Bridal Trauma, Dysfunctional Families, and Screaming Hilarity--It Must Be A Provolone
I was merely giving this book a polite look through to determine where it should be stored until I could read it when it GRABBED MY EYEBALLS AND WOULD NOT LET GO! I was unable to detach them until I finished and laughed so much my family was gathered outside my room muttering about missed dinners, strange noises, and whether or not I would require hospitalization. I was held hostage by a book. I understand there is a prior book and I'm going to have to gather my courage, get my cooking done up ahead, and venture back into the insane waters of the Domino family--just as soon as I recover from this book.
It's odd that the initial premise of a bride who falls afoul of a mugger on the eve of her wedding and a repressed memory of being raped years earlier gets rattled loose in the concussion that follows should be so funny, but you have to understand about the Domino family. they're all crazy and hyperactive. The overly conscientious bridegroom who has just received a crash course in the complex dynamics of his new family and has been made aware he is now responsible for the care and protection of this most unstable member of an already notably crazy and complex group of people is caught in a moral dilemma. How can he expect his battered bride who just recovered horrific memories to engage in conjugal relations? What kind of a brute would he be to inflect this on her on top of everything else that's recently happened? The fact that she's been an enthusiastic participant since well before the marriage seems to escape him entirely.
The bride, now wife, has always viewed herself as a competent adult and has never seemed to grasp the fact that, according to her family and husband, she is a damaged traumatized mite who requires special handling. She is left baffled and feeling deserted by the sexual paralysis that now rules her marriage as her husband wrestles his conscience and urges trying to determine what further damage he'll inflict if he gives in to his baser self. The heroine is left with the impression that the former sexual madman she loved has been kidnapped and replaced with a slightly animated stuffed shirt. She reacts to this less than satisfactory situation as her culture demands--with cleaning, obsessive cooking, and nursing a grudge.
The hero, who also misses his carefree sexual madman days with his now wife reacts to his situation as he tries to feel his way through to the other side of his personal sexual swamp in the way HIS culture demands--with avoidance, therapy, and passive aggressive behavior.
