    bad blood - disappointing
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
No. It was too complicated. Mostly it was dialogue rather than action. Totally addicted to the prey series by Sandford. This felt like a different author. Some books don't translate well to audio.
Has Bad Blood turned you off from other books in this genre?
No. I still look for crime and violence!
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes, although my wife thought he sounded drunk! I thought he was good and matched the story
Do you think Bad Blood needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
Yes, so that sandford can redeem himself!
    Any additional comments?
Flowers is a believable character, but there wasn't the tension and suspense I've got used to in the prey series with Lucas Davenport.
    Brilliant Endeavours
Great read. Mystery and dealing with a devastating community issue and Virgil is the strong. Man with humour

    Title: Cliff Walk
    Subtitle: Liam Mulligan, Book 2
    Author: Bruce DeSilva
    Narrator: Jeff Woodman
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 8 hrs and 26 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 05-22-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 293 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Prostitution has been legal in Rhode Island for more than a decade; Liam Mulligan, an old-school investigative reporter at a dying Providence newspaper, suspects the governor has been taking payoffs to keep it that way. But this isnt the only story making headlines a childs severed arm is discovered in a pile of garbage at a pig farm. Then the body of an internet pornographer is found sprawled on the rocks at the base of Newports famous Cliff Walk.
At first, the killings seem random, but as Mulligan keeps digging into the states thriving sex business, strange connections emerge. Promised free sex with hookers if he minds his own business - and a beating if he doesnt - Mulligan enlists "Thanks-Dad", the newspaper publishers son, and "Attila the Nun", the states colorful Attorney General, in his quest for the truth. What Mulligan learns will lead him to question his beliefs about sexual morality, shake his tenuous religious faith, and leave him wondering who his real friends are.
Cliff Walk is at once a hard-boiled mystery and an exploration of sex and religion in the age of pornography. Written with the unique and powerful voice that won DeSilva an Edgar Award for Best First Novel, Cliff Walk lifts Mulligan into the pantheon of great suspense heroes and is a giant leap for the career of Bruce DeSilva.
    Critic Reviews:
"[A] sterling follow-up to 2010's Rogue Island, which won Edgar and Macavity awards for best first novel.... Look for this one to garner more award nominations." (Publishers Weekly)

    Wonderful
BUT.... don't start this series with this book as wonderful as it is. Nope, start with its predecessor, Rogue Island. You'll totally thank me. They just fit together so well and explain the living and dead cast members. OK, Ciff Walk can stand on its own bottom, but the beauty of Audible is that few books go out of print so we can enjoy Bruce DeSilva's imaginative growth. And Jeff Woodman' fascinating talent as an actor and creator. DiSilva is as good as any mystery writer... and better than most.
DiSilva plays and teases with moral ambiguities and conundrums. His ensemble fit together, and his plotting fits together like the legendary stones of Machu Pichu. Treat yourself to this series...
Bruce DeSilva: have you listened to this?
Jeff Woodman's incredible narration was the perfect topping to this great story. The plot, characters, dialog, quirky setting and atmosphere???and the narration???were all outstanding! Deep as I was into the unfolding story, there were numerous times when I just marveled at the narration [like the calls from Dorkus, for example]. Thank you, gentlemen.
    Great story, characters and narration!
I have to like most the main characters in a book. There's no way not to love Mulligan and his cast of cronies at the Providence paper he works for. The narration is brilliant. It's just a really fun book and series.
    DeSilva and Workman are addicting.
This is the second book in the Liam Mulligan series, and I hope there are many more brewing in the mind of Mr. DeSilva. Mulligan is a throwback, a reporter who works in the palpably dying newspaper industry in Providence, Rhode Island. I know almost nothing about Providence, other than the fact that a former mayor named Rudy Cianci did about four years in a federal prison for corruption.

