    Had hoped ...
Had hoped the author would have done something about the repetitive "said (pause) nightingale" but alas no. Story good but more repetitive and predictable than the first.
Why didn't Leather just extend the first book?
What did you like best about Midnight? What did you like least?
Paul Thornley's performance is probably the most redeeming aspect of this audiobook. The book just feels like the author wanted to leave the previous book on a cliffhanger to ensure that readers would be demanding the next book in the series but he didn't really have another storyline and instead just regurgitated the first book again, changing a few details here and there
What could Stephen Leather have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I found this book very frustrating anyway, the fact that you can almost predict what is going to happen because its just a rehash of the first, but one of the most annoying facts is that regardless what happens none of the characters actually learn anything, instead keep having the same debates, falling for same tricks and and it leaves you just banging your head in frustration, and as for Nightingales complete incomprehension of the UK smoking laws, if I was reading the book one more "Can I smoke in here?" and I would have probably thrown it!
What does Paul Thornley bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you had only read the book?
Without Thornley's strong voice acting and captive narration I probably wouldn't have stuck with the book, the story has bored me but at least the voice acting is captivating
    Any additional comments?
A great shame, I will probably leave the series here but I had a lot of hope for it when listening to the first book, having seen a couple of reviews for the third that say that it is more of the same I will probably just call it a day after Midnight
Read with full. Stops in all the. Wrong places.
Would you try another book written by Stephen Leather or narrated by Paul Thornley?
I enjoyed the story but the listening experience was marred by weird placing of verbal full stops, especially after speech.
This story is going to hell Stephen Leather
This is a fairly pedestrian story that rehashes the first book but in a much more tedious way. I would firmly suggest avoiding this book.
    Disappointing
    Any additional comments?
I loved the first book in this series and although the end to book one was a little poor I still had high hopes for this book. But sadly the author seems to have taken all that was wrong with the ending of book one and come up with this!
Demons who seem quite nice and very easy to fool along with a predictable story-line mean I will not be listing to any more in this series.

YES, this is the audiobook you must pick!
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I could not stop listening to this book. It is wonderful. I just finished. I haven't been able to do anything except listen to this book. Excellent narration by Peter Firth. I loved it. I loved all the emotion - horror of war and passionate love. And great lines and so much to think about...... Can I collect my thoughts?!
This book has everything. It is exciting and horribly moving and oh so wonderful. It is like life: full of the worst and most wonderful.
There are lines you must ponder. Why does one fight in a war? Who do we fight for? Do you fight for your land, your family, your friends....or for those comrades who have fought and died next to you? You are in the trenches and in tunnels, in the middle of bombardments. You are in a tunnel and you may be suffocated and buried alive. This book is about fear. This book is about the warfare of WW1.
But there is humor and passionate love too. Their is death and there is birth. There is hope and despair. The story takes place during WW1 in the trenches in France. It also has events set later, in the 70s. Most authors cannot switch between different time periods. In this book the two are wonderfully intertwined.
This book rips you apart, scares you to death, rolls you in passionate, sensual love, one minute has you giggling and then later pondering the essence of life and death and fear. The book is an emotional roller coaster. And you will learn what it was really like to fight in the first world war. You can swallow the horror because it is balanced by humor and love and passion and even hope and happiness.
Ooops, I think I am gushing!
Didn't live up to my expectations
I was very much looking forward to reading this book set in a period which fascinates me, the early 20th century and WWI, and had big expectation considering it was the recipient of many awards and mentions and seemed to be highly appreciated by many people on LibraryThing. Though there were many elements there to hold my attention, I never quite connected with the story or the characters. Stephen Wraysford finds himself on a business visit in Amiens, France in 1910, where he quickly falls in love with his host's wife, Isabelle Azaire. She is the much younger wife of a local textile baron with whom she has little in common, and in no time at all she and Stephen are exploring their passion and sexuality in very explicit erotic interludes which had me blushing and simultaneously worried I'd picked an erotica book by mistake. As the author probably deliberately planned, the reality of war and trench warfare comes in stark contrast to this love affair.

