ARRRGH!! Decent Book with World's Worst Narrator
The pace of this book is excellent, and the story is engaging, albeit a bit overdone.
But holy crap, who hired Angela Dawe as this narrator? I almost can't follow the story because she's so monstrously bad. I'm shocked to see how many books she's narrated. I don't know how anyone can stand to listen to her.
Hear for yourself. Listen to the sample. Unless it's a question (or unless she's speaking for another character), her intonation is exactly the same (especially the END of every sentence), no matter what the context.
And she clearly punctuates her sentences with pauses so that you get the full impact of each annoying repetition in the way she speaks. I find myself wishing she'd just run two sentences together so I wasn't drawn into to focus on her nightmarish delivery.
Everyone's different. If her delivery doesn't bother you, get this book. It's almost too much for me to bear.
    unreal
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Situations within the book conflict with themselves, i.e. a women in her early 30s having a lover from 20 years ago.
Has Flee turned you off from other books in this genre?
Some sense of realism, no attempt at all to make situations even seem plausible.
Would you be willing to try another one of Angela Dawes performances?
    The performance was fine
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Flee?
    Nothing specific
    Any additional comments?
    None
    Absolutely horrible
J.A. Conrad is one of my favorite authors, yet with this book something went terribly wrong. It is flighty, the plot hard to grasp and follow. I felt I was in a hallucinatory state. After suffering through about a quarter of this crazy ride I gave up to preserve what sanity I still possessed.
One of the worse narrators ever.....
Would you try another book from J. A. Konrath and Ann Voss Peterson and/or Angela Dawe?
No, I won't. The narrator was so bad - I couldn't enjoy the story. It's a shame because this might have been a great book.
What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)
Sorry, I never made it to the end.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Angela Dawe?
Anybody but her.....seriously, a cat could read this novel and put more in to it.
What character would you cut from Flee?
No clue....again, couldn't get past the awful narration.
    Any additional comments?
Try a different narrator and I might re-visit this book.
    fast paced
Action packed with good character development. Looking for the second book in series now.

    What a surprise
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, it's a complicated book with complicated characters. Nothing is easy in Flowertown.
What did you like best about this story?
The book evolved in such an unexpected way. I was increasingly drawn into the story and the characters' lives.
What about Tanya Eby???s performance did you like?
Her voice is very pleasing and she does a great job of giving the characters emotion and dimension without being overly dramatic.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
    Nothing's easy in Flowertown.
    Very Entertaining --
    Any additional comments?
Sometimes we get caught up in finding books that will rivet us, or leave us with some insight within ourselves. But books just need to tell a story and entertain, and this one does both quite well. It was well read and had great dialogue that actually made me chuckle a couple times. The writing had hints of Philip K. Dick and wove a very intriguing story.
better than your average YA post-apocalyptic tale
This book was an unusual post-apocalyptic book for a few reasons. First, the setting is unusual. The action takes place in a small, intimate area - a small town in Iowa that has a chemical spill that causes it to be quarantined off for the rest of the United States. This gives us a nice dose of nostalgia for small town Midwest and a very perceptible and easily imagined feeling for the claustrophobia, powerlessness, and despair of those trapped for seven years in Flowertown. It also puts the action on a small scale so that it is easy to believe in the ability of a few to subjugate the trapped - by controlling the media, internet, cell coverage, and supplies that are allowed into Flowertown. We don't have to imagine a world changed immeasurably.
Secondly, the heroine. She is not a stunningly beautiful (but doesn't know it) kick-ass girl just waiting for someone to love her. She is a young adult - in her early 20's. She has flaws, and hides in a haze of marijuana smoke from most of what is happening to her. She does not have magical powers and was not destined for greatness. She is not trained in combat. She does not have two guys fawning over her in a cliched love triangle. In fact, romance plays a fairly small part in the story overall. Our heroine is reluctant and flawed and human, and most of all, relatable.
What we do get is a really intimate and scary medical thriller. We get a lot of backstory told in ways that are not big static info-dumps. We get a strong sense of setting and wonderful memorable details.

