Redeemed Backslider Returns to CHURCH.

Church FINALLY fixed his pacing problem with 'the Man with the Baltic Stare'. This novel was a lot better than 'Bamboo and Blood'. It may even be better than his first one (although 'Corpse in the Koryo' gets originality points). Anyway, it redeemed the Inspector O series for me.

Church is as strong a writer as Olen Steinhauer, just working a different geography. All the blurbing, however, about how he is the next le Carré is about 20+ amazing books premature. I don't think ANYONE will be the next le Carré . I'm not even sure if le Carré would be capable now of being the next le Carré .

But, head back to Church (no more le Carré backsliding today). I think this novel was more confident, less messy, and reminded me of why I started reading Church in the first place. I guess I'm going to have to read Johnson's 'Orphan Master's Son' now just to get North Korea out of my blood.

Typical Rick Mofina - OUTSTANDING!!!!

This is an amazing story. This book kept me riveted from about 5 minutes in until the book ended. I really like Rick Mofina and have thoroughly enjoyed his other two series (Reed and Sydowski & Jason Wade). This series is an earlier work and I didn't think it would be as good - boy was I Wrong!!!!

In this series the protagonist is a reporter, Jack Gannon. When a nursing assistant student is murdered in the park and another woman is kidnapped the police do a half ass investigation. When a confidential informant tells Gannon that a police officer is involved he runs with the story and is eventually fired as a result. He can't let it go and decides to investigate as a freelancer and if it leads somewhere hopefully a reputable publisher will pay. What ensues is a wild cross country chase for a killer who leaves bodies in his wake. This comes close to costing Gannon his own life.

Graham Rowat does a fantastic job narrating.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this book.

Rick rips off another excellent story

I loved the fast paced action and that this was a thriller with heavy psychological ties that enhances you from the beginning and draws you into the story as one aspect or another makes one think "what has this to do with the price of eggs"? Then The author scrambles all the eggs together to deliver one very satisfying story.

I have loved Iris Johansen from the moment I first picked up one of her books years ago. I love her today and eagerly await the release of each new book! Quinn is well written and a thrill to listen to!

The voice of the narrator grated on my nerves. She was the voice for all three books; Eve, Quinn, and Bonnie.

Second time around can be disappointing

I had listened to this book years ago, on discs, and recalling that I liked Tull's performance, I decided to spring a credit on it now. The narration was good, although I think Bill Wallis may be slightly better as the voice of Rumpole, but the story seemed weak. Elsewhere, I read that Mortimer didn't seem to know where he was going here, and I pretty much agree. For what it's worth, there's nothing in this book to miss in terms of content; one could skip it without missing out on any details relevant to later doings. On the other hand, Rumpole fans (rather than newbies to the goings on at Equity Court) would appreciate the references, and Tull does read well.

This is not one of Ruth Rendell's best but the biggest problem here is the poor abridgement. There is little character introduction and the narrative is confusing. Listen to the unabridged version !

This was my first Inspector Wexford mystery, if not my first Ruth Rendell (whom I love), but certainly not my last! Now I have the first twelve to look forward to!

Great fun and logical ending

Not only do you want to know who did it, you find out why the killer did it. Hard to put the book down once you start reading.

Rendell at her best

This is definitely one of my favourite Ruth Rendells and I have read it many times. As I am unable to read at present and wanted to be reminded of Rendell's brilluance I decided to try an abridged listen. This is well narrated by George Baker (Wexford on screen) and does not disapoint. It is a gripping listen but if you are new to Rendell or this novel I would recommend the unabridged version. I love the atmosphere and the characterisation in this novel and much of this is lost in the abridged version. However it is still highly recommended if you want a gripping, quick listen.

absolut fantastisch!

habe schon innerhalb der ersten zwei minuten mehrmals laut lachen müssen und das ganze buch innerhalb eines tages angehört. man merkt, dass man ein gutes hörbuch erwischt hat, wenn man nicht aufhören will, zu hören aber gleichzeitig auch nicht mehr weiter hören will, weil man nicht so schnell fertig sein möchte. genau so ging es mir mit winterkartoffelknödel. zum glück gibts noch 7 weitere bücher die ich nun eins nach dem anderen durchhören werde! auch der leser ist absolut fantastisch und hat das ganze mit seinem bayerischen dialekt nur noch besser gemacht!

