it.
    A Truly Epic Ending
This tale has a true epic ending. In some was Paksenarrion may be the best example of a Paladin I've ever had the luck to read of in any Fantasy tale. This story should not be missed.
Getting to like the Narrator better
By all account this is the most exciting of the books. There is more growth of all the characters an enough fighting and intrigue to keep you interested. I would recommend.

    Narrator is very bad.
Loved this book and have approved of all the books in the series. I do not like the narrator at all. She does not change how she describes mundane issues with how she describes fights and battles. It is very hard to get excited about the book the first time through. Definitely would not use this narrator again. Will not seek out books read by her.
    Lots of Adventure
Paks sets out on an adventure and there is plenty in this book. This is completely different than the first book. My only complaint is the narrators choice for the elves. This is silly on my part, but they sound like the aliens in the "Galaxy Quest" movie and it grates on my nerves.
    still love it
Read this book about 20 years ago and I loved it that and am happy to say I still love it today
    Great Story
A good read, has an unusual ending. I had to purchase the third in the series. I highly recommend this!!
    a fantasy to enthrall

    Fantastic Read
This is an excellent read even if you have not played the game at all. I was losing sleep because I had to figure out what would happen next. If you enjoy dark fantasy novels this is the one.The narrator was just perfect and the audio quality is fantastic. Thanks audible for a great 13 hours.
A Great Prequel for Dragon Age
The novel is essential reading for those who have played Dragon Age and want to know more about origins briefly mentioned in the game especially Loghain.
    Great series!!!
Never played the game, but a good story.
I liked this one most of the two books, mostly because the character development in this one is much better, although still a bit simplistic and often times uninteresting. The main character is really quite predictable until events unfold that change him. There is a lot of good action scenes and some interesting turns--albeit the plot is somewhat predictable in some parts--but for the most part was still interesting. Some of the phrases used to describe things are overused a lot and get rather annoying. The narrator was good and did a fine job of putting emphasis on high 'energy' situations and acted the parts very well.
    A Wonderful Epic Adventure
This book is wonderful you are immediately captivated by the story. Stephen Hoye's voice is exactly what I hoped for he paints the picture of this story beautifully. I wasn't able to stop listening. This reminds me of people sitting around the radio before the days of television. Just Fantastic!!!
More than just background to a Great Game
Big Fan of Bioware games. Was expecting a time waster novel for a long drive I had, that would give some background on the Dragon Age game which I love. To my surprise it exceeded my expectations and then some. Kept me engaged from start to finish. Very good character developement, engaging albeit predictatble plot, and excellent naration. Probably not for anyone who has no interest in the game, but if you have played or are planning to highly recomend using a point for this excellent fast paced listen.

Kellen Tavadon, son of the Arch-Mage Lycaelon, thought he knew the way the world worked. His father, leading the wise and benevolent Council of Mages, protected and guided the citizens of the Golden City of the Bells. Young Mages in training---all men, for women were unfit to practice magic---memorized the intricate details of High Magic and aspired to seats on the council.
Then Kellen found the forbidden Books of Wild Magic---or did they find him? Their Magic felt like a living thing, guided by the hearts and minds of those who practiced it and benefited from it. Questioning everything he has known, Kellen discovers too many of the City's dark secrets. Banished, with the Outlaw Hunt on his heels, Kellen invokes Wild Magic---and finds himself running for his life with a unicorn at his side.
Rescued by a unicorn, healed by a female Wild Mage who knows more about Kellen than anyone outside the City should, meeting Elven royalty and Elven warriors, and plunged into a world full of magical beings, Kellen both revels in and fears his new freedom. The one thing all the Mages of the City agreed on was that practicing Wild Magic corrupted a Mage---turned him into a Demon. Would that be Kellen's fate?
Deep in Obsidian Mountain, the Demons are waiting. Since their defeat in the last great War, they've been biding their time, sowing the seeds of distrust and discontent between their human and Elven enemies. Very soon now, when the Demons rise to make war, there will be no alliance between High and Wild Magic to stand against them. And then all the world will belong to the Endarkened.

    Long, but enjoyable
I have read this book (and the rest of the series) several times since buying them in paperback a few years ago. The audio version highlighted a few flaws, such as the overly-long descriptions (especially of the various antagonists) and the very slow first half of the book. Susan Ericksen, however, is a fantastic narrator, and I thoroughly enjoyed listening. Kellen is presented as a youth who is dissatisfied with his life. Although he could easily have grown up as a spoiled brat, he thinks about the people around him and is indignant on their behalf as he learns about various ways in which the high mages take advantage of them.
One reviewer claims that Kellen acts like a 10-13 year old. I have two teenage boys, and I can only wish they showed the kind of concern for others I see in this character. Yes, he has doubts, but I don't see any evidence of the whining some others complain of. In fact, being handed one shock after another, being uprooted and having to make major adjustments in his life, he deals with it quite well for the most part.
The biggest problem with this book is the amount of repetition. Especially when Kellen is musing over a problem, injustice, or puzzle, the same questions and observations are repeated way too many times. It's almost like the authors are concerned the reader will forget something important, which is unfortunate.
I fully intend to get the next two books on audio. To avoid spoilers, I will only say that some of the story arcs resolve very interesting and surprising ways, and there are enough plot twists to keep the reader (or listener) guessing.