    A HEARTBEAT AWAY
As a critical care RN, I can see this being an easy reality. Americans need to realize how easily this could happen anywhere and anytime. As a work of fiction -- excellant
Well worth the cost and time. Great Story.
If you could sum up A Heartbeat Away in three words, what would they be?
    Entertaining, interesting, and exciting.
What was one of the most memorable moments of A Heartbeat Away?
When they discovered the living person from the research trials. It gave hope and continued excitement to the story.
What about Robert Petkoffs performance did you like?
He was clear, consistent, and showed emotion / excitement without over doing it.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
Scientific thriller that could actually happen anytime and anywhere in our present world.
    Any additional comments?
Great story line and plenty of excitement.
Far too many holes and a bad love story
Robert Petkoff reads the book quite well, which I enjoyed. He was able to provide some very distinct voices for each character that did not feel forced or too heavy-handed. The book itself is a fantastic idea that I loved at first but the more this book goes on the more giant - gaping - holes in the overall story. I do not want to spoil anything but will say there are times when I just shook my head and thought "Really? Did he really just write that?". The two main characters in the book are great separately but there is a very obvious love story that just was just plain silly and thinking back on it just makes me whince.

However, his most important collection of prophetic verses has remained hidden...until now.

    Not Worth Your Time
I was looking forward to this book as I enjoyed the previous three by this author. Dick Hill as always read this perfectly; that said, this book really never went anywhere or ever explained some of the earlier mysteries in the book. Also, I'm not sure if others had this problem but near the end of the book on at least two occasions there was a "dead spot" in the recording that lacked sound for at least 5 seconds or so. Not a huge issue but annoying. Overall, just not all that good.
    Kuzneski: fabulous, as usual
With "The Prophecy" -- Kuzneski's fifth Payne/Jones novel -- the author continues his winning streak of highly entertaining, intelligent stories. Even though Kuzneski gives us far-fetched plots, we willing suspend disbelief just for the fun and entertainment he provides. We can't help but love the relationship between best friends and co-protagonists Payne and Jones, with their witty dialogue, and the perfect way in which they work together on their missions. These guys are TOUGH -- seemingly indestructible (although Payne does suffer a minor bullet wound this time around) -- and they always thwart the bad guys, yielding a very satisfying read every time. The narrator, Dick Hill, has a slight tendency to over-act, but otherwise does a good job of voicing all the characters. I recommend "The Prophecy" to any thriller-lover, to anyone in need of good escape-fiction, and to any Nostradamus aficionado.
    Enjoyable ride
This book is enjoyable and easy to listen to. A fun story with little depth. I was only dissappointed with 2 chapters where the audio just cuts off mid sentence and then continues on into the next chapter. Not having the words in front of me, I'm not sure what/if I missed anything. Since the story is simple, it ultimately did not effect the listen, just annoying.
    Prophetic Review
Not too many BOT make me laugh out loud for real, but this one did, and for good reasons. It is witty, fast moving, and Dick Hill owns Payne and Jones. Hill clearly has a feel for these characters, and the story moves them along in a variety of directions that keep the listeners interest right to the ( slightly ) disappointing finish.
Kuzneski can get a bit graphically violent, but the characters are so compelling it makes up for it.
    Recommended.
One of my favorite books of the year
Kuzneski writes a great book - the play or banter between best friends Payne and Jones is awesome. very similar to John Corey in Demille's books.

Robinson returns to form and believability
Robinson's book two in the Mack Bedford series is quite a bit more realistic and plausible than book one. There are troubling things in this series so far and in this work in particular. First, the first 3 hours are a monologue of the narrator telling not showing. All interesting information but without any meaningful dialog, it is a bit tedious. By half way, the dialog was a little better; but still tedious -- it did pick up near the end. Also, by the half way mark the main character is barely involved -- his involvement is setup, but no real action until well into act II.
As to the story line, the premise hangs together rather nicely. However, if you favor left wing politics, I think you are going to be put off. Robinson goes out of his way to paint left-wing politics in a much less than reasonable light. If you are politically right or a centrist you'll think it okay. I normally wouldn't mention politics in a tech-thriller but Robinson makes so may cutting remarks it has to be mentioned.
The narration is very good. As always, the portrayal of the US Navy Seals is fabulous. I am a fan of Robinson. The first book in the series was substandard, this one was average -- perhaps he is on a trajectory. We'll see. I recommend reading at least the abridged version, that ought to cut out much of the political commentary -- but I am still a fan.
    Satisfying thriller, good reader
Patrick Robinson is an unabashed right-wing extremist, with clear symptoms of testosterone poisoning, unapologetic approval of presidents Bush and Reagan, and uncompromising hard-line opinions. He also writes consistently rip-roaring good thrillers, all of which I have read ??? and will continue to read ??? despite my disagreement with his politics. In each novel, Robinson intelligently examines some important political/military issue ??? and, I have to admit, makes a pretty good case for his opinion and proposed solution. In "Intercept," he poses the question: Do terrorists deserve due process? And he performs a thought experiment, in which liberal human-rights activists force the United States government to grant accused terrorists court trials ??? with defense attorneys ??? according to United States law. Since the detainees' guilt cannot be proved beyond a reasonable doubt, two Afghan terrorists are released from the Guantanamo Bay facility, only to begin planning another heinous attack ... this time on a United States Jewish school. Of course, that sets the stage for Robinson's hero, Navy S.E.A.L., Lt. Commander Mack Bedford, to step in and save the world ... again. Mr.

