    Disappointed
Is there anything you would change about this book?
If I was a writer I would make this book an equal to Iris's usual work.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Backfire?
    Getting to the end.
What three words best describe Jim Meskimen and Deanna Hurst s performance?
They were great, it was the story that was poorly writen
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
    I doubt it.
    This is a terrible book
What would have made Backfire better?
I am sorry but when the women reading this book does the child's voice it is like chalk on a blackboard and I HAVE to quit listening
Would you ever listen to anything by Catherine Coulter again?
    No
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Quit trying to sound like a child
    Not her best.
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
It was an okay book. Not sure I would recommend to friends.
If youve listened to books by Catherine Coulter before, how does this one compare?
Listened to many Catherine Coulter books before and "Back Fire" was a little disappointing.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I did not like the dual narration. There was too much "he said...she said."
    Any additional comments?
It took a couple of hours of listening to get into the characters of this book. There were too many characters from the beginning so it made it difficult to keep up. The dual narration just added to the confusion. I usually like Catherine Coulter novels but "Back Fire" was not one of my favorites.
    Backfire backfired
What did you love best about Backfire?
My husband and I both love to listen to the FBI series on our longer drives and travels - the story was great.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
The major drawback to this book was the narrator. Fortunately our desire to hear the story kept us listening but would prefer not to listen to this narrator again.
    Any additional comments?
Looking forward to the British series.
two narrators ruined this for me
The decision to have two narrators -- one male, one female -- read this book seems to me a bad production call. The guy says something, then the woman reader interjects (in her simpering delivery) "...he said. Then he sighed..." and the guy continues to read the male part. The material seems trite enough to begin with, but this tradeoff between dueling narrators -- in the course of a single *sentence* for crying out loud -- made this unlistenable for me. I remember enjoying several of Catherine Coulter's earlier novels so I gave this one a try.

Whats the point in solving murders if were all going to die soon, anyway?
Detective Hank Palace has faced this question ever since asteroid 2011GV1 hovered into view. Theres no chance left. No hope. Just six precious months until impact.
The Last Policeman presents a fascinating portrait of a pre-apocalyptic United States. The economy spirals downward while crops rot in the fields. Churches and synagogues are packed. People all over the world are walking off the job - but not Hank Palace. Hes investigating a death by hanging in a city that sees a dozen suicides every week - except this one feels suspicious, and Palace is the only cop who cares. Whats the point in solving murders if were all going to die soon, anyway?
The first in a trilogy, The Last Policeman offers a mystery set on the brink of an apocalypse. As Palaces investigation plays out under the shadow of 2011GV1, were confronted by hard questions way beyond whodunit. What basis does civilization rest upon? What is life worth? What would any of us do, what would we really do, if our days were numbered?

    There was trepidation ...
Would you listen to The Last Policeman again? Why?
yes, it was an engaging listen.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Naomi, she broke my heart and we never even heard her whole story. And we didn't need to.
Which character ??? as performed by Peter Berkrot ??? was your favorite?
    Detective Culver
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I cried ... don't want to spoil it.
    Any additional comments?
I will be honest, I was hesitant to read this book. I have read so many Pre-Apocalypse books over the years that I was sure this was just another cookie cutter of a novel. But I figured it would kill some time and maybe be a little entertaining.
I am so happy I was wrong.
This book is truly just a wonderfully engaging, and heart breaking, murder mystery with the impending apocalypse used as a backdrop that does not overwhelm the story or the characters. But it is a backdrop of rich flavor and intensity, the author gives you a true feeling and perspective of what the nation at large is going through without ever really leaving the stories little corner of the continent.
Its The End of the World As We Know It
I had The Last Policeman by Ben H Winters on my wish list since it was released a couple of years back. It combines a genre I love (apocalyptic) and an interesting idea. If you knew the world was going to end what would you do? So I finally took the plunge and recently read The Last Policeman and enjoyed it.
The Last Policeman follows Hank Palace and his journey as a detective as the world approaches an impending doom. My biggest issue with the book was that it lacked character development. We learn very little about Hank, his family, friends, or even his co-workers. The book jumps straight into a murder investigation and uses the impending astroid to change the typical crime solving formula up a bit. Its an interesting twist but could have used a couple hundred more pages to understand how the world has changed because of the impending asteroid and more insight into the characters.

    Couldn't Listen
What disappointed you about Twist of Fate?
I can't really judge the story because I could not listen to the narrator. He was awful. He sounded 108 and I could hear him do this strange licking/clicking sound. I really tried to ignore it, but I just couldn't. I urge anyone thinking of buy the book to listen to the sample.

