Favorite Revisited

I was excited about revisiting - in audio - a series of books which I have so enjoyed over the years. In one way, I was not disappointed, because the performance by Steve West is quite good, and all the quirky characters I remembered are still there. The aristocrats, the wannabes, the shop-and-bar keepers.

But, on the whole, these characters have not aged particularly well. Although the "pub" title trademark remains interesting, "Aunt Agatha" and "Melrose Plant" now seem more the copies from older British mysteries that they actually are. There's a dated, self-conscious feeling here that is not as apparent in the original, classic series of Dorothy Sayers, Ngaio Marsh, Marjorie Allingham and, to some extent, Agatha Christie.

Is it possible that American authors really can't quite capture the traditional, cozy British who-done-it? Maybe - and I think I'd rather just remember the Jury/Plant series as something I really liked 25 years ago. No need to revisit.

Love this series, but FYI

I've just finished listening to book 13, and I have absolutely loved every one so far! The recurring characters and the relationships between them are very entertaining and often hilarious. I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys murder mysteries without all the stress.

The FYI part is this:

The first book in the series was published in 1981, and was contemporary fiction. Hard as it is for me to believe, 1981 was 33 years ago! I suspect, though, that the author never expected the series to take off and to still be writing the books all these years later. The main characters in the series are Richard Jury and Melrose Plant. I picture them in age as between 35-40. The thing is, I don't think they can ever get much older than that and have it all still work. However, time and technology continue to march on and, to keep the series contemporary, things like computers and cell phones have to come into play. Also, Jury having been a small child in WW2 was perfectly in line in 1981, but by now he would have to be elderly.

What I do is just mentally keep the characters in the same approximate age frame they started in, and ignore any references to the passage of time that the author inserts in the text. Just sort of let time and world events go by in the background, while the characters stay the same. There were enough comments in book 13 about the passage of time and people not changing after all these years, that I'm guessing the author was maybe poking a little fun at her predicament.

I'm awaiting the Audible release of the next book at the moment, but I hope that she hasn't done anything to blatantly age the characters in the rest of the books.

One of her best...

Where does Friends in High Places rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?

Have always liked her stories of Comissario Brunetti and descriptions of one of my favorite cities, Venice. I think Donna Leon is perfecting her craft with each book, and Friends in High Places absolutely finds her at the top of her game. David Colacci is one of the best narrators working today.

The story itself was fast moving, had enough characters to make it interesting but not confusing, and kept my interest throughout.

Am looking forward to her next and next and next!! Keep them coming, Miss Leon!!

ANOTHER GREAT COMMISSARIO BRUNETTI MYSTERY

I'm addicted to this series! (I almost stopped writing reviews because of 2 "Audible Haters" who have systematically gone through all of my submissions and marking them "Not Helpful" for no reason other than spite. But last week, I reported the harassment so the website reps are investigating to find out WHO the perpetrators are.)

Although this series can be a bit inconsistent, overall most of the novels are worth the rare miss. The characters are finely drawn and the added detail about Venice makes the listener feel as if we are really there. Narrator David Colacci is perfect. Not so much a thriller than a great detective mystery, the slower pace is worth the plot twists and turns which always keep you guessing.

Corruption and the abuse of power in Venice

In what may be the quintessential Guido Brunetti novel, our hero faces unanswerable questions of right and wrong in both his personal and professional lives.

I will confess to being a die-hard Brunetti fan, but within the series not all books are created equal. This one will fall into my top three.

We see plenty of the Brunetti offspring and of two of my favorite female characters in contemporary fiction - Guido's aristocratic wife Paola and the power-behind-the-throne at the questura, Signorina Elettra.

Although Brunetti often despairs of the convoluted bureaucracy of Venice, here he becomes completely entangled within its strangling tendrils. Against his better judgement, he uses his connections and social debts to uncover the truth regarding the death a man he met in oddly upsetting circumstances. Along the way, he drags many others into the maelstrom he started.

David Colacci is Guido Brunetti to my ear.

Excelllent Adventure in Listening

For me this was an excellent,unexpected, suspense filled audio book experience. The characters were well defined, the narrators amazing. No cardboard cut out characters here.

The male villians in this are truly creepy. Not the usual "brutal, obvious villians you may hear in other books but these are the kinds of rich, mobster types that I sincerely hope I never meet. They have no remorse and totally justify how they treat women. (Nope it may not be what you think). This had everything, a strong female lead (like this is a movie or a play, sounded like it to me) good romance, sexy scenes, action and adventure.

If you enjoy staying on the edge of your seat....listen to this one.

This book started out really slow. Had to re-start it twice but hand with it. It gets really good once you get past the first few hours.

Another master piece

I love all of Michael Connelly books Harry Bosch is the man. He's smooth he's charismatic he's cunning he's strong and sexy. And Dick Hill is most definitely the right person to narrate, he can put you in the room with the killer or the murder victim. My only complaint is I felt the book was too short, I wanted more. The longer I hear Dick Hill read the more I like him.