    I tried but I just couldn't
I wanted to like this book. The premise sounded interesting and different so I purchased it. Yes, I had listened to the sample and knew the narrator had a southern drawl.. what it didn't say to me was.. 'Her voice hardly ever changes. No matter what the situation, be it funny or panicked or serious.. it almost always stays the same'.. This in turn makes it seems like the chapters I have listened to have all run together in one big sentence. The characters are flat, don't know if this is because of the narration itself or because they are just that..flat. I do know however that I was having a hard time deciphering the ppl because the narrator made them all the same.. blending them all together in one big whirlpool. I did try to get past this.. hoping she would get better as the book evolved and I hate to say it, I am on 5 hours of listening and I don't think, no, actually - I know - that I can no longer put myself through it. Those are 5 hours my ears will never get back. Even thinking about turning it on again sends a cringe down my spine. Would rather have a pinched nerve. ( ok just trying to express my distaste and telling you it is not worth it) IF the book is good, it might be better on paper. Having Madeline Lambert read it is the biggest mistake that was made. Definate Thumbs Down...
    narrator ruined this for me
What disappointed you about Playing Dead?
I am not a native Texan but have lived in Fort Worth for over 20 years. No one in Fort Worth has the accent that this reader used. I was really looking forward to this novel because I have read the author's work in the Fort Worth Star Telegram for a long time. I was extremely disappointed in the reader and the story itself fell flat. I never came to care about the characters and nothing rang true for me.

    Key West is great
An excellent story with a deep knowledge of the Keys
but PLEASE get reader who can speak Spanish
    A fun romp Hiaasen style.
I have been struggling to find great listening experiences, especially since I tend to listen to so many books. So I looked up books read by George Wilson and discovered a few books by Hiaasen I havent tried. Wilson is a master at delivering the humor and irony Hiassen is famous for.
Trap Line is set in the Florida Keys of the early 1980s. Its a clever, romantic, funny expose' of the travesty of the ecosystem devestated by private and government greed and mishandling.
Try this if you need a good laugh, despite the fact your world may be spinning out of control.
not your typical Hiassen book, but worth it
What did you like best about this story?
    I always love Hiassen charactors.
    Any additional comments?
I was expecting more twisted, dark humor which is Hiassen's trademark. This book was well crafted, well read, and a good story, but nothing unexpected, really, and nothing like the usual twisted free for all that he can create.
    Big fan of Carl Hiassan
Would you listen to Trap Line again? Why?
Probably not although I enjoyed the story.
    Any additional comments?
Story line takes place in the 80's; suspense and characters interesting and, with exception of old technology references, still great.
    Could not stop listening!
I must confess; I have been hooked Carl Haison's books from the first one. Thanks.

    Fill in your history gap
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I recommend this especially to fans of the narrator Jonathan Keeble, he gives voice to Cal Jardine and the characters in an unfogettable fashion, his narration kept me going through some of the slower parts of the story. The American history version of the Spanish Civil War could take some lessons from Jack Ludlow's writing style, he made a rather nebulous footnote in our history books into a compelling story of factions in-fighting, Nazi's invading, regular people in the villages confused and dazed about the goings-on in their own country.
What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?
As with many of his books for me the interesting part is filling in my missing history information, he takes relatively obscure (in textbooks) periods of history and brings them to life, his series on the Norman's in Italy is compelling listening and caused me to download maps and more maps to trace the comings and goings of the armies. This book about the Spanish Civil War certainly gave life to the characters helping me make better sense of the struggles of the Spanish prior to the World War. Some of the incidents however were a bit overwrought, the struggles for a village square or a town marketplace seemed designed to fill in space rather than move the story forward.
What does Jonathan Keeble bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
His voice and inflections bring the characters to life, he can be serious, playful and inquisitive all with a gravitas I enjoy.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
    no
    Any additional comments?
I enjoy the author's writing and the narrator's ability to bring the words to life.

