What made the experience of listening to We Danced the most enjoyable?

Sterling's recreation of the characters Erno initially created with words on a page, truly bringing them to life.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Rex. Good lord, yum, wow, I want one, hot! But so tender and caring as well. Really the total package.

What does Finn Sterling bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

He brings the characters to life.

It started with a dance -

From the moment Rex Payton and Josh Billings meet, the attraction is mutual and the energy is combustible. Neither of them really knows what hit them, and they both go from trying to convince themselves they don't want to other to finally accepting they can't stay away from each other... they can't keep their hands off each other. Both men have their own reasons for not wanting to pursue anything further than some pretty goddamn amazing sex. Rex is basically the father figure to his young nephew, has been the only father the young boy has ever known. He has to concentrate on keeping Tyler safe and happy. Josh is in town for only a year while he does his residency at the local Veterinarian office, something required while he is finishing his degree to become a Vet.

Small town Kentucky is far from accepting, and when a local "Christian Woman" gets it in her head that simply because Rex and Josh are gay they "must" be doing something to Tyler, the shit really hits the fan. Josh is the man Rex has been waiting for these past six years. The man that can see past the pain Rex holds so dear over the loss of his mother, sister and father. The man that will love him and Tyler unconditionally. The same goes for Josh. The furthest thing from his mind when coming to Kentucky was finding love. But he found it, none the less, and now that they've found each other they are determined to hold on tight. But at what cost?

Let me tell you just how much I loved this book. Not five minutes into the book I could feel the electricity converging between these two. And it was a steady flow from there.

Excellent narrator, incomplete story.

I love the narrator. Jason Frazier can narrate a phone book and I'd listen to it. He reads with such passion, and gives each character a unique voice when there are multiple characters in a scene so you always know who's speaking. He honestly made this story far more engaging than it otherwise would have been. This is not the kind of book I would probably finish if I'd bought the ebook or paperback edition. It's just unrelenting angst and so much suffering. The 'villains' in this story are almost caricatures. But then, watch or read the news, and people like them actually exist in real life. I think that's part of the reason this story is hard for me. I find real life terrible enough as it is, which is why I prefer stories that offer an escape from the horribleness of reality. You won't get that here.

If you're also the type who needs closure, at the end of this audiobook, there is definitely a big, honking TO BE CONTINUED that goes unspoken so be prepared in case you think Jack and Andrew finally get their happily ever after.

I hope Jason Frazier narrates the next one if there is another one (which will hopefully be the last). I also hope Jason narrates more audiobooks because he's in my auto-buy list at this point. One of the best narrators I've ever listened to since joining Audible.

Better than the first, Darker as well.

Oddly, this is my favorite book of the 3 thus far. It's disturbing and dark in some places but the strength of character that both Jack and Andrew possess while separated was astonishing considering their age and the dark place they are both in emotionally. While Andrew thinks he finally found some peace with his foster parents, his birth parents manage to convince the judge they've changed, and Andrew pays dearly for the justice systems stupidity.

Surely this book is meant to be more than it seems

What made the experience of listening to Don't Judge a Book by Its Cover the most enjoyable?

This theme is very common among gay romance novels. The nerd who is attracted to the absolute good looking jock, with no hope of anything ever happening. Most of the time this theme takes the road of the jock failing a class and needing tutoring by the nerd. It is surely one of my all time favorite themes. This actually took a side road to that basic theme. They ended up getting together from a snow storm, this is also a known ploy to get these two together. But this story went into family abuse and alcohol and gambling addictions and then into intervention of said family. Then even more, some of it was a little creative beyond anything I have read before.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked both characters, but there was just something missing with them that I still can't put my finger on. It was almost like this book, which is I believe aimed at young adults, was a text book to explore and bring about a very positive attitude towards gay youth and the issues they face. Now, don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, but maybe it was written by a committee. I mean both guys are basically too good and don't go through more acting out than I would expected if all the things that happened to them really did. It is a very positive story...and I guess I expected a little more acting out etc. Surely I believe it could be read by a straight youth and they would learn acceptance, tolerance for people who are different, family dynamic with addictions like alcohol and gambling. Adults getting together and having an intervention to stop the abuse associated with these types of addictions. And of course the importance of an education, especially reading and going to college.

What about Michael Stellmans performance did you like?

