Rick Barron, a former Beverly Hills cop, has risen to head of production of Centurion Pictures, and he's at the top of his game. But tensions are high in Hollywood, and when Rick's friend Sidney Brooks, a successful screenwriter, receives a subpoena from the House Un-American Activities Committee, Rick isn't surprised. One of Stuart Woods' Best!
Great sequel to "Prince of Beverly Hills." Characters are interesting, as is the story and plot lines. Entertaining and gripping.
    A bit short on plot
I'll buy any "mystery" set in L.A., but there wasn't a lot of mystery or plot in this book. The main characters are such good guys, that they're unbelievable. They continually rewrite contracts with their stars and screen writers giving them more money "because they're doing such a good job." There's chapter on chapter of dialog and setup that doesn't develop into or support any plot, in fact three quarters of the way through the book I was wondering what the mystery was. All that said, I'd probably buy it again. For all its faults, it was entertaining in a very light fashion.
A great slice of old Hollywood
A quick paced page turning fun ride through Hollywood history interwoven into this fiction. I can & will listen to this one again!
    Strange mystery
This read has to be one of the most affable murder/Senate proceedings I have ever heard. Its almost as if the author made a snarky non mysterious murder. He almost makes a political statement not. The narrator made it sound like Mr. Howe from Gilligan's Island was reading this. It is a book with little depth, and makes me wonder whether this is Mr. Woods' intentional subtle statement of how Mr. Woods really sees Hollywood, and with the way this book was written, actually seems to be appropriate for its subject matter. I listened all the way through and found it a little simplistic and affable, but want you to note that although it is almost engaging (not), it doesn't reach far enough for this reader's idea of a good who dunnit.

    Redaktionelle Rezensionen:

    Simply great
    Illuminati
I feel cheated by the publisher! This is "not" a new book by Dan Brown called Illuminati but in fact "Angels and Demons" in german. I read Angels and Demons in english and enjoyed it very much. How is it possible that just because it's in german, a book can be published under a different title. So much for honesty in publishing! This is yet one more reason for not ordering through Amazon...
    Five Stars
Great author, great subject matter, great read.
Historical research bad guys (zombies) vs. Master historical researcher and science genius (cute couple)
Its kind of like Freddie Kruger, Jason or Zombies vs. Master historian & science genius. The only trouble is that its 18 hours long. It started out great then it goes on to become a story that isn't grounded on sociological principles. I wish that the author did research to write something that could, in context, really happen.

    Great book and narration!
Kay Hooper's Bishop series is awesome. This is another hit! Great characters and twisted plot. I do so love her plot lines. Narration was solid and well done. Dick Hill does a very good job! Even if you have never read or heard a Bishop's novel before, you can read/listen to this without getting lost - a good stand alone!
Another great book by author Kay Hooper.
Kept my interest throughout. Loved the explanations about each person's gifts. Very compelling storyline. Narrator was very good.
My first listen to this author and I love her!!!
Great story, great narrorating. This is the first time I have listened to this author's books and I can tell you I will definately be back for more. I was hooked from the start.
My favorite book of this series
I have probably read this book at least 20 times. It has heart. It brings alive the characters. Where many books in this series are nearly stick like people with lines of text that seem rigid, the charters in this book flow. Loved it.

    Publisher's Summary:
Love is hell. Matt Connor knows this is true. His love for his girlfriend, Amy, is so intense that he feels he is in heaven when he is with her. When Amy leaves him for another man, Matt is shattered. In agony, he plans a diabolical scheme that first calls for him to disappear from the face of the earth. His revenge will make Amy wish she had never been born.
Love can heal. Matt's act of vengeance puts him in charge of Amy's infant son. He discovers a soothing warmth in Jimmy's eyes that makes him wonder if Amy's betrayal truly merited wrecking the child's life. Yet Matt's heart cannot be made whole until he has won Amy back.
Kelly cannot be made whole until she understands the depth of evil that lurks behind the Acid Man. Ironically, to rid herself and the world of her nemesis, she must seek out Matt Connor, a wanted man she has been ordered to bring to justice.
In Falling, Christopher Pike explores the depth and breadth of human emotion through two brilliantly etched characters: Kelly Feinman, who pays a terrible price to understand the nature of true evil, and Matt Connor, a classic antihero who captures the listener's sympathy. The listener is drawn deeply into the hearts and minds of these two people, who almost against our will force us to face our deepest fears. It is that power that makes Falling impossible to forget.
    Critic Reviews:
"Falling is full of challenging characters for the narrator....William Dufris handles these opportunities well. Fast-paced conversations requiring quick vocal switches are no problem for him; neither are tense scenes in which he picks up the tempo." (AudioFile)
    Members Reviews:
Wow! One of the best thrillers...
... that I've read/listened to in a long time. FALLING is a classic thriller with very well developed characters and deep insights into human souls. The first two very long chapters introduce both protagonists carefully while being little thrillers in their own right, before the storylines become entwined and the thrilling fun begins for real.
A great story, fantastic pace, and a wonderful performance by narrator William Dufris.
    Disappointing
There is not a single character in this book who acts rationally. As it is it is impossible to relate to any of the main characters. This may have worked in a book half this length but I simply didn't care about anyone by the end of the book. Add in that many of the situations I found to be nearly unbelievable and there were many times I wondered if it was worth the time to find out how it ended. Christopher Pike was recommended to me so I may try another but this book was a disappointment.
    It was painful
I grew up reading Christopher Pike, so he has a soft spot in my heart. I should have lived in the sweet memories....this book is just horrible. It is vulgar--the use of cursing made the dialogue seem cheap. The characters where unlikable and by the end of the book, I could care less what happened. I had to made myself finish the book, hoping against hope it would redeem itself. Ugh. I wasted my time, my money, and I am pretty sure, several brain cells.
    Awesome story
For confusing in the beginning because it seemed like 2 different stories, but once the characters crossed paths it made for an exciting story. I highly recommend
thrilling and twisty. I enjoyed this book.
Christopher Pike never disappoints. I was a fan as a teen too and read all his vampire books.

