Dirk Krause is an asshole of the first degree. His life is a hell of his own making, and he makes everyone around him just as miserable. When he's injured on the job while fighting a fire, he's nearly unbearable to the hospital staff, and of course no one from his unit cares enough to visit.

To Dirk's surprise, Lee sees through him like a pane of glass and doesn't take any of his crap. Lee's determined to get Dirk to stop being a dick just to push everyone away. When their fighting turns to f--king, will the fireworks shine brightly on a possible relationship or leave them with nothing but ashes?

    Awesome Narrator!!!
The story was to short, it need a little more substance. The narrator was awesome! I love his voice changes. you definitely new when a new character was talking.
Great start to a fun series
Dirk is a big ole jerk. Nobody likes him at the firehouse and his dad thinks hes stupid for throwing away a career in finance to be a fireman. He doesnt really have any friends, and has never had any sort of romantic relationship. It turns out he has to sneak away to back alleys and bar bathrooms to get some lovin, because hes gay, and in addition to hating his career, dear old dad is a big homophobe.
Lee is the new guy who saves Dirk in a fire when Dirk rescues a baby at his own risk. Lee gives Dirk the benefit of the doubt, and when Dirk shows signs of batting for the same team as Lee, he pushes Dirk to admit his attraction.
Dirk isnt going to change his spots so easy and is pretty much a jerk to Lee for weeks and weeks until finally Lee gives up and leaves Dirk to his own devices.
Life is lonely for Dirk and he does some soul searching and groveling and he and Lee begin a relationship. Its not all candy and roses from there. Dirk still has quite a lot of growing to do, but the two work through their problems and when another disaster puts Lee in the line of danger, Dirk finally figures out exactly how much Lee means to him.
This first book in the By Fire series sets the ground-work for the relationship between the two lovers. Lee shows infinite patience and helps Dirk to become more worthy of his love. I really like Lee as a character he never backs down or lets Dirk walk all over him, but hes sweet and genuinely caring and a really good guy, just what Dirk needs.
The sexual tension is pretty hot and the ending is very satisfying, even though there are two more books to follow.
I really liked this book (and the series) and I give it 4 stars.
    Audio book:
I was excited to see Peter B. Brooke as the narrator, he had done a really nice job with the Dark Horse series by Kate Sherwood, and I figured hed do a great job here, too.
He did not disappoint. His gruff imitation of Dirks gravelly voice is great and his vaguely mid-western accent for the chief is a nice touch. The story takes place in Pennsylvania and I dont know where Peter is from, but he sounds like people who grew up in the area. That added a nice layer of realism to the narration.
His narration is just enough acting and background that it made for a really nice listening experience.
I really liked it and give it 4 stars.
Overall both audio and book: 4 stars
    Good Firefighter Story
I picked this book up because.. HELLO, firemen..

    May/December romance
This was somewhat better than the first story in this series. I actually liked Gil and Tom.
Gil is Zack Kelly's father (Zack's one of the main protagonists in the first story) and Tom is Zack's childhood best friend. So to say this had the potential to be really complicated is an understatement. But despite what the kind of drama that premise might present, I actually found this story to be... Very low on the drama llama factor. Oh sure there was the confrontation with the ex-wife and Zack, but it was resolved fairly quickly. I also think I would have enjoyed this better if we got flashbacks of Tom and Gil's interactions in the past, but I understand that with the big age gap and all, that might have been a tad creepy.
Anyway, this was better than the first story. As always, TJ was amazing and did an excellent job narrating the story.
If you're into May/December romances, you'll probably enjoy this. Even if you aren't, the narrator will probably make you like it anyway.
    TJ Jamesin is truly fantastic

    It's a filler
It pains me to write this...but I must be honest that this book was a little disappointing. I feel like the author wrote this as a filler between books. There are points in the story that just don't add up and I feel like things don't progress in a realistic way. If you take the book at face value you'll enjoy it, but if you always look at a book critically like I do then you might not enjoy this as much as you would if you didn't.

