    Welcome Irene
I've been waiting years for Jan Burke's books to be released on audio. A wonderful surprise and I wasn't disapointed. Goodnight Irene on audio was as good as the read. The reader is introduced to Irene Kelly, newspaper reporter, and supporting characters including her detective husband to be, Frank. The locale is a southern California beach town. The pace of Goodnight Irene sometimes slows, but as the series goes on, the books only get tighter and faster paced. The narrator is good, could turn into a favorite of mine. If you've never read Jan Burke, give Goodnight Irene a try. Well worth the credit spent and the time listening.
    First time reading Jan Burke
I liked this story and I will try more from Jan Burke, but it was very perdictable. I knew "who done it" way to soon in the story. I actually found this book by looking up Eliza Foss after I listened to her narration of the Mermaid Chair. She has a voice you can just sit back and enjoy. I will definately give another Irene Kelly Novel a listen to. This was number one so I think they will only get better and they don't have far to go I really did enjoy this book.

    Publisher's Summary:
Taking an early retirement from the NYPD, Sid Shale has moved into a shabby beach house to devote his time to painting. His artistic career is looking bright: a wealthy Texan is interested in one of Sid's pricier works. But suddenly, the quiet beach community is rocked by the murder of a 16-year-old girl. Since Sid's portfolio contains nude sketches of the victim, soon he is the prime suspect. Sid must struggle to keep his perspective as his search for evidence takes him from glitzy art dealers to gruff off-duty cops.
Narrator Richard Poe infuses the suspense with a full palette of dramatic tension and wry humor. And his adept performance highlights Gordon Cotler's masterful ear for dialogue.

Would be a pleasant read, but...
Has a promising voice, fast and ironic. Interesting angle, immersed in painting world. But even for me, the way the protagonist views every woman as someone to be seduced or if not then an obstacle - including a 16-year-old murder victim - is too disturbing to finish the story and find out whodunit. Like it's written by a teenager imagining how adult men think about women and getting it badly wrong.
    Book and author shows promise-entertaining
Retired New York City police officer Sid Shale moved to a beach house in Long Island, planning to quietly live off of his modest pension and supplementing his income by using his modest talent as an artist to paint and sell his pictures Sid's placid lifestyle is soon destroyed when teenager Cassie Brennan is murdered near the beach house of Misha Sharanov, who has a Shale painting hanging on his restaurant's wall. However, soon the entire village learns that Cassie posed nude for Sid as some of the drawings surface.
Everyone begins to wonder if Sid committed the crime. Concerned about more than just his reputation, Sid begins to investigate the murder of the teen. Even as he digs into the case, Sid's personal life also seems to be unraveling as his ex-wife and daughter place pressure on him to sell more paintings. Sid ponders whether retirement could be any harder than his former life on the vicious streets of New York.
The debut novel of the Sid Shale detective stories shows plenty of promise as a continual series due to the lead protagonist, who is haunted by the interference on his domestic tranquillity by the forces of the outside world (even a year after his retirement, Internal Affairs checks out his "posh" beach house). At times, the story line slows down a bit, but overall ARTIST'S PROOF is an interesting book that will please detective fans who like a slower paced story.
    Harriet Klausner
    Artist's Proof is picture perfect
Gordon Cotler's talent for peopling authentic locales with memorable characters is on full display in his latest mystery novel. He takes you on an intriguing tour that includes a down-scale trattoria in New York's Little Italy, a snooty Manhattan art gallery, a garish nightclub in deepest Brooklyn, and a posh Long Island beach resort. Along the way, you share the hero's trials and triumphs as he confronts a Russian Mafia chieftain, a shaady Texas millionaire, and other free-wheeling types, while struggling to clear himself of a murder charge, sort out the women in his life, and put two children through college.

