    Title: It's Only a Movie
    Author: Mark Kermode
    Narrator: Mark Kermode
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 7 hrs and 52 mins
    Language: English

Genres: Bios & Memoirs, Personal Memoirs
    Publisher's Summary:
To avoid fainting, keep repeating it's only a move ..only a movie ..only a movie ..only a movie
If you grew up believing that Planet of the Apes told you all you needed to know about politics, that Slade in Flame was a savage exposé of the pop world, and that The Exorcist revealed the meaning of life, then you probably spent far too many of your formative years at the cinema. Just as likely, you soon would have realised that there was only one career open to you - you'd have to become a film critic.
In Its only a Movie, the incomparable Mark Kermode takes us into the weird world of a life lived in widescreen. Join him as he embarks on a gut-wrenching journey through the former Soviet Union on the trail of the low budget horror flick Dark Waters, cringe as he's handbagged by Helen Mirren at the Bafta awards ceremony, cheer as he gets thrown out of the Cannes film festival for heckling in very bad French, and don't forget to gasp as he's shot at while interviewing Werner Herzog in the Hollywood hills.
Written with sardonic wit and wry good humour, this compelling cinematic memoir is genuinely inspired by real events.

Very funny stories about the love of movies
I noticed this because of the cover, but the audio sample hooked me. I loved this book. Mark Kermode, who also does a BBC show that you can find in podcast about movies, writes and narrates this. I had no idea who he was before this, but after listening, I'm a big admirer.
He talks a lot about a variety of movies: The Exorcist, Mama Mia, Blue Velvet, The Queen, Breaking the Waves, Silent Running, Hellraiser, Local Hero, Texas Chainsaw Massacre II, The Evil Dead, and others with funny observations and personal notes.
The funniest parts are his first time on the radio, his ill-fated trip to newly capitalized Russia and his trip to the US to interview his favorite celebrities.
If you appreciate movies, especially cult or horror movies, you'll like this book.
Because of this book, I now subscribe to the Kermode and Mayo podcast, which updates every Friday with interviews and usually funny movie reviews.
    I just love Mark.
What did you like best about this story?
The best part of the book is definitely the story of Werner Herzog getting shot, which a brief google search will give you footage of.
    Pure Witter-tainment - only deeper, & richer
If one can get past the laughs (not easy, because there are so many), this not only an amusing autobiographical piece of storytelling, but a deep love story: a love story about a man an his muse - movies.
Kermode reads his own writing the same way he speaks on the BBC: with wit, self-deprecating humor, but also with his passion for all things cinema.
I will have to listen to it more than once, because, frankly, I was often laughing too hard to get all the details of this audio "movie" "inspired by true events", directed, produced, written, scored and read by the Professor.
Highest recommendation - and check out his podcasts, both with & w/o Simon Mayo. Yes, you'll be addicted, but it's worth the monkey(s) on your back & every minute of your time, and every megabyte of storage & bandwidth.
    As slick as his hair
Within the first 15 minutes of this title I knew I was going to love it and want to listen to it many times.

    Not Helpful
This is one of the most upsetting books I have listened to on Audible. This book is mainly about the author and her personal problems. She appears to have mental health issues that she attributes to her son being gay. Despite encouraging people to love their gay children the message that gays are damaged and sinful is very strong. Blaming her son for her depression and fear of others finding out she is not perfect may not be helpful in helping parents deal with a gay child. Working to "keep satan from her son" does not feel like she is accepting her child. This book also blames sexual abuse for her son's homosexuality. While sexual abuse may be a part of some people living a homosexual life, it is presented as a defense for her son's sexual identity. It feels as if the author has issues in her role as a pastor's wife. Perhaps truth and honesty all along would be more encouraging than describing her situation as if she were a martyr due to her son's homosexuallity. I understand the Christian struggle surrounding homosexuality. However,a loving God has created all of us and He does not make mistakes. Knowing that God loves us and our children needs to be remembered when there is material like this book. The author describes that she sins, however, she sees her son's sins as "worse." If you believe homosexualilty is a sin, you know the Bible well enough to recognize it is not Man's job to create a hierarchy of sin. I hope those considering reading this book will see it as only one person's opinion. I wish that the book had included information from the author's son. I worry that he has taken on some of his mother's issues and struggles to accept himself. I hope Benjamin has gotten the support and help he needs to avoid perpetuating the abuse he suffered and the impact of the damaging attitudes from his mother. I find it very confusing she is making money from her "broken" homosexual son.

