Great book, as the others in this series. You won't be sorry that you bought this. It took me a bit to get used to this narrator. She is quiet at times when using men's voices, but I got used to it.

Another great addition

I love this series. It combines an entertaining mixture romance, mystery, construction info and ghostly interactions. I like how Mel approaches each ghostly appearance with enough modesty to know she still has a lot to learn and is not an instant expert. I also enjoy the interactions between Mel and her family and friends. I look forward to the next books in this series.

Great series!

I have grown to love this series. Juliet Blackwell has done an excellent job of creating the characters in a way that is quite believable. Xe Sands does a wonderful job of bringing the characters to life. This is a great duo, don't miss this series!

Juliet Blackwell has written a really fun Haunted Home Renovation series and this is the best book yet. The plot about the reconstruction of an ancient castle captured my attention quickly.

Juliet Blackwell's series about Mel, a lady construction contractor who seems to be able to see and sometimes talk to ghosts, are fun reads. They are light and do not delve into the gruesome black areas that many ghost stories do. Its a great entertaining light read. Even my husband has enjoyed the series!

Juliet Blackwell always keeps you guessing. I love ALL of her series which are all paranormal (ghosts). This series showcases a woman working & a boss/owner of a business in a mans world. If you liked "Ghost Busters" you will like this series.

I love this series but the books are too short!!!

I really wish J. R. Rain would write a full length novel instead of these short novellas. But I have been saying that since I stumbled on to this series. Never the less, I love this series and have read every book in it. Each book shows character and plot development. Samantha Moon is always awesome and I'm glad Fang is back and is friendly with Samantha again. I'm also happy that Samantha and Kingsley have are becoming friendly again. I can't wait for the next book.

Absolutely beautiful

These books have not disappointed me yet. There are so many undertones of scholarly knowledge. The muerder mystery with vampires and werewolves makes it very interesting to read. You won't be disappointed if you know or understand how we are all connected.

Excellent novel!

Marcia Clark has written an excellent story with interesting and believable characters. The narrator did a good job with this audiobook.

It is up there! Definitely top 10 (and I have listened to A LOT of audiobooks)

What did you like best about this story?

I like the concept behind the story and how it was presented. The first chapter was really hard to get through, which I did not expect, but it hit very close to home. I almost had to stop listening to it. But then how the rest unfurled. It was amazing! Such incredible writing.

Have you listened to any of January LaVoys other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to any of the other ones, but I might start. There were some things in this book that I felt like were just catch up for people who had never read the other books. I dont know if those other story lines would interest me much.

Yes! Definitely.

I felt the end was rushed. That is the ONLY downside. I don't want to say too much without ruining it, but I do not like where the book ended. And the epilogue seemed excessive and unnecessary.

Gripping

There has been a mass murder at a high school. L.A. prosecutor Rachel Knight has been called to the scene by L. A. detective Bailey Keller. At first it is thought the two killers killed each other but soon the police realize they may have two or more killers on the loose and threatening to commit even more mass killings.

The book is well written, intelligent, and it kept me reading late into the night. The story comes right out of the headlines. Clark does a good job with various plots threads, keeping suspense high. Every time I think I know how this will end Clark sends me down another path. The author tends to focus more on the psychology behind a mass shooting with Keller and Knight in frequent meetings with the two consulting police psychologist.

I know I have made this comment in the other books in this series, but I question why the prosecutor is acting as a detective. I do realize the Marcia Clarke was a well known prosecutor and knows the job. But in real life, does the prosecutor perform the detective role to this extent? If you enjoy a good mystery this is a book for you.

Can it GET Any Better??

What made the experience of listening to A Vision in Velvet the most enjoyable?

EVERYTHING!!! The story (I adore Oscar!!) ... the narrator ... I cant pick just one.

I did! I listened to it all in one day. I started it on the way to work, listened at lunch, on the way home, at the gym and while hubs played video games. I love this series!!!

I also own a printed copy of this book (which I read first). I had to get the audible version because Xe Sands adds depth to the characters.

A Vision in Velvet

A Vision in Velvet is a great read. As always Lily saves the day. But this time she steps on some big toes to do it. I can't wait for the next book.