    Title: Sunset Limited
Subtitle: A Dave Robicheaux Novel, Book 10
    Author: James Lee Burke
    Narrator: Mark Hammer
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 12 hrs and 28 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-26-12
    Publisher: Simon & Schuster Audio
Ratings: 4 of 5 out of 295 votes
Genres: Mysteries & Thrillers, Modern Detective
    Publisher's Summary:
Detective Dave Robicheaux returns to center stage in an incendiary new novel by James Lee Burke. A gripping tale of racial violence, class warfare, and the sometimes cruel legacy of Southern history, Sunset Limited is a stunning achievement, confirming Burke's place as one of America's premier stylists as well as master storytellers.
The 40-year-old crucifixion of a prominent labor leader named Jack Flynn remains an unsolved atrocity that has never been forgotten in New Iberia, Louisiana. When Flynn's daughter, Megan, a photojournalist drawn to controversial subjects, returns to the site of her father's murder, it quickly becomes clear that her family's blood-stained past will not stay buried. Megan gives her old friend Dave Robicheaux a tip about a small-time criminal named Cool Breeze Broussard, scarcely suspecting that the seemingly innocuous case will lead Robicheaux and his partner into the midst of a deadly conspiracy.
Combining brilliant prose, crackling suspense, and an exquisite sense of character and place, Sunset Limited is a wrenching tale of historic violence and soiled redemption that reveals one of America's finest novelists at his masterful best.

Narrated by Mark Hammer AND Will Patton?
Just finished listening to this--and loved it. However, I am totally confused that both of these actors are listed as narrators. It is Mark Hammer only. What gives? When I read the reviews of this series, I see that very few folks are either/or about these two--some really do NOT like Hammer's accents or pronunciations, so much so that it ruins the book for them. If they purchase this thinking that at some point Will Patton is going to be reading, they will be sorely misled. I hope this will get corrected.
I also hope that audible.com will release more of this series in unabridged form. I never fail to enjoy the stories or characters and Mr. Burke's inestimable prose--with only one misstep in narrators (Nick Sullivan)--which is a pretty good record, over all.
Toby Belch and Filler? Not Burke's best.
Yep, I have liked Streak Robicheaux enough to read ten of his stories to date. Mark Hammer's an important reason. He's among the greatest voices to have worked in this audio media. And yeah, Dave Robicheaux's life and mind are still fascinating as he tries to focus the American South through his very liberal lens where all people of color are noble yet bruised by all white people of affluence who have both inherited and continue to stain their own souls. While there's complexity of plot and character there's no nuance in Burke's judgement of this deep- Louisiana culture. To Burke, there is no New South, except as an irony. Little surprise that Alec Baldwin's been casts as Robicheaux in movies.
But in 'Sunset Limited' I began to find what was an engaging eccentricity in Robicheaux's internal monologues to have grown into an oddness bordering upon a distracting contradiction.

    Publisher's Summary:
Once, Kate Shugak was the star investigator of the Anchorage D.A.'s office. Now she's gone back to her Aleut roots in the far Alaska north - where her talent for detection makes her the toughest crime-tracker in that stark and mysterious land.
    Members Reviews:
    Kate goes fishing for killers
The Kate Shugak books are usually credible, compact mysteries, set against a backdrop of some significant aspect of life in Alaska. "Dead In The Water" has Jack Morgan getting Kate to go under-cover as crew boat fishing for crab off the Aleutian Islands, to investigate the disappearance of two former crew members.
What follows is a vivid description of what life on board is like and an mystery with enough twist and turns and action and physical danger to keep everything moving along nicely.
For me the "whodunit" aspects of the Kate Shugak novels are secondary considerations, a frame for hanging the important stuff from. When the book is back on the shelf and time has passed, it's not the plot twist that stay with me but the vivid scenes of Alaskan life and what I learn about Kate Shugak.
"Dead In The Water" has several of these memorable moments: Kate drinking with a crew of Russian fishermen in a bar in the port, all of them trying to woo her in a semi-serious, larger than life kind of way; Kate's enounter with a young, deformed, Aluet girl who interprets life by using a storyknife to draw in the sand on the beach and her basket-weaviung grandmother who shares details of the history of her people and Kate's plunge into the freezing depths, trapped in a crab cage. All of these are told with a skill and an eye for detail that makes them real and compelling.
Kate is the centre piece of all of these novels. She is the reason I keep coming back. I this novel I got to see her as a woman confident enough of her own attractiveness and her own strength to spend time with the Russian sailors without feeling threatened by them or offending them. I saw the softer side of her in her gentle teasing of her young, over-enthusiastic Californian-surfer crewmate who loves EVERYTHING Alaskan. I saw the heart of her in her passionate relationship with Jack Morgan. I saw her again tracing the impact of her heritage and her culture in her deference to the elder who teaches her to weave and her affection for the young girl telling stories written in sand.
That is more than enough to make any book successful and is quite extraordinary for a short, crime-fiction novel.
The best of the first 3 books!
I began the Kate Shaguk mystery series recently so I have only read the first three. I love the Alaskan setting and feel it actually serves as a character of its own. And in this book we entered the world of crab fishing. It was a really great plot with all the tension needed to keep the mystery moving forward. Kate was in peril. Kate made new friendships. Alaska and its wether played a big role. The "bad guys" were really unlikable and the "good guys" were equally likable. It was good book. The only thing I wanted was more -- more book. The books in this series are short and I really wish they were longer.
It's a good thriller but a lousy mystery.
This is my first book involving Kate Shugak but I didn't have the feeling that I missed much.