    Narrator ruins book
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
I enjoyed the book but the reader made it unpleasant.
Would you be willing to try another one of Cristine McMurdo-Walliss performances?
No! I will skip anything that she is listed as the reader.
    Any additional comments?
The reader sounded like she was eating the whole time she was reading. I could hear her breathing and swallowing throughout. She didn't use different "voices" for the different characters.
Would be a good read only
Sounds like the narrator is chewing gum. Very distracting! It's a good story with a poor performance.
    The narrator!
I've read and listened to Lisa Jackson books for years and always look forward to them. This one was not enhanced by the narrator. While the voices and inflections were good, the constant swallowing sounds were so distracting. It truly sounds like she has the worst case of dry-mouth ever!
    Chewing gum???
Honestly, Im not even done with the book. I just had to write a review to warn people. I cant even tell you at this point what Ive listened to, Im so distracted by the narrator i cant concentrate on the story. The narrator- lets just put aside her 5 pack a day smokers voice, which is difficult in and of itself but what is driving me bat sh*t crazy is the fact that every character sounds like they are chewing gum. So, Im trying to listen to the story but find myself more focused on figuring out if she has gum in her mouth, maybe for the purpose of keeping her throat wet so she doesnt start hacking up a lung, or does she have an over abundance of saliva that she has a hard time swallowing. By the time I realize that Ive zone out of the story and am more focused on the narrator, Ive missed a bunch of the book.
Its extremely distracting and I dont know if Ill be able to even finish the book.
This book was great! Not so the Narrator!
This was a surreal story, a wonderful idea! My Only problem is with this Narrator. You can hear her smacking her lips, they sound dry. She can be heard swallowing noisily. Add in the breathing heavily and it's just Gross!

    Echo Platoon
I served in the Navy at the same time as Dick Marcinko and retired as a Mustang naval officer after almost 33 years of naval service. I spent a little longer as an enlisted sailor than Dick, topping out as a Master Chief Signalman before becoming a Warrant Boatswain and then a Limited Duty Officer after which I shifted to the unrestricted line so I could command a ship.
This book, like all of Dick's adventures, is a mix of fiction inspired by true experiences. A pleasure to read as all of his books take me back to when I was on active duty. Although I was not a Seal, their exploits as painted in Dick's salty prose hark me back to all the great times I enjoyed in my career.
A must read for all sailors, and for those other folks who wished they had chosen the Navy from which to serve our country.

    Four Stars
good book/series. red cell is the best
    Superman Ego
Good Read. But he left a lot of un-answer question. What happen to General Cooker and where was the after action follow up. Also he did the same thing in the assault on the oil rig as in the previous books. I know he always wants to lead from the front, but even a good leader know when he needs to let the younger team members take the lead. This book was more about the superman ego of Richard's than what a real leader with all his experience would do.
    Always the Rogue
Echo Platoon is just like those before it. Lots of blood, guts, cussing and thrill. Nothing here is new except the people who get killed. People should read this book if 1) they want to know more about the capabilities of the military, 2) they want to learn a little more about what happens around the world, 3) the just enjoy plain old action adventures. Stay away from the book if fair writing and extreme use of foul language bothers you. I would prefer Marcinko to quit making asides to his editor during the story. It only seems to help fill up pages. I would also prefer he stay within the action once it starts and identifies people and past events within another part of the book. Once the the hunter is after the prey and the killing begins, stay there.

