Wait for the entire series to come out

I would have given this book a 4 star rating and maybe a 4.5 if that existed if it wasn't for the ending of this book. Granted, I know the author wanted to leave the reader with a cliffhanger but to stop mid action and declare end of story? If you are like me and need some sort of resolution, then wait for the series to be completed. At this writing there is a second book but ends in the same manner. I really did enjoy the story but to be honest, I feel a bit cheated - like the author lacked the confidence I would buy his next book unless he left the reader hanging mid air. That way he could be assured I'd buy the next book just so I could get resolution to the story.

Wait! Huh? What?

At first I took this audiobook for pulp si-fi and intended to listen with a modicum of disinterest as I went through my daily rituals, ear buds dangling in their usual position. Then, as the penultimate battle approached, I went into serious listener mode. 'This is going to be good,' I thought. Not!

The book ends without resolution and in the middle of a space battle where tactics (human) are pitted against overwhelming numbers (alien). What happened? Who knows? You have to buy the second book.

Unlike Jack Campbell, who resolves the dilemma before setting up a new one for readers to ponder, McGinnis churns pulp like an episode of "Orange is the New Black." Want to know what happenstough luck buddyspend another credit.

Wellnot meI am returning this wholly unsatisfying example of churn.

Great premise, poorly realized

What did you like about this audiobook?

Terrific concept. It harks back to the juvenile novels of the fifties and the young man who achieves space flight via a home made space ship or one discovered left by a long lost Alien civilization.

How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?

It has made me want tom reread the Andre Norton Forerunner series.

Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?

Writing is very poor. People just don't think or talk the way the author depicts them.

What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?

He had a rough row to hoe making poor writing sound good.

Military Sci Fi Fans Rejoice!

If you could sum up Gehenna Dawn in three words, what would they be?

A solid audiobook

What was one of the most memorable moments of Gehenna Dawn?

Jake Taylor stumbles upon a seriously wounded private. The internal and spoken dialogue was truly gut wrenching. This jaded pessimist, i.e. yours truly, stopped what he was doing and that unfocused stare kicked in, a stare that signals "this is a solid piece of narration - stop and listen!" I had another such experience later when a 12 megaton warhead of life changing realization is detonated in Taylor's lap.

Which scene was your favorite?

This audiobook is loaded with several exceptional scenes that trying to pick one does not give it justice. No joke, if you are a fan of military science fiction, and have gotten tired of trying to slog through yet another 34 hour audiobook that you thought would justify your $$$ and time spent only to suffer through hours of exhaustive backstory about some crybaby's "lost early teenage years" on some drab minor space colony; or, after 8 hours of meandering nothingness about the rather unremarkable life histories of the 14 main and secondary characters, someone finally pulls out a f....cking weapon or the enemy finally hoves into view, this book will restore your faith in the genre.

Jay Allen wrote a gem of a story.

Good Egan Hard SF story near ruined by the narator

What did you like best about The Clockwork Rocket? What did you like least?

As with other works by Egan, it's an excellent exploration of scientific ideas & "what if" physics thought-experiments in story form.

What other book might you compare The Clockwork Rocket to and why?

Other work by Egan? Otherwise Egan's works are difficult to find direct comparisons for.

How could the performance have been better?

The narrator has an extremely monotonous pattern to his speech. Nearly all non-dialog is spoken in the exact same pattern of intonation and emphasis on words & phrases. As though he decided that every 4th work would have higher intonation & emphasis, no matter it's actual use or importance in the sentence. Dialog isn't much better, with character voices that sound almost universally to be whining or sad.

Was The Clockwork Rocket worth the listening time?

If you're a fan of Egans work, then yes; Otherwise, the narration is likely to turn off listeners, possibly even other fans of Egan.

Noble Math to the rescue; plot & characters follow

This novel follows the familiar formula that Egan fans delight in: an alien hero works out fundamental physics to defend his/her/its species in a race against impending cataclysm from natural forces that are not, initially, well understood. Here, the greatest stylistic twist is that there is no counterpoint perspective from a more familiar human or near-human protagonist, nor indeed, any additional first-person characters. The story is told in a sequence of episodes from the lifetime a single creature, our protagonist Yalda. Her planet and species are never named, being alone in their perceived cosmos, so Ill call them Orthogonals in reference to the unique premise that the story stems from. I cant do any justice to the carefully described mathematics provided at every step of the heros journey, but can summarize by saying that her pocket universe has a different, orthogonal geometry from our own, and Egan has extrapolated this to invent a marvelous and internally consistent set of physics for her to discover along with the reader.