    Good character development
This is a classic modern english police murder mystery. The hero is the usual fat, grumpy, partly clever, partly stupid detective superintendent aided by a big squad.
Despite the predictability of some elements of the plot I enjoyed the book. Certainly very well read, but also reasonable character development, some reasonable elements of humor and some ideas developed. Worth a listen and I am almost over the line to listening to another by the same author
    A highly enjoyable read
A really enjoyable book. The characters seemed very real and human, and the daily life at the police station convincing. Although I do not know Bath as a city, the descriptions indicated that the author had intimate knowledge of the place, and made one want to explore for oneself!
The plot was original and fascinating, with plenty of twists and turns to keep up one's interest. Beautifully narrated. Definitely recommended.
    Intricate plot
I've enjoyed several of Peter Lovesey's Inspector Daimond novels and was not disappointed by this one. It has all the hall-marks of detective fiction: carefully planned murders, a series of red herrings, a definite motive for the killings revealed near the end of the book and lots of tensions between the members of the police force. Diamond the main character is a bluff, no-nonsense detective with a sad past (no surprise there!) who has a difficult relationship with his boss who is a bit of caricature of an irritable, bossy female who tries to take the credit for successful operations. Despite these character cliches it is a gripping story that keeps you listening.
    Another great story
I absolutely love these detective stories. Peter Diamond is a wonderful character and the plots are great, lots of details and twists. I personally also like the lack of gratuitous violence. My ONLY complaint is the narration. I am working my way through the whole Peter Diamon series and I am on my third narrator. Diamond's characterisation and accent, and those of his colleagues change all the time and I find it slightly confusing and not a little irritating. Such a shame as Peter Lovesey's novels are excellent.
    A bit disappointing
This story is not up to the usual high standard of the previous Peter Diamond series. Good plot but drags and the reader is not great.

The manuscript, detailing Fleming's own involvement in British espionage during World War II, contains evidence that the Duke of Windsor was in a treasonous plot with Hitler - information so confidential that people are willing to kill to continue its secrecy.
As Amy journeys back home with her precious cargo, she finds herself in a race with time to finish reading the manuscript and unlock its dangerous and fascinating secrets and to dodge those who would do anything to prevent them from public knowledge, who would do anything to protect the Windsor name.

    Unbelievable
The details of Ian Fleming's life, whether true or fictional, sustain the story and keep one listening. The vessel for the delivery of the story is poorly developed and not convincing as are those pursuing and supporting her. I was disappointed.
    Thought Provoking
If you could sum up In Secret Service in three words, what would they be?
    Three words? That's funny....NO I Can't.
Loved the book with all the bits and pieces of two worlds meeting. It does fit my belief that Princess Dinana was assasinated and the book explains how. Patricia Cornwall had come up with the same theory. The 007 element is smashing as it flows with much of the newly released data about the Duke and Duchess of Windsor but also with a surprise element having to do with Prince Phillip that is shocking. Is this true? If it is, no wonder the British secret service wanted the book that Ian Fleming leaves behind destroyed at any cost. Try it....you just might like it! I am listening to it for a second time and that is a first!
What other book might you compare In Secret Service to and why?
    No
Have you listened to any of Simon Joness other performances before? How does this one compare?
    No
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
So many as it is a riveting book with that 007 element of excitement.

    Publisher's Summary:
Aptly described as Nancy Drew meets Dirty Harry, Isabel has always lived in the shadow of David, her "perfect" younger brother, a lawyer. Her younger sister, 14-year-old Rae, is addicted to "recreational surveillance" and anything with obscene amounts of sugar, and can be found, when the going gets tough, drowning her sorrows in a soda at Isabel's favorite bar. Rae's namesake, Uncle Ray, routinely disappears on benders the family dubs "Lost Weekends".
When their parents hire Rae to follow Isabel in order to ascertain the identity of a suspected new boyfriend, Isabel snaps and quits the business. That's easier said than done, though, with wiretapping and coercion part of the family dynamic. Her parents make her a deal: solve one last case, the Snow case, and her employment contract with Spellman Inc. will be declared null and void. The kicker: the Snow case is decades old, ice cold, and more twisted than a pretzel. Isabel throws herself headlong into what she thinks is the most crucial case of her life. And then her sister Rae disappears, and "crucial" takes on a whole new meaning.
The Spellman Files is a hilarious and at times suspenseful novel about a modern family with a highly unique way of loving, living, and making a living - often times in harmony.

