    Audie Award, Original Work, 2013
Kip Weiler is a self-destructive, washed-up, middle-aged professor. Once a superstar of the literary set, he has bottomed out after years of drinking and not writing anything worth a damn. As the novel begins, hes teaching classes at a small, rural community college. Kip's talent, money, and chances have just about run out, when he rescues a classroom full of his students from a deranged student gunman who opens fire and takes the class hostage.
As a result of the subsequent media attention, Kip gets an invitation to join a bizarre club-cult with members who have a near-religious fascination with handguns. His involvement with this group - and a simultaneous fling with a "spectacular" and sexually adventurous student of his named Renee - rekindles his passion and his creative-writing energy.
But just when his muse returns, Kip Weilers life takes an even more insane and deadly turn. Kip begins to write a new novel called Gun Church, and things begin to happen in the real world that parallel his novel in progress. By mid-book its impossible to know where the art stops and the life or, in some cases, death begins. Can the very thing that gave Kip back his life take it so quickly away?
    Critic Reviews:
Reed Farrel Coleman is again operating at a very high level in Gun Church. Narrated by a failed writer who has notions of literary redemption suddenly sparked awake again, it is an audaciously plotted adventure in the unglamorous America. Coleman has a lot to say about the psychology of a writer's life, ethics or their absence, and a great eye for the world around us. It is a confessional but propulsive novel, bizarre at times, touching, expertly paced and fresh. (Daniel Woodrell, author of Winters Bone and Tomato Red)
If this is church, I might start going. Sign me up as a parishioner. (Don Winslow, New York Times best-selling author of Savages)
Colemans Gun Church is wonderful. His protagonist, Kip Weiler, is one of the most fascinating characters in years. (David Morrell, New York Times best-selling author of The Brotherhood of the Rose)

THE MAN WHO BELIEVES HE'S SEEN IT ALL IS A BLIND F
    JUST LIKE THAT BUT DIFFERENT
This has been compared to Fight Club and Fight Club is even mentioned in the book. This is not Fight Club, it is better. I read Fight Club, liked it, but liked this just a little better. It is a strange concept, people shooting at each other for fun, but so is fist fighting.
DID YOU PLANT THAT IN MY HEAD OR DID I PLANT IT IN YOURS?
This book will play with your head. Just when you think you know what is going on, you don't. There are lots of twists and turns, which keeps the story from getting stale. This is a book within a book. The author mentions dream sequences and how they are a crutch for some writers. I have always hated dream sequences, so was glad to hear why they are used so often.
BAD NEWS IS BETTER THEN NO NEWS
There are some weakness to the story which kept it from getting the fifth star. I like sex, I like it a lot, but I really found the amount of sex this guy is getting with the ST. PAULY Girl to be a bit unbelievable. Where was this chick when I went to school? It also has an element that I really hate, that in which something happens and all the readers go, what was that, but the main character makes up some poor excuse for ignoring the obvious, happens more then once.

Left for dead after an epic shootout that blew the lid off a billion-dollar conspiracy, ex-cop Charlie Hardie quickly realizes that when you're dealing with The Accident People, things can get worse. Drugged, bound, and transported by strange operatives of unknown origin, Hardie awakens to find himself captive in a secret prison that houses the most dangerous criminals on earth.

And any attempt to escape triggers a "death mechanism" that will kill everyone - including a group of innocent guards. Faced with an unworkable paradox, and knowing that his wife and son could be next on the Accident People's hit list, Hardie has only one choice: fight his way to the heart of this hell hole and make a deal with the Devil himself.

Amazing Mind Freak of a Wild Story â Brutal and Action Packed
Iâve read several of D.S.âs books. Some are very good some straightforward crime fiction (The Wheelman) and some have a funky science fiction lean (Expiration Date), but on the main they are very good reads. D.S. has some very inventive plots and does a great job with dialogue, pacing and suspense that make for very good books. This is the second of the Charlie Hardie trilogy and I was middle of the road on the first of the three books. In the first book, Charlie Hardie is a hard luck former police consultant who, after an on the job tragedy, lives his life in a bottle and house sitting for the wealthy. The firs story has him pulled into helping a Hollywood starlet defend herself from a team of super assassins. Although filled with exciting action, the story concept of the first book was a little extravagant for me so while I enjoyed the book I didnât have great affection for it. The book was just compelling enough to tease me into buying the second of the series and Iâm so glad I did. The setup of the second book is just as âout thereâ as the first but âWowâ is it a wild rollercoaster of a ride. In this second book, Hardie is semi-crippled from the fights in the first book but dumped into some strange super prison but as the new warden. A semi-dumbfound Hardie carefully tries to learn the rhythms of the facility from the guards while coming to terms with the dangers of the inmates. From there the story weaves, jags, zips and turns in ways you canât hardly keep up with. Nothing is as it seems and Hardie struggles to stay a half step ahead of his jailors in an effort to escape the prison but in most cases is half a step behind. D.S. has a field day of throwing twists and turns at the reader in many a delightful way. Coupled with D.S.âs stout writing style it makes for a fun and thrilling book to read. This outing is definitely better than the first.

