    Pleasantly surprised!
I have always enjoyed Ms Unger's work, and when these early books she had written were released as audiobooks, I must admit I was nervous about trying them. Luckly my worry was unfounded and although the plot of Darkness Gathers may have been a made bit overly complex with lots and lots of action surrounding it, altogether it was an excellent read with some good twists and turns to continually surprise and pique ones interest. Certainly worth a credit.

    Just couldn't do it...
I had to stop listening. I live on a farm and am very familiar with rural life, but I felt this story line was just pushing it too far. I quit just a few chapters in to the book.

  • Blood Moon Audiobook by Ed Gorman

    Title: Blood Moon
Subtitle: A Robert Payne Mystery, Book 1
    Author: Ed Gorman
    Narrator: Mark Douglas Nelson
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 42 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 08-29-12
    Publisher: Crossroad Press
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 148 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Former FBI agent and psychological profiler Robert Payne is on the trail of a serial killer. A 12 year old girl has been murdered and mutilated, and the detective assigned to the case wound up dead. Now Nora Conners, the girl's wealthy mother, has hired Payne to solve the murder and bring closure. After narrowing his search to three men, a televangelist, a honey salesman, and an art teacher, all living in the small Iowa town of New Hope, Payne begins to narrow the field, posing as a journalist.
That's just the start. As the daughter of one of the suspects joins the list of victim, and the woman who hired him is murdered, Payne finds himself on a race to solve the case before he himself is implicated.
Taut, suspenseful, and filled with the quirky details and character flaws that are the hallmark of Ed Gorman's fiction, Blood Moon is a wonderful introduction to a very memorable character. Be sure to follow his adventures through the other three Robert Payne novels, Hawk Moon, Voodoo Moon, and Harlot's Moon.

    A good writer, a great narrator, but. . .
If you can't handle books that include gruesome things involving puppies and children, you may want to avoid this one.
The main storyline is an ex FBI agent investigating a case - the character is likable and the investigation is intriguing and the narrator has an appropriate style and pleasant voice.
The back story is in prison and gets pretty ugly. I skipped over most of these scenes without losing the plot line of the main story.
Eventually of course the two storylines merge and it gets pretty sickening toward the end. By then I was caught up in the plot enough that I stuck it out but I had to remove the earbuds off and on.
I might try some more of the Robert Payne series as Ed Gorman is an excellent writer. The dialogue is believable and the story flows nicely.
a rather stupid story with barely there narration
Is there anything you would change about this book?
I'd change pretty much everything. The hero starts o'k but by the end he is blindly walking into such glaringly obvious traps that one starts wondering how that guy had managed to survive and even become a private detective.
The setting (especially the end) is so melodramatically bad - it becomes morbidly funny. I kept expecting Jaws to appear, gnashing his iron teeth :) Poor puppies, rats, underground cellars, dropping guns, girls killed by dozens (all the while poor reader wonders what was the real FBI doing while dozens and dozens of kids kept dissapearing, unfortunately the author is not bound by such realistic concerns).
I do not mind gory when gory is necessary but this was excessive, over the top and mostly not needed. O'K, we know the main villain is a sadistic SOB after the first puppy - how many more explicit sadistic scenes does a reader need?
Would you ever listen to anything by Ed Gorman again?
    Most definitely not.
What about Mark Douglas Nelsons performance did you like?
Nothing. But I would be sorry for anybody who had to narrate such trash.
Could you see Blood Moon being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    Please, don't.
    Any additional comments?
Feel like reading about Dr.Lecter - need a dose of elegant smarts LOL
    Tried to be too clever
This book had some good ideas and a strong main character.

