Great story, I'll be looking for the sequels
Story line was very thought provoking, character development was good, especially Drew. End of the book was more like the end of a chapter, not horrible but not really an ending.... left me wanting more(which is good) but there was nothing conclusive to end the book on. I'll definitely be reading the next edition.

    Publisher's Summary:
"Last Enemy" is a science fiction story written by H. Beam Piper, and is a part of his "Paratime" series. The title is a reference to 1 Corinthians 15:26, "The last enemy that shall be destroyed is death." (KJV) It made its first appearance in August 1950, in Astounding Science Fiction magazine (now Analog). The story begins at a dinner party given by Garnon of Roxor. The party is a voluntary discarnation feast, or suicide party.
Garnon has been planning his discarnation for years, but has decided to proceed now, to assist in the scientific experiment of Dallona of Hadron. Immediately after Garnon's death, a nearby sensitive, already placed in a hypnotic trance, begins to channel Garnon's spirit, giving proof positive that disincarnate individuals are fully conscious, telepathically sensitive, capable of telepathic communication, and capable of exercising choice in the vehicle for their reincarnation... This is only the beginning and the premise of a dizzyingly complex tale!

Not what I expected, but enjoyable, just the same
This war book was both more and less than what I expected. I anticipated reading a memoir of combat experiences flying Spitfires in the Battle of Britain. It is that, in part, but that was not the writer's chief aim. Rather, he seems to have set out to explain how an admitted non-political, self-absorbed college student found commitment and compassion for his fellow man through experiences that included downing 5 enemy planes in the Battle of Britain and extended hospitalization. It was also more that I expected, in that the flying scenes he does describe, are among the best I have ever read. On the whole, The Last Enemy fleshes out the times and the people, particularly those on track to become leaders, but instead found themselves on the front lines of a war they did not want. I suggest that before reading, you look up the author online. The references to his life will put this book in a clearer perspective.
    two parts to this story
The first part of this novel deals with well known college and university students and graduates who signed on to the military during the beginning of England's entry into the conflict. Most tried aviation and upper class educated men were given preference as RAF pilots.
Class envy and class distinction was an everyday part of life in THE UK, whether at war or not.
The second part to this novel is really the most interesting for two reasons: the almost indifferent attitude toward loss of fellow pilots and secondly, the pain, suffering and permanent disfigurstion of so many who served their country but also how so many couldn't adjust to the boredom of peace! On day, they're lives are on the line, the next, it's over and one has to return to life without excitement or no life at all.
    Dissapointed
This is more than not a philosophical set of discussions the authors posits with other characters in the book. Some of the book is about flying, but all his arguments / philosophizing about the nature of war, man, life etc felt obvious and somewhat repetitive. He writes pretty well, and the descriptions of what he went through with his injuries is horrifying, but as a story about England and the Battle of Britain it left me uninterested.

    Release date: 04-13-17
    Publisher: Audioliterature

    Genres: Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Sci-Fi: Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
"The Time Machine" is a science fiction novel by H. G. Wells, published in 1895.
Wells is generally credited with the popularization of the concept of time travel by using a vehicle that allows an operator to travel purposely and selectively forwards or backwards in time. The term "time machine", coined by Wells, is now almost universally used to refer to such a vehicle.
The novel has since been adapted into three feature films of the same name, as well as two television versions, and a large number of comic book adaptations. It has also indirectly inspired many more works of fiction in many media.
The plot of the novel is extremely labyrinthine (too much so for a description here) and a pure joy to travel through; so just fasten your time travel belts and let's go!

    Accessible and entertaining classic
The Invisible Man is one of those classics that has been on my TBR for ages, always getting posponed to read other titles instead. But after a mention that this classic was actually quite entertaining, I decided to finally pick it up. And they were right, because I actually found myself having a lot of fun while readingÂThe Invisible Man. Not only is the prose quite easy to read, but the plot itself is both intriguing and entertaining as things start escalating. The character development has been really well done and shows the effects being invisible can have on a man... If you are looking for an accessible and entertaining classic to read,ÂThe Invisible Man is the choice for you.
    Insightful
Read this book for an English class and I thought it was very insightful. It gave very convincing theories on human nature and what possibly could lay ahead of us in the future. to me this book gave the illusion of mystery by not giving some people names. This mystery exemplified the imagery the time travler gave about the future. the ending heightened the mystery seven fold. I was left wanting more, wanting to know more, and wanting to go back to the future with the time traveler. Made me really think about how the time travelers theories are thought out and could potentially actually happen. Definitely a thought invoking read
    A Great Old War!!
This is a good old fashioned yarn. I read the book through in one or two sittings. HG created a sense of menace and despair through the book, which I loved. His descriptions were evocative of the times, and I could almost visualize the destruction taking place, as the book weaved along.
The writing is, for our times, old fashioned, yet timeless. The almost forgotten craft of writing is something that was displayed through the book. I lost the part where the Martians were 'destroyed'. It would have been really nice to have had a nice description of this, but you can't have everything in life!
If you want a good book to read by the fireside, then this is one I can recommend.
Classic Still Has the Attraction and Impact of A Fresh Story!
The Time Machine, like all of H.G. Well's works, are classics. However, they still are enjoyable even after the umpteenth reading! I like the old (not the newer) version of the movie as well. This is a Victrorian story, keep it Victorian! Trying to update it in the newer movie was doomed to failure. The raw adventure into unknown territory for its time was just short of fantastic. H.G.

