This Inspector Rutledge audio is outstanding!

The latest Inspector Rutledge novel with Simon Prebble's narration is outstanding!

As most audio book readers (listeners) realize, there are not many good writers of "police procedural" novels and even fewer of the very important good narrations.

The Inspector Ian Rutledge series by Charles Todd (pen name for the mother-and-son writing team of Charles and Caroline Todd) is unique for the police procedural genre. The entry in Wekipedia says it best -"The books deal with the cases of Inspector Ian Rutledge, a veteran of the European campaigns who is attempting to pick up the pieces of his Scotland Yard career." In my opinion they are not the typical "who done it" story lines, but more of a what it was like to be a Scotland Yard detective in post World War I Britain tasked with assignments of assisting local police to confirm their suspicions and finding himself having to prove who didn't do it. This latest novel, "No Shred of Evidence", a perfect example.

As with all the novels in this series, Rutledge has to work without benefit of forensics. He must rely on information gleaned from others the most difficult of which is the local aristocracy, who at that time looked down on "the police" and were loathed to cooperate in any investigation that might create any scandal. That and his gut feel, which is expressed in the form of the voice of Hamish Macbeth, a corporal that he was required to execute during the battle of the Somme. A duty that has haunted him ever since.

The first nine novels in the series were narrated by Samuel Gillies. I would rate his narration at 4 stars. For the next nine novels, Simon Prebble took over. His narration goes beyond the typical narrator's reading and is what I consider to be a 5 star performance. Prebble's talent and skill puts him in a class with very few other audio book narrators. As I listen to Prebble's performance, I actually feel transported to the scenes and actions in the novel and become a bystander.

For me, the plot really becomes secondary and it's the details of the scenes, penned by Charles Todd and Prebble's performance that make it all so very entertaining.

English and Exemplary

Would you consider the audio edition of Ice Blue to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version but I thoroughly enjoyed the audio with Davies and his accent. He did a great job of differentiating between characters and pacing.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Ice Blue?

When Hetheridge shows Kate his fencing room and they spar, it was so smooth that they both were just play fighting. The approach to this scene was really well written.

What about Matthew Lloyd Daviess performance did you like?

Matthew was able to portray each main character with a distinction that fit their role. His accents were spot on and his interpretation was perfect.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

This was a fun mystery that had some surprising twists. I really want to know these characters more and bought the next book - looking forward to the character developement.

Meh...

I got this audio book for $1.99 and it was worth every penny. A decent plot, the narrator was good, the class distinctions were set and the characters believable. But, and this is a big but, I did not buy the romance, such as it was. This is a set up for a series, introducing the players and backgrounds. As a devotee of Georgette Heyer, I like sparkle, wit and chemistry in my romances. I found little in this book. An older, titled man and a "council flat" feisty Londoner. Nope. Even the author admitted the unlikelihood. I may read or listen to the others in this series because of the plotting, but if you want romance, go elsewhere.

An amusing and well written mystery

This was a good mystery that kept me guessing. The interaction between the characters and the dialog was amusing and well written. I bought the first three books of the series a while ago but decided to wait for the Audible recording to be released when I heard a sample of the narrator...and I am very glad that I did.

Love this. author. One of the best! Hard to put down once I start. Can't wait to start the next!!

Hart Disappoints

I found Jennifer Hart through Devil in the Junior League, one of my favorite books. I enjoy her Pasta Shop series and, usually, her Laundry Hag series. But I hate this crossover book. When I realized that it was a crossover, I decided to listen to the Damaged Goods books before listening to Christmas Rental, so that I would know the characters from Miami. Big mistake. The 1st Damaged Goods book was okay, mildly annoying. I couldn't finish the 2nd one, and returned the 3rd one without ever downloading it. By the middle of the 2nd Damaged Goods book, I loathed the main character, Jackie, and her brother in law, Logan. Unfortunately, this Christmas Rental book seems to be more about Jackie and Logan than about the Laundry Hag. I won't even be able to finish listening to his book. I really don't understand the hard turn Jennifer Hart has taken with these Miami characters & story. I feel like I'm listening to a cheesy fan-fic writer casting herself as a character in her own romantic fantasy.