    Publisher's Summary:
Zack met his best friend, Noah, at Harper Lake when they were five years old. Summer after summer, his feelings grew, but he assumed Noah didn't feel the same. But one night when they were 17, Zack kissed Noah...and Noah kissed him back. Zack was sure he did. But the next morning, Noah put an end to their friendship and walked away, leaving Zack with a broken heart.
A year has passed, and Zack goes back to the lake - where every leaf, rock, and turn in the road remind him of the biggest mistake he ever made. He hates thinking about what he lost, and more than anything he wants his best friend back. He figures it'll be the longest summer ever. But then Noah shows up out of the blue, apologetic and more gorgeous than ever. Noah is sweet and attentive, and Zack can almost believe nothing had ever gone wrong. But there's something different about his old friend, something not quite right. Zack doesn't want to ruin the fragile new bond between them, but he has to know...what secret is Noah hiding?
    Members Reviews:
    A bit juvenile, but enjoyable
    Any additional comments?
Zack's family drags him back to the lake house for one final summer before he starts university even though it's the last thing he wants and certainly the last place he wants to be. The lake house is where he's had his happiest times and memories with his best friend Noah and it's where, last year, Noah shattered his heart after a fabulous kiss.
But when Zack returns this time it's different because Noah is there waiting for him, ready to pursue their relationship, and has some serious secrets to come clean about. There's vampires, werewolves, witches, hunters...I don't want to write anything else because it would give too much away.
The story itself is predictable and a bit juvenile, but it's got some sweet and romantic moments. It's all about the whole "true love never dies and conquers all" kind of romance. The sugary sweetness is mitigated by (and I was pleasantly surprised about this) quite a few sex scenes, though O'Shea never goes over the top with the action.
Michael Stellman delivers a solid performance without doing anything to really make or break the story.
Bottom line: A bit juvenile, but enjoyable.
Kind of like an M/M Twilight, only better
What other book might you compare Blood Moon to and why?
Well, Twilight, I guess... In that both stories are in the YA category with vampires, werewolves (sorry, Lycans) and teen love. Except Noah is actually a teen vampire and not a creepy, pedophile, stalker... and Zack, his (initially) human love interest isn't too-stupid-to-live. Oh, and no love triangles. And while there's angst, not the kind that made me DNF book 2 of Twilight because I couldn't stand the characters.
    Which scene was your favorite?
    The confrontation with Noah's grandfather.
If you could rename Blood Moon, what would you call it?
Well, Michael Stellman is one of my favorite narrators, and I've liked every other book I've read by M.J. O'Shea, so this is somewhere in the middle.
    Any additional comments?
This is part of a series of three books, but only the first one has been released on audio so far :(
It's a complete story, though. So if you're worried about a cliffhanger ending, don't be.

Cassidy Monarch had dreams to sing, to be famous, to tour the world at the head of his own rock band. Then his parents were killed in a tragic accident, leaving him to raise his two siblings. Determined to hold on to what remained of his family, Cassidy settled into an ordinary life, his dreams of fame reduced to occasional nights of singing at karaoke dives. But his careful, ordinary life began to fray with his new job, and the beautiful, charming boss who reminds him of all the things he tried to stop wanting.
Malcolm Osborne is a classic rags-to-riches story, a foster child who wound up with the perfect family and more money than he knows what to do with. He's wealthy, beautiful, successful, and completely miserable. Then he hires a new worker for his office, a young, hardworking man with a sadness in his eyes that Malcolm aches to banish, hoping that in doing so he will be rid of his own loneliness as well.