    Terrible Narrator
Would you try another book from Martha Powers and/or Becky Boyd?
    No
Would you ever listen to anything by Martha Powers again?
    Probably not.
What didnt you like about Becky Boyds performance?
    Amatuerish and monotone.
Was Conspiracy of Silence worth the listening time?
    No
    Any additional comments?
I am impatient with filler material. I don't know if there is some minimum goal of words/pages for a novel, but this book had so many useless details, ie. she got out of the shower, grabbed a towel, looked in the mirror, dried herself, hung the towel on the rod, walked to the closet, etc., that I wanted to seriously edit the thing!
This is the worst narrator I have ever heard
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
A different narrator. She did not change her voice at all for the different characters. Most of the time, I couldn't tell who was talking, they all sounded the same. It made it difficult to follow the story.
Has Conspiracy of Silence turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, but I will never listen to anything done by Becky Boyd again.
How could the performance have been better?
It is a shame for the book, because it might have been a good story, but the narrator just murdered it. I couldn't finish it because I could not stand her voice. It was flat, no intonation or emotion put into it at all. I can't believe someone actually paid her to read it.
    Any additional comments?
I am sorry that I wasted a credit on this audiobook. People should be warned about this narrator.
Worst narrator EVER!! Beware of Becky Boyd!
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Had the story been better. Perhaps Becky Boyd's inept reading caused the story to be worse than it really is.
What was most disappointing about Martha Powerss story?
    Premise
Would you be willing to try another one of Becky Boyds performances?
I will NEVER try anything by Becky Boyd again. If the book is appealing, I will buy the book rather than listen to her horrible rendition! I have never written a review before but people should be warned about this narrator.
    Horrible narrator
Is there anything you would change about this book?
A different narrator would make this book a much easier listen.

    Publisher's Summary:
A thrilling Knopf New Face of Fiction debut, A Cold Night for Alligators takes the listener on a breathtaking ride through the seedy, sensual Florida Everglades, unravelling a mystery at the heart of which lies a devastating family secret.
Twenty-six-year-old Jasper hasn't seen or heard from his older brother, Coleman, in over 10 years. Not since Coleman walked through the back gate one morning, leaving behind a distraught family concerned by his increasingly outlandish behaviour. Now Jasper's life has come to an impasse - he has settled into a rather stultifying existence as a corporate drone, living with a girlfriend he doesn't quite know how to break up with. Until a freak accident and strange phone call change everything.
With little more to go on than a random phone call, Jasper follows his brother's trail southward into the Florida Everglades where a family mystery from his childhood may hold the key to Coleman's disappearance. Accompanied by brawny, devout Donny and the extremely eccentric Duane, Jasper embarks on a series of misadventures involving a gorgeous swamp moll, an estranged aunt, and alligator poachers as he gets deeper into his search for his brother. All roads seem to lead to Uncle Rolly Lee, a rock-and-rolling swamp rat whose rather rough exterior belies an even rougher interior. Can Jasper uncover the secrets of the past and find his brother before he gets mired in the swamp and the machinations of Rolly Lee?
Populated with unforgettable characters and a suspense-filled story at its heart, A Cold Night for Alligators is a first novel about loss, hope and the ties that bind family together.
    Critic Reviews:
"An excellent debut... The action of A Cold Night for Alligators ticks along nicely, the dialogue and characters are interesting, funny and believable, and the story is suspenseful. Nick Crowe is to be commended - this new writer has come out with an old-fashioned page-turner. (Edmonton Journal)

sublime story- good mystery- funny characters
I really liked this story. The middle dragged on a bit, but it turned out to be very necessary. It's well written and well narrated. It's stars off quickly and keeps you guessing, but best of all it all get wrapped up in the end without those pesky loose ends. Loved it.
    Had to keep listening!
What made the experience of listening to A Cold Night for Alligators the most enjoyable?
I got this book mainly because it was read by RC Bray, probably my favorite narrator. But I was suprised how much I liked the story and how much it kept me interested. I spent far too long today to finish it, I just had to get to the end!
Which character as performed by R. C. Bray was your favorite?
I liked the main character of course. But Mr. Bray read Donny with such sensitivity and Duane with such hilarity it was hard not to like them too. The Canadian accents were spot on! And Rollie Lee, deliciously bad! So, no one fave I guess!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The back story that was woven throughout was very moving to me, I found myself on the edge of my seat each time a reflection came up. I just had to know what happened way back when that got Coleman to this point!
    Any additional comments?
If you like RC Bray you will like this book. But one of my measurements is "would I read it myself"? The answer is yes. I truly enjoyed it.
