Subtitle: Sex, Deviance, and Drama from the Golden Age of American Cinema
    Author: Anne Helen Petersen
    Narrator: Romy Nordlinger
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 9 hrs and 11 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-30-14
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 94 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
Believe it or not, America's fascination with celebrity culture was thriving well before the days of TMZ, Perez Hilton, Charlie Sheen's breakdown, and allegations against Woody Allen. And the stars of yesteryear? They weren't always the saints that we make them out to be. Part biography, part cultural history, the stories contained in this book cover the stuff that films are made of: love, sex, drugs, illegitimate children, illicit affairs, and botched cover-ups. Based on Anne Helen Petersen's popular column on the Hairpin, Scandals of Classic Hollywood is sensationalism made smart.

    No Smut? No Problem?
Where does Scandals of Classic Hollywood rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
Well, this is an odd question because no two books are alike. However, for this particular genre - Hollywood expose, this is an extraordinally well written book.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Scandals of Classic Hollywood?
One of the most memorable moments from the book was the Clark Gable/Carole Lombard narrative. It was surprisingly touching and, of course, very tragic.
What about Romy Nordlingers performance did you like?
It was a bit frantic at times but not unpleasant overall. The narration style seemed to fit the time period and subject matter covered.
Whats the most interesting tidbit youve picked up from this book?
Facts about how prevailing social norms in the country influenced what could make or break a Hollywood star and why. This was fascinating and made me contextualize it in today's celeb obsessed culture.
    Any additional comments?
This book greatly and pleasantly surprised me with its intellectual, provocative examination of stardom, fame and infamy when it comes to Hollywood and public consumption. I expected a gauzy, bawdy romp through the scandals of yesteryear and got something much better instead. There are scandals aplenty but they are offered up in a framework of the psychosocial, religious, political and historical context of the country in real time. The struggle of America to come to terms with sex, gender, race and many other defining issues informs the narratives found within the book at every turn. What a fascinating read as a result! My only complaint is the fact that the author clearly cherry picked her scandals and often chose to treat some incidents with kid gloves. Still, I highly recommend this book.
    Great Listen
I enjoy watching movies from the eras covered in this audiobook. The information was VERY interesting & shed light on Hollywood of yesterday.
    Riveting journey
A beautifully written book with wonderful narration by Romy Nordlinger who added so much with her sultry but emotional voice. I was very moved listening to it and can't wait to share it with various friends who know nothing about some of these tragic and brilliant heroes and heroines. I didn't want it to end!
    Don't waist your money.
This book was done with tabloid research. I have read better. It told me nothing I did not already know. How can I get my money and time back.
    Nothing new.

    Publisher's Summary:
Harry Gordon Selfridge (1858-1947) was an American born merchant who built Selfridges, a London department store, which opened in 1909. Using his 25 years of experience at Chicagos Marshall Field and Co., Selfridge initiated the use of American innovations and methods of business in his London store. These articles reflect how Selfridge was viewed by the press in the U.S. and London along with how he was seen by his fellow merchants and tradesmen during the years his store was built and thrived. There are also a number of sections in Selfridges own words. He loved publicity and was very interested in the ideas of his competitors, employees, and how business was done in other countries. This collection contains articles and excerpts from newspapers, books, magazines, and trade publications published from 1890-1922. Harry Gordon Selfridge and his store were the basis of the PBS Masterpiece Classic series, Mr. Selfridge".

