    THE Worst Performance. EVER!
I cannot believe I just wasted 3 hours of my life listening to this. The reader is absolutely horrible, so much so that I felt the need to submit this review when I usually just move on to the next book. Had I not been in a hurry yo grt to my destination (I was driving while listening) I would have pulled over and put on a new book. The storyline seems interesting and it might be a better read than audiobook, but I don't know or care at this point.

The untimely death of St. Louis kingpin King David has left a vacuum in the underworld. He leaves behind his vast empire to his surviving heirs, David Jr. and Davita. Born barely one year apart, they were raised in very different worlds.
David Jr. is college educated. His mother always pushed him to do the best he could, so he could one day legitimize and run the East St. Louis crime family. She thinks she's above and beyond the game. All she wants is the money that she believes she and her son are due.
Davita, born to and of the streets, was also raised by a money-loving momma, but her mother taught her a different set of rules. Davita has been raised to use anybody and everything to get that money by any means necessary. She has embraced the business of the streets, and she is ready to ascend to the throne that her father has unexpectedly left behind.
The question remains: Will the family ties that bind keep the families together, or will sex, greed, drugs, and their mothers' divisive ways tear it all to hell, bringing St. Louis down with them? David Jr. and Davita have decisions to make!

The singles ministry at New Day Temple of Faith is beginning to unravel, and the pastor is considering dissolving it. Some members believe the only way to hold it together is by getting their pastor to join. And why shouldn't their leader show support by joining, considering the pastor's own single status? Some church members support the idea, while others frown upon the fact that they are being led by a shepherd who is single in the first place. It becomes an all-out war, with one side wanting the pastor to embrace singlehood, while others secretly play matchmaker.
Marriage has been the furthest thing from the pastor's mind, not because there hasn't been an opportunity, but because there really hasn't been time. With a needy congregation facing trials and tribulations, the pastor has no time to play the dating game. Being a pastor on call 24/7, who has time for a serious relationship, other than the one with God?
Eventually, decisions have to made around New Day. Will these decisions mend the ministry or destroy the church?

    great book
    narrator was awful!!!
story was good as always. on to the next book. thanks so much!
    Relateable
The storyline of the different characters in the church were very believable and dead on in terms of issues that go on in church and the behavior of "saints"
    Great story...awful narrator
The narrator was sooo bad I could barely get thru the story. I never rate narrators as I never understood how important they were to the story til now. Her voice was like a librarian reading a book to you, no theater & no life breathed into the characters. Luckily the story line was good enough to push me to the end (although admittedly I did some skipping as I couldn't stand her voice at times).

    Interesting ...... can't wait for part 2
This is first time I ever read a book from this author. Pretty good I might say. This book had plenty of up and downs. I can't wait to see what revenge is going to happen next. Narrator was nice too. It's really important when your are listening to books. You have to stay entertained. And she did a great job too
    Not bad
This was really good can't eait for 2 to come out cause i will be reading that one too.
    Smh don't waste your time
This book is absolutely HORRIBLE, and more than anything the reader sounds like something's stuffed up her nose, she's one of the worst readers I've heard and I'm an advocate audible listener, just to keep it all the way 100, the book might not be so bad but due to her HORRIBLE voice I can't stand to listen to another word. Truth be told, the story line pretty much sucks as well. Save your $ and your credit and find another book

    Must listen!!!
This book was so good! I haven't read any books previously by this author but I will definitely be seeking more out. The plot has so many twists and turns I just could not stop listening. The narrator Nicole small is by far one of my favorite narrators. You will not be disappointed.
    starts off slow...
this one started out a bit slow for my taste, however it did eventually pick up. very eventful. in the beginning, you may have 2 jot down the characters names and their relations 2 stay up on whats happening
    Great read!!!
I like it. I like Nicole Small. She was great. She brought the story to life. I got a clear picture. What can I say about this book. It was twisted from beginning to end. I liked how Trent and Shia love was able to survive despite the craziness. True love never dies no matter what.
    I Loved It....
I Especially Love Nicole Small.. This Was A Really Good Book.. Would Love To Hear More From Mychea..
    Great story!
This was a great story. It kept me interested from the time I started listening until the end. A lot of twists and turns and a lot of interesting moments. I love the narrator. I often listen to books that she narrates. She has a great voice and she brings the characters to life.