Great Entertainment

Can't wait for future installments of the Laundry Hag ! Combining these two separate series prime characters into one book was Great. Anyone who likes reading/listening to who dunnits will love The Laundry Hag!

Funny!

Several laugh out loud moments, excellent murder mystery, with a twist, ghosts! Xe Sands brings it to life. Fully enjoyed this book. I just wish I would have started from the first of the haunted house renovations series. I am now working my way back, but its OK I'm enjoying them too.

Best book in the entire series!

This story kept my complete attention from beginning to end. The setting is an old 4-story mansion in San Francisco that has been remodeled into a "modern monstrosity". A grumpy ghost, classical music, secret passageways and disembodied voices send potential buyers of the $29 million property running from the house vowing never to return. The very wealthy owner, and his heirs, are all desperate to sell and Mel is asked to hunt down as much of the original architectural pieces as possible in hopes of appeasing the grumpy ghost.

During her investigation into the home, Mel finds the murdered body of a very beautiful woman. Standing over the deceased is her oh so handsome brother. Could the brother, or a member of the wealthy family have had a reason to kill this beautiful woman?

On top of that, two more ghosts are present in this story. One is haunting friends of Mel and one is...well, I won't spoil that part of the story for you.

I will say that the ending of the book surprised me, yet delighted me at the same time. Xe Sands did a marvelous job narrating the book and I look forward the Haunted Home Renovation story!

Not great literature but sure is a fun read

Could not wait to get my hands on another Juliet Blackwell book and was NOT disappointed. Its not great literature but sure is a fun read and another exciting ghost story with both interesting and believable characters. Mel Turner is a General Contractor who renovates Victorian houses and along the way removes their ghosts. This particular house has some surprises and not JUST the gaudy modernizations made by the current owner. (Now, those I had a hard time swallowing. Who would buy a Victorian house and remodel it THAT much?) That aside, it is still a fun whodunit. I hate to admit it but I picked the wrong person.

Better and Better!

This series just gets better and better. It seems odd to assign 5 stars to such light lit, but the stars are my measure of the pleasure this delightful author delivers time and time again!

The best of the series so far.

Juliet Blackwell has a way with words that develops a character in the reader's mind.

I love Agatha Raisin & adored all of the series until I got to this stinker... The narrator makes or ,.. in this case breaks

a book.. I've been spoiled by Penelope Keith .. her change of tone and voice for every character.. her inflections and timing are superb..the cast of characters come alive and I happily immerse myself for hours on end with them...

This narrator in the role was flat, monotoned, devoid of depth.. what a pity.. Wanda is capable in other narratives,.. but she is NOT Agatha...

I asked for a refund on this one..

Bring back Penelope Keith

Love the Agatha mysteries and have listened to all up to this point read by Penelope Keith. This narrator is quite inferior. Often I cannot tell which Character is speaking. She makes no effort to change her voice with the different characters. Very annoying., especially since the Penelope Keith versions were free rentals from the library.

Loved it!!

Another great Agatha Raisin mystery. If you've listened to a few of the AR mysterues, you will rate this as one of your favorites. The best part is Agatha ' s Christmas party.

Arrgh! New narrator! Disappointing!

I love all the Agatha Raisin stories, but this new narrator is not very good. She sounds like she's just reading the book, and every character has the same voice.

What happened to Penelope Keith? She was fantastic, and after listening to her for the entire series up to this point, I "know" what Agatha's voice sounds like, as well as Charles's, Roy's, Mrs. Bloxby, and all the other wonderful characters. I can hardly get through this book, and will have to just read the rest of the series, imagining the old voices.

I should have read a sample before buying it.

Good story, lackluster performance

OK, Penelope Keith is the performer I first encountered with the AR stories and quite frankly, she set the bar pretty high. Alas, this performance, while competent, is easily eclipsed by Keith. There is little differentiating of voices and Agatha sounds slight and thin. While the performer tries to echo Keith's voice variantion, this simply isn't done well.

The story on the other hand is entertaining and enjoyable with new characters, a couple of attempted misdirections, and even a final twist. A bit disconcerting in this and the previous episode is a developing over use of expressions. Here, it is "snakes and bastards," and previously, "lugubrious." The repeated use of this phrases gives the stories an affected air and almost kitschy. Using infrequently heard words is a treat from time to time, but their repeated invocation is tiresome.

