Then theres her widowed mother, who hasnt just been seeing ghosts, shes been secretly dating one: Alisons father. But when he stands her up three times in a row, somethings wrong. Is he a lost soulor a missing apparition? Their only lead is an overdramatic spiritstage name Lawrence Laurentzwho doesnt take direction well and wont talk until they find his killer. Alison will reluctantly play the part of PI, but when the clues take a sinister turn, the writing is on the wall: If Alison cant keep a level head, this will be her fathers final actand maybe her own.
    Editorial Reviews:
Allison Kerby can communicate with ghosts, but her uncanny gift has its price: Allison frequently finds herself in the reluctant role of private investigator for specters seeking supernatural justice. When Allisons late father - himself among her ghostly guests - suddenly disappears, Allison seeks clues to his whereabouts from her new client, a vindictive and vengeful visitor, his death shrouded in mystery. The ensuing intrigue threatens to make a ghost of Allison herself. Portraying the haunted heroine, actress Amanda Ronconi is animated and amiable, emphasizing Allisons role as a caring, compassionate mother. Indeed, Allison is very much a family woman, even if her family is full of phantoms. Nevertheless, as Allison plunges into a plight of peril, Ronconi strikes an increasingly tremulous tone, rife with raw urgency.

Good but not the best in the series
Another fun cozy mystery set at the guesthouse. A few new characters join the existing cast for another case. Similar to past cases Alison reluctantly joins the case and brings along her group with some funny consequences. Well written and plotted out, the only thing I think this missed (other than the summer beach theme) is it was a bit lacking in some of the witty banter what was present in the first couple books. Otherwise it was a lot of fun.
Ms. Ronconi does a great job with the book and really brings the characters to life!
    Love books.
This one is a little slower then the others and could have been shorten a bit. But over all I like it and the evolving story lines.
This is Book #4, listen to Old Haunts before this
Have you listened to any of Amanda Ronconis other performances before? How does this one compare?
Yes, great as usual. She always has a way to bring out the humor of any storyline.
    Snowed in With the Ghosts
Would you listen to Chance of a Ghost again? Why?
    Excellent book for relistening too.
What did you like best about this story?
I liked that it took place in the winter and a big storm hits Jersey.
Which character as performed by Amanda Ronconi was your favorite?
I think Maxie would be my choice as Ronconi really captures the salty ill tempered resentful Maxie.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
No but I did not care much for Maxie being able to fly with Alison so far in a storm. Just seemed to not be something a ghost can do.

    for Rebus diehards only
I recently re-listened to the Rebus series in order since they are all available to me now. Most stood up - or played even better taken chronologically. In this one, however, Rebus is still an Adam Dalgliesh wanna-be, drinking Chablis, reading and listening to the classics, friendship-hugging vulnerable women. And Rankin is still learning how to write. That said, it's still a decent mystery, just not what we'd expect from Rebus or Rankin a little later in their careers. The biggest value was seeing Holmes and Rebus at the start of their relationship.
I really dislike Page as a Rebus narrator - but that's a more personal choice.
Who wants to read about Rebus as a bully?
In this book Rebus is a bully and a selfish cad who blows relationships with women through crude and obtuse behavior.
Great pace and tension though and terrific ending.
    Hide and Seek.,
I really like the dry Scottish Humor in the Ian Rankin Inspector Reubus series. I had listened to about half of the series and decided to listen to them again, in order, which really helps, to keep you from those "what the heck moments "
    Edinburgh Spoken Here
I was mostly into (the audible version) for the spoken dialects to compare with the first season of the BBC version (another "Thank Gawd for Subtitles" show). i'm impressed. i started with "Knots and Crosses" and i'm looking forward to "Tooth and Mail".
    Great Book
Enjoyed very much. Love how Rebus is not "perfect." Off to listen to the next one!