    Wonderful Surprise
This is a great listen. I really didn't know what to expect as I have not read any books by this author. But since Paul Morey is one of my favorite narrators, I took a chance. Glad I did. This was a wonderful story of a young man's sacrifice for his family when parents are killed and he is forced to bury his dreams in order to take care of his young brother and sister. The other MC is a great character who is unexpectedly wealthy after being raised in the foster system to two unrelated by blood brothers. The brother's dynamic is fantastic and funny as hell. But their love for each other comes through loud and clear. All these dynamics come together for a great romantic story. Worth a credit.
How did I miss listening to this sooner?
I dont know why I havent read this sooner!
    It was fantastic!
Cassidy is an amazing vocalist on the cusp of setting the music world on fire when his parents die and hes left in charge of his younger siblings. He ends up getting one crap job after another for years and is only now working at an office job that seems to appreciate him.
Malcolm is a foster kid who struck it rich. Now he and his other foster siblings work together on various projects including an entertainment enterprise.
At first there are some questions: Is he gay? Can I get in trouble fraternizing with a fellow employee? Are we too different? Etc.
Eventually coincidences collide and the two meet and then are forced to deal with these questions AND their attraction.
    **
I loved Cassidy and his story. Up until the very end, his was a real and very authentic story of struggle and doing the right thing. There were a few instances about the ending that felt a little rushed or set up to keep the lovers apart, but they were small. (IE the coincidence of the band, the sudden change of heart, his unwillingness to see his siblings as adults)
Malcolms story was more fantasy than anything else. I would have liked it a bit better if his story held some more realism in it but again, a minor complaint.
I am looking forward to the upcoming sequels and frankly couldnt put this book down once I started it!
    Audio
Paul Morey is a favorite of mine and I loved his narration here as well. I still think his Spanish accent sounds a bit too much like his Russian accent, but it still gives the story that exotic flavor and helps to differentiate the characters so well.
All in all I give both the book and the narration 4.5 of 5 stars
    Great Morey Narration!

    Members Reviews:
Gay raised in the south & religous homes must read
Would you consider the audio edition of Pray the Gay Away to be better than the print version?
I personal grew up in the South and my father was a Baptist minister. Sara York understands the unspoken rule that a Southern ministers family must portray the "image of perfection". The second rule is that "parents are always right" and "children are always wrong". Southern culture often places ministers and their families as examples of the "perfect family". Therefore, if you are gay then you must lie or die but never shame the family by telling the truth. That is what this book is about. I personally know how accurate her image is of a Southern ministers family is because I grew-up in such a family. It is what all gay youth should never face.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Pray the Gay Away?
The accurate depicting of what an ultra religious ministers family.
Which character as performed by Jason Frazier was your favorite?
Jason Frazier ability to switch voice between adult and child stimulates the emotional power of this performance.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
The last two chapter bought me to tears and anger. The level of intensity caused my to yell out "hit the basted and fight back". However, It very hard to fight back when you think your actions have the power to destroy those that you love.
Heartbreaking and Beautiful tale of young love.
Would you consider the audio edition of Pray the Gay Away to be better than the print version?
    I don't know, I've only listened.
What did you like best about this story?
Billy! I cannot wait to listen to his story. When Frazier spoke those words that York so beautifully wrote, "I don't think God made me right." I literally died! I had to stop and walk away from the story for a few days, it just broke my heart. It endeared me to the character though, and I'm excited to see where Billy's journey takes him.
What does Jason Frazier bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
The youth of the characters. His voice is vibrant and exciting when needed, and then it's defeated and broken down as well. I loved the voice he gave these characters.
If you could take any character from Pray the Gay Away out to dinner, who would it be and why?
    Billy!
    Any additional comments?
Anyone on the outside looking in would think that Jack Miller has the picture perfect life.

    Better the second time
Normally I am a great fan of Josh Lanyon and Kevin R. Free, this time however, I struggled to get through. I don't remember listening to most of it.
I did re-listen on a short trip I took and was able to appreciate this audiobook more. Don't use a credit on it.
    Another paranormal thriller!
I've been eagerly awaiting another Josh Lanyon paranormal thriller since "The Ghost Wore Yellow Socks" (one of my all time favorites). Although short, this new story was a classic JL romance with some spooky overtones. As usual JL masterfully handles the romantic tensions between the main characters while also building interest in the premise of the story (the haunted mansion). The characters have back stories and are as charming (or roguish in the case of Sam Devlin) as usual. I liked this story a lot, the only complaint was that it was too short, which is understandable as it was part of a compilation. But I can see the possibility of a sequel, or even a series??? (Oh please tell me there is another book coming!)
    Yay for Sam and Rhys!
    Any additional comments?
I loved the fact that Sam wasn't movie star beautiful.
Fabulous audio, and even though only 3 hours, I felt so connected with these two. Another wonderful audio with a fantastic performance.
    Great Spooky Story
Another winner by Josh Lanyon and Kevin Free. This is a wonderful, spooky short story with a HFN romance. I listened to it in one sitting and was enthralled the whole time. The only bad thing is that it wasn't longer. I would love a sequel as it ends on a twilight zone type ending. Worth a credit.
    Great story
Josh Lanyon does it again, this time in ghostly style.
You cannot go wrong with any of his novels, and the synopsis does the story justice without giving anything away.
And I really love the fact that Josh has a hand in picking the narrators for his books so your hearing the story how the author wants the characters to sound.
I will reread / re-listen to any of Josh's books anytime. Not really a HEA author but always ends his stories in a satisfying way.