I thoroughly enjoy the story and the characters. The author paints a vivid landscape with words.

Yes, I'll listen to it again, to appreciate the construction of the tale and to assimilate the information about each character more thoroughly.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Black Ice?

Don't wish to give anything away, but the last third of the book is fast-paced and exciting.

Which scene was your favorite?

I enjoyed the denouement, when all the pieces fell together.

Any additional comments?

The narrator gives a pitch-perfect characterization of Harry Bosch and his colleagues. I would like to see him portray women more effectively - they sound rather stilted and mincing.

This book seems to be a duplicate of Book #2 but with a different cover..Also it seems to contain an incomplete amount of data to be a completed Book #2. For some reason unknown to me, I couldn't return it for another selection.

Nothing Unnatural about Phryne

All good books should have a little of everything - humour, fear, grief, relaxation and exhilaration. And this book has all those in spades.

I have to say, I've got a bit of a lady-crush on Phryne. She's the kind of gal you love to love. Wild and chic, tough and compassionate, feisty and laid back. She has a wardrobe I'd love to own; a collection of lovers I doubt I could say no to, a butler who makes cocktails I dream about tasting, but most importantly, she always gets her bad guy.

Considering the number of years over which the character of Phryne has strutted her stuff (from 1989 when Cocaine Blues was published, to now in Unnatural Habits), I am continually amazed at how true Kerry stays to her character. Very few authors have the ability to delineate such a clear and resonating character who is maintained in all their glory from book 1 to book 19; especially when the dates of publication span more than 2 decades! But Phryne is just as lustrous a character in book 19 as she was in book 1; not a jot of her wit, passion or intelligence has dulled over time. And while she has grown as a person, there have been no jarring changes in personality traits to disrupt the beautiful flow of the series.

Like many others, I was introduced to Phryne via the Australian ABC TV series, and as someone who has rarely ventured out of the classical literature and fantasy/sci-fi genres, these books have blown me away, and as usual, upon reaching the end of the book I bemoaned the need to wait for however long for the next to be published!

The content of this story line provided ample opportunity for Phryne's strengths and weaknesses to be amplified. With a darker tone to the mystery placed before her, and more at stake than just finding a killer to be brought to justice; the achingly intense sense of futility that Phryne feels as she works her way through this case is very poignant, and cannot fail to strike a sympathetic chord with the listener.

Stephanie Daniels is, as ever, the perfect Phryne. Just as Kerry has remained true to the Phryne character over years of development, Stephanie has also maintained such a solid consistency over the duration of the recordings that each character is instantly identifiable from book to book. She is a pleasure to listen to.

I heartily recommend this book - and if you haven't read the others in the series before it, you won't be disappointed with those either, and I do suggest reading them first.

Another great book with Goldie!

The Goldie cooking mysteries is one of my all time favorite series. This book is another in the line of great reads (or listens)! Lots of twists and turns keeps the listener/reader guessing until the end. I highly recommend.

good book

this book didn't make much sence. the plot kept you guessing, but only because you know the killer from the onset. the plot twists were confussing and not needed. after each twist, only one person remained a suspect. with a cop in the house, the whole affair could have been resolved much faster, but then how could the main character stumble into the hero role? the narrator brought the characters to life.

Have read whole series and this is my favorite ..lots of twists and turns and ghosts

A Delightful Listen!

If you could sum up Sticks and Scones in three words, what would they be?

A delightful mystery. (that's not fair, I have so much more to say, LOL)

What was one of the most memorable moments of Sticks and Scones?

There were so many great scenes, but I really loved the last scene where Goldy is running from her assailant and ends up jumping in the moat, then slogging through the snow to find help. Great action!

Have you listened to any of Barbara Rosenblats other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I must say this woman has a great deal of talent! Her accents were outstanding, her voices all different, I absolutely loved her voice and interpretations. I loved the accent she used for Suki (sp?), the wife of the castle owner.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Tom and Goldy finally talked about the elephant in the room - Tom's old girlfriend.

Any additional comments?

This was my first Goldy Schultz mystery, and I really enjoyed it. I didn't care for the recipes, however, since they seemed very unhealthy and fattening! Made me want to go off my diet, which is bad for a diabetic, LOL. But it was fun cooking alongside Goldy, regardless. ;o)

I'm Just Saying...

Although I enjoyed this book in general, I believe that William Kent Krueger has committed a real author's no-no here. Regular fans of this series (and I am definitely one) will wonder why, if Cork O'Connor has been such a close friend of his Congressman for all these years, he didn't call on him to help when his wife Jo was missing - when he was so desperately looking for anyone who could exert influence in finding a missing airplane.

Why is such a prominent man who was evidently a big part of Cork's youth (and a continuing hunting buddy) a totally new character to us in the 12th book?