    Selected Articles on Harry Selfridge
    Any additional comments?
This is a wonderful compendium of articles written about Harry Selfridge,a pioneer in the world of Department stores. The articles tell his story thru opinions of the day and the people who wrote them.Narrated by Lee Ann Howlett, the articles come to life as if they were written today.Very interesting!
I was given a copy for an honest review from Audio Book Blast dot com.
    A great intro to Selfridge
Would you consider the audio edition of Selected Articles on the Life and Career of Harry Gordon Selfridge to be better than the print version?
I can't really compare the print to audio, but it was nice to have the articles read aloud. I think it would have taken me a lot longer to get through the print articles if I were reading them
What did you like best about this story?
I really enjoyed hearing about creation of the London store and the lead up to the WWI
    Which scene was your favorite?
My favorite articles were the ones that quoted Selfridge's advice
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yeah I could have listened to it in one shot. I didn't, but I was curious about hearing the full story.
    Any additional comments?
Lee Ann's voice fit the genre & time period very well. At times the sibilance could be distracting, but overall her narration was a contribution to making the articles written in the early 20th centruty come to life.
I've had the Selfridge series from PBS sitting on my DVR forever, but after listening to this book I'm FINALLY going to sit down and watch it.
Events that shaped modern retailing & advertising
Disclosure: I received this audiobook from the editor/narrator in return for an honest review
This fascinating book follows H.G. Selfridge's ascent from a low-level Marshall Fields employee in Chicago, to managing partner, to owner of Selfridges Department Stores in the U.K. While the establishment of Selfridges Department Store was heralded by at least one U.K. newspaper as "The American Invasion," Selfridge sought to ensure that his store never misled customers in order to make a sale and helped lead the way for equal employment by hiring women when men were called to serve in World War I and then pronouncing that, in many cases, women performed the jobs even more effectively than their male predecessors.
I was originally interested in this book because I find Mr.

    Title: The King of California
Subtitle: J.G. Boswell and the Making of a Secret American Empire

    Narrator: James Patrick Cronin
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 19 hrs and 29 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 06-02-14
    Publisher: Audible Studios
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 63 votes
Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Business Leaders
    Publisher's Summary:
    J. G. Boswell was the biggest farmer in America. He built a secret empire while thumbing his nose at nature, politicians, labor unions, and every journalist who ever tried to lift the veil on the ultimate "factory in the fields". The King of California is the previously untold account of how a Georgia slave-owning family migrated to California in the early 1920s, drained one of America 's biggest lakes in an act of incredible hubris and carved out the richest cotton empire in the world. Indeed, the sophistication of Boswell 's agricultural operation - from lab to field to gin - is unrivaled anywhere.
Much more than a business story, this is a sweeping social history that details the saga of cotton growers who were chased from the South by the boll weevil and brought their black farmhands to California. It is a gripping read with cameos by a cast of famous characters, from Cecil B. DeMille to Cesar Chavez.

Good book about the southern San Joaquin
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This book is a must for residents of the southern San Joaquin Valley. It delves into the history of the Valley for the past 150 or so years, and covers the amazing transformation the Valley has seen, not always for the best.
Would you listen to another book narrated by James Patrick Cronin?
The narrator was very inconsistent with the pronunciations of last names and towns. He flips between the correct and incorrect pronunciation of several towns. For example "Delano" is correctly pronounced "De lane oh" but half the time he says "De lahn oh". Why it was not edited to have correct pronunciation all the way through is a mystery to me. His inflection was not always on the correct word in the sentence The narration was adequate but annoying.
    Any additional comments?
I think the authors portrayed the big farmers fairly and accurately.
Interesting story of California Ag history
Max Arax and Rick Wartzman tell the story of a family that combined hard work, farming wisdom and political maneuvering to build a farming empire in the San Joaquin Valley of California. This is a well-written and well researched story of the largest privately owned farming operation in the United States. In my opinion the authors appear to have a negative opinion regarding large industrial style of farming.
Jim Boswell moved to California from Georgia where the family had long been cotton growers. The boll weevil drove him out of Georgia to find land where cotton could grow. He worked as a cotton broker, until he saw the land of the southern San Joaquin Valley in California. He started buying land to farm, and then built Gins to process the cotton. He ruthlessly went after all the water rights he could obtain. As he grew into one of the largest farms his wife died. About 11 years after the death of his first wife Boswell married Ruth Chandler, Harry Chandlers daughter. The Chandler owned the Los Angeles times, large tracks of land in the San Fernando Valley, Tejon Ranch and other properties.
The authors tell how Boswell bought land and drained Tulare Lake and started growing crops and buying more land. The Primary crops included Pima Cotton ( used by LL Bean, Hanes Co. Etc.) alfalfa hay, tomatoes, onions, wheat, safflower, then later almonds, and other varieties of nuts.