    When you least expect it...
I believe I have found another "must" read author!! A.J. Thomas delivered an exceptional story filled with humor, lust, intrigue, and possibility. Thomas's writing technique draws the reader in and makes you hunger for more. The meeting of Christopher and Doug is one that is very realistic and relatable and their journey to discovery was awesome. The narration by Andy Babinski was exceptional and added to the story. Though I would have loved to have had closure in the story that was Christopher and Doug...the author allowed the reader to imagine the possibilities and being the sap that I am, of course they live happily ever after!!! Excellent book and I definitely recommend. Looking forward to reading more from this author...
    Can't stand the narrator
Would you try another book from A. J. Thomas and/or Andy Babinski?
Yes the story was good but the narrating was beyond irritating
What other book might you compare A Casual Weekend Thing to and why?
I think I'll buy the book because I was interested in the plot
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
The voice was completley wrong for the genre of book. I could not get into the story because the voice was grating and lacked any sort of emotional range
    Good story. Wrong narrator.
Just finished the audio book of A Casual Weekend Thing by A.J. Thomas. Great story, but I almost couldn't get through it because of the narrator. He had the least sexy voice ever. For some books, that would work fine, but he made all the guys in this book sound like creepers. I see there is a second book out. I hope when Dreamspinner produces the audio version, they chose a more appropriate reader.
As far as the story goes...I enjoyed the characterization. Christopher and Doug were interesting, thought I really wish the author would have left off the lame back story and nightmares for Doug. It felt like an afterthought, and didn't really add to his character or the plot. I liked his struggles with prejudice as a Native American. That was enough. No need to try to make him more damaged.
The plot moved quickly. There was enough mystery to keep me guessing. The love story was handled well.

    Super sweet romance
I really enjoyed this listen. Cole is a survivor of an abusive relationship and is forced to come back to his hometown to sort out his hoarder parent's estate. Jeremy is the local antiques dealer that assists him. The story is not great, but the romance that develops btwn the men is really sweet. The narrator does a great job. Worth a credit.
Loved it until the end... and odd narration
As my husband always says, "With Heather, the stranger the better." I love weird, what can I say?! When I saw this book was a M/M about hoarders I HAD to give it a go. I love anything to do with hoarders! (Again, I'm strange)
As far as the story goes, this is a really angsty one. It has as much to do with domestic violence as it does with hoarding, so people who have issues reading about abuse, beware.
The story started out VERY strong, like 4 star + strong. I loved fragile, recovering Cole and seeing him learn to trust again. He felt very real, and acted how I would guess a victim of domestic abuse would. I dug his chemistry with Jeremy, and I LOVE a bisexual character, so kudos to the author for putting more of those in M/M romance.
The overall vibe was a very slow burn, hurt-comfort story, with some nice, hot scenes.
However that ending... RAGE. I thought it was an extreme cop out. Hated it. No spoilers here but it was rushed and left me feeling empty, angry, and with unresolved issues.
    A note on the narration:
This was my first time listening to J.P. Handler and, I have to say, it was a strange experience. He has an extremely robotic way of narrating, with no differentiation between the characters' voices. However, oddly enough, I think I enjoyed it?? I'm not going to try to over-analyze it, but I didn't hate the masculine robot vibe... I know, strange.

Mediacore narration with a pretty decent storyline
Where does Unearthing Cole rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Lower down the list, sadly. Bad narration can ruin an otherwise fantastic story. The narrator wasn't all that, but the story did manage to keep me intrigued, so kudos to the author. And that ending, fanfuckingtastic!
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
    Different narrator
What didnt you like about JP Handlers performance?
    I didn't
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Something happens at the end, it's one of the few times Karma actually does come back and bite someone in the ass. I loved it!
    Any additional comments?
I think I might suggest reading this one in lieu of the audio, just because the storyline was good but the narrator...