This glaring problem aside, "Trickster's Point" is a pretty solid entry in the series. It lacks the blazing action that has opened the last few O'Connor adventures, but the mystery here is an intriguing one. Although I believe most of us will have the who-done-it figured out before the reveal, it's still a riveting story. Cork's strong family values are still front and center, and he continues to present Ojibwe characters and culture in interesting ways. The narrator is terrific.

This is the 12th in the Cork OConnor series. Cork goes hunting with a former friend of his four days before the election which might bring him the governorship of Minnesota, the first NativeAmerican governor. But while they are hunting on the most dangerous spot, Tricksters Point, Cork comes upon his friend with an arrow shot to his heart. His friend asks him not to go for help but to stay with him, so he sits with his friend for three hours while he is dying. Because he didnt try to go for help in that three-hour time, and because the arrow that was shot into his friend is made exactly the way he makes his own arrows, Cork is the prime suspect for the murder. So, in order to make sure he isnt arrested for the crime, and because this man was a friend from his past, he begins his own investigation to find the murderer. These books just keep getting better. It will be one of my top mysteries of the year with many twists and turns and surprises, and a visit with his friend, Henry, the medicine man. Very good.

loved it, but...

What made the experience of listening to Trickster's Point the most enjoyable?

I love WKK and this series. But...it took some getting used to David Chandler in the beginning with the first few books. Then as soon as I've come to terms with him, Buck Schirmer is thrown in there and changing the pronunciations of the Ojibwe words.

Gangsters in Drag in Vegas

Maddie and her strange troop of wackos take Las Vegas and were she real, Vegas wouldn't ever recover.

Totally overblown madcap writing left me in the dust.

This is it for Maddie and I-I thought she and Ramirez were going to actually have successful sex but Maddie freaked out because she had on old panties and hadn't shaved her legs so...no sex. Totally unrealistic, totally juvenile, I'm totally out of here. Bye Maddie...I'm done.

Mental forehead smack! CAN'T READ THESE ANYMORE!!

"Mental forehead smack", "I'm not ashamed to say" that I "soooo" can't read any more of these books!!! It's actually a real shame because these books have so much potential to be fun with a little touch of "who dunnit" but I got to the point when I knew she was going to say "mental forehead smack" and would cringe knowing it was coming. It was incredibly annoying! I'm also curious to know how many times this author used any variation of "to say"... "I'm happy to say", I'm not ashamed to say", "I'm ashamed to say", "I'm embarassed me to say". If it was not at least 50 times in this book, I'd be shocked. And the same goes for the word "soooo". "I am "soooo" not going in there", "Ramirez is going to be "soooo" not happy with me", "this is sooo not working out the way I thought it would"....

What I like about Paretsky is at its best

Each character, the growing and changing relationships of VI, how VI came to be who she is, and how other significant characters came to be who they are, are all the fodder of this novel. I can't imagine it being better.Sadly, I think I have listened to all of her books. I love the audio performances, and what I love most is the most evident in this one. Perhaps it is a bit over the top in its final action scene, but I didn't care, because I can listen to this performance of this particular book and be completely and totally captivated.

If only there were more of these.

exciting action

Blood shot is book five in the Sara Paretskys V. I. Warshawski series. V.I. is an attorney turned private investigator in Chicago. In this book Paretsky gives us a tour of Chicago with all the sights, sounds, smells and history of Chicagos South side. This book was written in 1989 when computers were just starting to be common place but cell phones were rare and expensive. V.I. is hunting for phone booths while searching for change and is using a word processor in her office. Vic returns to the South side to her high school basketball teams 20th re-union of winning the championship as the current team is on the brink of winning. Carolyn who had lived next door to Vic wants her to find out who her father was. Carolyns mother is dying of kidney cancer. She had worked all her life at the local Xerxine plant. In hunting for men her mother knew from work Vic finds many have died of kidney or liver cancer and discovers how toxic Xerxine is. The author juggles wisecracks, tenderness, and grit in a fast pace action filled story. Paretsky always has created great characters and this book is no exception. The book has a great plot and numerous sub plots that keep the readers on their toes. Susan Ericksen does an excellent job narrating the book.

Good story, holds up well, narrator not my style

As a fan of the VI Warshowski series in print, i did enjoy the story overall. There were a couple of instances of lazy research, such as a scene in which the main character feeds grapes to her dog (well known that they cause kidney failure in canines), that just struck me as cheating, but I'm a harsh editor, I suppose.

The narrator, however, was very harsh and brusque in her delivery and everyone sounded angry all the time. Would have preferred more variation in tone and cadence to even our the rough edges.

not that interesting

I really could not get interested in this book. I thought it lagged and a lot of places the narrator was pretty good the children's voices were little over exaggerated and the characters really never connected for me. I just listen to it so I could say I finished it but was ready to put it down halfway through.