Great read. Never a problem with him and of course like any good narrator he brought a great deal of my enjoyment of the book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Well at first yes. Like I said I just love this type of theme. As I sit here and think about it surely it represents some of my own issues when I was going to high school.

broken book

this is the third book is the Fire series and to me it seems to be just one book that was chopped into three short stories. I can only guess that it is because of money. you have to buy three books to get the full story. as for the story, it is just OK. there is not much going on in it. it reads like a TV melodrama. it was not bad but aside from sex every chapter there really is not much else. I would prefer a good book that has a beginning, a conflict and a final or solution to that conflict. this had some conflict but aside from getting a charity event going it was not much of a conflict. read it for fun, it's a fast read.

Great ending to a great series

In this, book 3 of the fire series (and the end of Dirk and Lees portion), Lee and Dirk are quite happily together. They leave a rough fire scene, where not everyone makes it, and go on their regularly scheduled vacation, a Caribbean Cruise. Who should end up on the cruise but Daddy Dearest, Dirks father.

Most of the book is fun vacation activities and state-room fun, but there are some important father/son scenes and some personal growth on the part of Dirks father.

I liked how Dirks comfort with being gay and out grew steadily over the series and how Lee doesnt let Dirk get away with anything. Lee tells it like it is and that is really refreshing.

This was a sweet ending, kind of an epilogue to the epilogue, if you will. But a nice touch, having us see Dirk and his father reconcile.

I liked this series a lot. It was fun, light, engaging. We learned a bit about fires, firehouses, and cruise ships. All in all I recommend the book and the series.

Audio book:

Peter B. Brooke does another really solid job. His Dirk voice is great and I really appreciated the sultry lilt he gives Lee when the bedroom scenes are narrated.

I enjoyed this series with Peter as narrator and would look for his work in the future.

Loved the story, but not the narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I actually know a few people who might actually be able to relate to the story, from both the perspectives of Bart and Tyrone.

What didnt you like about Andrew McFerrins performance?

He made Bart sound whiny and like a spoiled brat, rather than someone trying to overcome an addiction and neglectful family. It was like listening to Keanu Reeves, but specifically in Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure, which kept breaking the otherwise great story.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Originally, no, but once I was able to get past the annoying way the narrator performed certain characters I was able to get more into the actual story.

Drug Rehab thru Idyllic Rural Michigan Farm life

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

This is the sixth volume in a series. I'd suggest that folks check out volume 1 and if they like that proceed through the books in order. Some will enjoy spending time with characters that soon become like old friends. Others will not care for these books. Individual mileage may vary.

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The audio-book is narrated by Andrew McFerrin who does a credible job with the narration and with keeping the many character voices distinct although his "child being adorable" and "urban black delinquent" voices may rub some the wrong way.

Bartholomew van Andren is the son of wealthy Grand Rapids socialites. But Spider is the unhappy, drug addicted kid that is running from that all wealth and parents that seem too busy to care about their ne'er do well son. That is until Spider takes too many of the wrong pills and ends up in the community hospital. When he wakes up he discovers that he's been taken under the protection of Duane, a sheriff's deputy that thinks he may have just the way to turn the kid around. Spider, or Bart as they now insist on calling him soon finds himself mucking out stalls at Laughton Farms as the least senior hired hand on a horse farm run by Geoff Laughton and Eli Henninger two gay men that have a habit of adopting and rehabilitating stray gay youth.

One of the best Gay Romances.

I have read this book so many times on my Kind!e and so I thought I'd buy it on audio too. It is just as wonderful. What I love about this book is its an established couple who really live each other but they've never dealt with or even talked about any problems other than superficial ones. When serious issues from the past come into their relationship, they need to have some heavy conversations but they just don't know how. The problems continue to multiply faster than they can discuss them or even wrap their heads around the massive changes in their lives. I love how well written these characters are and their reactions. A couple of the side characters, who have their own story in another book, aren't quite the voices I'd imagined & one scene gets a bit muddled making it hard to tell who is speaking but overall the reader is very good.

Great story but not loving the audio, sadly.

If you could sum up Not Knowing Jack in three words, what would they be?

Tony and Jack are introduced in Regularly Scheduled Life, book one of the Ohio series, and I fell in love the with the flirtatious bartender, Tony, then and there. Tony has got to be one of the best characters ever developed in a gay romance novel, and I still say everyone needs a Tony in their lives. He is a big kid at heart, but is loyal to a fault. There is no one you can trust to have your back more than Tony. Jack learns this the hard way, after he treats Tony like crap and kicks him to the curb, twice, on the same day.

The series continues - great narration

Dirk and Lee are now an out couple at work and though awkward, they are definitely getting more comfortable in that area. This book is more about saving the firehouse than anything else. The biggest personal issue is handling their first major disagreement.

Dirk is against Lees idea and the two sort-of have a face-off about it.

