Gripping and mind boggling

This book is presented in four parts: a history of the Murdoch empire and the man himself; a history and character study of his three children by his second wife (who are the ones most involved in or around his business); a history of the illegal activities (such as phone hacking and corruption) by parts of the Murdoch press; and a description of the fallout of the illegal activities for the corporation and the Murdochs themselves. This part also deals with who might run what when Rupert is no longer in charge.

While the whole book is good for me the best part by far was part III which described the illegal activities and the attempted cover up. Some of this was gripping and I had to force myself to stop listening just so I could get some sleep before work the next day! The callousness and arrogance was mind boggling at times. Parts I and II were also interesting especially reading about the capabilities and characters of his children.

I've been a fan of Paul Barry ever since reading The Rise and Rise of Kerry Packer and have also enjoyed his stints on Media Watch.This book another great addition to his work and is well worth your money.

This was an excellent short insight into the man and the hidden mechanics of the team. Well worth a listen.

Just a story

I was hoping for some profound knowledge sharing but for an hour long story which almost seemed like abstracts of a longer and better book.

A bit disappointing

A subject I am completely interested in, about a man I greatly admire... and it was I am sorry to say a pretty dreary listen... delivered with almost zero enthusiasm.

Brief and lite

Not really that interesting and actually quite forgettable. I would recommend Chris Bordmans book if you're after a fascinating look at the world of cycling and marginal gains!

The book is really more of a book about the interviewing of Ava Gardner, than it is a book about Ava Gardner herself. The author's approach is to recount in dialog the series of interviews he did with Ava, before she called the whole thing off (presumably under the direction and money of Frank.) The content is not as candid as it proclaims, but there is enough Hollywood dirt to have made it interesting. Also, you learn about early Hollywood and country girl Ava.

At the end of the book we find out that Ava worked with Peter Evans on her memoirs but backed out on the book when she learned that Frank Sinatra had sued Evans sometime before Ava hired Evans and Evans had not told her. After Evans death, people worked with his notes and put together this book. This rather explains why half the book is Evans 'complaining' about Ava calling him at 3 am and their arguing about including her cuss words. Evans has a whining tone and Ava appears careful. This book is probably unfair to them both. A bit later, Ava wrote her own book "Ava, My Story" and it is immensely better. Her own book has lots of color about Hollywood and its stars and moguls and delightful color about herself, written by her and including chapters by some of the people around her. Just to mention one big difference: in the Evans books, Evans has Ava declare she only slept with the Spanish matador once. In her own book, Ava relates a detailed love affair. Also, there is very little in the Evans book about Sinatra but a lot in Ava's book. By the way, she loved all her husbands.

Interesting, but one-note narration

Ava! Love her conversations and monologues!

Did William Hope do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

No. His worst offense, however, was making Ava sound like a falling-down drunk in EVERY line she spoke. Even if she had been drunk in all of her conversations with the author, it gets irritating and boring listening to a character who NEVER varies her pace and slurs every sentence. She sounds, in this version, like a man in drag. That gets old fast. It also is vaguely misogynistic.

Just Right!

I needed a break from the book I am currently reading so when I came across this one I thought it would fit the bill nicely: short, informative and entertaining. It was perfect for me; detailed enough to be interesting throughout, but not too heavy on politics, dates, treaties, and wars.

Im a Royalphile and Ive read many bios on the Royal Family, but so far none about Queen Mary and George V so I especially enjoyed the section that covered their reign. As for the rest of the group, although I cant say I learned anything new, I was engaged all the way through since I am naturally so drawn to the topic.

A fascinating story of an extraordinary person.

I found The Savage Way captivating. It took me across the globe to lesser known regions and countries in Africa and the Middle East from the early sixties onward, to the inner circle of board rooms in Corporate America, to the renowned scenes of international conferences of world leaders, to Italy, to India and beyond. It appears that in life, as in sailing, the author wisely uses his wind vane to maneuver, yet, closely follows his compass to guide him in the right direction, and never loses his inner voice, his calling and his identity. The book tells a story of a man who skillfully combines his own story, his family, with that of the business challenges he undertakes, openly discusses setbacks or failures, yet takes us with him to the heights of success. A fascinating story of an extraordinary person.

I have never seen one person so in love with themselves

This book was awful. I have never seen one person so in love with themselves. Could have been motivational if he had taken the focus off of making himself look good. It seems that that book was his chance for him to absolve himself of involvement in Enron.

Great book!

People from all walks of life would enjoy and learn from this consolidated view of Frank Savage's life experiences. His never give up attitude and positive view of the world are uplifting. The book left me feeling that there were many more interesting anectdotes to be shared and insights to gain from this extraordinary individual.

Review

This book is a candid picture of a life from a meager beginning to a life of prosperity and purpose. Savage Way gives young people hope that if you work hard, have integrity, follow your passion, and not let disappointments (failures) stop or deter you, you can achieve heights beyond your imagination.

Very Nice Book.

Outstanding read all around. Frank is definitely a role model and a very successful African American male and I enjoyed this book from the beginning to the end. Kudos to Frank and the success he's gained in business and sailing! My man.

Essential For Raider And Madden Fans

I'm not going to lie, this book is pretty flawed in many ways. It doesn't seem to be that well researched. In particular the coaching years don't seem to be covered that well, and I was pretty disappointed with the coverage. Also the narrative structure is deeply flawed. When talking about particular, notable football games in Madden's life, the writer first starts with the outcome (why?) and then describes the game (ugh). And the writing, in general, leaves a lot to be desired.

That said... there is still a lot of really great stuff in there, that Madden and Raider fans really can't afford to pass this up. There's a little bit about him and John Robinson growing up together, there's some stuff about Madden and his college years as a student and football player, and then of course his years as a coach, and finally as a broadcaster. The broadcaster years are actually pretty in-depth and insightful and probably the highlight of the book.

I'm still hoping that someone will come out with a better biography of John Madden, but until they do, this book is worthy of a listen. I'm very glad that I got it.

A must read for Raider fans

I couldn't stop listening, it put me right in the middle of Raider history from my youth.
