  • Ep. 19: Man's Best Friend - Part 1 (feat. Jim Crosby)
We had the pleasure of speaking with retired police officer and the world's leading fatal dog attack expert, Jim Crosby.  He has a Master's degree in Veterinary Forensics from the University of Florida, and is currently working on a PhD studying fatal dog attacks. He also wrote the newest U.S. Dept. of Justice curriculum on police-dog encounters so officers can respond to calls with aggressive dogs and not have to take physical action. How common are human deaths from dogs? What happens to a dog that's bitten or killed someone?  How can you spot signs of aggression in your dog or another dog? Find out the answers to those questions and more in Part 1 of our interview with Jim!

You can find Part 2 of our interview with Jim on our Patreon right now at the $5 or $15 level, otherwise you can find it on our regular feed next week! Next week we answer - are certain breeds more responsible for attacks?

We decided not to cover our own story at the beginning like we usually do because we felt that most people who own dogs or know people who own dogs have heard of dog attack stories or have unfortunately been a victim in a dog attack. If you or someone you know has been struggling after a dog attack, check out the American Psychological Association's website for tips on helping someone who's struggling, or you can find a licensed therapist through Psychology Today.

If you have an aggressive dog, you may want to seek help from a veterinary behaviorist. There is another podcast called The Bitey End of the Dog by Michael Shikashio (CDBC) that explores the topic of dog aggression further, and Michael's website AgressiveDog.com has great professional resources related to dog aggression and behavior.

  • Ep. 18: Otterly Vicious Attacks
In the later half of 2021, a series of attacks were reported in Anchorage, Alaska, carried out by river otters. Also in late 2021, a man in Singapore visiting the Botanic Gardens says he believes a group of smooth-coated otters would've killed him had his friend not intervened. Ashley and Nick break down the possible causes of these attacks, while making some (not so great in Nick's opinion) puns along the way. They also chat about some other totally tubular Mustelids, and the plot of the Zootopia movie. It's a wild start to 2022, folks.

To learn more about how to live safely alongside otters, you can read the article Please Don't Poke the Sea Otters by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

  • Ep. 16: Kangaroo Jack You Up
In this episode, Ashley and Nick discuss four different kangaroo attacks in Australia, all with different causes of attack. There are also many questions about kangaroos answered: How high can they jump? How many species are there? How much damage can they really do? How can you protect yourself? And what is a kangaroo cull anyways?

The Conservation is a great website with resources on how you can avoid collisions with wildlife in Australia. And if you live in or visit Australia, aami.com has a great table on what places experience more wildlife crashes at what times of the year.

You can find information on the 2021 Kangaroo Cull here.

Unfortunately the Roadkill TAS app has closed, but you can still report roadkill on this website.

You can learn more about how to help Australia's wildlife at AustraliaZoo.com.au and if you see injured Australian wildlife, call 1300 369 652 between 8am and 5pm.

  • Ep. 15: The Tsavo Man-Eaters
In the late 1890s, an area of Kenya called Tsavo was terrorized by two mane-less male lions. Depending on who you ask, they killed between 35-300 people. Join Nick and Ashley for this long tale of two cats, and how for many months they evaded over 8,000 men, one of which was John Henry Patterson (who wrote a book about his journey in The Man Eaters of Tsavo and Other East African Adventures), despite him staying up every night to try to stop their killing spree.

The taxidermized specimens of these lions can be found at the Field Museum in Chicago.

  • Ep. 14: Travis the pet Chimpanzee
On February 16th, 2009, an entirely avoidable event occurred: Charla Nash had her face ripped off by her friend Sandra Herold's pet chimp, Travis.Travis was a 200 pound, 14 year-old Chimpanzee. His owners "adopted" him for $50,000 from a place called the Missouri Chimpanzee Sanctuary, and raised him as a mix between a pet and a child. He ate at the dinner table with them, drank wine, slept in their beds, and DROVE. CARS. You can imagine Ashley and Nick have some strong opinions in this one.And yes, we also touch on Harambe. This is our most graphic episode yet - if you are of the faint of heart, this may not be the episode for you.Somehow we didn't mention Jane Goodall (despite her being Ashley's idol), but you can learn more about her amazing chimpanzee work at JaneGoodall.org

  • Ep. 13: Mauled to death by a Polar Bear
In August of 2011 in Svalbard, Norway, 17 year-old Horatio Chapple was fatally mauled by a polar bear while on an expedition with the British Schools Exploring Society, and many of his companions were also brutally attacked. We then travel over to northern Canada and hear of two attacks in 2018, one of which killed Aaron Gibbons who was defending his children, and the other attack killed Darryl Kaunak and left his two friends to protect his body from other polar bears as they waited to be rescued. And we round out talking about the most recent polar bear attack in August of 2021, which fortunately had no casualties (besides the bear).

  • Ep. 12: Feral Swine Mess With Texas
In November of 2019, Christine Rollins was on her way to her job at an elderly couple's house when she was mauled to death by feral swine.

Although this attack was short, we take a deep dive into the issue of feral swine in North America. You can get more information about feral swine on the USDA APHIS website. If you'd like to check out regulations for hunting them in your state, you can check out HogMan Outdoors.

At the end of the episode, we reference the 2013 study Wild Pig Attacks on Humans by John Mayer (no, not the pop star...or John Muir.)