The novels theme is also a familiar one: The triumphant of applied science and nobility of those who practice its careful pursuit.

You Want To Put A What... Where?

Where does Parasite rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

It was a compelling listen. I would hold off ranking it until I've completed the series.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did even thought the writing seemed to get boggy in the middle part of the story and seemed repetitive. Overall it held my attention from start to finish. The premise is interesting, if extremely creepy. A genetically modified parasite becomes a wildly sought after medical device. It does everything from dispensing vitamins to managing diabetes to curing cancer. All from inside the human body once implanted. But then this microscopic miracle "rebels" and people start to "sleep walk". And worse.

Any additional comments?

A word of caution: this is apparently the first in a series. The story by no means ends here.

A Refreshing New Spin on the Zombie Genre

I've been stuck in a book rut for a while now. I was hesitant when I read the reviews on this book, and series. It's been in my wish list for a while, but it's a female narrator (I prefer male) and a questionable story line.

I'm glad I took the leap. Just a few short chapters in, I was full of joy I've found a (new to me) author to follow! The story line is very well done and 'Mira Grant' does a fantastic job of giving enough detail, while at the same time not drolling on. You can't help but become caught up in this book.

Other positive notes:

*It's a good long book. I like long books when they're done right. This one is done right.

*Christine Lakin does a great job with the narration!

*The book leaves you wanting more

Only Negative: I've finished book 2 and was not as impressed with it. However, book one could stand on it's own fairly well. Book 1 does not tie up all the lose ends, or bring you to a great conclusion, but I could have walked away after book 1 and been okay with it.

Book two does leave you hanging. I haven't decided yet if I'll be in for book 3 when it comes out, or not.

I don't even like horror, but....

I wasn't sure I'd like this one, but Mira Grant (Seanan McGuire) delivered yet again.

Great sequel!

I found the first book of this series to be engaging and original, a dystopia that stood above many other books of the same genre. I anticipated the sequel and now that I've listened to the whole book almost nonstop, it doesn't disappoint. There are many poignant moments, especially the ending. I found it to be both hopeful and devastating, which is a running trend throughout the book - you're happy the character has survived one more close call, but you just know that in the background the world is changing irreparably. By the way, if you haven't read the first book, I suggest you do before listening to the sequel, or otherwise some situations won't make as much sense. I can't see how there could be a third book in this series, though, the ending felt quite definite, which is kind of sad. The narrator does a great job!

Seduced by the plot, and I feel so cheap.

What disappointed you about Exodus?

That the book version wasn't at my library. If I'd been reading, rather than listening, I would have been able to speed-read through all the dull bits.

Any additional comments?

Despite my misgivings, I wanted to find out what happened next, and I downloaded book two. I'm nearly done, but have lost all patience with the thing--so deliberately sought out spoilers just to find out how the story ends without having to listen to another damn minute. And now I'm REALLY glad I did because the ending is unforgivably trite.

Hmmmm

I'm all for a good end of the world story, but I found myself zoning out during this one. Waiting for Emily (I'm assuming you know her from the first book) to get through another impossible scenario, after making another incredibly naive or thoughtless decision, was a little like reaching for the hot stove over and over again. I hope she gets a little smarter, is she's the new gene pool. Admittedly, I've already downloaded the next book and will finish it, but really....

There are a lot of details the reader could do without. Maybe a little more character development and a little less of how Emily finds her next screwdriver would serve us better. Make us care wether humanity survives!

In my defense, I was curious!

Enjoyable/creative. Not a grand historical vista.

Different and enjoyable.

Not particularly complex. I.e. this is more about the idea, and the people executing it than any grand historical perspective on a group of people tweaking history.

Excellent Performance of an Excellent Book

What a double pairing with both the writers and the performers. Let's start with the writers. Brust and White play off each other like they'd been writing together for years. I haven't read any of Skyler's other works yet but I will. I've been listening to Steven's Vlad series for a couple of months now so just a few minutes into TI I was thinking "this is really different". I find myself looking at current events and wondering if a group similar to the Incrementalists had a meddle in it.

We've all listened to audio books where the reader is sadly only that. Ray Porter and Mary Robinette Kowal PERFORM this book. The delivery is wonderful and consistent.

There are so many layers to what's going on I know I'm going to listen to this book again.

I Wanted More "Meddling"

The Incrementalists authors had a great concept but I would have liked more "meddling' (changing the feelings & beliefs of one person at a time). Sadly the book spent more time on a mystery surrounding a member and a love story instead of what drew me in to purchasing the book: "They cheat death, share lives and memories, and communicate with one another across nations, races, and time.