    Publisher's Summary:
Born in 1906, Huguette Clark grew up in her family's 121-room Beaux Arts mansion in New York and was one of the leading celebrities of her day. Her father, William Andrews Clark, was a copper magnate, the second richest man in America, and not above bribing his way into the Senate.
Huguette attended the coronation of King George V. And at 22, with a personal fortune of $50 million to her name, she married a Princeton man and childhood friend, William MacDonald Gower. Two-years later the couple divorced. After a series of failed romances, Huguette began to withdraw from society - first living with her mother in a kind of Grey Gardens isolation, then as a modern-day Miss Havisham, spending her days in a vast apartment overlooking Central Park, eating crackers and watching The Flintstones with only servants for company.
All her money and all her real estate could not protect her in her later life from being manipulated by shady hangers-on and hospitals that were only too happy to admit (and bill) a healthy woman. But what happened to Huguette that turned a vivacious, young socialite into a recluse? And what was her life like inside that gilded, copper cage?
    Members Reviews:
    The Rich Are Different
This is the story of a wealthy heiress who shunned the spotlight and used her vast resources to maintain the illusions that kept her delicate psychology intact. The Clarks were the Kardashians of their day: famous for being famous, the minutiae of their lives scrutinized by the media. People are as interested to find out what happened to Huguette Clark as they would be if Kourtney or Kim Kardashian suddenly decided to hide from the public eye for decades.
I have three criticisms of the book: First, in an effort to connect far-flung events and explain why Huguette Clark became a recluse, the book suffers from too many time jumps that don't really add much to the story.
Second, the quotes from people who knew Huguette don't add much to the story, either. It's possible that, working from historical documents, the author didn't have much choice in regard to quotes. But even the people she interviewed in person come across as not having anything interesting to say.
Last, too much of the story focuses on the early life of Huguette's father, his first wife, and the children from that marriage. The book doesn't really find its stride until well over halfway through, when it begins to examine the forces in Huguette's young adult life that drove her to become a recluse.
In summary: this book had the opportunity to delve into Huguette's unusual psychology, and the psychology of recluses in general. There are hints throughout of psychological analyses, but no real focus on them. So, ultimately, the book left me disappointed.
    The OTHER Huguette Clark Book
I reviewed "Empty Mansions" as well, since I read both. This book achieved something that the other did not - it brought us into Huguette's world. She takes the reader into her early unfulfilled romances and shows the connection between the dolls, dollhouses, painting lessons, photography, frame-by-frame cartoons and how, put together, they became art.

    Title: The Kid
Subtitle: The Immortal Life of Ted Williams

    Publisher: Hachette Audio
Ratings: 4.5 of 5 out of 70 votes
    Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Celebrities
    Publisher's Summary:
At long last, the epic biography Ted Williams deserves - and that his fans have been waiting for.
Williams was the best hitter in baseball history. His batting average of .406 in 1941 has not been topped since, and no player who has hit more than 500 home runs has a higher career batting average. Those totals would have been even higher if Williams had not left baseball for nearly five years in the prime of his career to serve as a Marine pilot in WWII and Korea. He hit home runs farther than any player before him - and traveled a long way himself, as Ben Bradlee, Jr.'s grand biography reveals.
Born in 1918 in San Diego, Ted would spend most of his life disguising his Mexican heritage. During his 22 years with the Boston Red Sox, Williams electrified crowds across America - and shocked them, too: His notorious clashes with the press and fans threatened his reputation. Yet while he was a God in the batter's box, he was profoundly human once he stepped away from the plate. His ferocity came to define his troubled domestic life. While baseball might have been straightforward for Ted Williams, life was not.
The Kid is biography of the highest literary order, a thrilling and honest account of a legend in all his glory and human complexity. In his final at-bat, Williams hit a home run. Bradlee's marvelous book clears the fences, too.
PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your My Library section along with the audio.
    Critic Reviews:
"Bradlee's sumptuous biography details an extraordinary American life while showing us how that life morphed into legend. The Kid reads like an epic, starting before Williams's birth in 1918, outlining his Anglo and Mexican heritage growing up in Southern California, and continuing after his death in 2002 to the present. Bradlee has given us the fullest exploration yet of his monumental ego and the best explanation for his vast inferiority complex....The book is packed with great moments." (Boston Globe)
"What distinguishes Bradlee's The Kid from the rest of Williams lit is, its size and the depth of its reporting. Bradlee seemingly talked to everyone, not just baseball people but Williams's fishing buddies, old girlfriends, his two surviving wives and both of his daughters, and he had unparalleled access to Williams family archives. His account does not materially alter our picture of Williams the player, but fills it in with much greater detail and nuance....Bradlee's expansiveness enables his book to transcend the familiar limits of the sports bio and to become instead a hard-to-put-down account of a fascinating American life. It's a story about athletic greatness but also about the perils of fame and celebrity, the corrosiveness of money and the way the cycle of familial resentment and disappointment plays itself out generation after generation." (New York Times Book Review)
"Superb....Ted Williams hated what he considered invasions of his privacy, but perfectionist that he was, he would probably have to concede that the work ethic that underpins The Kid is exemplary. Mr. Bradlee, who was a reporter and editor at the Boston Globe for 25 years, spent 10 years researching and writing this book; he interviewed about 600 people and seems to have read everything about and by Williams.