The Wrong Voice

I found the first 3 books in this series quite charming.This 4th book was only available with Adam Sims as narrator and, although I knew the switch wouldn't be seamless, I was surprised at how much less I enjoyed the story with him narrating. Listening to Ralph Cosham, each character had a distinct 'voice', but I was still able to get lost in the story and sort of forget Cosham was there. However, Sims' conspicuous acting of every character made it hard for me to hear the story. I really had to force myself to focus in order to take in what was happening. I don't want to miss events in Gamache's life or in Three Pines, but I'll be skipping books 5 & 6 since only Sims' versions are available.

Be aware that this is the same book as the book with the title "A Rule against Murder: A Three Pines Mystery". I made the mistake of buying "A Rule against Murder" and returned it because I already have this one and it is the same story.

Weakest of all Inspector Gamache books so far

I found this a hard book to get into, which is unusual for Louise Penny's books. I have loved all the other Inspector Gamache books and will continue on, listening to the others, looking forward to The Long Way Home.

What does Adam Sims bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

This is where the "but" comes in. His portrayal of all the new characters was great, as was his portrayal of Gamache and his wife and Gamache's subordinates. But, I did not like his characterization of Clara. I thought it was too harsh. I listened to this book after I'd listened to all the others in this series so I know where Clara and Peter's relationship is going. Clara is softer than Adam Sims portrayed her.

Best of this genre!

I love this period of historical novel and McCallin is the best I've read so far. In the beginning it's a bit hard to keep track of all the characters, but stick with it; the book is very well written and very suspenseful. Narration is great including a multitude of voices and quirks vocalic quirks for several characters. I just finished the book and purchased Book 2. Can't wait to keep up with Gregor Reinhardt.

Solid 1st novel of WWII Nazi officer in Sarajevo

Very good first novel by this author. Read it. Here's why :

What attracted me to this book are the few but positive reviews and -- most importantly -- the fact that the story takes place in Sarajevo in 1943. It is an unusual (exotic?) combination of time and place for a novel about a murder investigation. I find many of the modern attempts at publishing historical novels end up featuring bland/overused stories disguised as something new, missing yet another opportunity to tell us what it was like during those days.

The Man From Berlin did not fufill my apprehensions : it was entertaining, original, fascinating and un-pretentious. The narrator did a very good job of speaking with just a touch of a German accent and his intonation fit the style. I learned a lot about the sad and complex history of the peoples of the Balkans. For instance I learned that Sarajevo, today the capital city of Bosnia & Herzegovina, was forced to be included in the short-lived Nazi puppet-state called "Independant State of Croatia" and that the Croat pro-Nazi party (the Ustae) was in charge. A significant number of ethnic Croats were enrolled in German SS divisions made sure Germany's politics were carried out locally. While many atrocities were commited, the author wisely chose to mention it clearly and not dwell emotionally on the subject. The Nazis are favorite villains in fiction and I applaud Mr. McCallin for not feeding the trolls in this work. The subject of Jews cannot be avoided and the author did a very graceful job at casting an era-appropriate view of Hitler's most known ethnic policies.

There are many bad historical novels out there, and quite a few ordinary ones too. The Man from Berlin was a gamble for me. I will definitely be following this author in the future.

The "Good" Nazi....

Reminds me a lot of the Bernie Gunther series by Philip Kerr, not as "Noirish" but really good read with a good tale.

The Smoky Mountains, Dogs & A Mystery

I enjoyed this first book in a new to me mystery series set in the Smoky Mountains. The author did a beautiful job capturing the feeling and texture of the mountain community. Be aware that the dogs in the story are not, for the most part regular family pets. Instead, the characters were involved in professional dog training, search and rescue, and agility trials and work. This detailed information was interesting and added depth to the story. The book was a short one, the mystery a bit easy to solve, but still I felt engaged and I was drawn into listening.

The narration by Donna Postel was really good. She had a great sense of timing, was good at the different voices, and helped to keep the action moving along and upbeat. She was a positive addition to the listening experience.

Recommended if you like mysteries that are a bit cozy with some police procedural discussion--but not too terribly gory and violent. I liked it. An excellent diversion.

Not just for dog lovers

This was a surprisingly seamless work of mystery fiction. the elements of small towns, family, mountain culture, animal training and law enforcement work. It's true to the setting; the passage that details how a driveway that she could see from her house was a five mile drive rings true for a mountain resident. The offbeat element provided by Sonny bright is a nice touch. The intelligence of the border collie rang true as well. Most importantly for me there was no "oh give a break" moment in this story that leaves a terrible taste in the mouth. a moment when some ridiculous convoluted action or event that reminds you of a prime time television drama occurs. Those type of things will often spoil the entire book for me; an author too lazy to come up with a good transition pulling a lame one one out of the air that fits neither narrative nor character. For those who prefer a high level of action in a mystery this story isn't for you. For dog lovers; those with an affinity for Appalachian culture or readers/ listeners who like a story that fits together and doesn't forget the story it's trying to tell it is one you don't want to pass over.