Now it's New Year's Eve, and his two best friends and business partners finally convince him to go out for the first time since Maggie's death. At their neighborhood pub just a few minutes before midnight, things in Tim Wallace's life go from bad to worse. "Can you keep a secret? A really big one?" a drunken stranger asks him. Before Tim can say anything or turn away, the man says, "You know Kinnelon, New Jersey? I murdered someone there. A girl...three months ago. I feel much better now. Now it's your problem." The weakest of David Rosenfelt's works
I was very disappointed with Rosenfelt's latest book, a stand-alone from his Andy Carpenter series. The characters seemed to exist only on paper - I never shook the feeling that they were simply figures created by the author to mouth words written by the author. It also seemed odd to me that Rosenfelt would follow his most recent Andy Carpenter novel ("Play Dead")with another story involving an exploded boat and a missing-and-presumed-dead love interest of the lead character. I felt as if Rosenfelt wrote this book so he could follow an alternative storyline he'd had to leave behind in "Play Dead."
    Don't read this one, but...
I too, was terribly disappointed and I wish the other reviews had been up when I bought this. I got about half way though this and simply couldn't get involved enough to even finish it, which is really rare for me. I have read all the Andy Carpenter books and based on those I rate Rosenfelt as one of my top 10, fun, interesting authors. I adore his other books, but this felt like a weak attempt to emulate Harlan Coben (excellent books, though they can be somewhat dark & disturbing). I really hate to say it, but skip this one.
    A very slow start
Rosenfelt's previous work had set my expectations high, and it was an exercise in perseverance to continue listening. The author was stingy with clues, so there was little opportunity for speculating solutions on the reader's part. When the denoument finally came it was a fair resolution, and interesting for the last part of the book. Not a bad listen overall, but lacking the entertainment value of the author's previous titles.
    Please stab me,
This book was so boring I could not get past the first two hours. I listen to a wide varity of topics and this was in my favorite group, mystery and suspense. I could not finish it. I had no sympathy for the main character and did not care about getting to the end.
    Not recommended.
    Slow start, but good finish
Yes, it starts a little slow, and yes, if you've read the Andy Carpenter series it's a whole different ball game, BUT finish it and you'll enjoy it.
I started it once and left it about 50 minutes; however, having just finished the Carpenter series, I expected more of the same.
Then I picked it up a few months later...
Ultimately, it has a good, original story line, and a bad guy you can't pick out until the end.