    Extreme Hyperbole & Unsophisticated Dialogue
I have read and reread the readers' reviews of this series. I just don't get it! How could this series have so many fans?
Without judging the whole series, I assert that this book is not well written. Virtually every conversation is heated, almost every interpersonal relationship contains some sexual tension, every decision is critical ... there is no flow, no rhythm, there are no calm and easy moments.
I particularly dislike Johansen's use of dialogue. It is awkward and unsophisticated; it made me think of a high school student who - having read some excellent mysteries - tried to imitate professional style but failed.
The narrator made a mediocre book worse. She uses her voice to distinguish between accents (Scottish voice is well done, for example), but she doesn't do a good job distinguishing between three American women's voices. I struggled to keep up ("Who said that??").
A waste of money, in my opinion. Blech.
Loved how she brought back old characters..
Where does Silencing Eve rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
I read a lot of bad reviews about this series but I really enjoyed it. She brought back characters from her past book and we even got to meet some new. (Zander) I enjoyed the series and it was worth the money for 3 books.
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
    Yes
    great book
great as always, I haven't been able to read all of her books, until now. wish there was different voices for different characters, and some sound effects, that would blow it out of the water
    Silencing Eve
Tonight I had almost ten hours left. I was so into the story that I finished only to wish there was more. It had all my favorite characters from the Eve books. Elizabeth Rodgers is an excellent narrator. The voices and accents were so different for each character that if I didnt know better I would think each character had a different narrator.
    Good mystery.
Although I did not read or listen to the prior book I was able to follow the characters as they were introduced with explanation of how they fit into Eve's life. Fast pace and several twists and turns.

    Members Reviews:
Would have been 4 stars but sex got in the way!
Not a bad story, with good characters, but the story kept taking a back seat to the author's need to turn this into a steamy sex novel. I found it hard to believe that anyone as driven as Kate was to find this killer could continually get so derailed by working with a sexy partner. Could have been a much better book with a more subtle approach to the couple's sexual escapades.
    Spectacular
Keeps your full attention. Well done narration. Never a dull moment and full of suspense. Will listen to this author again.
    Creepy and great!
    Any additional comments?
Great story keeps you wondering. The bad guy was super creepy and the narrator made his laugh send chills down my spine.
    Good read and OK narration..
This was a book about watcher a serial killer that killed Kates twin sister, about 20 years ago. What I didnt understand was why she told Slater about all the other victims and it wasnt until almost 50% that she finally told him about Kassandra, her sister. Why? That didnt make a bit of sense to me. And THEN when Slater didnt tell her about his crazy ex-wife or his dead son Kate was POd at him and told herself she could forgive him but didnt know if she could ever trust him again. What? What was the difference in the two things? His was just a personal matter while hers was part of a serial killer investigation. And THEN when she searched Sheriff Marconis office and found stuff and felt bad about not telling Slater, making excuses why she didnt tell him. Really? WTH? This book was nowhere as good as book #2, which I read first.
Except for the above stupidity it really was a good story. I liked Kate and Slater, and Bauer. And I was sorry about Marconi. The last 15% was the most exciting. The race to find out who the killer was, putting all the clues together, getting a search warrant, racing to the killers house, searching the house and not finding him but knowing he was there somewhere. All of it happened so fast I couldnt turn the pages fast enough.
Again, as with 90% of authors who dont know how to write sexual tension or sexual attraction, there was none in this book either, unless you consider Slater thinking there was sexual tension between them enough. Then just a couple of sex scenes plopped into the book.
There was a swearing and the F-bomb was released 5 times.
As to the narrator: He has a very nice reading voice but hes nowhere near as good and Sebastian Fields, who read the second book in this series, The Avenger... Mr. Forge had only a few emotions through the entire book, but not nearly enough.

