Chapters only numbered.

Excellent recording of classic Brothers Grimm stories in German. Unfortunately chapters only numbered and unable to find titles anywhere. Perhaps this is general format. Either way it's an important piece of information that is integral to any book wether printed or recorded.

Title: Beowulf

Author: Julian Glover

Narrator: Julian Glover

Format: Abridged

Length: 1 hr and 14 mins

Language: English

Release date: 11-16-15

Publisher: silksoundbooks Limited

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 13 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

The epic story of this heros battle against dragons, monsters, and their mothers is particularly suited to being recorded as an audiobook given that for the first 300 years of its existence it was only ever spoken.

The first known (and indeed the only surviving manuscript) of the poem was written in AD 1,000. It survived Henry VIIIs attempts to destroy it (as a religious artifact) and a catastrophic fire that destroyed many other historical British documents - the marks of the fire are still visible on the manuscript, now safely housed in the British Museum.

But the poem and indeed its mythical original tale date back to the eighth or ninth century and before that to the mythologies of Scandaniavia. It is because this poem is in itself an adaptation of ancient sagas that we have allowed ourselves the only abridgement or adaptation on the website!

Julian Glovers version takes the poem back to its origins as a spoken tale. He has taken the essence of the poem and, with a scholarly eye to the British Museums manuscript, created a truly bardic performance. Beowulfs battles against Grendel (the monster who takes you in your sleep) and the original lethal female, his mother, who comes to avenge her sons killing, are faithfully transformed from their singed original to a roaring reality.

Wonderful performance

Yes, it's abridged, but it's abridged intelligently and with an eye to the story and to the art of storytelling. I've only listened to it once, but it immediately became one of my two favorite versions (the other being George Guidall's reading of the Seamus Heaney translation). Julian Glover tells the story with passion and wit, dropping in a few phrases in Old English here and there, truly creating the sense of a bard reciting the story to a group of people sitting around a fire in the meadhall. The text, Glover tells us in an epilogue, is based on a Penguin edition, though he doesn't say which one; since he's been doing it onstage for years, presumably it's the prose version by David Wright from the late 50s. It's the whole story, right through the tale of the dragon and (***spoilers***) Beowulf's death. A fine piece of work, something I hope to listen to many times in the years ahead.

Brilliant Beowulf

I now have 5 versions of Beowulf and while all have something of merit, for a streamlined version trimming out the lineage of kings and battles etc. which always stop people from enjoying it all, this is wonderful. there is a short youtube clip "Julian Glover reads Beowulf" performing the Grendel/Beowulf fight which gives a great sense of the fireside "scop" performing the tale to guests. this is his complete performance material which is awesome, with a few Old English words and phrases tossed in which give again a great sense of the alliterative nature and cadence of the original. I would listen to him do an unabridged reading of the entire work with some OE. There are some wonderful lines and phrases in this translation that I've not heard before in the other 4 i've got. I look forward to listening to all 5 together.

Title: Les Misérables

Author: Victor Hugo

Narrator: Christopher Cazenove

Format: Abridged

Length: 2 hrs and 48 mins

Language: English

Release date: 07-01-15

Publisher: Blackstone Audio, Inc.

Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 4 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

Set in the Parisian underworld and plotted like a detective story, Les Misérables follows Jean Valjean, originally an honest peasant, who has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing a loaf of bread to feed his sister's starving family. A hardened criminal upon his release, he eventually reforms, becoming a successful industrialist and town mayor. Despite this, he is haunted by an impulsive former crime and is pursued relentlessly by the police inspector, Javert.

Hugo describes early 19th-century France with a sweeping power that gives his novel epic stature. Among the most famous chapters are the account of the battle of Waterloo and Valjean's flight through the Paris sewers.

Titre: Nouvelles orientales

Auteur: Marguerite Yourcenar

Narrateur: Christian Gonon

Format: Unabridged

Durée: 2 hrs and 38 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 06-02-15

Éditeur: Gallimard

Evaluation: 4.5 sur 5 sur 4 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

The long view.

Like the previous reviewer, I have bought this book no less than five times, sharing it when the opportunity arises. I was introduced to this book in an advanced grammar class. Yourcenar's writing is succinct yet poetic, and her finely woven tales have created a psychological impact that will always be part of me. This may be the most carefully crafted book that I have ever read, English or French. Every time I read it, I'm surprised at how essential each detail is to the story, and at how well each event contributes to the overall tone. Each story depicts a unique relationship and reflects on the tattered fabric of humanity.

Light Reading for Yourcenar Fans

Early Yourcenar first published in 1938, revised 1978. Read it for the pleasure, for curiosity or for the author's exploration of the subject matter - or all three. There are ten parts to the collection, which are neither short stories, nor portraits of the personalities; I call them explorations, Yourcenar prefers "legends". Read the original French if you understand the language; so much is lost of her command and style in translation.

Five Stars

Excellent récit épuré, belle langue comme toujours..

one of the greatest 20th century writers has some fun

Marguerite Yourcenar's Orient stretches from China and Japan to former Yugoslavia... I have only read this book in French, and doubt that a translation should even be attempted, since in all her books, the beauty of language is the most striking quality. Here, she retells a few Oriental tales, or legends, or imagines how they could have continued, from the point they were left off. Each and every story is a jewel, and they all share a deeply ironic, while also deeply sympathetic, and totally unsentimental, streak - typical of M.Y. I always felt that she had enormous fun playing around with these stories, chiseling them, deepening their shading, highlighting a color here, one there. I bought this copy for a friend who hadn't read any of her books. (Probably the 6th copy I buy...)

Stories you will never forget!

This collection of stories is fascinating. I loved Yourcenar's vivid descriptions and intriguing characters. Great read; great literature.

Title: The Country Doctor

Author: Franz Kafka

Narrator: Glenn Hascall

Format: Unabridged

Length: 15 mins

Language: English

Release date: 04-09-15

Publisher: Spoken Realms

Ratings: 5 of 5 out of 5 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature

Publisher's Summary:

An odd but well-loved short story following steps into madness. A country doctor has had more work than he can handle, and the stress seems to have taken him to a place that seems as at home in nightmares as in the madness of an overworked mind. Kafka's work often lends itself to the turmoil of the human mind. In this respect the story does not fail to impress.

Narrated by Glenn Hascall.

? Pirate copy?

This appears to be an illegitimate copy. The copyrights aren't present, known of the usual publisher information. The typeset unusual. The cover says three stories but it contains only 2. The Hunger Artist is not contained in this book. The country doctor story is printed twice and the 2nd time is mislabeled as the Hinger Artist.

Would not recommend this copy.

It arrived quickly and was in good condition but did not contain the stories it claimed.

Titre: Le côté de Guermantes (À la recherche du temps perdu 3)

Auteur: Marcel Proust

Narrateur: Daniel Mesguich

Format: Abridged

Durée: 4 hrs and 55 mins

Langue: Français

Date de publication: 02-19-15

Éditeur: Frémeaux & Associés

Evaluation: 5 sur 5 sur 7 votes

Genres: Classics, European Literature