Another Delightful book from this Series!

Mrs. Rasin is a pugnacious, stubborn, hilarious, lovable character.

RACIST AND INSULTING TO BLACK AMERICANS

I haven't read the preceding books in this series but this one is just awful! The author has chosen a subject - racism in America - which she lacks knowledge and sensitivity. Her depiction of blacks during the World War II era is appalling. In a purely literary sense,I really tried to get past it because the story plot began in such an interesting way. But the author made me feel really uncomfortable. It takes a lot to upset me when it comes to literary license. I fought to have Audible allow reviewers to use the word "nigger" instead of the really outrageous "n-word" if the term is in the book reviewed and does not insult or degrade. I embrace realism in literature. One cannot read a fictional account about slavery and believe that we were referred to as "African Americans". There are instances in which being "politically correct" makes no sense. However, this author stepped over the line in this book, showing a marked level of insensitivity to blacks, Jews, and other minorities and nationalities. I can't speak for the others in any degree of depth, but I can tell you how this book affected ME as a black American.

Much of the book takes place in Washington DC, where I was born and raised. Her depiction of black Washingtonians was way off. She had the black employees in the White House acting like slaves. I was stunned by the way Winston Churchill talked to the main White House steward. This was 1941 but the white people act like it was 1861!!!

Just in general, the author tried to pack in every famous living person of that time, from the Kennedys to Josephine Baker to Ernest Hemingway. The storyline got bogged down in name-dropping after a while. And while I normally enjoy this narrator, she is not suited to acting out such distinctive voices as FDR, Eleanor Roosevelt and Churchill. It was a really painful listen.

I am descended from free people of color who have lived and worked in Washington since BEFORE the Civil War. Susan MacNeal's story enraged and insulted me and my ancestors, some of whom helped to build the White House and Capitol Building.

Title

I totally missed that this was not a Kinsey Millhone book. It wasn't until I started listening that I found my error. I listened to some of this then deleted it. I doubt that anyone needs one of Kinsey Millhone's books explained or WeLoveNovels to interpret it for them. The books aren't rocket science. Disappointed and irritated that I wasted one of my credits on this.

This is a mystery for adults

This is the first mystery I've ever read that is on the spicy side. Nothing gross but it is sexy.

The narrator is very good but her pronunciation of the word "garage" bugs me to pieces! Ugh!

But listen anyway because it's a great story and I can't wait to listen to the next one!

It was not funny at all, just sad

I felt very sorry for the main character through the whole book. The reviews called it funny. There was no funny for me. The heroine was so mired down in horrible situations that you could not see ANY happy ending for her. I don't think I will continue with the series.

Learn to pronounce the dang word!

Honestly, everytime I heard the narrator say the word "garage" I wanted to punch her in the face with my foot. It was distracting and really took away from the story, since whenever she said it I thought about it for at least 30 seconds and missed whatever came next in the story.

I'm really enjoying the series however, I don't like the narrator's voice. If it wasn't for the voice, I'd have to say this is one of my favorites.

Bart Simpson Narrates

I love Scandanavian mysteries, so I was very disappointed I could not get past the narration to enjoy this one. I checked later books in the series, and they are narrated by the same person. Very disappointed, but when I want to hear Bart and Lisa, I'll watch them on tv.

Good at Times, but Unsatisfying

I am a glass half full person so I can easily point out several things I liked about the audio book. The setting is beautiful and remote, the characters are few, but fleshed-out, the writing is easy and flowing. The mystery was traditionally written, more British than Scandinavian. Yet, it was also predictably written. The story starts strong but just seems to run out of steam from the middle point to the end.

The police don't solve it. The solution just happens. The narrator has a wonderful pacing and voices for women and children. The voices for men are hard to sit through.

I have always admired the European view of vacations - taking August off at all costs. Well, I finally found the flaw. What happens to a murder case if it happens the last weeks of July and everyone goes on vacation? Lesson learned -- don't get murdered in late Summer in Europe.

Awful narration

The story is fine but the narration was very annoying, shrill yet wooden. Will not buy the next in the series as the narrator is the same.

Loved the story. I wish that the narrator had an accent. It would have brought more character to this book.