    the spellman files
laugh out loud humor. likeable characters. much more entertaining than sappy romance novels and not violent like some suspense/mystery.
    A Funny READ
I thought the story was very clever and funny but I didn't like the narration. There was no distinction between any of the characters voices: man, woman or child.
    LOVED the Spellman books!
Extremely entertaining! Kooky characters, crazy family relationships and a mystery or two. The narrator's dead-pan delivery was perfectly suited to the tongue-in-cheek tone of the book. I ended up listening to the first 3 Spellman books in a row...couldn't get enough! If you like the Stephanie Plum novels, you're definitely going to love the Spellman family antics.
    I liked it
    Any additional comments?
As noted by other reviewers, the narrator was a bit monotone - but as I continued listening I got used to it and it did seem to work out as another reviewer said - the voice does seem to fit however, I'm still wavering if I want to move on to another book or not. I felt like the story was fine and I can see (or at least presume) that the books and characters will get better, but this one definitely seemed like a first novel - but everyone does have to have a first.
Thought I would love this series but ...,
From the description I really thought I would love this series but I was constantly waiting for the story to develop, thinking this was just an introduction to the characters but I never found it very funny nor engaging, sorry... I did listen to the whole book but I think it was wasted time. Not interested in reading the other books of the same series.

Abridged Version - Wish it wasn't
I loved Crusader's Cross and The Tin Roof Blowdown so I wanted to go back and listen to the Burke/Robichaux series in order.
I started with Heaven's Prisoners and move on to this one.
These abridged audiobooks are not nearly as good. It just seems there are too many holes in the storyline and storytelling aspect of the book.
This was a tad better than Heaven's Prisoners, which was REAL choppy, and I only rated it 3-stars solely due to the reader, Will Patton.
Will Patton is an extraordinary reader and I will also bump this rating to a 4 instead of 3-star solely based on his performance of the book.
    Wish It Was Unabridged
Great story and a wonderful reader. Will Patton is the perfect reader for Burke's narratives. However, his books are too complex to be abridged, at least in this length. Check out Tin Roof Blow Down for a really great listen. It will make you purchase all the others as it did for me.
    Who will I read next
Sometimes I worry who I will read if James Lee Burke and Tony Hillerman stop writing. If you are southern and from Louisiana you will love this book and you will see ghost through the eyes of Burke. If you are not southern and from Louisiana, here is a little taste of Bayou country, And thanks again Will Patton for choosing to read Burke books.
    Narrator Problem
What made the experience of listening to In the Electric Mist with Confederate Dead the most enjoyable?
    The storyline.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The narrator did a good job with South Louisiana dialects (I'm a South Louisiana Native); but mispronounced 90% of proper nouns (ie) pecans, Lafayette, Prejean, Atchafalaya, etc. That I can live with and even understand; but, his voice volume went from 0-100 with each character. I was driving while listening and had to constantly change volume to try to hear and keep up with the book. His Dave Robichaux voice was a deep, soft whisper almost impossible to hear and understand, while other characters were loud and strident. Horribly disconcerting. I'm only glad that I bought the abridged version or I would never have finished this book.
    Any additional comments?
If you want to read this book, you might want to purchase the paperback version or Kindle book. . . . . .it is too difficult to listen to.

I have just downloaded this book again to listen to during the summer.

Reuters Africa correspondent Connie Burns suspects a British mercenary: a man who seems to turn up in every war-torn corner of Africa, whose reputation for violence and brutality is well-founded and widely known. Just Stunning!
This is a first rate, riveting psychological thriller. The writing is clear and evocative, the READER is absolutely wonderful with a delicate sly nuanced style perfect for this book. I love the main characters, the protaganist is believable and remarkable at the same time. If you like Nevada Barr or Lisa Scottoline you'll love this -- although this is somewhat better writing. If you like Ruth Rendell you'll love this -- although nobody writes better psychology or thrillers than she does.
A Real Novel & Mystery Thriller
This is a great listen, the characters are highly crafted, the plot incredible to the last word... whatever negative reviews there are must be looking for a fast moving book... this is the older tradition of unfolding and moving within the multiple plots a Peroit quest by an upstart smart woman journalist ~ and yes the first chapter is explored in depth later in the book so you will read all about it ~ but the prose is beautiful and the narration one of the finest on audible ~ English country side, old families with and without money, new politics and a taste of ad hoc terrorism delivered in a personal psychopathic way and rewarded twice over :) ~ If you love Mo Hayder's books, or Shadow of the Wind, this book is for you.
    Loved It, Give Me More
I downloaded this book because it was on sale and I am so glad I did. I think it ranks up there with the greatest contemporary British crime stories. I loved the ambiguity of the ending, the character development, and the wonderful plot.
I hope Audible decides to offer more from this author. I have become a fan.