They still have lots of lovely physical enjoyment and it is interesting to see them work through their first couples fight. It was also really nice to see the boys in the firehouse rally together and show support for both Lee and the team. When Dirk does finally see the light, he ends up helping Lee and being super sweet about it.

Dirk is still battling with his father but we can start to see there might be light at the end of the tunnel for the their relationship.

I really liked this book (and the series) and I give it 4 stars.

Nothing more to say here Peter did another great job, I even liked his female characters.

Great follow up

I absolutely loved this addition to the story. We got to see more growth from Dirk as he learns to support and be there for Lee. Lee shows that he's strong willed and not willing to let Dirk steam roll him.

The way all the men pull together to try to save their station was awesome. It was really special to watch it all come together while seeing out men grow stronger and learn more about each other as they did so.

The narrator did a fabulous job with the story and made it entertaining to listen to.

I can't wait for the next part of the story!

All is not well

This book is told mostly through Lee's point of view, unlike the first book which was told through Dirk's. Dirk and Lee are growing together and apart, as they figure out how to work around their differences. By far the best book in the series when it comes to character development. Side note: I love their firehouse family they are hilarious, and encouraging.

Saved by the narrator

Despite what it says in the product page about who narrated this story, as soon as I listened to the sample, I knew that was Tristan James. And since he's on auto-buy for me, I got this despite never having heard of the author before.

The narration was perfect as usual. I wasn't expecting anything less from one of my favorite narrators. But the story was sort of a mixed bag.

Zack and Van spend a huge chunk of this story apart. Interacting with a multitude of side characters instead of each other. As a result, I wasn't as invested in their relationship as I might have been otherwise. There's also the element of insta-love, and I found the sexual tension between the characters prior to them

consummating their relationship via a sexathon to be somewhat lukewarm.

There was some humorous dialogue which I found amusing, but then again, there was also purple prose which threw me off.

This was a decent story with an excellent narrator. I'm hoping the rest of the series will be better.

This book didn't work for me but it might for you.

Okay, I'm just going to come out and say it: I hated this book. In fact, the more I listened, the more infuriated I become.

Zach was a weird character. He oscillated between this clueless, dorky, clumsy (BTW, I'm so sick of "clumsy characters" that trip like, once, and then are labeled as "the clumsy one" to be cute) character and this user, judgmental man-whore. Now, I'm all for sexual freedom and, well, man-whoring, but Zach was this strange mix of liberated and self-loathing. He would be like, "yeah, I can have sex right on the dance floor!" and then would whine, "oh, that's really not me! I'm not like that." He was supposed to be shy but then was sometimes this exhibitionist... it went back and forth and didn't mesh well. Zach was annoying and made no sense to me as a character.

Also, like I said, he was sooooo judgmental! GAH, I wanted to nads punch him sometimes. When Zach hooked up with a guy with a third nipple, he went on and on about how gross the guy was and how much he repulsed him, and then banged him anyway. He was a user and not very nice, in my opinion.

I also hated the whole "She's All That" makeover scene.

An amazing story - TERRIBLE narration

This is a unique shifter book in that Cole is no typical alpha. He stutters, hes awkward, hes shy, and hes mated to a panther! Paris, his mate, is extremely cat like, shifty, sinuous, slinky and solitary. This makes his being mated to Cole very hard, and forms the crux of their dilemma.

Tara Lain likes to give us quirky, sometimes odd MCs and then show us why we should love them. It takes some doing Cole is really stiff and sometimes hard to read. Paris is very cocky and stand-offish, hard to wrap your mental cuddle around. In the end, however, we see their soft-underbellies and they manage to worm their way into our hearts.

I had to combine the audio and book review together because the unique nature of the book influences the audio versions palatability. When I read this book earlier in the year, I loved it straight away. Gave it 5 of 5 stars. Then I read the second in the series, and loved it even more! I was therefore excited to listen to the audio very much.

Ugh!

At first I had to stop listening and go back to the book. Was it the narrator or the story that was bothering me so much? So, I went back to read the book again.

Ahhh I get it! The rhythm of the book, the writing style, mimics animal thought and impressions. Something that translates really well on paper, but would take a discerning eye/ear for to read aloud. Tara does a funny play on words, uses sounds and pauses that work to put you in the mind of a wolf running through the woods. Maybe no one could do it well, hard to say, but the unique wording and timing just didnt translate well when read aloud by Max Lehnen.

Maxs voice is sort of garbled, like he has a mouth full of marbles, and the lack of clarity bugged me. Then there was his inflection. I tried to tell myself that not everyone needs to act a story out. A good narration can be one where the narrator disappears leaving us only the words, not his interpretation of the words. But Max didnt do that either, at least not real well.