    Great twist!
This series is wonderfully delightful light reading. But this book in particular has a very unexpected twist at the end. Wonderful read!!
    Agatha Christie Title Clue
Would you listen to The Christie Caper again? Why?
Yes and have. I redo the series when a new book is added to the series. I like the stories to flow.
Who was your favorite character and why?
    Laurel always
Which character as performed by Kate Reading was your favorite?
Hennie, sweet, and sassy when she wants to be.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes, not a long story.
    Its ok
The idea wasn't bad, but missing compelling characters that make a good story. Felt more like it was rushed
    Another winner!
Love the way Redding reads. The characters in the story are a hoot and she makes them come alive. Not only is the story enjoyable in and of itself, but by the end, you'll have a list of a dozen more contemporary and classic mysteries to read.
    Jolly Good Show
This might be the best of the series so far. The mystery is complex and clever. The characters are well developed and realistic. Agatha would be very proud of the book.

A Fast Listen from a Great Voice
Where does Asylum Harbor and Burn Out rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I am on a Angela Dawe listening binge and found this author's work. Pretty good story telling. Angela good range of voices brings this tale to life. If you read/listened to Linda Howards' Cry No More, this mini series runs along that story line. It has so much potential to add lots of different mysteries for our heroine to solve. It is not on the par of Ms Howard, but could get there. These stories are more like Tami Hoag current work in short format.
Would you be willing to try another book from Traci Hohenstein? Why or why not?
Book #4 is read by another reader, than Angela Dawe, so no. For me it is about the reader, not just the story. #1 read a bit like Ernest Hemingway very precise and fast. I am on #2 as I write this review, and it's reading like an outline so far. I don't know if the pace will pick up but I love the readers' voice so I don't care. I would think the author should add just a bit more to her stories as she has the talent to hold a listener.
    Which scene was your favorite?
this author can evoke lots of emotion in different scenes both in book #1 & 2, so she should expand just a bit more. i.e. in book #1 mike and our heroine could have had some good banter or humor as there was no romance in this novel. In book 2, our missing person's husband evokes so much emotion in the first few chapters that I am glued to my head set. I write this review to take a break.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
actually the stories do fit TV series format. Used before "Gone But Not Forgotten"
    Any additional comments?
This author is sold at my "buy now price, never a credit." and is good entertainment for the money.

    Narrator: Christian Rummel
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 55 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 04-30-12
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 79 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Long ago, Declan Burke fled Ireland in the dark of night, started a new life in New York City, and has never looked back - until one morning when he picks up the newspaper and reads the obituary of one Cathal Murphy. He sees at once that the obituary is a coded summary of his own life and probably a thinly veiled death threat. He turns to Halifax lawyer Monty Collins for advice, but when Monty starts to investigate the obits allusions to Declans IRA past, Declan decides to keep his lips sealed.
But keeping old secrets becomes much more difficult after a burst of gunfire at a family wedding and the appearance of Leo Killeen, the commanding officer of Declans former battalion in Dublin. Declan and Monty are confronted by a cast of enigmatic characters, including the owner of a nightclub frequented by the New York mob; a sultry chanteuse; and Burkes hotheaded son Francis, whose resentment and dubious activities set the family on a road to destruction. The subsequent discovery of a body in a rundown Brooklyn flat forces Declan to confront the suspicion that he has been manipulated all along by an unseen hand.
    Critic Reviews:
"Strong characters and a vivid depiction of Irish American family life make Emery's second mystery . . . as outstanding as her first." (Library Journal)
"Emery tops her vivid story of past political intrigue that could destroy the present with a surprising conclusion." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Hooked on this series
I mentioned in earlier reviews of the two Anne Emery novels how I had stumbled upon this author and started my series experience by listening to Book 5 and then going back to the beginning and reading #1. I am now on #3 after completing The Obit. I must admit that I am surprised that Audible listeners only gave this mystery a 3.8 rating. The story takes place in New York and once again Anne Emery spins a fascinating yarn which makes the listener want to keep going.
First of all I want to underline that Christian Rummel is utterly incredible here. I liked him in the other two books but in The Obit the accents of New York are quite cleverly and convincingly portrayed. Further there seems to be more important secondary characters so Rummel has to cover a wide range of voices.
The second point which i failed to state an earlier review is the humor, especially the Irish humor. Despite the story being about murder, the involvement of the IRA and Father's Burke's father being a murder suspect, there are many funny scenes, scenes when I actually laughed out loud.
I enjoyed this mystery and am presently enjoying The Barrington Street Blues (great title).
    Well worth the credits
    A tad disappointed
Downloaded this immediately after having finished the first in the series. I really liked The Sign of the Cross, but found this installment lacking. First of all, the premise seems a bit implausible -- a man's sons are unnerved by his reaction to an obituary and immediately conclude it hides a death threat, launching into an investigation on their own.