If you could sum up Snagged in three words, what would they be?
Quick paced story, I never noticed that I bought the abridged version....so that was depressing. That means I missed some part of the story. I never buy abridged not sure how this one slipped by me but, a little more story would have been really good. Got to get the unabridged version.
    Which scene was your favorite?
Eben and Bessie bantering back and forth when tied in the bed.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes and did. Very, very relaxing book. When you need to relax it does it. Way too short though.
    Great book
I really enjoyed it. The storyline was interesting. I got a bit confusing at the end. How can they work on some for a week and suddenly other new pairs fall apart.

One of the Best So Far
This is one of my favorite Allison Brennan books so far. "Sudden Death" is suspenseful, exciting and keeps you turning those pages until the end - which always seems to come too soon in Ms. Brennan's books.
The hardest thing about finishing a book you love is saying goodbye to the characters. Thankfully, that's not a big issue with Allison Brennan's books because they continue to turn up in future books. It allows you a peek into how their lives keep progressing past their own book. I'm especially happy when member of the Kincaide family pop up as well as Hans Vigo, the FBI profiler. I'm really hoping he gets his own book soon with his true love story. He may be older but love knows no age, right? Speaking of age, I'm also happy that the main characters in these books are not all 22 but in their 30's and 40's.
"Sudden Death" has an exciting, smart plot, excellent character development, a great love story and everything you could want in a great read. Buy it now!
Not My Favorite But I'm Biased
This is my 13th Allison Brennan book having read all four trilogies and one stand alone. I have to admit that when I began this book, I became worried I wouldn't like it and that I was going to be offended as it starts out with characters who are extreme activists for animal and environmental rights and do violent, illegal things. I even skipped to the acknowledgments to see if Ms. Brennan had thanked anyone involved with animal or environmental rights and whether she had sought out their perspective. I didn't see that and that made me even more worried how this book would portray an issue I care deeply about - I am an animal rights activist and like most activists, believe in non-violence for all beings. But I continued on and was relieved to find that the story geared away from that and focused more on extremists with psychopathy.
The plot was good though not as exciting as previous books. This one was a bit more predictable but I still enjoyed the main character, Nora, and getting to know Duke Rogan. If I had to rank the books I've read so far, this one would fall at the bottom but I would be the first to say (as I wrote) that I am biased and that may be a factor. I think it would have been nice to have it clarified that the majority of people who believe that animals should not be killed for unnecessary things like food or clothing (and yes, even medical research) are not crazy or extreme but compassionate.

    Relaxing entertainment
All the ingredients for a classic murder mystery - English aristocratic country house, many suspects with possible motives, detective with hidden talents and, of course, a butler. If you love detective stories maybe a little predictable, so four stars for story, but this does not make it any the less enjoyable.
No need for violence or horror, just light hearted and amusing with wonderful narration by Cornelius Garrett. His skill in making each character clearly distinguishable is amazing. Excellent entertainment and highly recommended.
It appears to be the third of a series, I hope the others will also be available on audible soon. This was a very good sale bargain, but I would happily pay full price for this author and narrator.
    Entertaining Escapism
Cornelius Garrett is simply brilliant in his reading. HIs accents and style bring this light novel to life. I like the way he took me to a fascinating world of manners, luxury and quirkiness. Lots of fun.
    Absolutely delightful listen!
What made the experience of listening to The Affair of the Thirty Nine-Cufflinks the most enjoyable?
One of the best narrations I have ever heard. The plot is witty and the dialogue occasionally makes you chuckle out loud. The sound quality is also good - that is all to often not the case even when downloading in enhanced format.
What about Cornelius Garrett???s performance did you like?
CG gives every character his or hers own special voice and he knows the value of pausing to let the dialogue sink in without being at all slow!
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Absolutely!
    Any additional comments?
Please audible - do give us more from this mystery series a true delight!
    Superbly Told
I've read two other James Anderson humorous mysteries and decided it would be fun to listen to one read. The mystery twists are enjoyable. But what elevated this storytelling was the narrator, Cornelius Garrett with his distinct voices for every single character. Not one was the same, even with a few soft toned women speakers, a few direct ones, an American, all the men of different character, professions and classes. Accents, tones, pacing. Absolutely delightful. Let him read me anything British. Garrett's repertoire of voices defined Anderson's storytelling.
Amazing and funny, full of period detail
If Agatha Christie and P. G. Wodehouse had collaborated on a mystery novel, this would have been the result. Great fun!
