  • Ep. 37: The Zanesville Massacre
    Content Warning: Animal abuse

This week on Get Out Alive, we cover a tragic day in October of 2011 that led to the death of over 40 exotic animals in Zanesville, Ohio, that had been kept in terrible conditions. This case led to Ohio changing its laws around exotic animal ownership, and sparked a countrywide debate about owning exotic animals, that was of course later blown up by Netflix's Tiger King in 2020.

If you'd like to know more about how USDA APHIS Animal Care inspects and regulates these facilities, you can check out their Inspection Guide or Animal Welfare Act and Animal Welfare Regulations. You can also file an animal welfare complaint here.

Stay tuned for when we do an extended series on exotic animal ownership and social media.

Jeremy was attacked not once, but three times that day. Tune in to hear how he got out alive.

This episode contains graphic imagery. Listener discretion is advised.

Jeremy's book Mauled: Lessons Learned From A Grizzly Bear Attack is out now wherever you buy books. As mentioned, we will be raffling off a copy of Jeremy's book to one of our Patrons a week after this episode airs.

  • Ep. 35: Steve Irwin
On September 4th, 2006, the world's most famous conservationist, Steve Irwin, went out on the ocean to shoot a documentary called Ocean's Deadliest. No one could've anticipated that he'd be killed by an animal that wasn't even on the Ocean's Deadliest list.

Steve was beloved by the world for his passion for wild animals of all kinds, especially crocodiles. So many of us grew up watching Crocodile Hunter and were inspired to work with animals (Ashley included). So what happened on that day in 2006 that led to his death? Should we be worried about stingrays? Tune in to hear how we can all recreate around stingrays safely.

November 15th is Steve Irwin Day. You can learn more about his zoo and Wildlife Warriors at australiazoo.com.au

  • Ep. 34: Night of the Grizzlies - Part 2
In Part 2 of our coverage of Night of the Grizzlies, we find out exactly who was screaming and why. Although most of our stories are graphic, this one is especially so. Listener discretion is advised.

Julie Helgeson and Michele Koons became the first recorded victims of a fatal grizzly bear attack in Glacier National Park, on the same night, by different bears. Their deaths changed the way that National Parks, especially Glacier, manage their grizzlies. Their deaths could have been avoided if park officials had responded to the reports of the increasing number of negative grizzly encounters, and the continued habituation of the bears. And for years to follow their deaths, the North American grizzly population suffered greatly. Now, in 2022, we know better and must do better.

If you'd like more details on this story, see Jack Olsen's  Night of the Grizzlies. You can also check out Montana PBS's coverage here. To learn more about how you can recreate safely in our National Parks around bears, please see the National Park Service's website.

  • Ep. 32: Beware The Rattle
    Our patrons voted: Rattlesnakes!

This week we're covering the tragic loss of 6-year old Simon Currat, who was bitten and died from a Rattlesnake bite in Colorado on July 5th. You can find the fundraiser for Simon's family here.

We also discuss the Jolo Serpent Handlers, an extreme fundamentalist group that follows the Bible extremely literally, specifically a passage in the Book of Mark that says true believers "shall take up serpents", among other things. You can find the documentary mentioned in episode here.

For more information on how to stay safe around Rattlesnakes and what to do if you're bitten, check out this PDF by the U.S. Forest Service.

  • Ep. 30: Ashley's Cautionary Tale
In this non-traditional episode of Get Out Alive, Ashley talks about the incident she recently had with two off-leash dogs while walking her smaller dog. We also talk about the dog attack experienced by dog trainer Laura Monaco Torelli three years ago in her Chicago neighborhood, and how it changed her and her dog forever. At the end, we briefly touch upon the feral dog problem in India, and the staggering amount of dog attacks that happen there each day.

You can listen to Laura tell the in-depth story and how she's overcome her experience on her episode of The Bitey End Of The Dog. You can follow her on Twitter @ABTConcepts.

This week we're talking about the very recent attack that occurred June 5th, 2022: Mukesh and Gudiya Rai were walking  through the Panna National Park Forest in New Delhi, India, when they were killed in what's been deemed a very rare attack by a Sloth Bear.

  • Ep. 28: When Swimming with Dolphins Doesn't Go Swimmingly
~Please excuse the poor audio quality, if this is your first experience with Get Out Alive, maybe don't make this your first episode?~

This week, three pals get together to talk about how dangerous it can be to swim with Bottlenose Dolphins and some people who were seriously injured when swimming with dolphins. And what is a dolphin, anyways? And should we be swimming with them?

If you are visiting the Gulf of California in Mexico, please keep an eye out for Vaquitas and people with Gillnets. If you see someone with a gillnet or a Vaquita entrapped, please call the NOAA Fisheries Enforcement Hotline at (800)-853-1964.

If you are visiting North Padre Island or the surrounding ocean in Texas, keep an eye out for the aggressive male dolphin and find more resources at fisheries.noaa,gov.  If you see someone trying to harass or feed the dolphin, please call 800-853-1964. You can also visit their website here to learn how to safely share the shore with Sea Turtles and other marine life.

If you see an injured or dead sea mammal, please call 877-WHALE-HELP

If you'd like to know more about the negative consequences of swimming with dolphins, please visit humanesociety.org.