"Operation: Outer Space" is a science fiction novel by Murray Leinster. It was first published in 1954. The novel introduces the first interstellar flight, financed by making it into a television show! In fact, this very funny work is much more of a biting satire on the world of television, the media and the rich than a regular space opera but with some elements of sci-fi still there of course...

A Fun romp through 60's style outerspace.
I could almost see James Coburn (In Like Flint; The President's Analyst) as Cochrane. This story is on the borderline of tongue and cheek, but it is a fun romp in a classic style - land on it's own three fins - style of vehicle. These fellows go to the moon, the only out of world place man has colonized at the beggining of this story, to help an insecure adult child of a rich client get the recognition he desires from the world. This is accomplished with this young man's faking the invention of the "Dabney" field, a secret of the galaxy that helps propel these characters hundreds of light years away for the adventure of a lifetime! Now, don't expect any serious introspection here, and it's not quite "Hitchhiker's Guide" either, but it's a good way to get through a few hours. Also, the price is right!
    Four Stars
    Good read.
    Two Stars
    Did not like
    Three Stars
    Not what I was expecting
Fun Science Fiction that is really SCIENCE, in its own way.
Murray Leistner was no Proust, but he wrote in a clear easy style that carried a lot of stories to good reads. This is not his best work, but is is a good example of "inventor saves humanity." I think he really was influenced by Heinlein and needed some thing to write. But It is the right length and has the right mood for a fun time. In my opinion "The Pirates of Zan" is a better story.

A fun novel that turns a golden-age convention on its ear!
During the thirties, forties and into the fifties, it was fairly common to find science fiction stories about men who were transported to other worlds or into the future. Burroughs did it with John Carter. Even Asimov did it in the first of his classic "Galactic Empire" novels. Here, Edmond Hamilton turns that convention upside down by transporting an entire American city into the far future. The purpose, of course, is to see how society reacts to the change.
As an interesting aside, it must be noted that Edmond Hamilton was also a regular writer for DC Comics in the fifties and well into the mid-sixties. He was a primary Superman author during the formative years of the Silver Age of Comics, and he famously borrowed from his own novel to celebrate the 300th issue of Action Comics in grand style. He transports Superman to a future similar to this one, where the now-red Sun strips him of his superpowers. It stands as one of the most memorable stories of that era, and the cover, with a bearded, powerless Superman standing with the red sun in the background, is quite famous in comics circles.
    An imaginative apocalyptic story
Science fiction of days past is science fact of today still has a core truth to it in this story. An imaginative apocalyptic story that is rather short for a novel, holds forth the indomitable spirit of man that has been a part of humanity since the dawn of time. Well written smooth flowing prose that is descriptive enough to let your imagination form the pictures of the times and circumstance without being overbearing. A town in middle America has to overcome adversity after becoming the last remaining bastion of humanity on a planet devoid of all life from an attack with a super atomic bomb. Citizens of the town have to deal with the reality of the devastation and a side effect of the attack, a shift in time. Well worth reading.
    Good old fashioned Sci FI
Written as a futuristic novel decades ago, this book holds up amazingly well. The people of a small midwestern town must try to understand what has happened when they are apparently covered by a dome that protects them from devastation when the bombs fall. They are not scientists so they must deal with the event without understanding what has happened. Even when Mysterious strangers arrive to save the day (??) they rely on their own innate sense of what is right and how to cope.
A bonus here is the fact that this was written in a time when writers took pride in their work and actually proofread it for errors. Good writing makes it a pleasant read.
    Old but fun read
A funny science fiction book written either shortly before or after WWII.

    Stellar Narration And Storyline
Smooth listening and thought provoking story. Really enjoyed the narration. He brought the book to life and made listening a breeze. I never had to back up to repeat what was said. Great for all ages, very clean language and content. Lots of twists in the story to keep the tracks going! Highly recommend to those looking for a fun, illustrative and quick book with a sequel on the horizon!
    Fun story, Excellent Narration

The Narrator of this story is superb, he snatches your attention and keeps you engaged. His voice helps bring every character to life. Above all his standard voice is a soothing one of a kind bass that will have you asking for more!

