Very dissapointing

This was my first and my last book of M.C Beaton. I gave it a try , due to the mostly positive reviews, but after I started that book and simply could not ge into it ( 1 chapter , another chapter and just to be sure a third chapter ) I was pretty sure my disappointment was a correct feeling.

The characters were unbelievable and quite frankly annoying. The main H was not likable from the beginning on and his sudden change in mind that he was deeply in love with his wife, which he before treated rude and selfish, was simply unbelievable.

The h was a whining young girl , who, even when she tried to be the strong heroine was not believable at all.

I only finished that book, because I don't like to stop a book without finishing, but with this one I had to struggle. The only reason , why I gave two stars instead of one was the mystery part of the novel , which was the best part of the entire book.

Mean Era

This story included some domestic aggression that's not usually found in these fun, frivolous tales, and the cruel Regency behavior made me cringe a couple of times. Fortunately, those who needed it received their comeuppances, and the hero and heroine learned a lot about themselves had their happily ever after.

Odd and Gothic

This was a well written but very strange gothic historical romance of indeterminate time period. It is advertised as a Regency, but has motorcars and speaks of the Victorian era as being in the past. That last may in fact be correct, I am not exactly sure when the reign of Victoria actually occurred but it just sounded odd. This was a murder mystery sort of story and by the end I just wanted to wrap up the poor heroine in a warm blanket and hide her away from the world. An interesting story, but extremely odd.

Too Silly

This romance was a little too silly. Kitty was just an annoying character. She's timid as a mouse, then all the sudden she's a dragon lady. Her husband is all over the place too. The whole book is all over the place. I would say M C Beaton's writing must have greatly improved since his one was written.

This one is also very short, more a novella than a full length novel.

I wouldn't recommend this particular book. I have read another of M.C. Beaton's early romances and it was better.

Interesting

I had not previously read any of these books, but I enjoyed it immensely. The story was very good. I laughed a lot. Her style took a little getting used to,but I really enjoyed this book.

Amusing if a bit Strange

I never know what kind of story I am going to get when I open a Marion Chesney book. Sometimes they are dark, sometimes they are light, and sometimes they are just plain strange. This book was rather dark and somewhat strange. There is no sex, so high-sticklers ignore the title. The book is extremely well-written, the characters seem very true to life, which is a mixed blessing. The end is somewhat chopped off. I really would have liked to have seen Lucy give her mother-in-law the set-down she deserved. All throughout the novel I wanted to shake Lucy. No one is that innocent and naive. I understand the Times were what they were, but still. The man was an absolute pig. Still, a very good book. Highly recommended for all Regency Romance lovers.

Enjoyable

Lots of twists and turns, handsome, arrogant hero, lovely, dainty heroine and very wicked villains - the perfect regency romantic story.

A good "Feel Good" book.

The book was good reading to enjoy,but one had to realize that reality was a bit stretched. Lady Lucy's Lover is a good "escapism" read.

Her novels never cease to bring me enjoyment

I loved the scenes hero saves heroine. He was in love and he would do anything to claim her.

I love this read!!!! I love a good Regency Romance and Ms. Beaton wrote a good one in this read. (I only recommend if you understand the period of when it was written as it explains why characters acted certain way.) The hero is a strong alpha male that dresses as a dandy. So heroine doesn't take him seriously at first. Hero doesn't let that stop him, he fall instantly for heroine and is hot in pursuit.

'Silken Bonds' is part 2 of a series but can be read stand alone. Hero falls instantly for the heroine but her guardian has taught her that being with a man is weakness. So hero pulls all the stops to court her. He will bribe staff, ask former interest to play act a role to get close to the family, he buys house next door to her, he watches/stalks her, he finds out what she likes and does what he needs to do to keep her interested in seeing him, he will beg, he will try seduce, he will be her knight in shinning armor, and he will keep saving her countless times form dangers so he can finally claim her as his own.

The book has several twist and turns. This includes some scary situations that require he to save heroine several times, because her family has jewels would-be thiefs want. I loved these scenes, especially the final scene. He may look like a dandy but he fought like a man!!! He is older and more experienced. Heroine is nave and innocent, but was raised to think like a man. So hero has to be creative to try to win her over, but he is really all for equal rights and proves to her that he wants her as his equal!!!

The other subplot is they are trying to find out who her biological parents are but find that someone doesn't want them to know. I found this read exciting because of the action scenes, extremes hero goes to be able to see heroine and who doesn't want to read a dashing gentleman save a heroine :) There is strong chemistry between H/h and he is very romantic at times when thinking/describing her. However, all love scenes are behind closed doors. Most is heavy petting and kisses. It is a safe reads. Hero is loyal but his promiscuous past does come several times up. He makes sure heroine knows he only wants her several times. I believed him, because of the extremes he goes to win her over.