    Publisher's Summary:
Washington police conduct an arson investigation, with inconclusive results. But one tantalizing fragment of evidence suggests that a terrorist bombing may be imminent.
The presidential inauguration is quickly approaching, and Washington's police, fire, intelligence, military, federal, and White House security teams are making frantic preparations. Because of the strain on manpower, retired Secret Service agent Swamp Morgan is recalled to active duty. His task: investigate the incineration of the medical clinic as a "firefly" - Washington-speak for something that looks like a threat but isn't.
As Swamp begins what he thinks is a routine check-and-dismiss, the clinic's missing client begins preparations for his mission: to launch an attack on the American government - a decapitation strike intended to wipe out both the outgoing and incoming administrations. As the crucial day approaches, Swamp, the only agent to take the firefly seriously, must operate alone as the clock clicks down to a breathtaking finale.
Filled with brilliant twists and turns and heart-in-your-throat suspense, The Firefly offers first-class entertainment from beginning to end.
    Critic Reviews:
"A top-notch thriller from a top-notch writer. The Firefly may be Deutermann's best novel to date-reminiscent of The Day of the Jackal." (Nelson DeMille)
"Addictively enthralling...(wait till you get to the jaw-dropping ending!)." (Entertainment Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
A good listen, but ending defies credulity....
Keeps one's attention until the end wherein the faux-apocalyptic event is a stretch. Dick Hill, however, remains a good narrator. One gets to like protagonist, "Swamp". The author should develop this character a little more. Please bear in mind that my gold standard is PD James whose character development and social commentary has no equal. As thrillers go, this was worth the purchase.
Great stuff... no place to quit.
I was going to say that P.T. Deutermann's books are very much like Lee Child's Jack Reacher series, but that's not quite right. Better to say that the Jack Reacher books remind me of P.T. Deuttermann. They're similar in story and tone -- a loner, an outcast, who refuses to give up, set into a high-tension story that just doesn't quit, with lots of high tech -- and some fascinating low tech -- hi-jinks that leave you wondering, 'No kidding! Would that really work?' And of course they're both narrated by the more-than-excellent Dick Hill, so even to the extent that the two series differ, they sort of seem alike. Same voice.
Although there are a lot fewer Deutermann books than Lee Childs, I've come to like them better -- for one thing, Deutermann's male protagonist, whoever it is in each book, doesn't feel the need to fall into bed with every female who walks into the room -- a refreshing change over Reacher bad habit of bedding anything in sight. Child's plot device of having Reacher 'love 'em and leave 'em' in every single book is getting old. Deutermann skips all that Harlequin nonsense and sticks to the thriller aspects. Fine with me.
Maybe more importantly, Deutermann never bows to political correctness. His villains are the world's REAL villains, the ones we read about in the newspapers and see on the news.

Jesse and Crow - the next Spenser and Hawk?
I thought of this at the end of the first appearance of Crow, not entirely unlike the first meeting in a novel of Spenser and Hawk. This was a good story, better than the last crossover with Jesse Stone and Sunny Randall. Crow is a bad guy, but you like him for his autonomy, a hallmark characteristic of all Parker characters. Stone is more of a smartass in this book, much like a well loved Boston PI. James Naughton is a very good reader and you eventually stop noticing the endless "he said she said" overlays that are invisible on the paper page but really stand out in the audible book.
    He Said, She Said
Good story, good reader but way too many "He Saids and She Saids" I found it very distracting.
    Good story, and good narration
Finally a good narrator for the Jessie Stone series. The story is as good as any of Parker's novels, and now we have a narrator who doesn't sound bored by the sound of his own voice.
Let's have some more Jesse Stone novels read by James Naughton.
    Very Good
Most of the Jesse Stone are quite good and this one is no exception. It has all the typical Parker touches including personal codes, being a stand-up guy, bad men who do things that ultimately do good. The picture of Jesse's ex-wife Jen is a better, more sympathetic, fuller version of her than the one presented in previous books. It is also indicative of later works in the series where Jesse takes on the role of social arbiter if not social worker; as he seeks to help troubled teens in difficult circumstances. This is also the book that presents Molly Crane in a fuller manner than any of the others in the series. It does of course contain another of the typical Parker touches; the incessant he said, she said, Jesse said that are easily ignored in print but are jarring as well as irritating in audio form. An excellent read and a great listen as well.
    What were you thinking?
This was selected for my Book Club Read so I purchased in on audible for my commute and in print for our meeting. I cannot wait for my meeting to ask - What were you thinking? The He said, she said was crazy and bad.

    Publisher's Summary:
On a hillside near the cozy Irish village of Glennkill, the members of the flock gather around their shepherd, George, whose body lies pinned to the ground with a spade. George has cared for the sheep, reading them a plethora of books every night. The daily exposure to literature has made them far savvier about the workings of the human mind than your average sheep. Led by Miss Maple, the smartest sheep in Glennkill (and possibly the world), they set out to find George's killer.
The A-team of investigators includes Othello, the "bad-boy" black ram; Mopple the Whale, a merino who eats a lot and remembers everything; and Zora, a pensive, black-faced ewe with a weakness for abysses. Joined by other members of the richly talented flock, they engage in nightlong discussions about the crime and wild metaphysical speculations, and they embark on reconnaissance missions into the village, where they encounter some likely suspects. There's Ham, the terrifying butcher; Rebecca, a village newcomer with a secret and a scheme; Gabriel, the shady shepherd of a very odd flock; and Father Will, a sinister priest. Along the way, the sheep confront their own all-too-human struggles with guilt, misdeeds, and unrequited love.
Three Bags Full is already an international hit. Funny, fresh, and endearing, it introduces a wonderful breed of detectives to American audiences.
    Critic Reviews:
"A completely original, sparklingly inventive, cleverly written story." (Booklist)
"It's rather as if Agatha Christie had re-written The Wind in the Willows." (The Independent)