    Fun but not my favourite.
I enjoyed this book because of its island references and the familiar characters. I also liked some of the new charactersMs Riggs characters are always well-rounded. The story was lacking and tended to plod along. I still enjoyed the book but I would say it was the weakest in the Victoria Trumbull series. So far, my favourite is Indian Pipes.

I listen to at least 3 mystery books a month. This is one of the best I've heard this year. Great story and even better narrator.
great book...awesome reader. ..must read . then
great book, one of the best narrators, perfect start to a new series. must read.
Turned Out to be a Good Book
For me this book started out really slow. I liked how it builds up, but I'm so used to just jumping in that having a book move so slow at the beginning was kind of hard for me; hence, the rating of only 4 stars. Other than that, the book was awesome. I loved everything about it: from the plot and storyline to the characters was great. I like the way she pulled, Regan, the true crimes writer into the storyline and built on her character. It was nice to see her in each part of the book, and have her help with the building of the case. There isnt much romance in the novel, but there is a building of friendship and relationships. You can actually see the couples in the book growing closer as the danger and intrigue takes over in the novel. Mariah Stewart is one of the authors I like to read a lot of, so she didnt disappoint me with this one either. I was hoping for a little more of a romance because thats what Im used to from her other books, but other than that, I enjoyed the book. Even though there was so much going on and the cases in the book were kind of scary and there were moments of solemnity and sadness, there were moments when you just had to smile or even laugh out right, which added to the novels charm and mystery.
The narrator was pretty. At first, I was a little skeptical, but after a while, she grew on me. Shes not very good at the male voices, but I can distinguish characters from each other because of the way she changes the pitch and tone of her voice. For the most part, I think she did a good job, and I wouldnt mine reading another set of books shes read.
If youre looking for a good mystery and want to play whodunit, give this book a chance. The person who did it was on my suspect list, but I didnt actually know until Mariah Stewart revealed the killer exactly who he was. Happy reading.
    "Nothing Like Homemade Bread"
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Nope, seemed a bit dull. The outline was good but this needed a bit better editing. There didn't seem to have any great highs or low, just too medium tempo.
I purchased as the late great Anna Fields read this story.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
I listened to this story in 12-19-11 but did not write a review.

One man knows what happened that night. Adopting the alias of a killer caught 80 years before, he has already contacted the press. His terms are clear: he wants money, he wants power, he wants celebrity. And if he doesn't get what he wants, Rainie will be gone for good.
Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, it's still not enough.
As the clock winds down on a terrifying deadline, Pierce plunges headlong into the most desperate hunt of his life, into the shattering search for a killer, a lethal truth, and for the love of his life, who may forever be, gone.

    Outstanding Book and Narration
My first read of Lisa Gartner and a very pleasent surprise! Equally important from an audiobook standpoint, the narrator does an excellent job bringing life to the characters while providing above average pace and cadence to her read. Add an outstanding storyline with enough twists and turns to keep you listening long after you reach your destination, and you have a winner!
    Great story...but
I didn't enjoy the performance of this book. First some weird music comes on at the beginning and end of the book like unsolved mysteries. The person reading in my opinion was way to dark. I didn't like the whispering or the attempt at different voices for the characters.
    Gone was good
Would you listen to Gone again? Why?
It was entertaining but no reason for me to listen to it twice... there are a LOT of good books out there for me to listen to.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
...a great balance of descriptions and action
What about Kirsten Kairos???s performance did you like?
    clarity good
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
...couple of giggles... a little laughter is nice.
    Any additional comments?
    none
    Great listen!
I've tried to follow Rainie and Quincy through all of the books since they first met up and I really enjoyed this one, just like all of the others. My only disappointment was in Quincy's demeanor - it just didn't sound like him. While there was no doubt that Rainie was "his wife" and he was distraught over her disappearance, he just didn't seem to add much to the investigation. Neither did his daughter Kimberley. Still, loved the story and it kept me quessing and made me tear up at the end (but not a lame ending - don't worry!). Excellent job!
