    Medically inaccurate, risible narrative
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If I had listened to a different book.
Has Death in Hellfire turned you off from other books in this genre?
About the book: an author should not think of fiction as an opportunity to demonstrate his or her own ignorance of reality. Deryn Lake cannot seem to distinguish primary from tertiary syphilis (there is a difference); despite making some verbal handwaving in that direction. He (or she--I don't know and don't care) appears to have no understanding of medical knowledge and treatment of the era and little understanding of nature of a disease central to the narrative.
As to the characters: the villains are a all mustache twirling, menacing evildoers as obvious as the heavies in silent movies. The hero, despite his claims to medical knowledge, never does more than exclaim, at one point, "I am an apothecary!" (I choked on my coffee at the time and still can't stop mentally giggling about it.) Despite the hero's claims of medical knowledge, he makes no effort towards getting the poor syphilitic victim some treatment for his disease. (I believe mercury was called for in some way.)
Have you listened to any of Michael Tudor Barness other performances before? How does this one compare?
Michael Tudor Barnes is one of on my favorite performers and my only reason for picking up this audiobook. Here, though, even he seems not at his best. I attribute this to the material. 4 stars for the fact that he stayed awake.
What character would you cut from Death in Hellfire?
    All of them.
    Any additional comments?
The second half of this book may be the finest written in the English tongue. I will never know. I couldn't finish.
    More Please!!!
    Please, please, more Deryn Lake.
    Drivel.....
Gave this one star as I think that is the minimum possible. I have given up on the listen halfway through. The story is simplistic and childish and all the characters are two dimensional and just plain silly. There is no real 'mystery' to the story and it is so ridiculous the way things just pan out that I was beginning to think that it was supposed to be a comedy, 'Carry On' style! However, even in this endeavour it totally fails. It seems the characters are based on the clich? of bumbling red faced wig wearing 18th century fools. I think the author may be trying to emulate Charles Dickens, unfortunately his story telling abilities are on another planet. Sorry to be so negative, but........

    Publisher's Summary:
The clean, seemingly emotionless kills leave MC and Kitt little but the growing string of victims to follow - all young adults, clean cut, kid-next-door types who've never taken a step outside the law. And this time around, it's personal for MC: The first victim is her cousin Tommy Mariano, oldest son of her favorite aunt.
As MC and Kitt hunt a faceless killer, they are led deep into cyberspace, where no one is who they seem and you never know who's watching. At the heart of this fast-paced thriller is the relationship between the two headstrong women, their struggle to balance their dual roles, to learn to trust, and to walk the fine line between upholding the law - and taking it into their own hands as they race to find a murderer.

I ended up listening to this one all night
It is not too often that I start a book and can not stop until it is finished. This was one that I just could not turn off. Everytime I thought I was getting to a good stopping point something big happened and I had to listen on.
What I really liked was the ending. I thought I had this one figured out fairly early on but was quite surprised who it was.
    Enjoyed this one; great narrator
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes. A good story, like-able protagonists, not too many characters.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yep, the ball keeps rolling. The chapters are short, and end with a hook.
What about Lorelei Kings performance did you like?
Maintained instensity; able to emulate males satisfactorily. She sounds like-able and sexy.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Police procedural, suspense, female protagonist
    Any additional comments?
A great Audible selection. Thank you.
    Zig Zag
I really enjoyed this book, this was my first time having the pleasure of listening to anything by this author but most assuredly not the last. The book kept me wondering and just when I thought I knew who'd done it I'd find out I was wrong. It was at times a little confusing keeping the players straight, I figure I'll wait a couple of months and listen to it again and if your reading this review I'd advise you to read it too.