    Sheep Mystery
Well, what can one say about a mystery about a flock of sheep who wake one day to find their good shepherd dead. The sheep try to solve the mystery of who killed George and find a new shepherd who will continue to read romance novels to them. There were images in this very silly tale that had me laughing out loud. May not be great classic literature, but it is truly a unique story that makes a fun listen.
Close shear: sheep PIs almost cause 10 car pile-up
Driving down the interstate, listening to this story and laughing uproariously, I see a state trooper in the lane next to me and almost swerve into traffic. He glowers; rather like Othello.
Great characters (mainly ovine) with unique personalities and gifts. A good perspective from which to comment on the human condition (apparently, we are really herd animals). A mystery which is stimulating enough to keep the pace. But the real gems are the interactions between this special flock and the cast of suspects.
Chose this book for the humor, the mystery plot or the odd perspective on humanity -- and you will not be disappointed. My only lament is that I cannot foresee that there will be a sequel (after they return from the Continent) and i will miss this cast of characters.
    Very Funny
    Funny, with good narration
    Very Cute Story
A little slow to catch my interest in the beginning but picked up later. It was very fun to see life from the intelligent sheep's point of view regarding their shepard's death.
    An unusual & charming tale!
This story took a few chapters to grow on me, but it became an amazing listen.

Yeremin, a Soviet MiG pilot, rises from the privation of a Stalingrad orphanage to the heights of the cosmonaut corps. Stunningly Bad.
Listen as Andy Dufresne... I mean, Yev Yeremin... battles the evil forces of Boris and Natascha... I mean, The Evil Empire... on his way to - who cares?
Seriously. Rocky and Bullwinkle had more flattering caricatures of the Soviet Union. And Dan Brown has less purple prose. The narrator does his level best with the material, affecting more accents than an episode of Scooby Doo, but this only serves to push the dialogue from sad over to parody.
Still interested? Skip the first twenty minutes then - a gratuitously titillating romp through child sodomy.
Seriously. The Cold War ended nearly twenty years ago. How can Jed Mercurio write Soviets with less care, attention and insight than Craig Thomas mustered for "Firefox" more than thirty years earlier?

    Publisher's Summary:
Two weeks before Christmas, Wilkinson goes on a routine business trip that will forever entangle their two lives. It starts like so many others. Wilkinson calls for a car service to take him to the airport. But the driver of Lincoln Town Car 716 is late. When he finally shows up, he drives like a maniac, and Wilkinson feels fortunate to reach the airport alive.
Then he makes a big mistake. He calls the limousine company to complain. Customer Service assures him that the bad driver will be "dealt with". Nicolai Kyznetsoff looks and sounds like all the anonymous others who whisk successful executives back and forth to the airport every day, but the man behind the wheel of Car 716 is something much more sinister: an avenging dark angel who will stop at nothing to wreak revenge on the one man he holds responsible for ruining his life.

    Fantastic!
I loved this book I almost didn't get it because I had never listed to this author/reader - I'm so thrilled I listened to the sample and gave the book a try. As other reviewers have said - it can be quite dark and gruesome in some parts but very funny in others - oh, and not very PC in some - but I like the fact the author didn't back down. Im going to check out the other 3 books by this author and see if they come close they have the same narrator (and I plan on seeing what else this narrator has done hes fantastic!)
    Scary Ride!
This book is much darker than the Ceepak & Boyle series but well written and suspenseful. He has jumped to the ranks of my favorite authors list quickly!
    Disappointing
I listened to this book after Tilt-A-Whirl. Where TAW was written in a Carl Hyancinth style with characters that were entertaining this book tried to be more "realistic" . The result was for me the typical formula thriller. The characters were stereotypical, the dialog was atrocious, the story moved slowly. While I would recommend TAW to anyone who is a fan of Christopher Moore, Carl Hyacinth, this one should be left on the shelf (virtual shelf)
Darker than Ceepak but just as well told
I love the John Ceepak novels and figured if this was also by Chris Grabenstein, it had to be good. Not the least bit disappointed. Slay Ride is definitely darker and grizzlier than the Ceepack series so be ready for that. Moves along with a 'can't put it down pace' and Jeff Woodman does a terrific job of all these very different voices. I do recommend.
    I Thoroughly Enjoyed the Ride
I totally enjoyed Slay Ride, by Chris Grabenstein. The narrator, Jeff Woodman, did a wonderful job as well, and although I am French, I really loved listening to his Russian words :)
I would totally recommend this book to anyone looking for a good audiobook. It's only 8 hours long, for those listeners who don't like long stories, which of course wasn't long enough for me. I love a good 15-20+ hour long audiobook as I listen quite often in my car. Although some parts of the story have some graphic language and scenes, it all went with the story quite well.
A+ to you both - I will definitely listen to more books written by Chris Grabenstein and narrated by Jeff Woodman!