Obviously the first book of three
I would have given this one 3.5 stars if I had been able to, but please don't take me wrong. I love this series and found the narration here to add significantly to my enjoyment. Many characters are introduced in this, the first book of the Fionavar Tapestry. Simon Vance gives us a clean and easy to follow interpretation of the, possibly too many, different regional groups that we meet herein.
If you like books that delve in to character development, Kay very rarely disappoints. Additionally, the world he creates is different enough to be fantasy without being so strange that it becomes completely ridiculous. Here, not only do we get a world that becomes the setting for the story, but a glimpse of things to come and an interweaving of that world's legends with our own.
In true Kay fashion, we are introduced to so many different characters and groups that is can become confusing. The narration, giving each of these characters and groups a unique voice, should go a long way to saving this one for those who haven't read it in print. Also, and true to many a first-of-trilogy tomes, a great deal of this book is spent introducing us to people, concepts, lore and mythology of the world within the story. This can make it feel a bit long at times, mostly because we don't yet know why much of it is important.
If you can read this with the understanding that it is the first book of three, it is a wonderful introduction to story and character. However, without reading the "rest" of the story, this book does fall a bit short of being able to stand on its own merit.
I do believe that this trilogy is worth reading and that the story and characters become more compelling with each successive book. I also think that you need to go in to this one with the understanding that it is the first 1/3 of a story and so much of it is spent giving us enough knowledge to follow and enjoy the second and third books.
    Poetic and Heroic
I read this series a great many years ago and remembered the books with fondness. Therefore, I was very happy to experience them again in audio. I think they may have been best in the reading however. Guy Gavriel Kay writes quite poetically, with a lot of high-flown language. On audio, it comes across a a bit over the top.
Don't get me wrong: there are still the characters you get very attached to and the heroic story that brings to mind Greek, Celtic and religious mythology and the best of Tolkien. "The Summer Tree" is rich with lots of psychological and mythological undertones, yet it is firmly grounded by the Canadians who travel from our world to Fionavar.

As painful and glorious as life
Kay creates worlds and characters which are true. We recognize in his characters the familiar ambiguity of our own virtues and shortcomings, the complexity which marks us as human. And the world of "The Hand" in which Tigana transpires makes consistent sense in every way: politically, culturally, and in its system of magic. It is also beautifully evoked in Kay's superb prose style.
Some reviewers have complained about the predominance of interior monologue at the expense of action. In general I prefer it when an author moves a story along through event rather than introspection, but I found the lives of these characters so convincing and conflicted that I seldom minded hearing about them. I do think Kay could trim his word count some, but he writes so effectively, that I could not mind much.
And the action is so powerful and imaginative, shocking and glorious at the crucial moments, that it richly rewards the wait. Wonderful writing.
    Tigana
    Any additional comments?
I forget how I came upon this excellent author, but once I had downloaded itread by the lyrical Simon Vance, who could, as they say, read a phone book and move you to tears I could not put it down. Extremely engaging, extremely witty and alsoextremely troubling. Violence, grotesque and nightmarish violence, is always at your elbow in this bookand in subsequent books of the author that I have encountered. There is also a certain amount of explicit sex. Not for the fainthearted, nor for the squeamishwhich would usually include me, but somehow, didnt, this time.
The story takes place in a fictional world, which however has a solid believable presence, and a tenuous relationship with medieval Italy. But so what, you saymany fantasy books are based on medieval history, many books blend fantasy with believable real world details. What this book has is all thatbut also, elegant language and exceptional plotting. This is a skillful work of art, filled with gorgeous images and a certain zest for life, for singing, for drinking with friends. And even, something of a happy ending, a thing of which I am inordinately fond.
Says a lot about who we are.
I believe the best way to describe what was for me the essence of Tigana is to quote a passage from the afterward of the book by the author Guy Gavriel Kay:
... there's a play called 'Translations', by Brian Friel. It is basically an extended, passionate debate between a village priest in Ireland and the leader of an English survey team that has been traversing the countryside, mapping it carefully and - more importantly - changing the names of places, from Gaelic to English. Both men are aware of what is at stake: when you want to subjugate a people - to erase their sense of themselves as separate and distinctive - one place to start (and it is sometimes enough) is with their language and names. Names link to history, and we need a sense of our history to define ourselves.