Promising start, but suffered in translation
I just never really got into this book. I think a lot of the problems comes from the choppy phrasing, which I assume arises from poor translation and not the original narrative. Also, I feel this would have much more gripping if Eriksson had stayed to a strict "police procedural" format instead of veering off into psychoanalysis.
The narrator does a good job with the varying characters.
    Good but not great
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
    Hardcopy yes, audible no.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
    The brothers.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
His tone range was very poor. His inflections when speaking as a woman were brutual.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    No

Nobody can replace Paretsky, but ...
I need mysteries like I need great bread. I am trying to get over very serious leg injuries, so I am glued to my ear buds and in turn to my MP3 player as I work out in the gym or on the beach. Lately, I've been on a Jan Burke binge, because I finally listened to all of Grafton, have been a bit put off by the snobby attitude of Marcia Muller, though I'm sure I'll be back downloading her books if nothing better comes along, and I have listened to all of Paretsky's wonderful works.
Both characters, Paretsky's VI Warshawsky and Burke's Irene, are in their 40's and both writers seem to be within 3 to 5 years of my own age. Yet, it took me a couple of tries to get used to Burke's vision. She seems much older than I, and that's uncommon!
Beyond a seemingly dated point of view, she makes huge mistakes that make her books impossible. In this one, the killer turns out to be someone who is seemingly improbable, and there are issues with how it fits together. Yet, I've decided there are essentially four choices with mysteries: either they are so complex, I can't figure them out no matter how long I think about them (modern Sherlock BBC series,) they are obvious and unchallenging, they highly improbable but consistently explained (Paretsky,) or, they are flawed. The latter is the fate of the Irene series.
Still, I listened to the entire book and will download all the rest of them. I love the performance and the character development. Please recommend another mystery series soon!
    Another good Irene book.
I really like the Irene series and this one didn't disappoint me. She is endearing and spunky and I like that this one goes into her past a bit and also shows a sort of flawed side to her and a couple of bad choices she has made. I appreciate that in a character because if she were a saint, she wouldn't be nearly as interesting. This series is a good combination of murder mystery without too many details. I love forensic novels as well, but between reading those I like to give my mind a break and read something that is just as interesting without taxing my brain.
Without giving the plot away I will say that I was intrigued all the way to the end and didn't catch on too early. I really like the characters and the respect Jan Burke gives to them. I was worried after the last Irene book that the character/stories would start to get redundant but I do like where Burke has gone with this one. I will definitely be moving on to the next book in this series.
The narrator is a very good addition to this book. I had purchased this title in print from a secondhand book story a while ago and was planning on just skipping the audio for this one. Halfway through the book some pages were ripped out so I decided to go ahead and purchase the audio. It was actually a very good decision because the narrator does a very great job reading this book.

    Story does not dissapoint
This is the second book in the Weiss and Bishop series. It is well done and keeps your attention. I really enjoyed the twist near the end when you learn who the real bad guy is.
Andre Klavan's writing style is enjoyable as his stories are well crafted and there is also a good amount of wry humor in the way characters comtemplate their situations.
    Fantastic Read
I couldn't stop listening to this book. Andrew
Klavan is maybe the best story teller that I have
ever heard or read. You will want to listen to the
books in order: Dynamite Road then Shotgun Alley
    then Damnation Street.
    great characters
I still really like the characters in this series. The author's narration is impressive.

This book was portrayed as an action packed book; I was unable to find much action in it at all. This book came highly recommended to me and fell way short of my preconceived notions. It was worth the listen to kill time but, not much else.

Wily tomcat Joe Grey senses trouble is on the way, but he never expected a federal officer would be shot or that two locals would be brutally murdered. With danger closing in, the feline detective, his girlfriend Dulcie, and their tattercoat friend Kit must put paws and whiskers together to capture a very nasty criminal before he strikes again.
    Members Reviews:
    Joe Grey is back
Joe Grey, Dulcie, and Kit are joined by the three ferals to help rescue Dulcie's beloved Wilma after she is kidnapped. In addition, Joe is obssessed with the three murders of women in their homes. Is there a serial killer lose in Medina Point?
This book is about halfway in the series.
The voice of Joe isn't exactly what I imagined for a rough tough tomcat but I got use to it. The other voices are quite good and the reader does catch Joe's impatience and slight arrogance.
A welcome addition to Audible's collection, I hope the others in the series will soon join it.
    Wonderful Story, Horrible Performance
Would you listen to Cat Pay the Devil again? Why?
I've listened to this book twice now because I enjoy the story and it's important part of the story arc of the Joe Grey mystery series.
How could the performance have been better?
I almost stopped listening to this book because the performance was so bad. William Dufris is a wonderful narrator, but his voices are awful. All of his female characters sounded insipid and his male characters sounded pompous. His portrayal of Joe Grey in particular almost made me put the book down. His Joe Grey removes all of the redeeming qualities and intricacies of the character; the voice he uses makes you want to run him over, vice chuckle over some his more cattish responses.
I only liked the cats, some spousal abuse
What could Shirley Rousseau Murphy have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I have read a bunch of books in this series, but not all of them and not in order. The series has talking cats that people are not supposed to know talk. As the series has gone on various people have found out the secret to the point it is pretty ridiculous. Among regular characters those who dont know are definitely in the minority. At the time I listened to this one, the early ones were not available on Audible but they are there now. So I can finally fill in my gaps and see how we got to this point
One thing about these books, and this one is a great example of it, is the characters, places, etc. are often repulsive or at least unappealing. Cat Pay the Devil has a selection of characters I just find to be a turn off. Cage Jones our main villain is a nasty felon. Thats ok. But does he have to have a whole repulsive family? An infuriatingly sly and timid younger sister with an abusive husband. (There is something of an abused wife theme in this one and I find the authors annoyance at the victims slightly odd though I suppose such people would be very frustrating to know.) There is also something of a theme in these books of very bad brothers usually freeloading foreign ones with mistreated subservient sisters. Yuck! Anyway we have to spend too much time with various lowlifes but perhaps that is just natural when the good guys are law enforcement related. The narrator does these people very well too which only makes them more unpleasant. It is the cats who get me through these.