Highly recommend this read!

Intricately plotted and quite well-written

All of Grant's books are worth reading, despite the unmitigated gall of her latest publisher in forcing her to alter the main characters' names partway through the series. The characters are complex human beings in emotionally trying situations, and the focus is on the cost of speaking truth and the inherent unknowability of the people we think we know. The author is miles better than most historical mystery/romance novelists, and I recommend her work highly. On another note: I've read a number of people commenting that they believe the Charles+Melanie/Malcolm+Suzanne series should be read in publication order. The problem with that is how many spoilers you get stuck with. Grant's website gives the chronological order for the first few books: His Spanish Bride, Vienna Waltz, Imperial Scandal, Paris Affair, Beneath a _____ Moon, Secrets of a Lady/A Daughter of the Game, Mask of ___.

Excellent sequel to Vienna Waltz

I donât think the title is particularly appropriate, since the only empire involved in the action of the book is Napoleonâs, and it isnât involved in any of the scandalous doings. (At least, I donât think that Britain officially became an empire until Victoria became Em-press of India, and that was well after 1815. And Russia and Austria-Hungary, which were empires involved in the Napoleonic Wars, werenât involved in the battle of Waterloo.) The action of this book takes place over the space of a couple of weeks bracketing Waterloo, beginning with the murders of a French informant of Malcolm Rannochâs and the wife of a young British officer on the night of a ball in Brussels given by the wife of a high-ranking British officer. At first the attack (which also targeted Malcolm and Harry Davenport, another British intelligence agent, though they werenât harmed) was blamed on the French on the assumption that theyâd found out about the informant and the woman had been an accidental victim, but other informants among the French espionage community say that they hadnât found out about his identity in time. It seems to involve a plethora of adulterous activities, including an old one by Harry Davenportâs wife, who was the older sister of the murdered woman.

Slow and dragging until the end, it got better then but it was to little to late.

So disappointed!

I thought this book was going to draw me in and keep me enthralled, but to my regret no! I skipped through most of it to the end just to finish. I couldn't take anymore, it was that boring and horrible. Not worth a credit.

What made the experience of listening to Highland Wolf the most enjoyable?

This story was full of mystery and intrigue. I loved Roman and Tara's relationship as they were a great contrast to one another. The narration again was fabulous- dynamic, touching and she highlighted the humor very well with lots of diverse character voices. I am devouring this series and loving every minute of it! Thank you Lois Greiman!

Ok but not one I'd recommend

Story line didn't hold my attention. Did NOT appreciate Gemma Johansson's performance. Some of the characters were grating others pathetic.

I rarely write reviews but I have promised myself to start writing them and this was just the book to start with! I loved it! Maybe I was a little hormonal for the last two or three chapter but I actually cried, enough to need a tissue and I never cry! Not only did I cry but I laughed, a lot as well.

Love the scene or chapter were Roman was near death, all the family was standing vigil at his bed side. Pheona had to take Tara to task and give her some kind, loving and insistant words of advice.

Interesting plot and characters

The performance of this book is average at best. Ms Wiley's range isn't exceptional. My biggest problem was that Hilary often sounded like Glinda the Good Witch from The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. After listening to about 1/3rd of the book, I bought the Kindle.

This is the first in the Westruthers series, but I think it is a branch off from something else. Secondary characters were introduced in such a way that I felt I should have known their stories.

The book could have been improved by the deletion of some scenes, and the subplot could have been more fully developed. And then there's the sex. Don't get me wrong! I like sex scenes as much as the next person, but there wasn't much variety, so I slid through some, since I knew how they did it. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. There's more to Jonathon Westruther, Earl of Davenport than is readily apparent. He has a three dimensional quality. Hilary deVere is beautiful, as well as having strengths to balance her insecurities. Both characters grow over the course of the novel.

This book is worth the credit if you like Elizabeth Wiley's narrative style.

Humor, Sexy Romance, Great Story

What a delightful listen this was. Jonathan, Earl of Davenport, is a gorgeous man but determined to destroy his reputation after returning from his feigned death. His cousins decide he needs some time in the country and dump him in the middle of nowhere, with nothing but his clothes, which is where he runs into Hilary DeVere who is a disheveled waif waking away from the job she just lost. Jonathan decides she must be "saved" because she's heading into a storm, and so begins their humorous and delightful courtship.

Was just lacking something.

This is my second novel by M. C. Beaton and I found it to be entertaining, but lacking a bit of something.

Annabelle has been told by her mother that she must go and stay with her godmother Emmaline and make herself a good match. Everything rides on Annabelle finding a rich husband so she can make sure her younger sisters make good matches. Annabelle arrives in London to find that her godmother has already secured her a match, Captain Jimmy MacDonald.