    Very Good
A very good book , by a very good author
    Review of Service Goat
Admittedly the review score on this one put me off. The idea that an iconic writer whose works have plagued my mind for twenty years might deserve such a marking had me scared. Still, after reading this fiction I can say there a few bluntly discussed dynamics that may be rubbing people the wrong way. In addition, maybe readers expected more. I did.
There are four major players: investigator guy, his gal, a blind girlâand the alien goat. I liked the goat. The goat cheated a lot in this book to make things smooth. For some reasons these scenesâwhere the goat calmly alters people's minds and they're just like âoh, your goat is neatâ âmade me laugh. Some of the passages from space goat's point of view are also funny. Hereâs a passage...
âThat was evidently a shock to the goats; sheep were a lesser species, an insulting likeness. It seemed that it had not occurred to them that sapience could arise in a creature other than a goat.â
Now that being said, some readers may not like the casual interactions between hulk like investigator guy (Ben) and his gal (Venus)âthe majority of their scenes are âfind information X, have sex, find information Y, have more sex, repeat.â Don't be confusedâthere's no actual graphic scenes, it's closer to a fade to black while someone holds up a sign saying âThey're doing it again, please wait.â I wasn't bothered.
In additionâand this may be a failing on my partâbut the conversations felt almost too clinical. The people are insanely candid when talking. That strikes me as weirdâ because most people I talk to are confused half the time. Maybe thatâs me projecting. Potential readers may feel the same wayâand the best answer is to use the âLook Insideâ preview on Amazon then judge for yourself.
Those looking to find earlier Xanth or Incarnations of Immortality style stories should dismiss the idea out of hand. This work stands closer his Mode series. Itâs not a novella that will appeal to everyone. Measuring this against nostalgia for Piers Anthonyâs earlier works (On a Pale Horse is the reason I read at all) is a mistake.

Worth a read, but just once
Simak repeatedly explored the possibilities inherent in the interaction of humans with intelligent aliens who were at first considered animals or too human to understand. He was a master of making the aliens, well . . . alien, yet able to communicate and give their viewpoints. This is a short, mostly forgettable story, but in typical Simak style, it's concise, the characters are sketched with remarkable efficiency, inner dialog is often unexpected, and there is a bit of a twist at the end. Simak will often clearly set a scene in amazingly few words and then dwell on internal motivation.
This is worth a read, but probably just once. Don't judge Simak by this story. He was considered a Grand Master of science fiction for good reason. Try "Way Station", "Why Call Them Back From Heaven", "City", "Time and Again", "The Goblin Reservation", "A Choice of Gods", "Project Pope", "Time is the Simplest Thing", or any of his more than forty novels or collections.
    Short, sweet SF
A great, original SF story. Short, with action to keep you engaged. But also intellectually stimulating. I could easily see this becoming a movie. My only criticism is in the formatting of this e-book, as the first letter of the first word after a section break is always missing. But I could always figure out what was intended.
    Unique
Logical SF mystery, good storyline, moral and twist at the end. Logical SF mystery, good storyline, 4 more words added
    Five Stars
    I really like it.
    Beware the Cytha!!!
Good example of Simak's story telling. Ends well, but not all that predictable. Not a brainless "happily ever after" ending. A good example of Simak when he was hitting his stride. Worth reading.

It is April 1962. The Korean War has escalated and the US is struggling to keep the Russians and Chinese north of the 38th parallel. All the men are away fighting, but that doesn't mean the Space Race is lost. NASA decides to look elsewhere for its astronauts: the 13 women pilots who passed the same tests as the original male candidates. These are the Mercury 13: Jerrie Cobb, Janey Hart, Myrtle Cagle, Jerri Sloan, Jan Dietrich, Marion Dietrich, Bernice Steadman, Wally Funk, Sarah Gorelick, Gene Nora Stumbough, Jean Hixson, Rhea Hurrle, and Irene Leverton. One of these women will be the first American in space. Another will be the first American to spacewalk. Perhaps one will even be the first human being to walk on the Moon.
Beneath the surface of the Atlantic Ocean, deep in the Puerto Rico Trench north of San Juan, lies a film bucket from a KH-4 Corona spy satellite. It should have been caught in mid-air by a C-130 from the 6549th Test Group. That didn't happen. So the US Navy bathyscaphe Trieste II must descend 20,000 feet to retrieve the bucket, down where light has never reached and the pressure is four tons per square inch. But there is more in the depths than anyone had expected, much more.
This is not our world. But it very nearly was.

Excellent addition to the "Apollo Quartet" series
This is the best of the Apollo Quartet tales so far. Again, it is set in an alternate version of the 1960s in which the Russians are beating the Americans in the space race at every turn. Worse, the Korean War has America bogged down worse than Vietnam and is actually a covert battle with Russia and China as well as the North Koreans (kinda like the real thing...). With all the top male pilots recalled to active duty, NASA, reluctantly, picks 13 women pilots to carry out the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo space flights. Despite the sexism of the times, they have the "right stuff" to get the job done. Years later, with the Korean War winding down, an all out effort to recover a spy satellite's film canister requires a spooky mission to the deepest part of the Atlantic Ocean and may be the setup for events depicted in "Adrift on the Sea of Rains", the first of the Apollo Quartet stories. Oh, one more thing: the all female "Mercury 13" astronauts really existed. Sales includes a heartbreaking history of what happened to them.
Having grown up during the space race, I love Sales' attention to detail and all the NASA jargon. He has done his homework. His writing is spare and effortless.
