Publisher's Summary:
Archangel is the second installment of the explosive, pulse-pounding Spectre War science-fiction series.
An enemy you can't kill. A soldier who can't fight. An interstellar war that can't be won - until now.
As a soldier of the Celestial Expanse, Guardian First Class Michael Sorenson knows better than anyone that when the Spectres invade, there are only two options - run or die.
However, his defensive war takes on a whole new spin when he's recruited into Division 7, a research and development facility with the ultimate mission: to create a large-scale weapon that can kill Spectres en masse.
Here Michael joins a team of military elite who have the daring - and dangerous - task of taking new weapons prototypes out into the field for testing on enemy troops. Yet the closer they come to developing a working WMD, the more it becomes clear: there's a saboteur in R&D.
With all signs pointing to a massive Spectre attack brewing on the horizon, the creation of a new weapons system yields an opportunity to end the threat once and for all. As the days count down toward its launch, Michael must hunt down the saboteur...before the saboteur kills again.
Members Reviews:
Great second installment in Specter series
This was so different from book 1(Nova). Nicely done. Just enough character carry over from first book to keep you connected, but not so much to be Nova 2. Good balance between a squad sci fi (eg, starship troopers) and intergalactic big picture intrigue (eg, lost starship) book. Can't wait for book 3!
Bleak Military Sci Fi and Story about Grief
This book starts with the central love interest in the first book having been completely broken by the events of the prior book. Despite the fact that in the prior book he hated the military and was very close to his sister, this book starts with him in the military, not talking to his sister, and in an army unit with a high casualty rate. This actually makes sense based on the events of the prior book, but is tragic. What follows is military sci fi of the "Full Metal Jacket"/"Band of Brothers" vein that has an enormously high death count, a kind of book I've never cared for. Much of the book focuses on the protagonist dealing with loss. There is also a great deal of action which I found myself tempted to flip through. This book piles on the tragedies to the point it's hard to believe anyone will live long enough for me to get emotionally invested. If you like tear jerkers, tragedies, and military sci fi, you'll like this book. Don't quite understand reviewers who describe it as a "fun read". I had trouble sleeping after reading it.
The sequel to a compelling mystery is boring military SF
This book is dramatically different from and inferior to the Nova novel. Archangel is overly long, repetitive and filled with long passages of military action that become simply boring. There is a sub-plot about sabotage that seems to drag endlessly with the main character repeating himself ad nauseam. I have rarely seen such a decline in quality between two books. It is almost like a different author wrote number two. Save time and move on to other reading.
Intense, dramatic ending
Unlike some people who rate a book without reading it, I read the book in its entirety. The book was a very enjoyable read. It kept me intrigued throughout the book.
