    Truly a classic!
What a great work of fiction. Feeling ashamed that I had never read this novel but heard so much about it, I finally got a copy and burned through the pages in 3 days. It certainly lived up to its name and legacy. The writing is to the point, Hemingway-esque, and rarely slows. Every fifth paragraph leaves one a jewel phrase or entire sentence that can qualify as a memorable quote. For example: "What do they expect of us if a time ever comes when this war is over? Through the years our business has been killing;--it was our first calling in life. Our knowledge of life is limited to death. What will happen afterwards? And what shall come of us?"
In my opinion, the Nazis burned Remarque's books not because he changed his name to a non-German name, but because this book is filled with anti-war sentiment cloaked as it had to be in 1928 when this was first published. To have lived through war in the trenches as Remarque did, qualifies him to speak to the insanity of mass killing that is war.
Let us all read his pages and imbibe the message of the cruelty and senselessness of war. I feel as if I want to go out and obtain a copy of every book Remarque ever published. Let his experience be our teacher; let his message endure. Let every school-kid in the world read and study these pages, so they come to know what war is. Let the decision-makers of the world pore over every passage, and ask themselves whether they will send their children to war. Let Remarque's works guide their decision.
    Truly a classic.
    Insight to war
The character, Paul, gives us insight to the thoughts of our "enemy", was he an enemy or was he another young man caught up in the excitement of war, which would change as he faced death and destruction. Too often we look at war from only our perspective, this book caused me to realize that our enemy is not the foe we face in war, rather our enemy lies within ourselves and our senseless disregard for all of our brothers.
    Really meaningful book
We saw men with their skull blasted open. Man who ran with his two feet cut off, they staggered with their splintered stomps onto the next shell hole. A lance corporal crawls a mile and a half on his smashed knees after him. We saw man in the dressing station and over his clapsed hand who has held bulge his intestines. We saw men without mouth, jaw and faces. The sun and the moon rises, shells wine and life ends
    Good read
Interesting read to get another perspective and then compare to today's military issues and stories, somethings are more alike than not. The reviews for this book for the most part are on target.

Absolutely a great book, written long ago and full of dialogue
What can you say. Absolutely a great book, written long ago and full of dialogue. One of my favorites.
    Five Stars
    I really like it.
    Love this story
I have always enjoyed The Man in the Iron Mask by Dumas. The made for television version with Richard Chamberlain is one of my favorites. Reading this can be different from our more modern writers but the imagery and the way it is told is really something to take your time with and enjoy like a fine wine or delicious French dessert. This was delivered to my Kindle without any problems and I have spent many hours reading and re-reading one of my favorites. Thanks Kindle.
Read the whole saga, not just this book.
One of the greatest stories ever, by one of the greatest authors ever, and one of the best things I have ever read. And I have read a lot. Yes, there are typos in the text that were slightly annoying, but it did not in the least diminish the brilliance of Dumas' writing. If you think you are going to get the stories portrayed on film, you will soon be disabused of that idea. You will get so much more. I am still in awe of this literary masterpiece, meaning the entire epic from start to finish.
    Great, nothing else to say
What is there to say but bravo. Read all five books in order with this being the last and you will never regret the time you spent with d`Artagnan in Dumas's wonderful world (normal English translations split the third book in three with this being the last book of those). One of the best examples of historical fiction I have read and it is highly recommended.

Review On The Narrator, The Book Is A Classic
    Any additional comments?
The best audio book I've ever listened to. My first experience with Michael Page. His voices for both male and female characters is great. There are so many characters in this book that it takes great skill to provide a different imaginary image for all of them. If Page had a limited amount of voices this book would have been lame. But he was a great narrator and I definitely looking forward to future books narrated by him.

    Evaluation: 4.5 sur 5 sur 8 votes
    Genres: Classics, European Literature

    Genres: Classics, European Literature

Great book but atypical format for hardcover disrupts reading flow
Candide is an excellent story, a concise yet conceptually soaring diatribe that unblinkingly lampoons the stigmas and realities of Voltaires time. The book is packed with scenarios that will make you laugh and cringe at once. I give four stars because the formatting on the hardcover book is a bit weird due to extra spaces in between paragraphs. This extra spacing disrupts the flow of reading and seems as if the publisher was trying to make the book more pages than it actually warranted with respect to the typical font and format of a novel or novella.
The best of all possible reviews
I decided to revisit this book after almost 40 years since my high school French class. It's amazing what reading it again after such a long time does for your perspective. Glad I picked it up again.
    Satirical Genius
Voltaire is a satirical genius, he leaves few stones unturned in this short novel. The critical responses are useful resources if you have to write a report for the book or need further insight into Voltaires mind.
    A quick witty romp!
What a fun read! I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is relatively short and moves quickly, so it's great if you want something witty without much commitment.
    hilarious
This book is a combination of genius, logical argument and humor. It is definitely hilarious. I laughed so hard as I read this book that i had never before. I highly recommend this book. it makes you think about the world around you and the people and their sufferings yet you only laugh at it. It does not make you sad.

    A classic
I'd read "Die schwarze Spinne" in school, back in the day, and thought it would be fun to read it again. It was, though I'd forgotten that 20% of the novella is devoted not to the actual story, but to describing a child's baptism in Gotthelf's time and the idiosyncrasies of society. It's historically and sociologically interesting, and will still get wry smiles from modern readers who recognize themselves or their great-aunts in some of those characters, but editors today would have cut it mercilessly.
As is usual with Gotthelf, once the story gets moving, it's a compelling narrative. Unlike his longer works, this novella works as a fable, disguised as the history of way-back-when, but those extra 20% make Gotthelf's point that the threat isn't gone in our day. Sumiswald - the setting - is a real town that still exists today, but as to the historical accuracy of the names mentioned in the story I have no idea.
It's a pretty quick read, well written, quirky, and appropriately creepy for a deal-with-the-devil story.

Interesting story and representative of the time and location
I read this on a long flight and had a hard time putting it down. It reminds me of an old, scary, fairytale. There is a central religious/superstitious theme with a good story, plus an interesting window on the way the world looked to people at that time and place. Was a bit slow to get started but worth it.