    Fafhrd/Gray Mouser
Thank you Audible for making Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd/Gray Mouser series available. The narrator Jonathan Davis does an outstanding job of bringing life to this saga. Mr. Leiber was such a wonderful wordsmith. Listening to this series is such a treat after reading them all 25+ years ago. Highly recommend this book (and others in the set) to those who enjoy 'high adventure, sorcery and witchery' and lots of dialogue.
    Pleasantly surprised
What made the experience of listening to Swords and Deviltry the most enjoyable?
I wasn't sure what to expect from this, but it was quite enjoyable. There are no pretenses of being anything more than a good adventure story that happens to be set in an world where magic and sorcery is real. While describing a vivid and diverse imaginary setting, it avoids the tedium of an overly complex mythology (which many writers since Tolkien have attempted, but few have succeeded). The characters are interesting (although perhaps with a level of development meant to appeal primarily to a male, young adult, readership). The female characters are mostly consorts, conquests and occasional foils for the male protagonists. The plot is somewhat predictable, but the skillful storytelling makes it enjoyable nonetheless.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Swords and Deviltry?
    Fafhrd's rocket-assisted ski jump was laugh-out-loud funny.
What about Jonathan Davis and Neil Gaiman (introduction) s performance did you like?
This was the first reading by Davis that I've listened to. The characterizations were quite good and I was able to distinguish the characters without much trouble.
    Not just for men!
I must confess that I had some preconceived notions about Fritz Leiber???s work. Because he???s credited with coining the phrase ???Sword & Sorcery,??? and because I never hear women talking about his stories, I imagined that they appealed mainly to men who like to read stuff that has warrior babes on the covers.
But when I saw this on audio (finally), I decided to give it a try because it's classic fantasy literature.
So, I put Swords and Deviltry on my MP3 player and pressed play. Within two minutes, I was completely enthralled.

A great end to this trilogy
The writing is good. if you enjoyed the first two novels you will like this one as well. All the lose ends from the story are tied up nicely while still leaving room for the next series. I guess I am in the majority as I actually liked the narrarator and thought he did a good job, especially as all of Eddings books have a ton of characters to voice.
    the power of a gem
The Goddess Aphrael has revealed herself and Sparhawk has the Bhelliom. with the quest almost over and the tool needed to restore his queen to health you might think that the story is almost done.
But the restoration of Queen Ehlana to full health is just the start. with Martel and Annias working together to put Annias on the throne of the church Sparhawk has a few loose ends to tie up.
what Sparhawk does not know is that the loose ends will end with one of his most dangerous and deadly quests.
hopeless sieges, love, political battles, and death of a beloved character will conclude this trilogy with a great adventure and a super surprising ending. a must listen and a instant love
    Fairly good
Eddings fantasies are very good and well told. He relies too much on the deus ex machina for a final resolution. My real problem is the presentation. The reader, director and editor of these stories need to spend more time with a dictionary studying the pronunciation of a good many words. It grates on my ears when so many words are mispronounced.
Great story, narration got in the way.
I've been a fan of these books for years, they've become old friends.
When listening to familiar titles, you expect your take on the story and the narration not to match perfectly. In this case, the narration was so far off it got in the way of the story.
It's far enough off to me that I know I'll never listen to them again. I'd much rather sit down a read the stories myself.
    Awsome
Would you consider the audio edition of The Sapphire Rose to be better than the print version?
Can;t say I did not read the books
Which character as performed by Greg Abby was your favorite?
All where very good and easy to follow but Kirik was my favorite I cried when he died
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could have I would have, I enjoyed the entire series very much
    Any additional comments?
I completely got into the story from beginning to end, if a book can make me feel all the emotions of a good movie it is very good in my opinion.

    minor irritants, otherwise loved it
I enjoyed listening to this book again (have read it before), but the narration became irritating to me when the narrator tried to pitch his voice higher to read the women's voices- he just couldn't carry it off. It sounds better reading it all straight. Also, I noticed a few mispronunciations- earlier in the book, Menolly was pronounced with the emphasis on the second syllable, whereas later in the book, it was emphasized on the first. I have read it with the pronunciation on the first syllable (in MY head). I noticed it with one or two other names, also. It makes me wonder, do the readers find out from the authors how to pronouce certain names, or just wing it?
    missing audio
Where does The Skies of Pern rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks among the top 40 of the books I have listened to.
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Skies of Pern?
When Golanth gets back into the sky with the help of the other dragons.
Which character as performed by Dick Hill was your favorite?
It is a tie between Tai and her dragon. Unfortunately there were too many times where the voice of F'lessan changed too much.
    Any additional comments?
there is some audio missing towards the end. it skips from the middle of a sentence to the middle of another that I know very well having read the book multiple times.
    Not My Favorite
I SO wanted to give this book five stars. Five stars because I miss Anne McCaffrey and she showed a different way to depict women in science fiction. Five Stars because I got to go back to Pern and enjoy the dragons and dolphins. But I just couldn't.
Had I read this a long while ago when my eyes were still good, I might have given a higher rating. I wouldn't have had to listen to the narrator, Dick Hill's version of the story. Ugh! He makes all the women sound like weak whiners. Even Lessa, who is supposed to be a strong leader, Mr. Hill diminishes with his vocal characterization. But there was no text-to-speech so I was stuck with his voice. And there is no loanability for these books. What the Heck! Poor people want to read, too!
But maybe Dick was only working with what was there? Did our dear Ms. McCaffrey write the book with the male heaviness I felt? I just wasn't happy with how it progressed. It took me much longer to read, just because it didn't pull at me like, say, her Harper Hall books did. Okay. I did read most of this series about twenty-four years ago. Whew! That is a long time ago!
It was only near the end of reading this book that I realized that this was the last solo book of the series. I will now have to look up the continuation written with her son, Todd or those he wrote alone.