Can't wait to listen to the next one !

Die Serie, dies ist das erste Buch, ist in Deutschland sehr beliebt. Der Erzählers des Hörbuches ist sehr gut, aber die Geschichte war dann nicht unbedingt mein Ding.

Als expat habe ich diese gesunde Portion Heimat sehr genossen. Jedenfalls für Bayern eine klare Empfehlung.

Always love Brandt

This book just keeps going. Always love the continuous action. It makes the miles fly by.

One problem. The tracks are out of sync at the beginning. You have to be patient, because eventually it all makes sense.

An interesting yarn of tough and atypical cops

Where does Calibre rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

This is the best Ken Bruen book I've read, but the mistakes in the recording of the novel detracted greatly from the listener's enjoyment. (missing chapters and chapters presented out of order). Errors certainly worthy of a full refund!

Very disappointing indeed.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Calibre?

When a disgraced officer takes murderous measures to restore his reputation on the police force and rid the city of a monster set free by the courts.

What about Gerard Doyles performance did you like?

Doyle has a gift for accents and truly seems to become each of the various characters he speaks for. Very well done.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were some surprising twists and turns in the plot that caused me a sharp intake of breath on occasion. Some of DS Brandt's irreverent comments made me chuckle as well. What a unique character he is. I love it when a rather bad guy does good things.

Great read. Wonderfully unique characters. Not the typical detective story and all the better for it. Now I'm compelled to read all the Insp. Brandt novels. They are a great addition to Ken Bruen's Jack Taylor stories.

What made the experience of listening to Cosi Fan Tutti the most enjoyable?

Michael Kitchen is a wonderful reader, he pronounces the Italian words sprinkled through the story beautifully. He has just the right balance of lightness and irony for the character of Aurelio Zen, the disillusioned Italian detective. This story is playing off the opera Cosi Fan Tutte, with the characters of the story having similar experiences to those in the opera.

What other book might you compare Cosi Fan Tutti to and why?

I am a big Michael Dibdin/Aurelio Zen fan, and this book has a decidedly different, more playful style than the other books. That is not to say it is not as good, it doesn't have the more serious tone that the other stories do. It is a nice change for Zen.

What does Michael Kitchen bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Michael Kitchen has a wonderful voice, pronounces the Italian words expertly, and has just the right tone of irony that is required for the Aurelio Zen series.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This book was very entertaining and funny, I highly recommend it to fans of Aurelio Zen and those who enjoy lighthearted detective stories.

Enjoyable, fun, intriguing

Yes, I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good story told by a great voice artist like Michael Kitchen.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot is down right fun.

What about Michael Kitchens performance did you like?

Mr Kitchen is as good as ever. Besides I love his Folye's War series. He is certainly a great actor. Forget someone like Tom Cruse reading this. Kitchen is the consummate leading character actor at the top of his game. He appears to be having great fun with the various voices. I envy such talent.

Any additional comments?

One can really appreciate this story when you find a quiet place, a cup of hot chocolate, and no interruptions. It is not hard to "get into" this story. I will wait a month or two and hear it again.

This was the most entertaining of all of the Michael Dibdin audiobooks. Michael Kitchen was fantastic reading it.

My favorite Zen to date

Great characters, and great reading by Kitchen, whose entertaining and distinguishing accents make listening easy. Zen's taxi-driver reminded me of the inn-keeper in Shaw's A Man of Destiny (comedic play about the young Napoleon). The plot is good enough, but who needs a great plot with scenes and dialogue like this. Don't listen near the "Quiet Please" sign, or be prepared to suppress chuckles!