EGO AGAINST ID

MESMERIC INFLAMED DISK OF THE SPECTRAL SUN

This is the kind of book most editors and academia love. Nothing wrong with that, but if your just a regular Joe like me, you would like a plot. The language is beautiful and it is fun to daydream about this type of world. The first hour fulfilled that and it was great. To go from a poem to a novel, I need characters, a plot and something happening. This book had none of that. It was just a reaction to the watered world.

Prophetic story about climate change

One of Ballard's smaller-scale novels, though I believe it is linked to a series of books with similar, environmentally themed stories. Amazing that he foresaw how important climate change would be, years before most people had even heard of the idea.

The writing of this thoughtful, psychological novel is very high quality, and I enjoyed listening to it, especially as read by the narrator. His pace and inflection are perfect, and the accents that he created for the dialogue are amazing. It's really a performance, not just a reading.

Lyrical, strange, lovely, haunting

This was one of the more unusual books I have ever read. Most science fiction tends to be focused on a scientific idea, which the author extrapolates out to the future to examine what the repercussions of this idea might be. Usually the repercussions examined are societal, or governmental, or even economic. But in this book, the repercussions are entirely personal. In about two short sentences, Ballard quickly dispenses with the science, explaining that there were some sun spots, these made the sun get hotter, all the ice on the Earth has melted, the continents have been drowned and all that is left of mankind is living near the north pole. The rest of the book follows various characters as they react to this new world, each in their own way, although all seem to be quite mad. Playing with the idea that Jurassic weather would bring up Jurassic memories from deep within the human brain, the author does a terrific job depicting how the hallucinogenic dreams and uterine longings of each character mesmerize them and draw them ever further into the growing jungle.

Excellent Per Normal

Golemon is an excellent storyteller. The Event series is a phenomenal series. It has everything I love. Great action, well developed characters, humor, mystery and so much more. Every book in the series keeps me fully engaged from start to finish.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

OK this book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time! I will continue to listen to this author if the rest of his books are as amazing as this one! I love the twists that he used on actual events in history, and gave them purpose! That is awesome! I now of course NEED MORE of this book as I feel I really know the characters and want to see how the rest of the story goes! excellent work!!!

New to the Series? Don't Start Here

I was listening to this book and it occurred to me that someone who had not been following the Foreigner series would probably be totally lost. So I would urge anyone who is interested in this book to go to the first volume in the set and read forward. I have found a lot of pleasure in reading these books over the years but the worlds and cultures created by Cherryh are complex and full of concepts that may require a glossary and a character list for first time readers.

We are back on the home world of the atevi. The son of the ruler of the Western Association, Cajeiri, is approaching his ninth birthday. The number nine in this culture as particular significance. His father has agreed to allow him to have a visit from three of his human friends from the space station. But, as usual where the atevi (and the humans) are concerned there is a witches brew of politics. And in the middle of it is Bren Cameron, the translator/diplomat whose tenure has seen the most incredible changes in the human/atevi interface.

the narrator is also quite good with consistent pronunciation of the many unusual words and names used.

A great entry into the Foreigner universe. I have read and reread this books for years, and have always enjoyed the political back and forth throughout these books. The wonderful points of view, Bren and Cajieri's lives are always interesting and fraught with danger. Illsidi with her sharp wit and distinctive rap of her cane.

My problem with Mrs. C.J. Cherryh is she seems to be retconning the story in these latter books. For example, all of a sudden the reasons for the mission to Reunion Station seems to have changed or peoples motivations shift. Its is slightly jarring to find things from the earlier trilogies that were set down in print seem not to apply anymore. I understand changing things here and there to keep the flow even and not have two or three chapter of "What Has Come Before" exposition, but some of it almost seems lazy writing.

Don't misunderstand this series is one of my all time favorites.

Excellent prelude to subsequent adventures.

I have read this series many times and have always enjoyed it immensely. The first book is the most entertaining but each has its own charm.

Where does Lilith: A Snake in the Grass rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is the first of 4 books about the crazy Warden Diamond worlds. The series is an interesting look at alternate worlds with crazy natural properties for each world.

This series has long been one of my favorites and I've read the books many times. The audiobook version is a great addition to my Library. The narrator grew on me as I listened and by the end of the book, is now the voice that I hear when I think of the books. My only real complaint is that the narrator pronounces one of the main character's names two different ways throughout the book. This should have been edited before release.

Good book.