    The Best For Last
If you are reading this, there's a good chance you've listened to the other twenty titles in the McGee series . . . experienced 20 years of John D MacDonald's McGee magic in just a few, short months and know what an incredible cultural treasure these recordings represent.
Here, now, is the last McGee novel ever, maybe the best McGee novel ever and assuredly the most heartfelt McGee novel ever. Savor this one, because there ain't gonna be any more.
Savor also Robert Petkoff's brilliant characterizations. I had my doubts, at first, but Petkoff has proven himself to be one of the best audiobook narrators ever, taking the listener on a trip back in time . . . to a world peopled by all the wonderfully quirky characters of MacDonald's imagination, bringing them from the written page to life with skill and style.
    McGee's Last Ride
The last book of the Travis McGee series ended on both a high note and a low note. The low notes occurring as the author attempted to tie up all the loose ends of McGee's life. Willie Nucci of The Scarlet Ruse returns dying of cancer; perhaps as the author's stand in. Someone is leaving pipe cleaner cats on "The Busted Flush" and since I don't want to spoil the ending for anyone. I'll just say that it totally invalidates the ending of a previous book that was pretty convoluted and unlikely already. The last Meyer/ McGee party on some deserted tropical island several names from previous books are seemingly tossed in randomly to establish a connection to previous works. As are several names in one of the earlier chapters where the names of past characters now dead are named. It felt as though the soul reason for this portion of TLSR was that the author knew he was dying and was making an effort to tie all the loose ends of the series together. This seemed a useless effort on the part of John D. who with a few exceptions usually usually tossed in names of new characters in each book as though they were old friends.
Which brings us to the positive aspects of the penultimate McGee. Trav's client is his old friend Billy Hanrahan; another of those old friends who somehow escaped mention in the first twenty books in the series. Billy and his new wife Millis have just had their brand new custom built yacht stolen and Billy contracts Travis to get it back. When he finds it there are three dead bodies on the boat. the kids who stole it and a girl they picked up in Mexico. At that point the attempts on McGee's life begins. In this vein McGee goes off on a rant concerning the American Government's war on drugs that contains more cogent points in three pages than thirty years of statements by political and law enforcement officials. All books and all series contain problems and weak points.

    Critic Reviews:
"Taut.... Absorbing.... Better than her best." (New York Times Book Review)
"I have often thought of mysteries as the sorbets of literature, something light and tangy to clear the palate between more serious courses. The books of P.D. James, however, are more substantial fare, fulfilling as well as delicious, and Devices and Desires is no exception." (Washington Post Book World)
"A masterful writer.... Devices and Desires seems to be that highly prized work - a terrific tale of suspense and detection that also delivers the satisfaction of a mainstream novel." (Wall Street Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Great Interesting Read, Good Performance
I enjoy the English reader, she does a good job with this book. Nice change of pace. The story is the thinking kind of mystery with enough colorful characters and interesting English countryside to hold your interest through a relatively long book.
    A well wrought mystery
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Possibly, but only after warning said friend of the sub-optimal sound quality and the old-lady narrator, both of which made me give up listening several times before I finally got deep enough into the mystery that I really cared whodunnit.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Adam Dalgleish....and the motherless child, Teresa Blaney.
What aspect of Penelope Dellaportas performance would you have changed?
I would have chosen a younger (or at least less old-lady-sounding, less stuffy-sounding) narrator.
If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?
    Murder on the Headlands
    Any additional comments?
The narrator did have good vocal inflection and prosody/expression, which ultimately made the listening experience superior to reading the print version alone (I did both).
    Another book ruined
Yet another book ruined by an ill-chosen narrator. I usually, always, listen to the preview of the book because the narrator can make or break the book for me. This time I realized instantly that I did not. While Ms. Dallaporta's normal voice can be characterized as 'fingernails on a chalkboard,' when the characters become emotional, she squawks like an hysterical myna bird. Ugh. I made it two-thirds of the way through before I concluded that the victim probably committed suicide to avoid listening to Ms. Dellaporta any longer.

