    Publisher's Summary:
The irresistible power of money, a lever that can lift the world. Love and money are the only things.
Aristide Rougon, known as Saccard, is a failed property speculator determined to make his way once more in Paris. Unscrupulous, seductive, and with unbounded ambition, he schemes and manipulates his way to power. Financial undertakings in the Middle East lead to the establishment of a powerful new bank and speculation on the stock market; Saccard meanwhile conducts his love life as energetically as he does his business, and his empire is seemingly unstoppable.
Saccard, last encountered in The Kill (La Curée) in Zola's Rougon-Macquart series, is a complex figure whose story intricately intertwines the worlds of politics, finance, and the press. The repercussions of his dealings on all levels of society resonate disturbingly with the financial scandals of more recent times. This is the first new translation for more than 100 years, and the first unabridged translation in English. The edition includes a wide-ranging introduction and useful historical notes.

    A forgotten gem
Wall Street shenanigans are nothing new. Zola wrote about the French equivalent in 1891. Zola's works stand the test of time and it's a shame he is read so little today. Saccard is deliciously bad. You can't help liking him just for his shear mendacity and financial chutzpah. A 19th c. version of Bernie Madoff . Napolean Ryan is perfect as a narrator every bit as brilliant with character voice as Fredrick Davidson.
    Old School Bernie Madoff!
Amazing book about the rise and fall of a Madoff's great-great-great-great-great French grandfather! The greatest lesson we can learn from history is that history repeats itself and if we don't learn from the past then we are destined to repeat it.

    Not His Best Work
IMO not F.D'.s best work by a long shot. Skip this one if you have not yet read C & P or the Brothers K. Far superior to N.N. I would also place the Idiot ahead of N.N.
    Unforgettable Characters!
This is an unfinished novel which features some unforgettable character portraits. I'm thinking escpecially of Nitochka's step-father who is as memorable as any character ever created by Dostoyevsky. It is well worth reading even though it was unfinished because of Dostoyevsky's arrest for translating a banned book into the russian language. Dostoyevsky is often too wordy in all of his novels but he is still my favorite author because his novels are so compelling, his characters so real and his writing so beautiful and so hard to stop reading. If you haven't read Dostoyevsky (also spelled Dostoevsky) you may not want to start with this novel. I would start, as I did start a long time ago, with Crime And Punishment.
In defense of the third part
I am not in the habit of writing reviews, but I feel compelled to respond to the many negative comments regarding the third part of the story, which I regard as the best.
There is perhaps some merit to the claim that the last section lacks some of the polish and relative coherence of the rest of the book, but I don't regard this as a real deficiency. These very features help the reader experience some of the same doubt, uncertainty, and ungroundedness that is experienced and depicted by the narrator Netochka. This makes the final section feel especially vivid and alive.
The personalities of three main characters of the third section are all artfully depicted. The depiction of the husband is especially masterful. The letter is also brilliant, and seems to hint at times of the style, if not the substance, of Notes from Underground. Generally, this section seems to presage Dostoevsky's later masterworks more than the rest of the book. I wish he had been able to finish the novel, but the brilliant fragments to be found in this text make it well worth reading.
Dostoevsky never ceases to amaze, and this book is no exception
Dostoevsky never ceases to amaze, and this book is no exception. No words with how in awe I am of this story.

    Publisher's Summary:
During the Civil War, five Union soldiers and a dog quietly escape from the clutches of the Confederate Army at Richmond, Virginia by hot air balloon. Their intention was to simply drift safely over to the Union lines and rejoin their own troops. Instead, while aloft, they were caught in a high wind and whisked hundreds of miles out to sea. The men carried no provisions for survival and had no idea where they were. Under those circumstances their future was bleak. Worse yet, the balloon was leaking air and slowly deflating. As the balloon made its slow descent from the sky, the men were fortunate to spot an island in the distance. As the balloon dropped lower and lower it also drifted closer to the island. When the basket hit the sea, the partially deflated balloon dragged it violently across the surface and scattered the men among the waves. The men were able to swim to their only refuge...the mysterious island. At first the island was accomodating, but then it became more mysterious as unusual and strange happenings occured. Something deep in the depths of the island seemed to have control...something mysterious and unidentifiable....

