Three best-selling authors join talents in a multidimensional novel that illustrates the importance of love, family, and forgiveness.
Three daughters, connected only through their relationship to Amos, a now elderly ex-musician struggling with Alzheimer's disease, find their lives intertwining as a car accident reunites them at Amos' bedside - bringing some long-buried issues to light.
Cass has little self-worth after Amos left her as a child. It is only through her cake-decorating business and encouragement from her best friend that she begins to reconstruct her life, eventually realizing she has enough room in her heart to forgive him.
Love-starved Toya doesn't want to emulate others' failed relationships. As she begins to strengthen her morals and stops seducing married men - she is surprised to discover that she shares some similarities with Amos.
Tomiko is a beautiful but lonely woman. Despite having a successful career in writing, she attempts to keep aspects of herself and her past buried as a coping mechanism. However, new love reawakens her faith in both herself and men.
As Cass, Toya, and Tomiko reconcile their feelings of abandonment, Amos reflects on his life and the decisions he made. And by revisiting their painful pasts, they all find ways to reconnect with each other and live with compassion.

    Soulful
Finding Amos was a delightful tale of the cost of pursuing ones passions. It made me laugh and cry, while feeling all its soulful content.
    Love these Authors
Finding Amos has a very honest view of the main character. Even though he's selfish, these authors make u love him the way everyone else does(even when they don't want to).
    What happened????
These are some of my favorite authors individually.....but as a trio they failed miserably! I trudged through this book hoping it would get better but it was bad. None of the characters were likeable....(Cass was okay) and the book was was somewhat a negative portrayal of many of the stereotypes in the African American community/family life.
Finally, the narrator....OMG! I'm sorry...he was bad as a female characters and even worse as a singer!
    A wasted credit.
    Relationships !
This Trio should do another book together. They did a wonderful job of shedding light on the importance of the father daughter relationship. And, what happens if there is no investment in this relationship.
    good listen
the story was a good one and rings similar to many women. I enjoyed listening.

Great book, lot of twist and turns!
Great book, unsuspecting twist and turns, the end was unbelievable. Great listening pleasure. Don't sleep on this book
    Hypnotic!!!
I loved the story. I wanted the story to keep going. It was full of suspense up to the last word!! Taylor's narration was definitely on point.
    A LITTLE MORE
a good listen but would have liked to havr a little more conversation between father and son.
Go on ReShonda, this was one of your best!
If you could sum up Mama's Boy in three words, what would they be?
    Held My Attention
What was one of the most memorable moments of Mama's Boy?
SPOILER: When the prosecuting attorney received her own personal wake up call and had to face her own demons with her son that she thought was one of the best and brightest kids because he was raised in a "good home". Don't get me wrong, he was a good kid, but he was not perfect and just like any other, he had his own issues and was crying out for help. In fact, this was one of the predictable story lines in the book. I KNEW she was going to get hers in the end.
Which character as performed by Myra Lucretia Taylor was your favorite?
It's been a while that I've listened to a book narrated by Myra Lucretia Taylor and I must say that she did an excellent job. However, I cannot say that any of the characters really stood out that much in the book. It would have been nice to have multiple narrators because it always helps the flow of the story.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
SOMEWHAT OF A SPOILER: Yes, the ending. I was not expecting that outcome at all especially in the society that we live in. The way the judge handled the case showed her concern for ALL parties involved to the point where she was not being one-sided as with all other cases I've seen.
    Any additional comments?
This book really held my attention and there are many lessons that can be learned throughout. In fact, it was such a good read, that I'm considering it for my next book club reading.

    Publisher's Summary:
From the multimillion-copy master of vernacular black literature and pioneer of hip-hop culture, a masterpiece of crime fiction set in Los Angeles' meanest, toughest streets. Here is the newly discovered novel by Iceberg Slim, the creator and undisputed master of African-American "street literature", a man who profoundly influenced hip-hop and rap culture and probably has sold more books than any other black American author of the 20th century (not that he saw the royalties from those sales). In many ways Iceberg Slim's most mature fictional work, Shetani's Sister relates, in taut, evocative vernacular torn straight from the street corner, the deadly duel between two complex antiheroes: Sergeant Russell Rucker, an LAPD vice detective attempting to clean up street prostitution and police corruption, and Shetani (Swahili for Satan), a veteran master pimp who controls his stable of whores with violence and daily doses of heroin.

    Language: English
    Release date: 06-30-15

    Genres: Fiction, African-American
    Publisher's Summary:
Two sisters are suddenly sent from their home in Brooklyn to Barbados to live with their grandmother, in this stunning debut novel. This lyrical novel of community, betrayal, and love centers on an unforgettable matriarchal family in Barbados. Two sisters, ages 10 and 16, are exiled from Brooklyn to Bird Hill in Barbados, after their mother can no longer care for them. The young Phaedra and her older sister, Dionne, live, for the summer of 1989, with their grandmother, Hyacinth, a midwife and practitioner of the local spiritual practice of obeah. Dionne spends the summer in search of love, testing her grandmother's limits, and wanting to go home. Phaedra explores Bird Hill, where her family has lived for generations, accompanies her grandmother in her role as a midwife, and investigates their mother's mysterious life.
This tautly paced coming-of-age story builds to a crisis when the father they barely know comes to Bird Hill to reclaim his daughters, and both Phaedra and Dionne must choose between the Brooklyn they once knew and loved or the Barbados of their family. Jackson's Barbados and her characters are singular, especially the wise Hyacinth and the heartbreaking young Phaedra, who is coming into her own as a young woman amid the tumult of her family.
    Critic Reviews:
"With a voice that can shift from the liquid brown sugar of Barbados to Brooklyn's assertive nasal tones, Robin Miles offers a pitch-perfect reading of Naomi Jackson's remarkable first novel.... What a pleasure." (AudioFile)