    She revealed little!!!!
He turned their relationship into a best seller.
I thought the story would be more revealing of their relationship. Not so much. I have collected all of Robert Waller and will keep this as part of the collection but his fiction is far better than her revelations.
    Interesting but not essential!!!!!
    Well Written - Pitiful Story
Too bad there is no option for zero stars. The author is a woman who has mistaken a commonplace married man/single girl affair to be "true love". The book jacket says Ms. St. James is an award-winning journalist. The writing is good -- but Ms. St. James' emotional integrity is completely lacking. During the affair, Waller made his position clear. He did not take care of her, take her out, or give tangible tokens of affection. He did not go to her -- he repeatedly "arranged" for her to go to him!! Men who are truly in love do not behave this way!! This is the behavior of a man who is married and intends to stay with his wife. I believe Waller was pretty clear concerning his intentions. Ms. St. James gave her all, and seems pathetic to interpret such a situation as "true love". I felt sorry for her as I tried to read through this book. No self-respecting woman would thus compromise herself. Nor would any self-respecting woman mistake a common sexual liaison for an "epic love". She must have been extremely emotionally deprived -- even before she met Waller. The fact that no better situation came her way during the next 25 years caused me to wonder about her also.
    Definately worth the read!
I picked up this little book and couldn't stop reading it because I have felt many similar feelings in love. (I am a heterosexual male, FYI). At first I thought her love for him was purely puppy dog - a physical / energetic infatuation. But as I read on I saw how she began to think of the greater good for her lover and made choices for this greater good, even at the sacrifice of her own joy. This kind of "love for the well-being of another" is certainly the core of ANY kind of true love, be it romantic, friendship, religious or otherwise.
As I continued reading however, I felt that he manipulated the hell out of her and had no business getting in her personal space to begin with. He knew exactly what he was doing and, as a male who has had relationships with younger, I understand this side as well. It takes an EXTRAORDINARY amount of strength and purity to keep things clean and on the level; something Robert Waller obviously didn't have and didn't care to exercise from moment one.
Regardless of how you feel about this book, I think it is an important read because it is a looking glass - one person's seemingly honest attempt to explain her feelings of love. And, if you are open-minded, it is also illuminating to see how these feelings of love can both be pure...

In 1945, at the end of the war, her letters were returned, their messages of comfort and love unread, bearing the War Office stamp "No Trace". Wynne's letters, discovered by her niece, Jenny Davis, in 1988, offer a valuable glimpse into the hearts and minds of the women waiting at home. Beautifully narrated by Rebecca Davis & Stuart Halusz, the stars of the stage version of the book.

    Editorial Reviews:
Based on the love letters written by Jenny Davis' aunt Wynne to her young soldier husband over a four-year period during World War II, Dear Heart gives listeners a poignant and vital glimpse into the lives of women who were left behind while their men went off to fight. Narrator Stuart Halusz uses a thoughtful, sensitive tone as he describes the background and conditions that ordinary people faced during the war, whether at home or on the battlefield. His narration is complemented by Rebecca Davis' affecting, full-bodied performance: Her Wynne is alive and hopeful despite only receiving two replies, and although this story ends on a tragic note, listeners will find themselves unable to forget its emotional power.

    Members Reviews:
Very underrated book, and one of the best books on both politics and psychology
Most books in the "political" category are designed to make you angry at the other side, and succeed at that. Others are designed to give you a deeper understanding of the facts, and leave you feeling smarter but without a sense of how it connects to you.
"Cracking the Code" is the rare book that reaffirmed my own political standings while simultaneously having *less* contempt for the other side. It works simultaneously as a lesson in political science and a self-help book, even though it's much more of a lesson in political science. Hartmann breaks down the basic motivations behind both left-wing and right-wing politics, and, in doing that, he shows very clearly how things are, in many ways, more complicated than they appear, and, in others, more simple than they appear.
The book should be required reading for anyone interested in American politics - especially people on the "left," but people on the right, too. It will give you a better understanding of how politics works and a lot less anger and frustration.
Feelings and Emotions over the Rational
After reading the reviews replete with encomiums for this book, I had to show the other side. Hartmann speaks about identifying modes people experience the world in: seeing, hearing, feeling; then their brains: lizard, dog or cat, and human (survival, emotional, rational). Anchor words to feelings (dog and cat brains) then to rational brain (human). Throughout the book he appeals to the dog cat brains (feelings and emotions) which he later says one must get them to focus, by creating a trance. This book is dangerously close to conversational hypnosis, and I hope the only people that have read it, are those who have reviewed it!
    A true genious
I have a college degree in graphic design, communicating visually, so this book, communicating verbally was a great compliment to that for me.
Thom has figured it out! This book tells us the tricks talkers on both the left and the right use to create effective communication, so we can learn how to communicate better. This is a book anyone who wants to communicate better should read, who already know where they stand on the issues (this is a political book), but has trouble communicating them effectively to people. It goes into subtle language. Language with positive or negative associations. How the brain decodes language. Famous speeches and how they used the communication code to change the path of America. This book is a quick read, easy to understand, and very powerful. Its worth reading more than once. It could almost be used as a reference guide if you blog/forum political messages.. or even in your workplace in a non-political setting. A great book, for someone just beginning to enter the political landscape, or for a seasoned veteran, like a congressperson who wants to navigate the conversation and cultural story we are enacting with more skill.
    Always good Hartman!
    Inspires me to do more.