    Old school still interesting
Great tale, with unexpected cameo appearance.
I especially enjoyed the narrator's characterizations. Ready for more.
    the book is great but...
absolutely love the book! the narration on the other hand was a bit irritating at times. I'm not sure if he was too near the mic, but it was loud and almost as if he were spitting in the mic. There is also an echo that confused me because the echo came after what was spoken but the content was what was about to be spoken so it was ahead of the narrator.
Loved the movie so decided to try this . . .
This is not the Harryhausen movie at all but I really enjoyed it too. Dreaming of being on a deserted island is just that. This book has all the hard work it would take not just to survive but to thrive. I got to labor along with them and learn how it could be done. Wow! What an adventure! Incredible wildlife including animals and pirates. A lesson on life and redemption. Loved the narration too. Long and satisfying.
    Fantastic Story
What made the experience of listening to The Mysterious Island the most enjoyable?
The listening experience had its ups and downs. In particular often times while listening there appeared to be some type of background noise by the performer.
What other book might you compare The Mysterious Island to and why?
It was such an incredible story I really can't compare it to anything else.
Which character as performed by Gene Engene was your favorite?
    All the characters were terrific.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The problem solving in the book was exceptional to think how long ago this was written. An absolute treasure of a book.
    Felt Like A Classic
The narrator does an excellent job, the story is refreshing and keeps interest. Well worth.

    Publisher's Summary:
First published in 1766 and a perennial favorite since then, The Vicar of Wakefield is built around the naïve but loveable figure of Dr Primrose. He and his family live in rural bliss until disaster threatens to destroy their happiness: abduction, impoverishment, and betrayal combine to lay them low, but a surprising figure brings hope when all seems lost.
    Members Reviews:
    Well narrated classic novel
The Vicar of Wakefield is a delightful book (from the late 18th or early 19th century), by Oliver Goldsmith (here narrated by Nicolas Farrell) that has held up as an engaging melodrama over a couple of centuries. The story concerns the Rev. Doctor Primrose and his family as they go from fortune to ruin, from living well to living precariously--typical of many stories of that time. If it seems a little predictable to us now, I suspect it was cherished by those who were reading it for the first time.
The story shows Rev. Primrose having to find ways to manage one crisis after another--whether losing his income, having his daughter fall into a bad situation, or people who are not what they seem. Throughout it all, he appears always to hold on to his optimism, indeed, others have likened him to (the Book of) Job in the Bible. Although less sophisticated than most of what we read these days, the story still is a good listen--and a reminder of what kind of stories used to excite an audience. (And by the way, there is much to take from it for our current times as well--certain human characteristics don't change that much). There is good tension among the characters, and certainly everything moves quickly--from one dilemma to the next. The Rev. Primrose and other characters are like the players in many novels of the time, in that they are, for the most part, rather two-dimensional.
Nicolas Farrell has done a very good job of bringing a fresh reading to us--and that is easily one of the best parts of this recording. If you are just yearning to have a fun read from the classics, this is quite good.
    Hohum
Not much if you compare it to a dickens or a Trollope And the reader was beyond tiresome
    Excellant Audiobook
This is an unexpected treat. Was not too sure if I should buy it, now very glad I did. I like stories of the past, anything from 12th C to 19th C. They give you a sense of how people thought, morals, & society in general.
Too many areas of the story to pin down to one specific moment. So much of interest happening in this.
Nicholas Farrell's calm melodious narration is why this book works for me. He takes you through the story in a good clear voice , with enough variation in tone to smoothly keep you interested to the very end.
    Genuine feel good story
    BEWARE plot spoilers.
This book is at times very funny, and at others very sad. The titular Vicar and his family descend from good standing and wealth, to near poverty. They lose their children's reputations to wicked seducers, other children to death, nearly all perish when their house is burned to the ground, get swindled regularly by tricksters, and end up in a debtors prison. However at the end, all is restored, and more, with even a dead child coming back to life! The vicar 'narrates' the book, so all opinions are given via him, showing his thoughts about his wife, his situation etc with a slightly skewed but funny view point.