My absolute favorite book of all time
Where does The Star Side of Bird Hill rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Number 1. I will be hard pressed to find a book that will knock this one out of top spot anytime soon.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Phaedra because she was so sure of herself. She was an American growing up in Barbados and was treated as such and it just made her stronger. She was alert to her surroundings and new who was genuine and who wasn't and she didn't follow her sister blindly just because she was older. She asked questions. Hyacinth was the sweetest Caribbean Granny you would want to meet. She could have been my granny, firm but loving. She loved those girls and her own daughter fiercely and always acting in their best interest. She listened, observed and only intervened when necessary.
What about Robin Miless performance did you like?
Robin Miles is a tour-de-force to be reckoned with. She captured the feel of the islands exactly. The accents rolled of her tongue like water and she could switch seamlessly between American and Bajan. Even the America/Bajan hybrid of some parts of the story came alive. She was simply wonderful. I could listen to her forever.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Of course I had an extreme reaction to this book. I cried, I cried many times. I'm hoping that is was it struck some deep chord within and that i'm not going crazy for crying over a book. I too and Caribbean American and it took me home again. I loved this book so very much, the writing was beautiful, the love between characters was even more arresting. It was a sweet Caribbean tale of love and loss and it touched me deeply
    Enjoyable story
Sometimes you need to leave life behind and go to another place.

Great flow and keeps your interest - I recommend!
I chose this book because it was 18 hours and the narrator is one I have come to enjoy (great buy). This is a new author for me, but I will say she did the dang thang. Although, I was looking to get away from the urban urban urban fiction (money, sex and drugs), the way this book flowed was a lighter version.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It kept me wanted to know more. The one enormous twist was waaAy far fetched but a great way to tie the book together. The story made me wonder if some of the issues were true, like the exclusive clubs and how they incorporate others. It was chock full of juice.
The villain was a true villain (nasty expletive, lol), I wanted that character to get it so0 incredibly bad. So the outcomes didnt happen as expected, but that is real life, as well.
I recommend, it was a really good read looking for my next adventure.
    awesome
this is my first book from this author but I was very pleased I laughed I cried and I was even angry at times this was a great listen and the narration was awesome

    Publisher's Summary:
Fans of The Help and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil will delight in this comic novel of family secrets by acclaimed author Susan Gabriel (The Secret Sense of Wildflower, a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2012 and an Amazon number one best seller).
In Savannah, Georgia, one woman holds all the secrets. When she dies of a possible voodoo curse, the secrets start coming out. The ghosts are upset. And for the Temple family women, everything is about to change forever.
Aristocratic 80-year-old Iris Temple has a fondness for exotic meats, and her poison-pen Book of Secrets keeps her family and all of Savannah's elites in line. Shortly after Iris dies, compromising tidbits from the Book of Secrets are mysteriously published in the newspaper, and the quiet lives of the Temple family women explode.
Iris' estranged daughter, Rose, escaped to Wyoming 20 years ago and married a cowboy. Will she accept the outrageous terms of the will?
Queenie, Iris' black half sister, lives in the historic family mansion, suffering Iris' arrogant ways as her personal assistant. After all she's tolerated with Iris, will she inherit the mansion, as promised?
One hundred-year-old Old Sally, who keeps the old Gullah traditions alive, is Queenie's mother by her white employer, Iris' father. For Rose, she is the mother Iris could never be. Did Old Sally put a voodoo curse on Iris?
When they discover who will inherit the historic family mansion and Iris' multimillion- dollar estate, the whole boisterous business of secrets forces the women into challenging - and sometimes hilarious - situations as they put the past to rest and forge a brighter future.
Temple Secrets is Southern Gothic fiction at its best. If you like strong women, plots full of twists and turns, characters who are funny and unpredictable, and sibling rivalry of biblical proportions, you'll love Susan Gabriel's rollicking tale of the cost of keeping secrets, the healing that comes with their exposure, and the bliss of coming home again.

    Southern Fiction at its Finest
This novel had me in its grasp from the very beginning to the very end. The characters came alive and almost felt like my own family. I was not always sure where the story was heading, and that made for an exciting read - never a dull moment. Anyone who likes Southern charm, quirky relatives, and a bit of the supernatural will love this book.
    Outstanding!
This audiobook was wonderful. Each of the characters had strong personalities thanks to the writer, and the narrator brilliantly became each character. Not a small feat with the diversity of the individual personalities. I really enjoyed the story and look forward to the sequel.
    stick with it
it started a little slow but got much better as it went along. wish it had more details on the past
The story is good, although told a bit melodramatic...
I wish I read it instead of listened to it. The reader was too melodramatic at times...
    Historical fiction at its best
I love Georgia history, Savannah and its stories. Beautiful characters and surroundings. You can almost see what the reader is reading.