Another, The Dog Does NOT Die
    OK, first thing and SPOILER:
There is a dog, his name is Tucker and HE DOES NOT DIE. He doesn't even suffer. I am telling you this first thing because I ruined the surprises in the book looking for the dog's fate at the end. So to keep you from doing the same thing I am telling you THE DOG DOES NOT DIE.
This is a fast and fascinating book. The only really "weak" thing in the book is the fact that the female protagonist is at one point strong and amazing and then the next she falls apart about nothing. Yes, bad things happen to her, but when she explains these things to the police she gets hysterical. I found this to be totally out of bounds as the character is a psychologist and she is supposed to have a handle on this type of thing. So she goes from being hysterical to amazing. And she is, at times.
Her husband is missing and Jacobson really never explains what happened to him. He loses his memory but the back story about that incident is kinda glossed over. Nevertheless, he is an interesting character.
Several of Jacobson's "reliables" either appear or are introduced. He also makes a reference back to the character in his first book. Kudos.
Jacobson is not only writing he is world building and he is very good at it. His action scenes are not tedious and they are quite interesting, though a little bloody for my taste, but these are not nice people he is dealing with.
The villain is bad, and I don't mean he doesn't call his mother on her birthday; I mean this guy makes the boogeyman seem to be a nice guy.
The ending is great and you are going to be not only surprised but happy, except for one death, with the resolution.
The story starts with a husband going missing. He went on a ski trip. He didn't come back when he said he would. From that tiny premise leaps a huge story. No matter what you think is going on, you have not a clue.
Pulls you in, keeps you reading until the twisting sprint to the end
Reading the series out of order, but itâs kind of interesting doing it that way because you get to go back to the beginning, with The Hunted, to see how the characters are introduced, how they got started in the series, and what their original relationships were like.
The Hunted starts off focusing on Lauren Chambers, a psychologist whose hubby goes missing. Sheâs got some psychological issues herself, which makes his disappearance even more difficult to deal with. The OPSIG group, and characters, have a lesser role early on in the story, but when the stakes get high, their role increases. Anthony Scarponi is one scary dude. Heâs back in a later novel (One of the Vail series), so itâs interesting to see where he came from.
Overall, the story pulls you in and the action and mystery/suspense of what really is going on keeps you reading.

    Language: English
    Release date: 07-05-12
    Publisher: Random House Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 32 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Once a hotshot investigative reporter, Jack Tagger now bangs out obituaries for a South Florida daily, plotting to resurrect my newspaper career by yoking my byline to some famous stiff. Jimmy Stoma, the infamous front man of Jimmy and the Slut Puppies, dead in a fishy-smelling scuba accident, might be the stiff of Jacks dreams - if only he can figure out what happened.
Standing in the way are (among others) his ambitious young editor, who hasnt yet fired anyone but plans to break her cherry on Jack; the rock stars pop-singer widow, whos using the occasion of her husbands death to re-launch her own career; and the soulless, profit-hungry owner of the newspaper, whom Jack once publicly humiliated at a stockholders meeting.
With clues from the dead rock singers music, Jack ultimately unravels Jimmy Stomas strange fate - in a hilariously hard-won triumph for muckraking journalism, and for the death-obsessed obituary writer himself.
Always be halfway prepared is Jack Taggers motto - and its more than enough to guarantee a wickedly funny, brilliantly entertaining novel from Carl Hiaasen.

    least favorite
least favorite Carl Hiaasen story. love his work - was not thrilled with this story.
Always interesting to hear an author read his work
I choose this version because it is read by Carl Hiaasen himself. I'm always willing to take a chance when I see that the writer in the narrator. Mr Hiaasen does a fairly good job. He is kind of deadpan throughout but his delivery works with the story.
If you are a fan of Hiaasen you might want the unabridged version (I've read both). While this abridgment is fairly good (and I've heard some bad ones) in shortening the story they took out much character development which is Hiaasen's long suit. I really missed this but felt the story flowed well without it.
    Novel plot
What did you love best about Basket Case?
Good writing and an innovative plot line.
Which character as performed by Carl Hiaasen was your favorite?
    The narrator, a news reporter.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Rock star makes a different kind of "hit".

He joins a private protection company in Washington, DC, and is assigned to guard Paul Luguire, a Federal Reserve executive and chief liaison with the US Treasury. Mullins and Luguire form a strong friendship. So when a police detective calls in the middle of the night with word of Luguires suicide, Mullins doesnt buy it.
His doubts are reinforced by Amanda Church, a former Secret Service colleague now in the Federal Reserves cybersecurity unit. First Line: "Rusty. Have you got any money on you?"
When Russell (Rusty) Mullins' wife dies of ovarian cancer, he feels a real need to take a different direction in his life. Ending his career in the Secret Service, he joins a private protection company based in Washington, D.C., and is assigned to guard Paul Luguire, a Federal Reserve executive and its chief liaison with the U.S. Treasury. The change means that Rusty gets to spend time with his grandchild, and he becomes good friends with Luguire.
Such good friends that when he gets a phone call from a police detective telling him that Luguire has committed suicide, Rusty doesn't believe it. His belief is confirmed by Federal Reserve employee Amanda Church, who once worked with him in the Secret Service. Church has uncovered an extremely suspicious financial transaction initiated by Luguire that now seems to be setting Rusty up. When a bank president is murdered, Rusty does indeed skyrocket to the top of the suspect list.
As Rusty follows a trail of clues, he's joined by a discredited journalist and a police detective who's mere months away from retirement.

Once inside she discoverers she's broken into the home of a wealthy attorney who just so happens to be a serial killer.