    painful
    What disappointed you about Bonnie?
I found this story incredibly difficult to listen to. I waded through (as I did with the last two IJ books) just so that I would know what had happened to Bonnie. and could say a final goodbye to anything written by Iris Johansen. I don't know whether I have matured as a reader or if Iris has just given up / passed her books on to be ghost written. The habit of using
What do you think your next listen will be?
    The Snowman by Jo Nesbo
What three words best describe Jennifer Van Dyck???s performance?
solid, articulate, really, as good as possible given the material
What character would you cut from Bonnie?
i have no idea. i don't think additional characters are the issue.
    Repetition to death
I bought this audiobook based on the positive reviews and found myself being very disappointed.
I think it was the dialogue that did it for me. It was repetitious, dull, and used in excess. Fast-forwarding 10-15 minutes at a time did not matter as the characters were still harping on about the same things over and over and over and over and over again.
In short, I was bored by this book.
    Oh my goodness. :(
    What disappointed you about Bonnie?
First of all, the narrator grated on my nerves. Can't say exactly why, but you know how it is. Sometimes you really like the voice, and sometimes you don't. Secondly, I thought the plot was rather corny, the characters vague. After a while, I didn't care where the heck Bonnie was.
What was most disappointing about Iris Johansens story?
    Everything.
What didnt you like about Jennifer Van Dycks performance?
I particularly didn't like her voice of Bonnie.
You didnt love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
    None.
    The end is here
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Yes. This story tied up a lot of loose ends that were left dangling in other story lines.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
The pace was a bit slow at times. There was a lot of time spent tracking down key suspect in story. I would have liked the character relationship between Gallo and Katherine developed more.
Have you listened to any of Jennifer Van Dycks other performances before? How does this one compare?
    I enjoyed it.
Was Bonnie worth the listening time?
Yes. Finally...we know how and why and the who of Bonnie's death.
    Any additional comments?
Not what I had expected for the final story. It was a bit anticlimactic.

    Nice Christmas story
Nice feel good story filled with hope at Christmas. The narrator could have been better, she had no emotion in her voice and her pitch changes between characters was almost non-existent, especially bad for the male voices.
    Entertaining and breathtaking
The different characters personalities unfold for the reader and until the end there is doubt on how the plot will develop. Definitely I felt like listening to all in one sitting.

What does Christina Traister bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Mystery of the Effects on an Edwardian Crime
I downloaded this book from Audible during one of their recent sales. I had no previous experience with either the author or the narrator. Davina Porter does a good job. Her voice is a bit mature, but the historical inflections (Edwardian and 1930's) are quite good. It was a pleasure to listen to her read this book. A good narrator adds a whole new dimension to a story.
On to the book. This book deals with a great many issues that were significant at the time (and remain significant.
It opens with a scene in a women's prison where a prisoner is being prepared to go to her death. The viewpoint is that of a female prison warden. The prisoner is an actual historical figure, the operator of a lying-in house where women could go to give birth. She was convicted of being an accomplice in the death of at least one child left in her hands by desperate mothers. She leaves behind a daughter of her own in the care of her husband, who was not considered a party to her crimes although they lived in the same house. This scene (in the book)was written by Miss Tey, based on information provided to her by a former school mistress.
The plot is too complicated to go into more detail. However it deals with betrayal, familial love, death penalty and its unintended consequences, poverty, careers for women and social history. There's also some entertaining gossip about historical figures of the theatre.
It's important to remember that after World War I there were changes in English society. The death or disability of a good portion of a whole generation of young men left women with new responsibilities and opportunity. Sexual relationships were both more open and more divergent from the stated norm. Novels written in the period, specifically Mary Renault's contemporary set novels, supports this without having to recourse to historical sources. I thought the author handled this aspect sensitively within the themes of trust and betrayal.
Recommended for the fans of grittier mysteries. It's not light reading (or listening), but I couldn't turn it off.
(And for those who are interested, Claymore house where Amelia Sach took in her clients still stands and there is a picture of it along with the research of a descendent on the Daily Mail web site.)
    Fair Game?
I was very conflicted by the two books in this series to which I listened.

    Awsome
Would you listen to Dead by Midnight again? Why?
Yes, this book keep me guessing and held be attention until the very end.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes, after trying to guess who was the killer , I could not wait to find out who was the killer
Which character as performed by Karen White was your favorite?
    I enjoyed all the charcters
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
This book took me through all the emotions
    Any additional comments?
    A must read.
good except for the graphic sex scenes
The story was good, but there was way too much sex. I felt a little bit like I was listening to a pornographic book.
I enjoyed the twists and turns & the mystery part, but the sex was just too graphic and too much.
Much as it would be fun to go back and hear about Griffin and Nicole, I wouldn't read another of this author's books.
I felt the scenes weren't classy or romantic, just blatant and physical.
A Soap Opera intertwined w/a serial killer.
If you like soap opera banter and sex scenes this book is for you. Maleah is exhausting w/her contrite attitude. Overall, the book is tolerable but barely. The "haaaa tricked you" on the murderer was just confusing and sloppy. For the book to have led up to who was killing the conclusion was weak.
Narrator was good w/all the different voices.
    Good
The reader did a great job. The story line was good. It could have moved a little faster, though.
    Overall a good story
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
remove the explicit sexual content. It added nothing to the story.
    Any additional comments?
I would like to purchase the rest of the series but probably will not because of the explicit details, which is too bad.