A fascinating look at the publishing world
Sterling Lord is the greatest of literary agents. He represented scores of famous writers. He drove hard bargains but was always a gentleman and always respected by writers and publishers alike. His memoir is a candid, colorful and fascinating account of more than fifty years of American literary history. I highly recommend it to writers and readers alike. It is a wonderful account of a wonderful life. And, happily, Mr. Lord is still going strong at 92.
    An Extraordinary Life Fully Lived
After reading his memoir I became interested in some of his client's works that I haven't read and put them on my "bucket list" of ones to purchase. If this effects other readers in the same way, then he is still being a good agent in marketing their books. Entertaining and excellent reading.
    fascinating
loved reading about his life in publishing-- the deal making and also the authors he represented. From Kerouac to Kesey-- takes a special person to do this.
    Well writen and highly interesting!
This memoir is interesting and easy to read. Lord Sterling worked hard and crossed the path of amazing writers, agents and publishers.
Everything You've Wanted to Know about Publishing but were Afraid to Ask
Dignified, knowledgeable, loyal, patient, fierce when necessary, self-effacing, Sterling Lord is the perfect literary agent--and now it turns out he's a fine writer, too.
Of course I'm thrilled that Sterling mentions me and Diary of a Company Man in his book, right alongside other clients of his such as Jack Kerouac, Ken Kesey, and Tom Wolfe. But, my ego aside, I heartily recommend Lord of Publishing. Anyone interested in the book business - its history, evolution and current state - will find it a revelation.

The most fun you can have with your clothes on!
Would you listen to Him & Me again? Why?
I have already started to re-listen, as I missed some bits as I was laughing so much.
What about Jack Whitehall and Michael Whitehall s performance did you like?
I have no doubt that this would be a great book to read, but it is best enjoyed as an audiobook. The real enjoyment comes from the many asides, sighs, occasional spats but overall deep affection between the father and son.
    Any additional comments?
I very rarely 'review' books on any sites, but this one is kept me amused for several hours and I received several strange looks as I sat at the traffic lights laughing so hard I was almost crying.
The best book I have listened to this year.
What a unique and refreshing change !
At last, a book that is written and narrated with humour and intelligence. The interplay between Jack and his father is entertaining largely because they are equally matched. Such a refreshing idea to have a memoir told from the perspectives of two generations. I already knew of Jack's comedic abilities from his TV appearances but knew nothing about father, Michael Whitehall - who is a wonderful character with a very droll delivery and a wealth of ancedotes. I hope they will consider writing another book together - and might include chapters from Jack's mother and siblings and even some of the celebrities that Micheal has managed over the years. Nigel Havers.... what a additional treat that would be !
    sooooo brilliant
Where does Him & Me rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
jack and his dad read this book brilliantly and it sounds more like they are having a chat and not reading.