WOW! what the freak just happened?
That ending had me like "WOW, what the freak just happened? Hold up are you serious that just happened YO?" In my exact words and voice. First thing I need to get out of the way is that Nicole Small has an awesome voice. Her performances are always so superb and sometimes the reason why I pick the books that I do. You did a great job narrating and adding life to this book. Secondly, this book started off all over place. it takes a minute to connect the characters to one another. that is the reason why I rated the overall so low. I had to go back and re read the story to fill in the pieces of my puzzled mind. There are also pieces that you have to put together that seem out of place in this book kind of like a story being told without identifying characteristics. This is definately a series I will keep up with. Can't wait for the next part. Bravo Mychea.

    Good book.
Wow, Cameron, he treated Yolanda like crap with all his cheating. I hope he realize what he had because she was a good woman. But stupid to put up with his crap. And to be honest the Honey girl is ghetto in my opinion. Cameron was something else, like he didn't care about Yolanda feeling at all. And the ending had me like REALLY? that's it you gotta be kidding me. I was offended by that because I felt like it could've been longer you know.

    Release date: 09-13-16
    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 33 votes
    Genres: Fiction, African-American
    Publisher's Summary:
An epic account of one remarkable woman's quest for justice from the New York Times best-selling author of The Widow of the South and A Separate Country.
In the years following the Civil War, Mariah Reddick, former slave to Carrie McGavock - the "Widow of the South" - has quietly built a new life for herself as a midwife to the women of Franklin, Tennessee. But when her ambitious, politically minded grown son, Theopolis, is murdered, Mariah - no stranger to loss - finds her world once more breaking apart. How could this happen? Who wanted him dead?
Mariah's journey to uncover the truth leads her to unexpected people - including George Tole, a recent arrival to town, fleeing a difficult past of his own - and forces her to confront the truths of her own past. Brimming with the vivid prose and historical research that has won Robert Hicks recognition as a "master storyteller" (San Francisco Chronicle).
    Critic Reviews:
"The heartbreaking story of former slave and midwife Mariah Reddick is intelligently presented by narrator Adenrele Ojo.... Ojo reflects Mariah's joy at her newly won freedom and the fear and horror she suffers as her only son exercises those new rights. A tone of regret and anger creep into Ojo's voice as Mariah seeks justice. Tenderly portrayed by Ojo, a chaste romance between Mariah and a sniper seeking redemption elevates this potential potboiler into an effective historical novel." (AudioFile)

    Beautiful Narrative
But the story did not capture me as I'd hoped. overall it was a good read.
    Great Story
I listened to this book to and from work. It's a great story and it was almost sad to see it end. Great character development and story
    Pretty Good
At times, a bit drawn out, but overall, decent historical fiction, with interesting storyline and fair narration. However, some of the characters' voices sounded really strange, almost cartoon-like, which in turn, did detract from listening. Still not sure if I wil keep this audiobook, since not real likely to listen again.

    I love this book.
    Any additional comments?
My only issues with this book is the narrator and the cover photo. The narrator herself was great but her voice I don't think was the best. I had a hard time not picturing the children as little caucasian children. That voice with the cover photo I wanted to make the main character bi-racial. Inside it clearing states over and over that the main character is dark skinned. Its a part of the story. Strange choice in narrator. Still the story was so great I couldn't stop listening and came to the end to quickly!
    Well done!
I truly enjoyed the story and it's narration! I would love for there to be a sequel!
    Not your typical pioneer book
This was a good story with a different perspective. My only complaint (if you can call it that) is the narrator's voice did not match the main character. She did a good job but it was like mixing oil and water.
1800s homesteading in all its pain & minutiae
It's hard to come upon books that deal with the day to day women's work of the past. I wonder if she called this a personal history because as opposed to men's histories, it isn't about conquering or achieving something great in the world's eyes so much as the work women did privately and the Incredible strength that they had. what they cooked, the furnishings of her home, her Chicago childhood as a black girl in the early 20th century, what they wore, how they secured water, the little things she was able to give her children such as rag dolls and fairy tales. Some parts of this book were difficult to listen to. It just goes on and on. Hungry children gathering cow chips for the stove in the miserable biting cold of South Dakota. Their thirst through the drought is palpable; the dust in their throats in mouths and how she dreams of washing everything when the rains come, as her husband promises they will. What I really loved about this book, aside from satisfying my curiosity about what it would have been like on a daily basis to live as a woman in that time, is the pure, selfless heart of Rachel Dupree as she works to maintain her love for her husband and her children's innocence, wanting to give what she calls a dab of sweetness to their lives, which she admits will probably mostly be hard work.
    Loved this book!
Great story! Emotional and thought-provoking. The reader did a wonderful job of bringing the story to life. Loved it!