One of Sue Henry's good books
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
If you like Alaska and hearing about airplanes and bears in the wild, it will be enjoyable. I always like a good adventure and the plot was well done.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes. It was not always predictable.
What does Mary Peiffer bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Her enunciation was good and she expressed appropriate feeling when something was shocking, romantic, scary, or unknown.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
If I could have, I would have just to figure out who did what in the mystery.
    Any additional comments?
I loved hearing about the bears in Alaska and it encouraged me to Google about bears and to dream of one day seeing them in Alaska.

    Follow D I Huss
D I Huss is a busy lady she is the best D I in Goteborg, she is a mother of twin girls that keep the parents busy, she encourages her chef husband to be the best he can be. With all this going on, she solves crimes. Nightrounds is a good story, fast moving and a good ending. I have enjoyed all Ms Tursten novels and looking forward to her next adventure for D I Huss.
    Nordic Noir Disappointment
What a letdown. I'm only 6 chapters into this but I can already tell this is a real turkey. The story is written like a second rate TV crime drama. Trust me, this author is no Nesbo, Larson, or Mankell. Pretty juvenile. But it gets worse. The narration at 1x is the slowest I've ever heard in 10 years of listening to Audible. Out of sheer desperation I increased playback speed to 1.25x. At this speed the reading was a more normal pace, but - of course - some of the narrator's voices now sounded cartoonish. But there's more ... this is by far the worst narration I've heard. Now I know why it was only $5. You've been warned!
    Pretty good
I Really enjoyed this book....the mix of characters and suspense was just right and there were enough twists and turns to keep the reader guessing. I like Helene Tursten's style of writing, she strikes a good balance between the plot and background information around the home life of the main character. I didn't like the narration...I found the narrator had a harsh voice and was a bit "shouty" at times...I also struggled with the American accent and found it strange that an American should be chosen to voice a Scandanavian book, but...maybe that's just me.
The good, the bad and the very ugly
On the ugly side is the translation. Putting aside that it is a Swedish to American English translation it is all the little mistakes that jar you out of the narrative. At one point the detectives discover a "day planner" in a pocket. Now I think of a day planner as one of those large charts you see in offices where staff record leave, sickness etc. I can only assume it is a diary, but I am still not sure despite having completed the book. There are many more of these mistakes. The beginning of the book is worst but the effect fades through the book because you begin to mentally insert the right words.
The bad is the reader. Her narration is full of inappropriate.....pauses and while her Swedish pronunciation seems consistent with other readers the issue is that you can hear her vocally taking a run at the more complex ones for about half a sentence before she gets there.

    Members Reviews:
    Good book, bad narration
I really do love this series. It just bothers me I have to listen to Ruth Ann Phimister. Between her constant lip wetting and failed accents, it's almost unbearable. And if your narration calls for singing, please only do it if you can actually sing!
Didn't care for narrator in this particular series
The narrator's voice is more suited to Dearest Dorothy, and the Southern Sisters mystery series as both have elderly main characters. She does a great job with them but her voice is much too weak and trembly for the character of young Callie Webber. I think Ruth had sinus issues because many times her sniffles could be heard which was distracting. This book also had many places where the audio skipped and I totally missed what was being said which also detracted from the book. But I still enjoyed the book as the storyline was great.
Mystery and clean language all rolled into one.
I love Mindy Starns Clark books.
Although I do like Ruth Ann Phimister as a narrator her voice is too old for the main characters of this book. For me it takes away from the story. The character seems much younger than Miss RuthAnn P. Portrays her.