I've Read Mixed Reviews and Can Marry Them
If you could sum up Knots and Crosses in three words, what would they be?
    Rebus's Start
Would you ever listen to anything by Ian Rankin again?
Definitely--this is where he gets started but all of following books are better.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Michael Page?
Yes, not as good as McPhearson, but good enough.
    Any additional comments?
Okay, here's the scoop. This isn't a great book--but I would recommend it to Rebus fans because this is where it all got started. It's written by a grad student. It's got plenty of flaws--kind of shallow, trite, all that. But, if you are ua Rebus fans this is w ell worth the listen as you see him at his beginning and you can appreciate Rankin's growth as a writer.
    Classic Rebus, Terrible Narrator
What made the experience of listening to Knots and Crosses the most enjoyable?
This is the first Rebus novel, his orgin story, telling about his time in the SAS and it sets him up for all the other novels and pre Siobhan Clark
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Michael Page?
    Peter Forbes
    Any additional comments?
The narrator is English, which should have disqualified him. it is painful to listen to his attempts at a Scottish accent and his female voices are particularly unsettling.
Exhausting detail on bars and drinking
I kept hoping for something about police procedure or some plot movement, but the only movement was from bar to bar. I was disappointed.
Hard to appreciate a book with a poor narrator
The narration is so frustrating, I can't really follow the story. The narrators voices and accents are unpleasant. The story skips between different characters, but it took at least an hour to realise that was what was happening, as the narrator kept on reading in the same voice and tone. The story might be okay. I'll have to read it instead.
    Meeting Rebus, Properly
The first John Rebus book I enjoyed was Saints of the Shadow Bible (#19). I liked it so well I decided to try the series. It was interesting to see Rebus transform from being almost mechanical and disengaged to become a no-nonsense force of authority not to be toyed with. The book seemed a little slow at first, but kept gaining momentum. Now, I'm officially hooked!

Twists and turns and complications that could only happen to Corinna ensue, involving, bizarrely, nursery rhymes and a tiger called Tabitha.

    Critic Reviews:
"To the usual delightfully quirky characters, lovingly detailed descriptions of food and surprising mystery, Greenwood adds several appended medieval recipes." (
    Kirkus Reviews)
"As with all of Greenwoods work, there is a very satisfactory final answer to the problem and its not the obvious one. This is well structured crime fiction with an idiosyncratic bent. While the bad guys never win, and justice is definitely served, it happens in such a fundamentally fitting manner that the reader is always left wanting more." (
    Australian Women Online)

    Fun!!!
I love Kerry Greenwood's style. Once again, she has entertained me for hours and hours on end.
    Cooking the books
I thoroughly Enjoyed this book. It is part of a series about a young woman baker, and all her various friends old and new,. Shr has many and various mysteries to solve in each book , Most entertaining are the many senarios she encounters while going about her daily tasks.
The reader keeps the story moving along at a nice pace.
I have read many of this authors books , I am never disappointed in anything I have read so far. I loved her Phryne Fisher books, don't miss any of those.
    Another great entry
Corrina, a former accountant, is a perfect size 20 and lives over the bakery that she owns in Melbourne, Australia. She is surrounded by a wonderfully eccentric assortment of neighbors and when not whipping up something fabulous to eat, she helps her gourgeous, private detective boyfriend solve cases.
Please read these books in order.
    My only complaints are:
    1. She makes a nasty remark about George Bush in every story. Why? She lives in Australia!
    2. She talked about making a Hollandaise sauce in this book and mentioned adding cheese. If there's cheese in it, it's not hollandaise!
    It just gets better
What made the experience of listening to Cooking the Books the most enjoyable?
    Everything but especially the food.