    Any additional comments?
I'm delighted that Travis McGee is on Audible. The books are entertaining and still have some excellent writing, although some philosophy found here is not PC.
A man from the first half of the 20th century
These are classic mystery stories written at a time when $10,000.00 was equal to $100,000.00 in today dollars. Also men and women had different rolls. If you take that into the balance of the story, you can enjoy the mystery, and how Trav solves each problem he encounters. I have started with book one, and have now completed book 7. They all get better I have found. Just have to get used to some of the dated language and interplay between characters. It's not 2012, but late 1960's. I still find the stories really well written and have enough mystery and strange turns of events to make each Travis McGee story a gem.
    stark hollywood
What we get here is a piercing fiction of what is most likely pretty real in the stark worlds of hollywood. Worthwhile.
    I'm hooked!
I've read 4 of the books in this series and I am so hooked!. Robert Petkoff does such a wonderful job on the narration that I find myself searching for more books he has done.
Travis McGee is quite a character and I can't wait to read the next book.
    Travis' Travelogue
A Hollywood sex symbol Lysa Dean is receiving threats from someone who sounds quite deranged. Enter Travis McGee; he and Lysa's private secretary Dana Holtzer hit the road investigating the other people pictured in the orgy photos. While traveling through Florida to upstate New York; to San Francisco; to Las Vegas; to Phoenix Travis narrows down the the suspect list, and finds a killer. Dana naturally falls in love then into bed with him; huge surprise. The stopover in Vegas gives McGee an opportunity to verbally bash lesbians as MacDonald shows another side of his misogynistic attitudes. Then there is the ever present condescension MacDonald seems to feel for most of the human race.

    Publisher's Summary:
    Audie Award Nominee, Fiction, 2013
Academy Award nominee Samuel L. Jackson (Pulp Fiction, Star Wars films), fresh off the success of his uproarious, Audie-nominated performance of the mock childrens book Go the F**k to Sleep, delivers a swaggering, darkly-humored rendering of Chester Himes classic first novel.
Himes, described by The Sunday Times as the greatest find in American crime fiction since Raymond Chandler, was no stranger to the world of crime: in his late teens and early 20s, he served 7 years in the Ohio State Penitentiary for armed robbery, the confession to which was beaten out of him by the police. He delivers the tale of his hopelessly naïve hero suddenly finding himself on the run from a hypocritical and far-from-heroic police force with lurid violence and brutal humor. There is no voice better than Mr. Jacksons to narrate this hardboiled story of love and crime, set in a richly imagined, mid-20th century Harlem.

    A Visit to Another Era
An astonishing experience for a suburban white woman, to be transported to Harlem in the 1950s, and Himes (whom I'd heard of, but never read before) made it an unforgettable trip. The story is deliciously convoluted and the characters are perfectly presented, universal figures, yet each utterly one of a kind.
I was a little confused at first, because the lead characters in the series appear more than halfway through the story, and appear as secondary characters. This was Himes's first in the series, so perhaps he didn't realize he would use them again at the time he wrote it.
What set the whole thing sizzling was Samuel L. Jackson's extraordinary, sharp and loving performance, making each character uniquely memorable. I can't say enough about how much his power and enthusiasm got me sucked into the story completely.
    Hardboiled Goodness
I'd heard of Chester Himes's Harlem Cycle before, but if it hadn't been for this new "A-List" collection and Samuel L. Jackson's narration, it might have been a while yet before I'd gotten around to this series. Taking place in Harlem, the story revolves around a naive man called Jackson who, when we first meet him, gets taken in by a team of fraudsters who convince him they can "raise" denominations of 10 dollars into 100 dollar bills. There's plenty of humour there, which combines well with the otherwise hardboiled world of gangsterism, drugs and violence. Not for the faint of heart, but deeply satisfying if you like your mysteries served up on the tough side.

You don't have to be a connoisseur of noir thrillers to enjoy this fast-paced tale of love and greed in 1950s Harlem. Even though my only exposure to Dashiell Hammett and Raymond Chandler is via Humphrey Bogart, I could immediately see the parallels between those stories and this one, albeit A Rage in Harlem features an all-black cast of characters. And they are every bit as strange and memorable as the Fat Man or Joel Cairo or Vivien Rutledge.