    Members Reviews:
    A disappointment
While I generally enjoy Meg Gardner, I found this novel very difficult to swallow. Everything that can go wrong does go wrong, and there are way too many improbables in the narrative line. No one in the story seems to take the crimes seriously enough; i.e., a blatant kidnapping is ignored by everyone, including the victim and the police, first degree assault is disregarded, accessory to murder one is excused as poor judgment, etc. If I didn't need to keep both hands on the wheel while listening and driving, I would have been tearing my hair out. Kudos to the narrator, who did a fine job with weak material.
    Meg, you can do better.

    Members Reviews:
    A Good Listen
This is a fun mystery. Not Tope's finest work, the story nevertheless held my interest and the mystery kept me guessing. Like most of this author's mysteries, the main themes running through the novel center on family and interpersonal relationships. In this book Ms. Tope looks at how moments of careless passion can guide events and bring about tragedy immediately and for decades down the line. Given these strong thematic elements, I must respectfully disagree with another reviewer who found (what I thought to be fairly tame) sexual references superfluous. In this book a moment's unguarded passion whether sexual or angry can have profound and unintended consequences: the frivolity of a sex toy party is contrasted with a young doctor foregoing a medical career to stay home with her children. In another case a new police officer slaps a small child -- a potentially career ending act. Worth a listen!
    Not worth a credit
I'm very sorry I spent a credit on this book. It was slow moving, repetitive, and predictable.
    Never Hire Thea to Housesit...!!!
After four of these books you'd think I'd know better... I keep expecting this Thea creature to get a little smarter..
I'm of the option she is bipolar with whims and whines coming from all directions at any given time.. selfish,
shortsighted, and capriciously steadfast in her stupidity... Oh wait,..
How smart am I to keep buying...
I'm not,.. it won't happen again...
She is a menace to society.. and I will no longer support her...that would make me just as culpable...
Good bye Thea,... and good riddance!
    Engrossing with unacceptable sexual matter
My family recently listened to this entire book during a cross country trip. We found the story line to be most interesting and intriguing. However, there are unnecessary passages which refer to sexual misconduct and/or sexual toy parties that are absolutely unnecessary to the story line and which truly take away from the joy of "reading" this otherwise engrossing novel. Because of these inappropriate passages, I cannot recommend this book.
    Absolutely Gripping
A great read. You really feel you know the characters and you never know what is around the corner, even if you think you do!

Too long, slow, and boring unfortunately. Not up to usual standard. Narrator good but overall, delivery and story somnambulant.
    Get hooked
Its just a shame that Audible have not got more of the Joe Fraraday series to download. If you like your modern dective thrillers to have a gritty realism, a supurb cast of colourful characters and a good story line to keep you hooked then look no futher a really enjoyable listen. If you like Rebus, Morse, Frost then you will be pleased with another addition to the modern detective. The narrator Tim Pepper is perfect for creating the ambience and has a wide range of voices that make the whole experience a treat.