Dog Gone Good

I was immediately engrossed by Smoky Mountain Tracks, my first book by Donna Ball. As a dog fanatic, I loved that Raine (main character) owned a kennel, did canine training and volunteered for Search & Rescue.

I love this modern detective series!

"Uncle" Joey's hit man and enforcer Ramos joins Shelby Nichols as lead characters in this Florida based novel. Husband Chris and their children go home from their Orlando vacation without Shelby as she is delayed while running an errand for mobster "Uncle" Joey. The way author Colleen Helme weaves suspense with humor is fascinating. Protagonist Shelby's life is constantly in danger even as she wins a two person $1 million poker game with a mob boss.

Secrets That Kill is Volume 4 in the marvelous 10 volume Shelby Nichols Adventures series. Since Shelby was shot in the head in Volume 1 of this series she can read minds. Few people know of her new capability but a wider group believe she has premonitions. The novels in the series are filled with marvelous characters. Narration is wonderful. Shelby Nichols Adventures is a fabulous and fun police procedural series.

Perfect blend of action mystery and mind reading!

Who would believe that a family vacation and a simple favor could end up in a life or death battle and a murder? With Shelby Nichols involved? I would!

This, the next installment in the Shelby Nichols adventures from acclaimed author Colleen Helme is another non-stop action roller coaster ride that will keep you coming back for more. I would recommend this book to anyone without hesitation, it is not to be missed. I think Colleen Helme has the potential of being another modern day Agatha Christie.

Usually, I am in real trouble with a Shelby Nichols book (for exceeding my reading budget, and losing sleep!) and this audio book is no exception. As I have been travelling for a living for over four years, normally I need good books to keep me company on long airplane flights. With Secrets That Kill, I was looking for some more long flights, just so I could spend more time listening to the book!

Wendy Tremont King has now established herself as the quintessential Shelby Nichols. In fact, Wendy's voice is SO Shelby at this point that if I heard another actor I would say, "That's not Shelby!" The power and finesse of Ms. King is her understated realism. When she does Ramos's voice, or Uncle Joey's voice, you get the downplayed shift to a deeper more masculine voice, but more importantly you get the menace, the coldness, and the intonations that come with the different personalities. In a narrated audio book, I believe that there must be a symphony between the writer and the narrator. If the voices are not real and believable, the listener's attention could wander. With Wendy King and the Shelby Nichols Adventures, Wendy IS Shelby, and the depth and breadth of Wendy's capabilities makes this audio book incredibly real to the listener.

Another Matt Scudder great story...

I know am biased : i am firmly convinced that Lawrence Block's Matthew series lays on the the top of the thrillers stories of the past 30 years . I've read all the books in "real time" (i.e. when they were first published) and now i've the pleasure to discover them in an audio format. The books have not aged a bit as Matt Scudder's stories provide what one expects from a great thriller : an intriguing and tense plot, engaging characters , great atmosphere and a tension that builds up as you turn the pages . They are well written , captivating and make you feel a great empathy with the lonely hero , Matt Scudder.

Do not miss it !

Block has never failed to impress me with his evolving look at Matt Scudder. So many readers have attempted these books and I've liked them all (Block himself did one and it was pretty good). Joe Barrett might be the best yet.

What does Joe Barrett bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?

Great, subtle accents and a warm, welcoming voice.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes - as it was, I took it to the gym and worked out more than I would have.

Narration Irritating

Reader makes ALL character sound sinister and Elaine sound foolish. Wish someone else had narrated this very good story.

love and enjoy the book. recommend reading this book. the story was great, funny, and sort of sad all at the same time. but mat hung in their up to the end and never let go of his Focus.

As always I was surprised by the ending. In Holmes fashion, Ellery Queen explains it so it sounds so very simple.

What was most disappointing about Ellery Queens story?

I found the commentry irritating, Ellery Queen a poor imitation of Sherlock Holmes and not very clever. The detective's attitude and approach was unbelievable, it was embarrasing to listen to.