A crime caper in the tradition of Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen, this fast and funny debut is the story of "Shake" Bouchon, fresh out of prison and ready for life on the straight and narrowwell, maybe after one last job....
When Charles "Shake" Bouchon, professional wheel man, walks out of prison after a three-year stretch for grand theft auto, he's got only two problems: he's too nice a guy for the life he's led and not nice enough for any other. So he says yes when he's asked to run a simple errand for his former boss and lover, Alexandra Ilandryan, the formidable pakhan of the Armenian mob in Los Angeles. All Shake has to do is deliver a package to Las Vegas and pick up a briefcase. Only the package turns out to be a wholesome young housewife named Gina whose husband has run afoul of Dick Moby, aka "The Whale", an unpleasant 400-pound Vegas strip-club owner. Shake hates to think what's going to happen to Gina when he delivers her to The Whale, so in a move that's as noble as it is boneheaded, he decides to set her free.
Now Shake and Gina are on the run to Panama, hoping to unload the very valuableand highly unusualcontents of The Whale's briefcase. Shake could end up a rich man, but first he'll have to outmaneuver two angry crime bosses, a murderous Armenian thug plagued by erectile superfunction, a former pro football player who blames Shake for his romantic woes, and a billionaire swindler with a flair for the theatrical. Not to mention, and not the least, Shake will need to survive his own heart, since he's going to discover that wholesome housewife Gina is even more intriguing, and a lot more complicated, than he ever imagined.
Full of blindsided double-crosses and hard shots to the head, Gutshot Straight is a tale of love, luck, and larceny against the odds.
    Critic Reviews:
"A highly entertaining caper novel.... Like Carl Hiaasen, Berney delights in the cartoonish. Like Elmore Leonard, he can drive a plot. What sets him apart is how well he evokes love, making the romance at the heart of this cinematic novel as compelling as the mystery." (The Boston Globe)
This book is full of crooks, murderers, Mafia, strippers, and assorted villains, and Ballerini gives each character his or her own identity. This book is smart and sexy, and easily could be turned into a movie. Nonetheless, with Ballerini's performance, you don't need a screenyou can see it come together just by listening. (AudioFile)
"The plot turns are constant, and the dialogue is sharp. The bad guys are wonderfully scary, and the localesLas Vegas and Panamaare vividly drawn. The estimable Elmore Leonard might be very pleased to call Gutshot Straight his own." (Booklist)
    Members Reviews:
    A whole lotta fun.
This book kept me chuckling and guessing all the way through it; in fact, to the very last paragraph. Mr. Berney knows how to write a thriller, and he has a great sense of humor. Mr. Balerini, though, is a truly wonderful discovery. His feel for the material is absolutely commanding. His delivery of the funny stuff is dead-on; there are lines in the book which might be just mildly funny, but he makes them sing. The plot is inventive, taking Our Hero Shake through LA, Las Vegas and all the way to Panama City. The search for the religious relic is hilarious.

fantastic, a whole new experience on audio
read this when it came out and found it very dense, but listening to it 20 years later on audio I am just blown away. great all around.
Excellent SF that has aged well
Where does Queen of Angels rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Among fiction, very high. The narrator was excellent and the story was engrossing.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked the complexity of the story and the way the author managed to make interesting characters while also introducing fascinating scientific topics (of varied fields).
What about George Guidalls performance did you like?
It was easy to tell by his intonation which character he was portraying. He got across emotion without ever seeming tawdry.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Not in one sitting (it is 19 hours long), but it was definitely a book I was always excited to get back to.
    Waaaaannnnnddddeeeerrrrssss..................
A meandering work from a great author. Paints an incredibly intricate picture of the Orwellian 1984 societal structure, decades down the road.
But if it is supposed to be a murder mystery, it becomes lost in the fog of each character's existentialism.
If the point of the wiring was to get you add list into their reality, it is a masterpiece. But if it is meant to be a murder mystery, it fails miserably.
The lack of continuity made me stop halfway through, after finding that I had stopped listening several times, and had to remind to where it had lost my interest yet again.

    Publisher's Summary:
Senta Pelham is a mirror image of Flora, the lovely marble bust Philip fanaticized about for so long. But life, like art, is not always what its mere surface suggests. And Sentas strange world of make-believe, where truth and falsehood are eerily interchangeable, soon draws Philip into a shadowy cloister of vague and uncertain terror.

    Not As Good
One of Rendell poorer entries. Still in the end memorable. Th he Bridesmaid drags on and on in a lot of chapters. At times I wanted to give up on it. Ruth Rendell must have a warped ,dark mind to come up with the characters and plots she does. That says a lot about me since she is one of my all-time favorites. This book is one I'd have soon as skipped but still will find myself thinking about . Narration is good.
    Dissapointed
I love Ruth RendeL. ...But not this book. It drug along and was boring. I recommend you try another book by this author but this one...no.