Capt. MacDonald is horrid and the first time she meets him he is drunk but all the ladies just think he is great. Annabelle doesn't like him at all and really doesn't want to go through with the engagement, but her godmother won't giver her any money if she doesn't. Annabelle takes a liking to Lord Varleigh, but he is always seen with his mistress, Lady Jane.

While Annabelle tries to figure out what she is going to do, it seems someone is trying to kill Lady Emmaline. There are several attempts on her life before Annabelle puts two and two together.

Annabelle is a rector's daughter so she is really naive to the ways of the town and she is always surprised by how they act. She can't stand the oafish Capt. who is always doing stupid things in public and drunk but everyone else swoons over him. Although Annabelle is naive she has a lot of spirit and it helps her survive her time among the ton. Annabelle is a likable character.

Capt. MacDonald is a wretched characther and I am like Annabelle as I couldn't understand why anyone would like him. He had his moments but then he would do something stupid and remind you why you didn't like him.

Lord Varleigh, was to me jut a mediocre character. He was nice to Annabelle but they really never spent that much time together so I couldn't really understand how she comes to fall in love with him. He was always with his mistress, but was also nice to Annabelle.

Overall, it was an okay read and I am beginning to see that M. C. Beaton's books are not like those of today. Maybe because they were first written in the 80's they lack that bit of risque seen in romance books of today. If you prefer some steam in your romances it won't be found here but if you like them clean then from what I have read of this author so far you would like them.

Sweet Historical Romance

Another solid read in the series. They are great stories with feisty gals and a touch of adventure. The only down side is that there are times when they feel like they are dragging. The pace gets slow towards the middle, but things pick up in the end.

The romance is strictly clean, only some steamy kisses no bedroom action. It was nice because I was in the mood for romance, not smexy scenes. The feelings happen quickly, I find the connection more tentative than flat out love. I am willing to believe they are on their way to love at the end. Of course, the Epilogue shows that to be true!

I was so happy for Thomas to get his HEA, although I thought his downward spiral was a touch much. I don't think he ever really loved Bianca. He just needed someone to connect with and mistook his friendship with her. Now the connection with Amelia felt real. I loved their saucy banter!! I do love a couple that bickers at first!

The story is intriguing and entertaining. I generally liked the premise, it just dropped many plot points. This tends to be a theme in the series, but it isn't something that makes you stop reading. You feel the plot holes and wonder where characters got their info. There was at least one character that completely disappears with no explanation.

I loved the fact that past couples popped up again in this story. They are integral parts of this plot and keep things moving along. I also loved Amelia's sweet friend Meg, I hope she gets a HEA. I would love to see more books in this little series.

I listened to the audiobooks narrated by Stevie Zimmerman, who has been with the series from the beginning. I love her swift pace and soothing tone. She adds just the right amount of energy into the read. I love the British accent and it totally suits the setting. I will definitely be looking for more reads by her.

As with the rest of the series there is a weird pause between chapters. It is like listening to a cd and having a gap between songs. It was a touch annoying, I prefer a smooth read with no breaks.

Overall this was a really enjoyable read and gave me warm fuzzies. I like a Historical read and do not see many novellas in the genre. These are terrific quick listens for the commute or evil gym time.

Great read and nice listen..

MY FAVORITE MAJOR

A nice novella in this trilogy. Book One was about Philip and Amelia, who were a perfect couple. Philip was being a terrible grouch because the woman he loved fell in love with someone else and married him while Philip was fighting Napolean. Philip knew Olivia his whole life so it made sense that he thought he loved her. That is, until he met Amelia. And she did bring a lot of grief into his life.

It had just enough excitement to keep me interested, including our hero getting shot in the back by the bad guy.

I liked Cordelia (Cordie) and her brothers Russell and Tristan. I liked Kelly and Byrne, and what the author did to them was uncalled for, IMO. Also, Mason was simply a killer. He didnt care who he had to kill to get what he wanted.

There was explicit sex in this story but no swearing.

THE ENGLISH LIEUTENANTS LADY

I really liked Philip and Amelia from the first book and Tristan and Phoebe from this book BUT if the author wanted you to dislike Russell in both books she succeeded. Im not even sure I want to read the last book because of his attitude toward Tris and Phoebe.

Russell and Phoebe were betrothed but Russell didnt really love her and he was sleeping with anything that walked, eeww. Tristan DID love Phoebe and was willing to join the army in Canada in order to let Russell and Phoebe be together without his interference or longing for her. Then Phoebe realized she loved Tris and they eloped to Gretna Green. And when they got back thats when Russell made a jerk of himself. I just couldnt stand him and thats who the final book is about.

There was explicit sex in this book, too.