    Outstanding!
Lily Ivory is a witch and owner of a vintage store called Aunt Coras Closet. In her time in San Francisco shes gotten into plenty of trouble. However trouble is heading her way like never before. This time in the form of her father and what could likely be a fire demon!! It all starts innocently enough when she goes to a fair and meets a German lady selling antique jewellery. Shes interested in what she has to offer and suspects that she might also be a witch. Her suspicions are confirmed when the lady turns up dead, pressed between wood with cinder blocks on top. The pressing is a old form of torture against witches, which Lily has only heard of. Due to the nature of her death, Detective Carlos calls on Lily to help out and this starts one adventure that Lily nor her friends will forget in a hurry.
I fell in love with this series when I first read Secondhand Spirits. I love Lily as she not just tries to solve mysteries, but also learns what it is like to live in San Francisco and have friends nearby. She was shunned from her own mother and her hometown for being a witch. However her life in San Francisco is pretty great well except for the murders and the fact that her one-time lover, Sailor, has disappeared.
What I love the most about Tarnished and Torn and this series as a whole, is it is never dull and boring. There is always a lot happening but Juliet Blackwell doesnt leave readers lost and unable to connect the dots. It is more than just a cozy mystery, with the paranormal elements and more-than-meets-the-eye characters. In Tarnished and Torn we finally meet Lilys father, who abandoned her as a baby. We discover more about their relationship (or lack there of) and perhaps more about how Aidan feels about Lily. Fans of this series will definitely enjoy some of the sub-plots that have continued on from the previous books.
For me, Xe Sands is the voice of this series. Her portrayal of the characters is beyond amazing. I particularly love the depth she gives to Lilys familiar, Oscar. Oscar is part gargoyle, part goblin and appears a pot-bellied pig. His suggestion on how to solve the case was to hire Miss Marple, and is aghast to find out that she doesnt exist and is made up! This scene alone had my laughing until I cried!! After having experienced the previous books as audiobooks I know I will definitely be continuing on with the series in audiobook format only. I wouldnt hesitate recommend this series to mystery fans and also paranormal fans. Its not one to be missed!
Lily Ivory is saving San Francisco again.
It might have been my timing or the fact that I have been listening to this series too close together that made this book a little tedious.

    A Good Suspenseful Mystery....
I enjoyed this story... and Simon Prebble's narration. The story had enough mystery and suspense to hold my attention throughout. Prebble is the voice of Francis' novels, the voice that brings the story to life. Other Dick Francis novels that I like better are "Break In" and "Bolt"... as I well know, some stories are better than others. Recommend.....
    Another Francis Masterpiece
Dick Francis is hands down the best mystery writer. This book offers intriguing characters and a well developed plot. Then again, all of his books do. Simon Prebble brings it all together with his engrossing style.
    Another terrific tale!
Again, outstanding performance by Simon Prebble of one of my most favorite Dick Francis stories. Of many beloved authors, he is the best, and at least once every year for decades I'd get out and read all 38 of my DF library. Am trying to get ALL in audio versions so I can "listen while I work" on all kinds of activities that require only minimal concentration ... so I don't neglect my chores! :-) I'm so glad I 'found' him way back when, as he's given me SO much pleasure. Wish he could STILL be writing! ... I miss you, Mister Francis (and Mary).
    Another great Francis Book
Great new adventure ... sure never thought people in the horse world could/would be so evil! Kept me guessing about the villian, entertained throughout
    Wonderful
I love Dick Francis he was an awesome author and this book is an example of it. He brings his characters to life, Freddie, Nina, and all the others are bursting with energy,
Simon Prebble is one of the best narrators and really adds to the story, making each character unique.

    Publisher's Summary:
Callahan Garrity is the owner of House Mouse, a cleaning service that tidies up after Atlanta's elite. She's also a former cop and a part-time sleuth. She and her coterie of devoted helpers can ransack a house for clues faster than it takes a fingerprint to set.
Some people might call Callahan Garrity nosy, but she prefers to think of her tendency toward snooping as a healthy interest in the truth. So when news reaches her of her cousin Patti's death during a carjacking, Callahan shakes off her House Mouse cleaning uniform to don her detective's cap. It's not that she doesn't have confidence in the Atlanta police - she used to be among their ranks - but the crime is too incongruous with Patti's suburban life to seem like a random incident.
